I have been critical of some of the DC work Sean has put out there this year...  but the past 2 weeks he has done a really nice job, both in terms of scheme and playcalling.

Yup.  Again, if he’s an introspective person - and he seems to be that - Dunne did him a huge favor by mapping out for him exactly what he needs to work on.

McD’s main issue may just be that he’s a slow processor - we all know the type.  He can coach during the week but sometimes has trouble making quick adjustments and decisions in the heat of the moment, which seems to cause him to tighten up.  But if he can fix some of those issues and get better at relating to his players (there are plenty of professional development consultants who specialize in this kind of coaching), he can emerge a much better coach.

May not be a popular opinion but I’m impressed by Vrabel as a coach.

Can’t stand him when we play him, but watching him coach against other teams I usually come away impressed.

Totally agree.  Used to think Vrabel was a meathead but now I think he and McDaniels are two of the best coaches in the entire league.  Their teams are prepared and innovative.

And on the critical 4th down he showed blitz and backed out. He definitely called a better drive at the end of the game than he has done other times this year but the problem with his play calling so far this season as DC has definitively NOT been a lack of aggression, whatever Tyler Dunne says. It has been too much aggression. In late game scenarios I always think the play is blitz early, simulate late - i.e. get it into the QBs head early in the drive that you are coming, but on the critical downs play coverage. Now obviously you can't be predictable but as a general rule that is the approach I think is most effective. McDermott has often been guilty of doing it the other way, simulating early and so the QB gets two or three looks at where you might come from and then actually blitzing late in drives. And it has hurt us.

The defensive playcalling all season hasn't been good enough as far as I am concerned. Just not sure I think Sunday was a sign more aggression is the answer.

From what I’ve read this week it sounds like they did a better job of preparing and practicing 2 minute defense last week, including the blitz choreography.

  4. McDermott might really benefit from that hit-piece.  It's basically a published personnel review (albeit a negatively-biased one) spelling out for McD the specific flaws he needs to work on to repair his relationships with his players and fellow staff members, and directing him to loosen up his approach during gameday.   If McD is truly interested in self-correction and self-improvement (and Pegula is willing to be patient with him), the article is kind of a gift.

And honestly, as much as the article rang true to me and as much as I don't love McDermott, it was totally over the line and unfair to him.  He's got serious flaws but he's not a bad person and he truly wants to be great and help his team win.  Dunne went totally overboard.  I hope it does become a positive for McD, that would be beautiful irony.

Tyler effin Dunn. OK then. Let me guess - one source is Booby Hart, the OL coach from the Bills and now on Dabills staff in NYC. The dude is a brutal coach, one of the worst as an OL coach and many players have said this. But yeah Tyler, McD is hated. BY YOU the biggest tool in Buffalo.

Gimme a break this artickle is so shite it's not even funny,. And BTW Tyler - McGovern wears Jordans on gameday!

What are you talking about?  Bobby Hart is a player.  Booby Hart is maybe a stripper you know?  This is barely legible stuff here.

  6. This is, in my memory at least, one of the all-time most savage hit pieces ever put out there by a sports writer.  EVER.  It is a straight-up hit job and Dunne surely knows it.

Not saying any of it is wrong, in fact it all makes COMPLETE sense to me and is exactly what I'd assumed based on the results on the field, the demeanor of McD's press conferences, and the rest of the "smoke" surrounding the franchise over the past few years (Dabs, Leslie, Diggs, etc.).

    But it is SAVAGE.

(I will add, some of you are just conditioned to completely distrust "media elites" no matter what, but especially when the message is something you'd rather not hear.  You should, um, do some work on that.)

What you see as “improvement” from Brown, I see as a blocking scheme designed by the Bills to mask Brown’s pass blocking deficiencies.

As said earlier in the thread, he is still the weakest link on the line, and if there is a RT in the draft with a first or second round grade the Bills like, I hope they draft them.

Even if he is playing at a 17mil per year level as you think(which he is not), the Bills aren’t paying him that much, and a replacement would need to be drafted anyway.

The weakest link of the line this year has probably been Morse.

  8. I don’t know how the NFL can be pleased with its product today - and for much of this season.  I don’t know if it’s offseason practice restrictions, talent parity, officiating or what - but this is the worst slate of 1pm games I can ever remember.  It’s like watching preseason football.  Garbage.

Pegula will change his tune if and when Josh Allen ever requests a trade or expresses any other dissatisfaction with how the organization is run.   I really don't want #17 to end up being the Dan Marino of the modern era, all due to late game coaching blunders.   Josh Allen is buffalo.  He sells the tickets that make Pegula all that money.   In the end, his sway should supersede that of McD or even Beane.

    Like Terry listened to Eichel?

  10. From today’s Athletic, former GM Randy Mueller:

To be fair, some of the Bills’ issues are injury-related, but some have been a function of McDermott’s ill-timed blitzes and less-than-ideal execution. By replacing his defensive coordinator last off-season and installing himself, he has to be directly accountable for the unit’s results. His somewhat defensive responses to questions about his decisions are seen by some as an effort to pass the buck. I would love to see more transparent self-accountability. Sometimes a little humility can go a long way.
