I missed the game yesterday. I never, ever, ever miss Bills games. On the rare occasions that I do, I used to be able to record them and watch them back later. No longer a possibility.

I already watched the highlights. I already read some of what's in the media about the game.

What I'm looking for is a sober, accurate recap of how the game really went from one of our many great posters here, who can keep emotion out of it to some degree. Not angry shouting and over-simplified Monday morning quarterback diatribes or crazy nonsense. I realize this may be an impossible task on this forum after a bad loss. But...I'm just very curious how this game went and how it wound up with the outcome it did.

What did the offense do well and not do well? Was Dorsey's playcalling and personnel usage diverse and interesting, or was it static and uncreative? Was the pass protection any good? How was the run game? How did Josh play? How did the defensive line do without Ed Oliver? Did Von Miller make any impact? Did Dorian Williams look decent? How did the corners play? Elam? Why were the Pats able to score so many points with such a moribund offense?

Any input and reasonable, non-emotionally-tinged information or recaps would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

We are not very good right now

    First half:

    They scored on first drive

Allen threw a pick on his first play.

We ran #4 until it didn't work anymore

#13 did not show up again

    #88 dropped another big one

The worst pass rush in the NFL had Allen running and throwing on the run

Allen has been told not to run down field and he left a lot of yards out there while throwing desperation passes to his uninterested cast

    We missed FG's

We scored 3 points in the 3 first half

    second half:

Our defense could not stop Mac Jones (I can't believe I said it)

We had a lot of flags, especially defensive holding and PIbig

The Pats* did the same thing without the flags

Allen missed on a wide open bomb

We missed the play of Milano, Jones, Oliver and Tre - but still should stop this terrible Pats* offense

We had no pass rush, the edge rush was non existent, when we blitzed they picked it up

Poyer forced a fumble and Bernard recovered - other than that the defense made no plays and they were uninspired and terrible

Diggs played hard and was doubled all day - he had a very nice TD run after catch though - other than that the offense made no plays and they were uninspired and terrible

We took the lead somehow and got the 2 points for 25-22 lead with less than 2 mins left - what could go wrong?

Our defense promptly gave up 75 yards on 7 plays - the Pats* got half of the yards on the first play putting themselves in long FG range right off the bat, this was on a screen pass that they ran all game and we failed to cover

    The Pats* scored and won

Our defense gave up 29 points to a team that averaged 12 points per game

Afterwards our coach did not have answers, Allen did not have answers, neither did anyone else

We are not very good right now - we look like a run of the mill 0.500 team that can win or lose on any week to any opponent

  2. Something is rotten in Denmark that is for sure.

Josh is not having fun and the team spirit is not there - but is the bad play killing the team spirit, or is the lack of team spirit leading to the bad play?

    Factors to consider:

    • Coaching:  Daboll gone and Dorsey running a lot of the same system but not doing it nearly as well
    • Familiarity:  Teams know what we do and how to stop us, there are no surprises
    • Work Ethic:  Allen's off seasons of hard work and fundamentals is a thing of the past, he is a celebrity now (for awhile)
    • How we play him:  The taming of Josh (no more planned runs, way less deep balls)
    • Supporting cast:  Failure to develop top talent around Josh (example: Knox is average, Davis far below average, no slot replacement for Beasley, a mediocre OL, a mediocre running game); a lack of team speed to make big plays.   We have Diggs and that is all.

Maybe we fix the first thing on the list and everything else gets better.

I am done with Dorsey right now.

  3. Looking like the 12 formation is not effective.  We still do not run good enough, even with 2 TE's.

Our #2 WR does not contribute and #88 drops a key pass every game.

The offensive talent does not scare anyone.  Keys to stopping them are well known:

Double Diggs + keep Allen from running + make him be patient with short passes + blitz on the right side of the OL =>  the Bills will beat themselves.

I think no Big Ed and obviously Jones was huge. Ed has been a terror, getting pressure in the middle which turns into the ends getting sacks.

