List of whipping boys we should have kept
silvermike replied to GrudginglyPessimistic's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know if I'm reading the original poster wrong, but I think there's a difference between players we lost and should have kept (some of which the fans were begging to see kept around), and losing players at the end of a year or two of mistaken fan/media hatred. That's the story of Glenn Parker. They didn't just cut him for a rookie, they cut him after Chuck Dickerson spent two hours a day blaming him for everything wrong with our offense. TBD whipping boys like Travis/Willis fit the deal, although both of them also spent some effort getting their own tickets out of town. If Donte Whitner leaves town after this contract and becomes an all pro, he'd belong on this list. -
List of whipping boys we should have kept

I forget now - did the fans want Reuben out of town or was that only Gregg Williams' crusade? -
Yeah, that's bizarre. The only thing I can imagine that he means is that GMs are saying things like "Buffalo sucked last year, TO must suck too." That doesn't make sense, but maybe it's going on? Teams are looking at our crummy offense and deciding they want no part of it. That's not really what scapegoat means, but maybe he's using it wrong.

Even if Aaron Maybin's 2010 season is like his 2009 season exactly, after which he is cut and winds up in the UFL for the rest of his career, he can't live up to the top-5 and top-1 picks this team has botched. For that, he'd have to tear CJ Spiller's Achilles in training camp, take a drive-saving roughing the passer penalty on Brady denying us a sure victory, and broker a deal to move to team to San Antonio. As it is, he's just a washout - 4-5 guys like him show up in the first round of every draft. And that's assuming he's really not going to improve.

It's really not clear yet what happened. But we know something bad happened at Michael Vick's party; we know Michael Vick is a guy who makes bad decisions, and we know if Vick does something wrong, the NFL is going to kick him out forever. That's enough to make me start following the story to see if this is going to be the end of Vick's career. But it doesn't guarantee it.

I think it's fairly safe that the Bills wouldn't move to Jacksonville if the Jags went to LA, right?

Great opportunity for a trade with San Diego

I think I missed the gap where McNeill went from a top young LT to just another guy - was it injuries? Flash in the pan? -
Who will score the Bills' first touchdown?
silvermike replied to WickedGame's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Are you kidding? He'll at least need to score the last TD of the season, to prove he's not injury-prone. And all the ones in between, to prove he's an every-down player. THEN we'll know he wasn't a bust. -
If Haynesworth wanted a guarantee he'd only pay in a 4-3, then he should have negotiated for it. It's not a totally bizarre world where teams change defensive arrangement. He could have demanded that the contract void if they switched to a 3-4 front, or he could have signed with a team that gave him that guarantee. It's not like he was coerced into signing with a gun at his head. And if all 32 teams wouldn't meet his demands, he could always have retired.

Jamaal Brown to the Redskins

Glazer's saying it's for a conditional draft pick, but nothing about which round. -
Of course, when I have a good reason to miss a day of work, I don't usually take the previous week off without telling anyone why. But ultimately, I don't care about Marshawn's petty crimes or slacker attitude. I care if he's a guy who can add something to the Bills' offense. I think he's the 3rd best RB on the roster, and it sounds like Gailey thinks so too. I'll change my mind when he does something to change it.

I don't think the Seahawks are offering more than token compensation for Marshawn. I'd look for him to be put on IR after an early season injury.

LT Marcus McNeill doesn't sign RFA tender
silvermike replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is correct - restricted free agents can't change teams after the draft without a trade (or the original team can lift the tender). So we're going to have to make our own trade for him, AND pay him like a top-10 LT. That said, he really seems to be the kind of guy we WANT to spend a high pick on and sign. I'd try to work out a trade with San Diego along these lines: We sent our 2011 first round pick, unless it's in the top 10, in which case we send them a 2011 2nd and a 2012 1st. -
I think we'll need to be patient with Easley, but he'll be a player. I'd seem him in a 5th WR/ST role in 2010, before pushing for serious playing time in 2011 and starting by 2012.

Favorite non-Bill player ever likely to retire

Stabbed a stake in the hearts of the Patriots and then never caught another pass. -
I think Jim Kelly runs a private club for the players.

NFLPA--not the smartest guys in the room
silvermike replied to Mr. WEO's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I pay to see the best football in the world. That doesn't exist without these players, but unless they have a secret plan to form an independent league for 2011, it doesn't exist without the owners, either. It only exists in 2011 if they get together and strike a deal, and the details of that deal don't really concern me; the players are well paid and the owners make good profits. Separate from that, as long as there's revenue sharing and/or a salary cap that assures the teams will be on equal footing, I don't care. I don't care if the players share 99% of the revenue evenly team-by-team or 1%. -
Re: Jim Kelly's California QB theory debunked
silvermike replied to USABuffaloFan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And needless to say, there are plenty of people in every state who have the laidback, surfer-dude mentality. The whole question is pointless: we need to evaluate individual quarterbacks, and stop imagining this group of "California QBs" has any real relevance. -
I would guess that if Gaither has signed his tender, he's resigned himself to playing for the Ravens this year, and thus, he loses his leverage to demand a trade. If the trade's already done, I'd guess we'd've heard about it by now.

Pro Football Weekly has us dead last
silvermike replied to Albany,n.y.'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is a good test for Coach Gailey - the players read these things, and they'll be talking about it. Does he put a chip on their shoulders, or let them play to expectations? -
most o-line combo's in the league
silvermike replied to tomc702's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's nine total combos, but it may have switched even more often in there - if someone went out for a game and came back the next week, that's three different lines in a row, but only two different ones 'overall.' And if this is starters, it ignores how often a lineman would miss the second half due to injury, etc. If we can average at least 14 starts from our starting 5 on Week One, we'll have a better offense. -
Hilarious! Seriously, though, I think it's telling that Russell hasn't shown any interest in the AFL/UFL/CFL either. He's really got nothing. Struggling QBs who at least have a reason to get up in the morning - like JP - went to minor leagues to show they had some stuff to offer. Russell would be embarrassed in any league.
