  1.

Two decades since Kelly retired dude. Two decades...

    I also feel this frustration.....

But Doug Whaley was not the GM for those 2 decades.....that is where people seem to loose sight of. You cannot blame on GM for another's failures. For that matter....this team doesnt even have the same ownership anymore.

I know it feels like one big beating......but it really isnt. The team is on the upswing. We might have the best D in the league. We had a winning record last year.

Just gotta put it all together.

  2. Scouting prospective college QB's is not an exact science, and many, many teams with highly paid scouts / evaluators fail all the time. However, there are some brilliant offensive football minds in the NFL, and those men can actually see the difference between the players who will become starting QB's in the NFL and those who won't. This franchise has been beset by ineptitude for years, and years by bad player evaluation, and in some areas they still appear to be.

I believe Bill Polian is one of those men who can see that QB talent, and right now Doug Whaley & co is looking like not. Like I posted earlier, that someone in the Bills FO stated that EJ had the stature of a big man, and yet doesn't throw like one. Where was that critique when they were evaluating him?

Where was Mr. Polian picking when he drafted all of his QBs?

  3. Sal Capaccio@SalSports 32s

Stefan Charles started on defense in place of Kyle Williams who was on.....offense. Tight end.

Too bad we don't have Cutler to throw to him :D

I really feel that Stephan Charles is the air apparent to Kyle after this season

The offense is improving with more practice? That's weird. I want to cut some people now!!!

What is the HE double toothpicks is wrong with our defense! Why are they not dominating every snap!

    Heads must roll

  4. I'd be real curious how aggressive the Bills were in trying to land Foles, Bradford and/or Cutler, while all are flawed, all are significant improvements over what we have.

I also think the NFL has made the QB too important. I know, sounds like sour grapes from a fan of a franchise without a franchise QB, but, if you think about it, no other team sport is in this position. Sure, in hockey, the goalie can be that important in a single game, but, let's face it, you can find a goalie you can with rather easily.

The fact that only 15-20 people at any given time can play the position effectively, yet, you can't win without one is troublesome.

I think Pegula will give he current plan a go for a year or two (maybe 3) before he realizes he needs to blow this up and get into the Top 3 to have shot at franchise guy.

    Lets look at them

Foles - At times this guy looks worse then any QB we have........what would we have to give up for him?

Bradford - injury prone....injury prone....injury prone.....what would we have to give up for him

Cutler - how much of the cap is this guy going to eat?

Also lets keep in mind that it takes 2 to tango.....the other teams might just have decided not to deal with us on those QBs. We just dont know what goes on behind the scenes.

What we DO know however is that Doug Whaley is not afraid or timid of making deals.....and he has shown that.

NFN, I have never, ever advocated firing Doug Whaley. As I have stated in the past I think the entire Bills org, IE Whaley knows his stuff on the defensive side of the ball, and is somewhat wanting for the offensive side.

My thinking is the Bills really, really needed that football czar to help a young GM reach his full potential. Polian might have been the perfect answer in not staying around for long and yet the young GM could pick his brain as to what exactly he looks for in a college QB.

Fear....I realizing you were mostly hyperboling with that quote but just step back and think about it for a minute

You are saying that pro football people...not armchair qbs but pro football talent evaluators......dont know what a good qb looks like. Just stop and think about that for a minute...:)

  5. But, But, who should they have gone after the last two years? Oh wait! I mean since EJ was benched, and the FO knew after three games last season that he wasn't the answer then why not try for a top FA QB or draft one this off season?

Well, they could have tried a trade for one but they didn't have a 2015 1st round pick because they needed to draft that once in a generation WR last year. So trading up for one of the top two was out of the question, and I presume the FO had no faith in Garrett Grayson taken by the Saints in the 3rd, or Sean Mannion taken by the Rams in the 3rd. Then there was Bryce Petty in the 4th or Brett Hundley in the 5th. The Bills didn't have a Nick Foles to trade the Rams for Sam Bradford so I guess they were indeed stuck in QB purgatory.

Never mind that there were other possible free agent QB's like Brian Hoyer, Josh McCown, Ryan Mallett, Christian Ponder. All of these guys must be worse then Matt Cassel, right?

