For the people that suggest EJ should be shut down for the rest of the season to get healthy, that's absurd. He needs every live snap and defensive look he can digest. If he was close to playing vs. Miami, he should absolutely play at NE if he's ready to go. Do you think Peyton Manning's knees and ankles feel great right now?!?
-
Thad!? Put in Tuel at least we look like a pro offense when he is in there.
As much as i hated Tuel after that Cleveland game, he actually had some nice passes vs. KC and some chemistry with the WR's. If it weren't for that game killing INT on the goaline. ugh! If given several starts i wonder if he could clean that up?

Some updated News from today...the FCC is discussing ending sports broadcasting black outs. This is gaining momentum and could be a reality soon. There would be no more NFL blackouts in any city.
-
I thought EJ was this flame-throwing, extremely mobile QB coming out of FSU. In Buffalo he runs like a 40 yr old, looks awkward in the pocket and throws lazy wrist passes. Great guy, hard worker...but the jury is very much out on him.
-
So Miami has beaten Andrew Luck, Matt Ryan, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, Dalton and Tom Brady. Can they be beaten by Thad Lewis TWICE?!? That would be pretty cool.
-
This doesn't sit well with me. Can the EJ era even get off the ground this season? I mean the guy plays so conservative when he's in there...and he's hurt for a large chunk of games. Now he will have Zero playing time vs. Miami, a hated division rival going into next season. Sad to say I don't think Thad makes the offense worse. We're back to the same team they had against Cincinnati in Week 6. Thad in, EJ and Stevie out.

I guess we have all noticed the loft vs zip thing...but did anyone else notice (IIRC) the first drive or two of the second half against the Bucs? He came out, it seemed, consciously "zipping" the ball, and completed some nice passes in the middle of the field in tight coverage...but then he tried to "zip" one in the center of the field, and the receiver (can't remember who it was now) was just a little ahead of the pass, and it got picked off. It seemed obvious to me, somebody was in his ear about making more decisive throws.
I know, everyone is down on this kid right now, and who knows, maybe you are all right..but by my count, EJ has now played approx 38.5 qrtrs of NFL football...he has been very, very good in about 6 of them, decent in about 18 of them, and not so hot in about 14 of them. It seems like people are drawing lines in the sand about him pretty quick. If we were being honest with ourselves, I think most of us knew it was going to be an up and down year for him...but now, even when he plays pretty well, it isn't good enough for some...let him grow...
I'm really rooting for EJ to succeed but I think Jeff Tuel (as much as i ripped on him) would probably have equal if not better stats in the same 38.5 Qtrs. EJ has got to relax and start playing confidently. He can't aim the ball and be successful. QB's have to get in the flow and play some ball. It's not about being a robot out there.

If we were to quantify the problem, I'd say EJ would benefit from 15% more zip at the expense of loft. I think he could still stand to benefit from increasing his touch to zip ratio on passes less than 10 yards, however. I think zip vs loft vs touch really depends on the route.
I disagree to an extent. His deep passes need more loft to allow the WR's to run under the ball. He did this perfectly on that pass to Goodwin that was dropped. Earlier in the year his deep passes had such a low trajectory they would sail out of bounds.
As for zip, he threw a nice one to Woods in the middle of the field early in the 4th for about 20 yards. That was maybe his best and hardest pass into a window.
Overall though, he does kind of aim the ball and takes something off it on many passes. Rodgers and Brady throw with much more zip. Hopefully when the game slows down for EJ he will start playing instictive football and chuck the ball instead of aiming and trying to limit every little mistake (that tends to backfire).

I am most concerned about a lack of "wow" moments from him. Fans so badly want Manuel to excel so they are taking solace in what amounts to success on a lot of really easy throws. The stats comparing QB's of the last 20 years don't mean a whole lot to me. The league has changed a lot over the last 5 years.
In the past two weeks, the only great throw I thought he made was actually in the Tampa game. It was a deep inside route to Stevie(I believe) that he absolutely drilled and put it where the safety couldn't make a play. Top QB's make these throw all the time. This throw happened during an otherwise absolutely scattershot performance.
Being able to make some impressive throws isn't a guarantee of success either. The JP Losman game in Houston is a prime example. He made several incredible throws that day, including the game-winner to Peerless in the back of the endzone and a breathtaking, indefinsible low trajectory TD bomb to Lee Evans early in the game.
It is still a concern that EJ isn't making some great throws. I also thought he would make more dynamic plays with his feet. Running the ball helped him a lot at FSU, IMO. He's had a couple nice TD runs but not the big plays. I actually thought Poz was going to track him down from behind on that one scramble he had yesterday. Don't really care for his simple assessment of the difference between the NFL and college which was apparently "the hits hurt a lot more".
Everytime he refuses to climb the pocket that one will be in the back of my mind. That's a pretty fair assessment. I still need to see a lot more from EJ to make me feel like he is better than a perennial 6-10 type QB in this league. He seems very robotic in his reads..."1-2-pressure-checkdown!" He's only had maybe 5 throws all season where i said to myself "Ok, we may have something here". He really needs to get confident in his decisions and make them quicker. He obviously has the arm as he flings the ball with relative ease. There was a throw to Woods early in the 4th Qtr yesterday that was really good. It was a rope like 20 yards down the middle of the field into a tight window. I thought that was a great pass. The one to Marquise was a perfect throw too but it went right through Goodwin's arms then he got drilled. Everytime i think we need to un-hitch the EJ wagon he makes a couple throws or wins a game that gives us hope. I bet the coaching staff feels the same way. Will he be able to grow tremendously in 2014 now that he tasted the NFL? Let's hope. I still think it's classic Bills luck that we draft a Fla State QB, but he's the wrong Fla State QB. The one we really want is playing there now and just won the Heisman with virtually the same cast of players EJ had. That guy will end up with the Jets or Jags someday and kill us repeatedly. Ugh.