Also Dodson killed us. Was a noticeable difference without Dorian, I have no clue what happened to him but we need him. Kid is legit, no Milano but he's good

Also, Josh was throwing high or low on many passes, some were caught but the throw prevented any yac.

I still cannot believe that the defense gave up long TD drives to start the game and to end the game, failing to hold a lead.

I saw Dorian make a few errors in assignment, then he was out, poof.  They got worse without him.

I understand that Oliver and D Jones were out but what about our edge rush?   Von Miller did not contribute.  Epenesa  and Floyd were both also MIA.   Did Eppy even dress for the game?

  5. Like a lot of losses in Gillette, we lost it in the trenches.

Josh was not at his best and part of it was the poor pass protection from the OL.  The bigger problem of course is that the offense is Allen and Diggs.  There are no playmakers emerging, maybe Cook and Kincaid, but Knox and Davis should not start next week.  Message time.

The worse part of today was the defense.  They played a team that averages 12 points a game and they got rolled over when it counted most.  Lots of injuries but still should have played better.

You think it's coincidence that the two of smallest markets are taking place in this experiment.   Like there was another experiment last time they played in London as that was streamed on Yahoo only vs Jaguars.  You think they would put a team like the Cowboys in this experiment?

Jacksonville’s owner wants to play in London.  If he could, he would move the team there.

The Patriots own two jets. But Pegula can’t fix up one old Concorde to cut the flight time? Pegula is cheap.

It is not the flight time. It the effect that the 5 time zone changes has on you body and on your eating and sleeping habits.

The Bills should have left Buffalo on Tuesday, after the Monday off day for the players to recover.   It takes several days to acclimate to the time change. It would be better to practice while acclimating to the change then to play a game when your feeling like crap.

Kinda lost in the mix...but when things went to crap and time was running out, some people worried about Josh going full hero ball.  I'm sure he was tempted, but I'll admit I was a bit surprised to see he didn't.

Maybe he actually took that Week One disaster to heart.  Too early to tell, but Sun. was at least encouraging in that regard.

I’m curious to know what you think about this thing:

in all their private thoughts, what do you think are the Josh’s and Stefon’s feelings about our real chance to compete for the SB after the London debacle, the way the offense performed and considering all the brutal injuries we suffered ?

Do you think they still are positive about the big picture and their chance to get there, that they still think we have all the weapons needed to reach that goal, or do they think that at the moment, considering everything, it could become another season headed nowhere, maybe a round or two in the playoffs at max ?

What will be their vision right now ? With all that is happening again to them this year, i wouldn’t blame them if thinking that this could be another season without having chance to win the SB.

  10. My 5 game summary.

Defense has been very good, bolstered by the play of Bernard, Milano and a strong DL rotation.  Injuries are a problem. Depth at CB and LB were an issue to start the season and the limited depth we had will be tested going forward.  Lots of key players are now out, just like last season.

The Offense is inconsistent and so far not able to score enough versus better defenses.   Allen’s weapons are Diggs and a bunch of average receivers and backs.  Dorsey is not able to really utilize Knox/Kincaid so far.  Allen has been sometimes good, sometimes great, and sometimes unable to find receivers and make plays.  As always, he is the key.  A positive has been the play of the OL.

Coaching -  Bills were not properly prepared to play in both of their losses. The London game had a ponderously poor plan to arrive Friday morning and play Sunday, overthinking the obvious once again.

Tough schedule ahead. Division title possible but lots of work to do.

The team is still good enough to win it all if they can stay healthy and peak at playoff time.

We still could’ve went for it.

I do find it somewhat amusing that Orton is hated for sliding and living to fight another down, and fast forward near 10 years later and we are all begging Allen to slide and not try run through linebackers.

We needed the first down. There was no living for another play.  That was it, and he surrendered.

Allen has more than proved his toughness.  We want Allen to slide when he actually can, when there is another play.

I find it amusing that you don’t see the difference.