The bigger picture seems to be that GM Doug Whaley was "all in" on EJ when he drafted him, and again "all in" on him during the 2014 draft when he used two first rounder picks a fourth on a WR. Shoot, because if he had known EJ wasn't the man then he could have beaten the Raiders to Derek Carr or the Patriots to Jimmy Garoppolo, right?

Bottom line here I have serious doubts that anyone currently employed by the Buffalo Bills would know the difference between a good college QB prospect and a bad one. Simple as that!

Mentioning Raiders rookie QB Derek Carr I seem to recall that rookie QB playing in all 16 games last year, and he played on one of the very worst teams in the game. Yet that rookie looked darn good at the end of the season by beating the #4 defense in the league!! Then making that defense look quite ordinary even tho that team had the best pass rush in the entire league! Carr went 17 of 34 for 2 TD's and NO Int's. Imagine that! Isn't that what a promising rookie should look like by the end of his first season by beating a team with a top defense on the verge of the playoffs?

I highly doubt this thread would even exist if EJ had played that well at the end of the season against a team with a defense as good as the Buffalo Bills were last year.

PS. I still have faith that EJ can still develop into a starting NFL QB if coached properly this season, and circumstances allow his further development...even if nobody in the Bills FO does. The Bills FO basing their current opinions given them by the previous coaching staff of clowns?

Jesus Christ....some of the people on this board.

  6.

I think it's more likely that--assuming Glenn proves that last year was a lingering effect of his offseason issue--Bradham gets let go. I think there's virtually no chance that Gilmore goes, and Dareus should be signed by the time TC closes.

I think we're looking at the final season of guys like Wood, Kyle, and McKelvin in Bills' uniforms, so that'll be the tradeoff.

Plus, I think Roman is going to want all 3 OTs on this roster so that he can play one of them in 6-man blocking sets like he did in SF.

I am big fans of Wood, Kyle, and McKelvin.....but I would def live with this trade off. I think that we have some young DT's on the roster that are ready to move into the starting lineup with Marcel.......When there is no drop off in play from Wood and Urbik that says something there......and McKelvin's replacement has already been drafted.......

The other thing....Incognito.....already solidified himself at LG......extended him now while his value is low would be smart

  7. I know that this is a open forum.....but frankly I am tired of people complaining about the QB situation when you cant even offer up a viable solution to fix it.....

it is a LEAGUE WIDE problem......with the exeception of a certain group of teams everyone is looking for that QB

At least Doug Whaley is following a plan rather then the scatterbrain thinking that has haunted us in the past.......he biult the team up around the QB position.......take a look at this team even the TE position is solid now.

My solution is still to draft a QB.....and the bills have stacked this roster in a way that we can actually give up several picks to do so. DRAFT your QB.......you will have a QB on a reasonable cap for several years that way.......and pray to god that one of these qbs on the roster can manage the team this year and next so that you dont throw that QB into the fire.

  8. The genius of TSW....

I know I dont get it either.....

Lets look past the very solid drafts that Whaley has had because he cant come up with the ultimate prize......he lets fire him.....maybe the next GM can screw up all the other picks as well?

    It can ALWAYS be worse.

The names being thrown around as the answer jesus........either injury prone or not really showing that they are any better.....

  9. Why don't we define depth players then? Most of them will see the field one way or another. Is there no such thing as a depth player? Duke will likely rotate in, is he a starter or depth? Meeks may see a down week 6. What does he qualify as?

A day 1 starter next year is irrelevant, because we're talking about contributions this year.

The way I see it is you have your starters, as in the 11 you'll have on the field most of the time, and everyone else is depth. Some are good, some are okay, and some are bad. And barring injury, Darby is not one of those 11. Does that make sense?

Let's compare WR then. Harvin/Woods/Watkins are our starters/major contributors. Goodwin is depth/minor contributor. And Goodwin = Darby.

Give me back the shovel Chan.....I will do you a favor and hold it for you

Goodwin and Darby are also horrible comparison's.....

Ah see, I have Robey still at nickel. Darby only on the field as outside CB behind McK and Gilmore. So a dime guy, rotational at best, but Rex uses a lot of 3 S packages, which means less Darby.

Provided that McKelvin is actually healthy enough to play and still on the team......neither of which are a certainty....and before you call that hindsight keep in mind that McKelvin has been injured the LAST TWO YEARS and we went into that draft with McKelvin still rehabbing that foot.....a foot that was not ready for training camp

  10. If McCoy gets kidnapped, Karlos is not depth.

Why does it matter where we can draft QB's? Explain that to me.

