1. This staff is easily the best Bills coaching staff since (at least) the Chuck Knox staff that he brought with him from the LA Rams....Ironicalyy much of this talent comes from the incredibly lucky timing of the St Louis rams breakup coupled with the Mcnally & Bobby April Holdover....

It feels good to not be so mismatched on the sidelines....ofcourse why have we always had to tolerate such poor coaching...Ralph has always imposed his own salary cap on his own coaching staff....incredibly dumb..but thats what he does

    776939

    ???

I think that Levy's staff was as good or better than Knox's.

Also, Ralph has pretty much let his coaches pick their own staff. He does seem less willing to pay extravagantly for coaches (unlike Snyder and some others).

  2. Exactly, I didn't hear much about this kid in camp, and I thought they were crazy by keeping this guy over Baker or one or two others.....but wow, this guy was around the ball on almost every play, and chances are he doesn't even know what he's doing yet.

    776332

Actually the kept Thomas over Eric King (one of TD's dreft picks).

Thomas has more experience and from the looks of it he plays the game very hard.

  3. You know what else is weird?  Today was a perfect example of LAST YEAR'S PLAN.  TD's plan last year was to win with defense, special teams and running the ball, and JP's job was just to not lose the game.  'Xactly what Jauron's formula seems to be.

Also, Mularkey finally got us a win.

    Good point! :)

  4. At first glace at the stats, you'd think Tripplett wasn't any great shakes.

He was credited with one assist, but a look at the video will prove otherwise.

His pursuit of Culpepper caused Culpepper to throw Crowell's INT.

He was being double-teamed so Denney got the sack putting them in 3rd and 32.

He and Kyle Williams, or he and Kelsay, or Schobel, constantly broke down the pocket.

    776748

Good post. There is a lot more to the play of interior lineman than stats. Triplett played well. Kyle Williams already looks like the real deal. I think that McCargo will develop as well.

I think the talent on DL is good. I am not nearly as excited about out OL talent though.

  5. We beat the Fish!!!! Can a brother get a amen!!!! Anyone?.....Hello?....This is Buffalo!!!!!!!!!!!!!Squish ths Fish!!!!!!!!!

    776886

Sure it's great. nI was born in '58 and know about "the rivalry".

I will say this, the rivalry has cooled down lately but when both teams get to contender status it will heat up.

  6. Patience was rewarded. Lindell, Reed, Denney, Wire, you've named them.

It's beginning to look like our patience with the rehabbing Willis will bear fruit as well.

Hopefully we'll have the same patience with Spikes.

    776728

Bingo! Patience is needed with some of these guys. Why develop them for 3-4 years and then let another team benefit from it?

Lindell - Ever since we got a new LS he has been much improved.

I has pleased to see the Bills re-sign Denney. He is solid against the run and can play inside if we need him to. Re-signing him was better than any of the other options out there at the time.

I was skeptical on the Josh Reed re-signing and we shall see if he continues to develop.

Wire - I think we all know he is in the team because of the emphasis on special teams.

  7. Reed was on the 17, the LOS was the 15.

He obviously DID engage the defensive player before the ball was caught - it wasn't even close.  You're wearing your homer glasses if you can't tell; Reed's hands were in front of him and pushing the defender while the ball was in the air.  That's engaging.  He did sometihng similar against Pittsburgh a couple years ago that also cancelled a touchdown and a probable playoff berth.

Sorry guys, but the refs aren't out to get us every single week (only against the Patriots, apparantly).

I also like how nobody seems to think that the JPL fumble (that was blown dead due to forward progress) was a case of the refs trying to screw the Dolphins.  (again, it was a good call to protect the QB, very common, and the ref started to blow the whistle right before the fumble).

    CW

    776460

If your interpretation is correct then it was the right cll. Very close. These calls always seem to go against us. Next time we need to rebound from the penealty and score anyway. That is the mark of a mature team.

  8. Shame on me.  I forgot to mention Ellison.  He's been holding his own, especially today.

Ellison, Whitner, and Simpson, with McCargo and Williams....I'm overwhelmed by these guys so far.

    776435

    Which begs the questions:

1 - Were our veterans that over rated?

2 - Was the defense that poorly coached last season?

  9. Ok, I'm here to take my licks, watched the whole thing with Ramius, and got hell all day long.

One thing I'm wondering, is Miami tha bad, or ar the Bills that good, or is there some combination of both?

Ok, I'm ready to take my licks.

    776397

It is a combination of both. The Bills still have much work to do.

  10. This team doesn't look anything like the old Bills. WOW I can't believe I just saw that.

    776326

They sure do look better prepared then the Mularkey Bills, and they are executing more plays. There is still a long ways to go but so far I am pleased with the progress.

I never expected the defense to looks so good this early in the season.

  11. State your reason.

    773809

The Dolphins. No reason should be needed but it goes back to the Shula years and 0-for-the-70's. My disdain for that team has never subsided. Marino, Duper and Clayton, Cox, and Louis Oliver only added to it.

2nd is the Patsies. II just can't help but wonder how they get so much good fortune. I have never seen one team get so many calls in their favor. Think about "just give it to them", the dead man fumble recovery, the "tuck rule", holding Marshall Faulk and company on just about every play in the Super Bowl and still getting away with it, Marcia Brady, Teddy Bruschi, and those obnoxiuos fans with those obnoxius accent.

  12. Yup, I would LOVE to ignore every, single thing that went on last year while we went 5-11, and happened to be a national embarassment; I would prefer to act as if none of it ever happened; while also allowing a washed up, 15 year veteran with hamstring problems to go as opposed to building the foundation of a new defense with said Defensive Back. DB's who can't run, and have perpetual hamstring problems go on my cut list, but what do I know? Call it revisionist history, I prefer to call it ignorance is bliss, but either way, your idea (or maybe it was subconsciously mine) to "ignore last season" is a terrific one!