I don't care as much about TJ's blocking. He's a wide receiver who hasn't had a catch in 3 games. That's awful. I realize he doesn't have Peyton throwing him the ball but obviously he's not a productive NFL receiver. He's like a 5th stringer out there.

I'm from Syracuse and I was big-time psyched when SU Orange football coaches Marrone, et al, were selected to coach the Buffalo Bills.
A lot of SU fans around me thought completely otherwise. They said i was wearing "rose colored glasses" and that Marrone, et al, would never succeed in Buffalo.
They were right.
I was wrong.
Gimme a break. The guy can coach and he knows what playoff caliber NFL teams look like from the inside out. I think the offseason will be telling when they jettison some non performers. I mean c'mon, you can't have guys like TJ Graham on the field when they are so unproductive. He will get better players to coach and it will make a difference. The core here is decent. Manuel is still a question mark though. I don't think Marrone will hitch his career to EJ if he doesn't vastly elevate his game early next season. We'll see.
-
I'll say this, Robey must be from Florida b/c he had one helluva large group of fans at the Tampa game. All these folks entering with me were wearing T-shirts with his picture on it and some wearing his USC jersey. Pretty cool. He's been great although it sucked when he got turned around on the one long TD pass from Glennon to Jackson. Not his best moment.
-
We have no QB. Ugh.
-
whether or not it's warranted is almost immaterial here. it takes more than one season to develop a quarterback and this offseason is crucial to EJ. like it or not, good teams -- teams that show patience and don't bend to kneejerk whims -- give their quarterback a season and a few months to show what they can do.
that's what the Bills evidently signed up for, and that's what teams should do.
that's my opinion.
now, if there's a can't miss guy at the top of the draft when it comes the Bills time to pick, that is completely up for debate. i'd hate to be the person making that decision.
jw
I think the Bills signed up for this but my guess is Marrone is not going to hitch his career to EJ for too long (meaning if he is beaten out in 2014 training camp then so be it). Marrone feels the pressure to win, NOW, and he knows what a bonifide NFL QB looks like. He saw it first hand with Brees. In my opinion, EJ has a very similar feel to Jason Campbell. I live in DC so I saw him drafted 25th overall in 2005 and he came in with big expectations. Campbell like EJ has athleticism for a big man, big hands and a strong arm. For all his athletic talent though, he was kind of clumsy in the pocket (still is) and could never use his speed to his advantage. I think Campbell is playing his best football now but he's already in his 8th year and has never really WOWed anyone. It's early but i see EJ in a similar way right now. Too early to give up on EJ but he definitely cannot stink up the joint in road games at JAX and NE. Those defenses are not world beaters. Campbell just threw for a ton of yards against NE.
-
So if he threw for 4 more yards against a top 3 defense like Carolina, you'd be impressed?
You know what i mean. Besides against Carolina they dinked and dunked their way down the field then got the big PI penalty. Prior to that it was strip fumble and an INT in the 4th Qtr. Not exactly a banner 4th Qtr but yes a great ending.
-
I'm like many people here. I support EJ but haven't really seen anything from him to WOW me yet. I can handle poor efforts like Pittsburgh and Tampa once in a while as long as he occassionally throws a 300 yd 3 TD game in there like other QB's seem to do.
I'm concerned but still want to see what he can do in these last 3 games. I don't care what the O-line looks like or who his receivers are. Have some pocket presence and put the ball on those guys. That's all we can ask. If they drop the ball or deflect it so be it. If he can't do anything on the road then the Bills need to look into bringing in a QB in the offseason to compete with him. Jason Campbell just threw for a bunch of yards at New England. He should be able to light up the Jags and Pats if he has any promise.
-
EJ reminds me of Jason Campbell when he first came in with Washington. It might take him 5-6 seasons to be decent!
-
Agree about EJ. His decision making is just too slow. Can't have that. You can't really teach that stuff. Dude grounds the ball or runs out of bounds on 3rd and longs. Terrible.
i give Marrone and co. Another year or two. I have faith in them.
-
Left the game already. What an embarrassment. I root for EJ but sorry he's just not making quick enough decisions.

The main problem for the Bills is that the stadium is WAY TOO big. It's the 10th largest stadium in the NFL. http://en.wikipedia....ums_by_capacity
I would like to see the new stadium be a 62-65K seat dome (the Bears and Steelers #'s, respectively). The dome will attract the fans who stay home due to the cold, can be used year round, and our greatest asset--the 12th man--will be available in all weather conditions. It would be the loudest stadium in the NFL without a doubt.
It always bewilders me that the "New" Soldier Field seats 61,500 at capacity while Buffalo has to sell 73K tickets. I realize the avg. ticket price in Chicago is more but it's a metro area of over 9 million people! Where's the fairness in blackout rules concerning this. I guess that's why the owners agreed to the 85% rule that Buffalo decided not to use. That's the only reason Tampa is getting all their games on local TV and probably a few others.
-
I love when people get all uptight about releasing a 3rd stringer. Let's face it, the team would be 4-8 with or without Choice. Give the Bills management props for constantly trying to get better.
-
Very interesting, wonder what this means, if anything, for Chandler.
It means if you help in costing the team a game, your job will be looked at very closely. Not sure what they have in store for Stevie. Both were horrible but Chandler should have at least learned from Stevie's mistake a few mins earlier in the game. That was inexcusable.

It'll be interesting to see if Atlanta can be productive at Green Bay this weekend. I don't even know the weather but i assume Cold is in the forecast. The Packers have looked like crud too. If they lay a whooping on the Falcons I'll be even more PO'd about the Toronto game.

I agree. Thad beat them once. He has the confidence and ability to do it again.