This bait a switch stuff in your posts.....come on

Corners are one of the KEY ingredients in Rex Ryans defensive system.....and you need several of them......

There is usually ONE running back on the field at a time......we brought in a top 5 running back......FJ sits behind him......we have so many RB's somebody is gonna get cut

That is why Karlos is depth.....the amount of that position that plays in a game plus the players already on the team

Corner and Running back is NOT a good comparison for this

  11. I don't know why you keep bringing up injuries, when it so clearly demonstrates that you need "depth" to fill in for injured players. Arguing against yourself, really.

    Yeah, he used that wrong.

God this is ridiculous...not sure why im doing this......

THis has nothing do with depth for a injured player.....if Leodis does not return to form......Darby is not depth.......For all we know Leodis could end up being a cut

Why would we pick a high first round QB if we had good one on the roster? Think about it.

Again, what do they call players that are utilized when another gets hurt? It's not width...it'll come to me.

Your twisting it...once again your twisting what Whaley said.....keep in mind this has nothing to do with YOUR evaluation of the QB situation....this has to do with what Whaley specificially said in that piece

  12. No, I don't dig in, I just don't change the story to fit the events. No one at the time of the draft said, "we really need a day one contributor at DB." It was not a need, or at least a pressing one. Then we drafted a DB, and the story changed to make it seem like a great pick at a position we needed or something. It wasn't. It still isn't. Just because he's a Bill and McKelvin got hurt doesn't change that.

With McKelvin healthy, Darby maybe sees 15% of defensive snaps.

What did he say then John?

Correct me if I am wrong.....but was or was not Leodis coming off of an injury.....forget the fact that he is carrying too high of a cap with Marcel coming up for a contract.....Leodis has in fact had injury issues......issues that are still plaging him.

Now....you could say "oh but we have Graham".......but we really dont because we lost Searcy and Graham is moving to Safety

And as far as the Whaley thing....you know as well as I do is that Doug was simply saying we were not gonna be bad enough to pick HIGH enough to have our pick of the QBs........it has nothing to do with the current QBs on the roster...none

  13. EJ had a top 10 defense. Carr had the second worst? EJ had Freddy and Spiller. Can you even name Carr's RB, after MJD exploded?

Darby was a luxury and depth pick. Same with Karlos. Some great STer RB buried on the depth chart isn't getting this team a Superbowl. Miller I'll concede, because we actually had a hole there. Everything else was a luxury.

Also, last draft was a better QB draft than EJ's year.

Darby is absolutely NOT a luxery pick...how can you even say that.....and it became apparent even sooner then I expected

Rex Ryan needs dominant corners to make his great defense work

Leodis is still hurt......and you know there is a possibility he never regains form

Even if he does......he is probably gone after this season

Luxury picks are picks you dont need to contribute immediately......Darby is not a luxery pick

  14.

    Well, but this:

    http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insider/story/_/id/13298048/why-nfl-insiders-overrated-oakland-raiders-qb-derek-carr-nfl

Anyhow i would've at least taken Mettenberger over Cockrell. I would've taken a shot with Aaron Murray or Bryce Petty instead of drafting a guard - we needed a guard but I'd take my chances with that in free agency. I wouldn't have made the trade for Sammy - I would've kept that 2015 first round pick and then perhaps be in a position to deal it for Bradford, Brees or Rivers (who knows). This isn't just hindsight - it's what I believe I would do differently if I were in Whaley's position,

First of all....I respect you saying what you would do instead of just bitching about what was done....I wish more would do that......

I ALSO would have taken Mett over Cockrell.......but now way I pass over John Miller for Petty knowing what I know now....our interior OL play was atrocious and word coming out of came is our OG situation is MUCH improved.......Bryce Petty is coming out of a very poor QB draft and he may end up being NO better then where Manuel is at.....

And regarding the pick for Sammy......they are betting that Sammy Watkins becomes a generational talent....remember word is out there that he is the very best player on the field......in his 2nd year........you simply cannot pass up a talent like that if you have the opportunity to grab it......Bradford is injury prone and expensive....Brees is old and expensive......there are also downsides to these qbs it is NOT a guarantee that they fix every problem and we suddenly become a Super Bowl contender.