It's a trap game.  They always play us tough and we are coming off a high.  This is an evolutionary step,we need to beat a team we should beat coming off a game like the fins.

Not a trap game.  They are a playoff team that beat us in the last meeting.  We owe them an azz kicking.

The only issue is the travel and the related distractions.  We are veteran team now, one that has overcome adversity in the past, and we should be able to manage this situation.

We need a calm and patient Josh and another good effort by the McDefense.  If we get these things then the score is:

    Bills - 31

    Jax - 17

2022 Draft which was looking pretty awful last year coming back with a vengeance:

    Elam, Cook, Bernard, Shakir, Benford.

Some key players in here. As well as some guys who will need to be counted on in the near future.

Could end up being a good draft class even if Elam does not hit.

Sometimes people just need to be patient

    People focused on his size.

Benard is the same size as his teammate, All Pro Matt Milano.  It is the size of your LBs are when your defense is focused on stopping the pass. If the opponent runs, then you need to have the DL tie up blockers and let the LBs run to the ball.

  14. Just watched the “Fastest 3 Minutes” with Chris Berman on MNF.    For me it’s a nostalgic take-off of Howard Cosell’s “halftime highlights” segment that started in the 70’s.  Back then, it was first national TV recap of all the games and it really made MNF special.

Tuesday morning in my Jr High hallways we were talking about the MNF game and the halftime highlights.

The game has evolved, and continues to be, an offensive game. However, it seems that teams have started to counter this with both scheme (2 high safeties, etc) and personnel.

There are hosts of other teams with dynamic pass rushers, good defenses and parity seems to be at an all-time high.

Even some of the best offenses of years past aren’t nearly as dangerous or unstoppable as they seemed to have been previously.

I personally think it’s great for the game, but why? Have defenses started to catch up? Is this just an illusion to me? Or are we starting to see a transition back towards prioritizing pieces of the defensive side of the ball?

Defensive players today have to be fast and fearless.  Just being strong and willing to tackle is not enough in todays game.   Look at our linebackers today compared to the proto-type LBs from the 70/80/90’s.   This position has completely evolved to help support the passing game but fast and strong enough to snuff the run.

We’re are fortunate as Benard looks to be in the Milano mold and we have two LBs capable of keeping an offense like Miami’s at bay.

Did the Bills just give the league the playbook on how to stop the “high scoring” Miami Offense or is just because we have such a good D?

Lots of really good X’s and O’s Experts on this board - what say you??

McDermott definitely exposed a few things that other teams will use against Miami in the future.

However, scheme alone only gets you so far - you have to have the horses and they have to execute.

We have some very good, and even underrated, players on defense.  For example, most teams do not have LBs that fly to the ball like Milano and Bernard.

    Bummer disclaimer.

Anybody wanna talk about how impactful Miami's offensive line injuries were today? From being down their starting OC at kickoff, to losing their LT in-game...

That progression of o-line unavailability no doubt helped the Bills tremendously. Armstead left the game late in the 2nd quarter, right around the time the Bills defense was absolutely locking down the Dolphins offense.

Go to to FinHeaven and that is all they talk about.  They are the only team that gets injuries and the only team that gets bad calls from the refs.

You have to overcome injuries.  Last year we lost pretty much the entire secondary and never had any games with all the starters - we still finished 13-3.

Anyone know what the meaning of all this 🤔 is?  Diggs and Allen did it a few times.  Did the Dolphins do something this week?

Some Dolphins wore "wondering why" emoji tee-shirt into the stadium.  Some were wondering why they were not the favorites for the game.

A team that worries about the point spread is probably not prepared.    Now they know that they were playing the Bills defense, not  Denver.

  19. Great win today.  One of the top regular season wins ever when I think about.  Glad it was at home for our fans.

Miami is not going away anytime soon so hopefully the rest of the league sees what it takes to slow down that offense and Miami losses a bunch more times.  McD had it figured out today.

The Bills need to enjoy it for a day, then back to work.  Jax in London will be tough.

    Go Bills !!!