TROY VINCENT FOR PRESIDENT! Oops, he already is.

TROY VINCENT IN THE HALL OF FAME.

    TROY VINCENT IS SANTA CLAUSE!

    Good riddance.

Did we forget that on top of all of this, Troy Vincent was one of the better "Bill Killers" during his time in Miami? If any of us believe in karma, this signing was doomed from the beginning.

Similar to having your mascot be a Bison, and then name your team after "Buffalo Bill" Cody, known worldwide as the individual who has slaughtered the most bison in the history of planet Earth. But why digress?

Troy Vincent is, and should be a distant memory.

    773667

so ... you don't like Troy?

  13. Bull sh--.  Who's the anchor on the NE line?  How about Denver?  Carolina??

Bad offensive lines like Oakland are built by using high picks on 1 guy.  Good lines in the current era are built by having a depth of mid range guys with solid fundamentals who can play more than 1 position.

    772040

True that you don't need to use all high picks but the best lines in Bills history and the best lines today still tend to have Pro Bowlers on them.

For the Bills, I am talking about guys like Billy Shaw, Stew Barber, Joe D, Reggie McKenzie, Joe Devlin, Jim Ritcher, Will Wolford and Rueben Brown.

Every now and then you strike gold with a Kent Hull or a House Ballard but many of the top players are first rounders or at least day one picks.

  14. He's gone.

They've already decided they like what they've seen in Ko Simpson, otherwise they would have cut  a guy like Aaron Merz & put him on the PS instead of Stith and then re-signed Leonhard if they felt they needed a healthy body at S.  I doubt the league is hovering over the waiver wire hoping to claim Aaron Merz.

    772158

You never know. Bellichek may need a guy like Merz for the rematch in Buffalo.

  15. I guess this is the end of Vincent's career as a Bill.  So let's look at his accomplishments during his tenure...

    1. Broke JP's leg

    2. Locker room lawyer

    3. NFLPA bigshot

That's all I can come up with.

Troy we hardly knew ye.  Thanks for the coaching offer, but that's what we have COACHES for.

    772043

    Pretty harsh assessment.

He strikes me as a class act, someone who took the time to help the rookies.

  16. And despite the late game collaspe, this line played really well against one of the best front 7s in the league.  They were constantly moving the ball down the field.  They were awesome if you consider this was their first game together.  I honestly believe this line (with a little more depth and maybe an upgrade at one of the guards spots) can be a really good one if they can stay together for several years.

    770690

A lot of people call Sunday's game a late game collapse by the OL. Late game? They were completely dominated from 9:25 of the 3rd quarter to the end of the game. That is 24 minutes and 25 seconds or 41% of the game. In that time they failed to open a hole on 4th and 1, scored 0 points, had 0 first downs, gave up 2 points on offense, and gave up 2 very key sacks.

I am hopeful that the OL problems for that last 41% were more related to schemes than sheer talent, strength, and will. If not it will be another long season.

  17. I really don't think our line looked too bad yesterday.  Except for Gandy on a couple plays we looked much improved.  Am I the only one who thinks this?

    770380

The story of their game has to be: 1) no push on the 4th and 1; 2) a sack for a safety; and 3) a sack on our last possesion. They were horrible in the 2nd half which to me offset a very good first half.

Improved over last season? Maybe, but last season is a poor measuring stick.

I think they can develop as the season progresses but if I were Marv my prioirity for the off season would be to upgrade the talent at LT, RG and LG.

  18. If his "ankle" is so bad that it caused him to drop from a 4.2 to a 2.9 YPA average, why not sit him. I have several problems with the "U"-boy.

    1) He doesn't have good situational awareness in the game. He never seems to find the big hole and attack it.

    2) He doesn't seem to CARE whether he wins or loses. Not the type of guy I want for a feature back.

    3) A-train seemed to run with a lot more power and authority than did Willis.

I think that a few games on the bench might be just what the doctor ordered for "the best RB in the NFL."

I think it might be time to stop drafting UM players.

    769139

Joe, I am not a fan of McGahee's attitide but unless Willis is really hurt bad I think you stick with him. I think he can make more big plays and is a back that usually gets better as the game goes on. From my vantage point the Bills OL got mauled in the second half ... starting from the failed 4th and 1 and continuing for the rest of the game. They just did not run block or pass block very well. It is imperative that McNally and Fairchild look at the film and find out what NE did in the second half. Hopefully is was not just getting beat man-on-man and is something we can correct with blocking schemes.

As for A-Train, he looked good and I would like to see him get more carries. Maybe he is the short yardage back we have been looking for?

Final note, the defensive player that blew up the 4th is 1 was Vince Wolfork. He penetrated deep and slowed the play up behind the line of scrimmage. I think he is from "the U" so I would not totally knock the UM players.

  19. Huh? It would have been first and goal from the 6 with a 17-7 lead. That was a win baby.

    769234

Yeah right. Keep drinking the Cool Aid.

They were worried about protecting a 10 point lead so the gambled a way a potential 13 point lead for a lower potential 17 point lead. Then they did not execute the 4th and 1. As most of you know, I was against the call, but so be it .. the coach showed some balls and set some expectations for his team.

After the failed 4th and 1 we were out gained by 205 yards to 5, outscored by 12-0, and we never even got another first down.

Lets look at how many points the Losman led Bills actually scored in the 2nd half last season. Then consider that we had the worst red zone offense and the 31st ranked offense in the league. 1st and goal from the 6 would have been great but still no garauntee that we score.

It amazes me that people think that we would have won had we scored that "potential" touchdown. :D