I personally LOVE the job Whaley has done.....he has worked with what he has

  15. I think Bills fans generally believe the team has an excellent chance to have a top 3 defense this year. I also think fan consensus is that the Bills are unlikely to have a top 10 QB this year.

For this study, I begin with the 2001 season. I define top 10 QBs as the the top 10 highest passer ratings each season. And I am defining top 3 defenses based on yards per played allowed.

There is no perfect one stat for QB or for team defense, but those are what I chose as being fairly good.

Since the 2001 season there have been 25 teams who had a top 3 defense and did not have a top 10 QB

8 of those teams (32%) missed the playoffs.

4 of those teams (16%) lost a wild card game

3 of those teams (12%) lost a divisional playoff game

7 of those teams (28%) lost a conference championship game

2 of those teams (8%) lost the super bowl

1 of those teams (4%) won the super bowl

Clearly there is a difference between having the 11th best QB and the 32nd best QB.

But based on the arbitrary 10th ranked cut off, this century, if you have a top 3 defense you have 40% chance of advancing to the championship game, a 32% chance of finishing out of the playoffs, and a 28% chance of finishing somewhere in between.

15 years of no playoffs for the bills......at this moment in time I would live with a wildcard loss

  16. Gamblers fallacy-- your chances of acquiring a franchise QB do not, in fact, increase with every QB you take, as each pick is independent of the one prior.

Yes it does. Because you can't win if you don't gamble. Your chance of hitting heads doesn't increase if you get two coin flips, but you still have the possibility of getting heads if your first flip is tails.

The answer is simply not "hey, let's draft as many Quarterbacks as we can, maybe one will stick."

Has anyone said it was that simple? Or said "as many as we can?"

What IS the answer is solid scouting, and building a proper environment for a young QB to step into. Believe it or not, there are other positions that have to be addressed on an NFL team.. I do realize that the QB is the most important piece.

Great, we're there. All our QB's suck. Where's the QB who's gonna step into here? Wait 2-3 years for another project?

Pray tell, how was Carr's rookie season any better than EJ's? I will give you Bridgewater-- I was also of the opinion that the Bills should have traded up to take him but NOT because I felt that taking another QB would increase our chances of hitting. It's quite possible that Bridgewater could regress, or he could take the next step. Tough to say after one year.

Carr played on the worst team in the NFL and had stats equal or better to EJ's rookie year. Teddy could regress, sure. But that's better than having a QB who already stinks.

    Where to start with this.....

At what point in this last draft (which was WIDELY considered to be a poor QB draft) would you have taken a QB?

With the 2nd pick.....were we took Ronald Darby? That Darby pick is lookin REALLY good right now for several reasons

With the 3rd pick.....where we took John Miller? Miller is going to START on this offensive line and the coaches love him

Did we have a 4th round pick?

Now we are getting into players that that you draft for value........a QB that probably gets cut or goes to the practice squad or Karlos Williams........a running who is looking very good in camp....provides special teams.......and came out of a running back ritch draft

Maybe we take the QB where we took the LB (even though our GM has shown a propensity to be VERY good at drafting linebackers

My point is.....we had limited picks.....Whaley made every one of them count........then he went and got two veterans to compete in camp with EJ........

Sometimes....you just cant get everything you want.

  17. Just keep in mind......

The Vikings QB was very highly rated at this time last year

    As was Raiders QB

Where were they drafted.......we have our 1st round pick back.....and a EXTREMELY stacked roster so we can afford to package picks to move up.

I take exception to the OP taking what Whaley saying and twisted it.......all he said was we were not going to be picking at the top of the draft because quite frankly....this team is too good

  18. This is a very accurate assessment. Safe choice=Cassel, Big plays=Tyrod

The Guard play (Incognito AND Miller) is extremely good. The left side of the OL is very, very good. RT (both Seantrel and Kujo) is average.

Tyrod is showing that he can be a pocket passer. He scrambled maybe three times today, and that's enough to keep the box stacked and Sammy-Woods-Harvin-Clay happy.

Not a significant change. I wanted to see it, but am not.

Thanks Astro...I was hoping for that too.....:(

The answer is EJ might just be who he is.....and that might not be what Rex and Roman want to see. I was hoping for a jump.
