  1. Dahl passed away in 1990 ... did it take this long? Maybe his family, or estate was -- as did Suess' for the Grinch movie with Carrey. I think most of the new movie is truer to the book. The difficulty comes in that it is a children's book, very short, very quick read. Anyone who does a screen adaptation needs to add things to it. The book could easily be done in a 30 minute animate show for TV (an hour at tops, if you stick enough commercials in). The original added all the school scenes in -- which only served to provide a cameo for a British actor and highlight Charlie's poverty (which I think was sufficiently highlighted in this movie). The new movie adds the dimension of Willy's dad, which is appropriate for the way in which the character was developed for this adaptation -- is further highlights Charlie as the hero. It's not Willy Wonka saving a family from poverty, it's Charlie teaching a lesson on the importance of family.
  2. Hmmm, didn't see it, IMDB.com doesn't list it, did it happen? Not to my knowledge
  3. I generally have not enjoyed Burton -- this one just struck me the right way. Maybe this will eventually be a "lousy movie that I liked" as the one thread talked about.
  4. The Dr. Wonka sub-plot wasn't necessary in the book, but I thought that Roald Dahl underdeveloped Willy Wonka as a character. I think that Burton did a great job within the way he portrayed Wonka developing why Willy was the way he was. He revulsion for parents, his childness, his not caring what others think ... It also gave Burton another opportunity to stress the importance of family, reiterating the importance that the true hero of the novel is Charlie. That is the most disappointing part of the Gene Wilder version (though I love Wilder in the role) -- Willy Wonka is the hero, saving a family from poverty. Duh ... the book is called CHARLIE and the Chocolate Factory for a reason. This movie fixed that problem.
  5. One thing my wife & I really appreciated was the fact that they included Mr. Bucket in this film (like the book). Not the normal way of doing things (usually nowadays they mess up the famliy a little more), but well received here. No, I don't appreciate Depp politically either, but as an actor, he is really pulling off some far fetched roles.
  6. I went to see this with my wife on Friday. We both went skeptical -- we enjoy the original (as cheesy as it was -- see another thread on that issue), and the whole issue of Johnny Depp being an adrogynous, Michael Jackson look-a-like scared us. We both loved it. Depp is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors (after I hated him for so long). This Willy Wonka is as creative and well done as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates. It was family friendly -- always important in our family. The messages were even stronger than the first. And most importantly, Charlie is the hero, not Wonka. Anyone else see it? What did you think?
  7. 10.5 was a made for TV movie on NBC last year -- so no kudos to the minor networks there. It was OK, nothing great, typical mediocre network acting/special effects
  8. I still think that it's actually Urkel in a old-white-man suit
  9. Ooo ahh Sabres on the warpath!
  10. IIRC, Ruutu was part of the trade for Hasek
  11. ... but my firefox extension still has it at yellow ... ... is something wrong with me? or my firefox? or my FF extension? /sarcasm
  12. While I lived in WI, we advocated putting up a 100' wall around Illinois, then filling it with water ...
  13. who named their team after the Jets?
  14. it looks like we're full
  15. Create a team and look for the league called: Unofficial TBD League Initially, make your team name match your user name on TSW
  16. I am still looking for 4 tickets -- if you have seasons and don't want this game, we'll take them. PM me please
  17. dumping a former franchise QB who had slipped in recent years and is sent packing, taking swipes at the team's decision vs. relegating the current starting QB who has never been better than average who quietly accepts the backup role and is ready to come off the bench Not really similar situations ...
  18. but you still receive your signing bonus -- that's your insurance. That's why players play for lower amounts but receive the S.B. "Nuts, I got cut this year, so I lose my 3.4 million (unless someone else signs me). But I received my 7.9 million when I signed the contract 3 years ago."
  19. I killed a squirrel on my bicycle when I was 16 -- the same year that I almost hit a deer going 45 mph near Letchworth State Park (on bike). I have hit a pheasant (not a peasant) which exploded like a feather pillow. And I have hit a bobcat.
  20. We are looking for 4 tickets together for the preseason game. We are willing to pay, but obviously would like to keep the cost minimal. This is my son's 8th birthday -- and his third trek up for the kids day game. Anyone? Anyone?
  21. gotta love this kinder, gentler TSW
  22. I haven't seen WOTW yet, but it's hard to argue with a score by John Williams -- quite possibly one of the greatest composers (of a classical genre, not modern) of our era. Kinda like dismissing a film by Spielberg because it's a remake of DeMille.
  23. Is that where the drug runners from Lost got their money from?
  24. cool. Dufek, sounds more like an insult
