The Athletic, in its newsletter "The Pulse" polled its readers with the question: Which QB would you rather have quarterbacking your team, Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson? Unfortunately The Athletic is a paid subscription so I can't link it... and moreover there is not yet an article accompanying the poll, just the email newsletter "The Pulse." Finally no figures are given as to the number of respondents, only the percentages. The results... Toohill played 14 snaps this preaseason. He didn't make the team based on his preseason performance, he made the team based on his pre-Bills career. Toohill, Dawuane Smoot, Austin Johnson, Nicholas Morrow, Mack Hollins, and Mike Edwards were the veterans brought in to solidify the roster. In years past it was guys like Jordan Phillips and Shaq Lawson. And Toohill is more proven and likely better than Kingsley Jonathan.

One of the little inside jokes here in our community is that when a player with some name recognition becomes available (cut, waived, on the trade market, etc) a topic is inevitable created for that player (i.e. - Mike White). The more jaded among us have denigrated such topics, particularly for players we think/know are washed up by posting "I've heard of him!" This implies that it's only casual, uninformed fans that start such topics and more knowledgable fans would never do so because ("we know") said player is a "has been" or "never was." I figured we can put all these players in the same bucket. There are currently topics for QB Mike White and for disgruntled LB Ernest Jones IV. Here's another one we've all heard of... Denzel Mims... an elite and highly-drafted athlete who became expendable in part because the Jaguars signed Gabriel Davis as a free agent. Mims' measurables are off the chats and hey... Likely sees the holes better. The counter to that is that "patience" is also considered a good running back trait. Our strengths are also our weaknesses. The story is that the Bills O-line played well and all the running backs (including Evans and Gore) looked good. It was a predictable performance by the blockers after we and everyone else roasted them after the Bears game. The one component the Bills still lack is a big power back. I think so... he and Chrissie Hynde had a daughter together, right?

If we bring in a QB is should be a PROVEN backup, not someone who has never experienced any success in the NFL. What would be negligent is if Beane has not spoken with his agent and asked: 1) How much does Ryan want? 2) What sort of role is he interested in? I'm pretty sure that conversation has taken place. I'm pretty sure Beane can't put a gun to Tannehill's head and force him to come in for a... tryout. Thank you for a good post that adds value. The grey is if Josh misses 4 games and what the teams record is after those 4 games and what impact that has in the standings and playoff seeding.
