Super Bowl I, I watched it on NBC because I liked the AFL better. I also remember watching the AFC Championship game that was played in the Rockpile on TV & seeing a sign that said "Bills in Super Bowl, Chiefs in soup bowl" Years later when I heard the revisionist history myth that the 1st Super Bowl wasn't called the Super Bowl I knew it was a lie because of the sign at the Rockpile. I looked it up in the library & sure enough, the papers were saying that the Chiefs had just earned a trip to the Super Bowl. All anyone has to do is go to a library & look up a paper on microfilm from 1967 & see everyone referring to the game as the Super Bowl.
I saw Super Bowl I and I pulled for the Chiefs because of the AFL tie. The game was refered to as the NFL-AFL Championship Game and it was shown on two television networks. I recall watching it on the AFL channel with Curt Gowdy doing the game. I think Lamar Hunt called it the "Super Bowl" back then but that name did not really catch on until SB III.

I still think the best National Anthem ever sung was by a NON-Drug addict Whitney Houston. Back when the Giants and Bills played.
It was kind of, unfortunately, she sang it in the studio and lip synched it live.

For what it is worth, here is my current thinking on how the Bills should tackle their offseason. I've based this plan on thinking about the 46 players who are on the typical active roster for gamedays (counting the special 3rd QB rule). I know its a little unusual to think about a roster in terms of the active players, rather than the full 53, but I think that its a more useful approach. I'll first list this year's 45 for each position, and then give my recommendations.
QB (3) - Losman, Holcomb, Nall
Recommendation: Losman is clearly the starter. Unless Levy and Jauron think that Nall is a total bust, now that Nall has had one year in our system, they can hopefully elevate him to #2, bid farewell to Holcomb, and draft a #3 on the second day of the draft.
RB (2) - McGahee, Thomas
Recommendation: I only give McGahee an extension if the price is right, he just hasn't shown enough as a complete back (pass catching and pass blocking). Even as a runner, he's disappear for far too long stretches for my taste. With that much talent, it wouldn't hurt to get an extension for the right price, but you can't break the bank for that kind of production either. Thomas is unrestricted, but the Bills should have no trouble resigning him. The Bills also may need to seriously consider reducing a player at another position in order to add a 3rd RB who plays special teams to the gameday roster for next season. If so, that could be a 2nd day pick, or perhaps even a 3rd rounder if the player was right.
FB (1) - Shelton
Recommendation: Daimon Shelton is 35 years old and a free agent; the Bills could tender him an offer to bring him back to camp, but this will be a priority for replacement. Ideally, I'd like to see the Bills use their 3rd round pick on a FB who would hopefully beat Shelton out in camp this year. Otherwise, the new guy may spend most of next year on the inactive list while Shelton plays one last year, or a different veteran is brought in to hold the fort.
WR (6) - Evans, Price, Reed, Parrish, Davis, Aiken
Recommendation: Davis is a free agent, who will certainly be resigned and at least brought into training camp. I was very impressed with him on special teams this year, and would like to see him back on the gameday rosters next year. If so, that would mean another year with 6 WR's on our gameday rosters - which I suspect that both Bobby April and our Mike Martz alumni offensive coordinator would both be more than happy with. The places to make a cut would be to drop either Reed or Price, but both received signing bonuses last year, and Price seems entrenched as a starter, and Reed seems to be finally emerging as the "3rd Down guy." That leaves three special teamers, Parrish as the returner and occasional "secret weapon" on offense, and Davis and Aiken as the gunners. I'd tag Aiken to possibly be a late cut and replaced by a 3rd RB or a backup FB (particularly if we project a first-day drafted rookie as our eventual starter, but just not on opening day.) On the other hand, I thought the same thing about Aiken this year, and he made the active roster anyways.
TE (3) - Royal, Cieslak, Everett
Recommendation: Royal is a coaches favorite, and I like Cieslak a lot, especially since he can be a backup FB. I suspect that Everett will be cut in training camp next season. Ideally, I would hope that the Bills use a 1st Day pick on a TE who will beat him out for the spot. Its conceivable that Neufeld could come back and take the spot too. We could bring in Eric Johnson from the 49ers or Reggie Kelly of the Bengals. Johnson graduated from Yale, so you've got to think that he might get a look from this staff....
OT (3) - Peters, Pennington, Butler
Recommendation: This young trio appears to be set. Butler should see some competition, from a mid-round draft pick or a lower-tier free agent, with Butler being demoted to the inactive list for one more year of development in that situation if he should lose out.
OG/C (4) - Gandy, Fowler, Vilarrial, Preston
Recommendation: Gandy is a free agent, whom I don't expect to resign. Or if we do, to be cut in camp. Vilarrial could retire with injuries, and Reyes, who began the year on the above list, I would expect to be cut. Preston is a restricted free agent who should be brought back. I'd then look to sign free agent at the interior of the line. One place I'd start would be David Diehl of the Giants, whom I believe is a free agent. McNally drafted him in his last year in New York, and while he's not great, he would probably be an instant starter for us. Next year's four at this position would then likely be:
Diehl, Fowler, Preston, Merz - although Merz should face competition for an active roster spot.
DE (4) - Schobel, Kelsay, Denney, Hargrove
Recommendation: Kelsay is a free agent, and I'd put signing him only behind Clements. If there is a pass rusher available in the first round, I'd probably take him though, which would complicate this scenario - but otherwise I'd plan on resigning Kelsay and standing pat.
DT (3) - Triplett, Williams, Anderson
I expect Anderson to be cut and replaced by McCargo in the rotation. Jason Jefferson might come back on the inactive list, or a late-round draft pick could take his spot.
LB (7) - Crowell, Fletcher, Spikes, Ellison, Haggan, DiGiorgio, Stamer
Fletcher is a free agent, and its open secret that he won't be resigned. Its time to get younger and bigger in the middle, and with the need to resign Clements (or else sign his replacement), as well as Kelsay, there simply isn't money to go around. Spikes was a shadow of his former self this season, but I bring him back for another year to try and fully recover from his injuries and retgain his former glory. Coy Wire is a free agent, but I think we should be able to bring him back cheaply, and I expect will take either Haggan's or Stamer's roster spot as a special teams linebacker. DiGiorgio seems to have earned an active roster spot as a special teamer as well, and Ellison will remain the top backup. With our first round pick, I would draft Paul Posluszny of Penn State. With Fletcher moving on, we'll have a glaring need for a middle linebacker, and Posluszny would seem to be the sort of high character, big time player who could fit right in.
CB (4) - Clements, McGee, Thomas, Greer
This is where Marv will earn his bucks the big season. I advocate making Clements the highest paid CB in football after the season that he just had - he's that valuable to us. If we let Clements walk, then we need to sign Asante Samuel - otherwise we'll be in trouble and things will start falling apart. Kiwaukee Thomas is unrestricted and Greer is restricted. Greer will be tendered, and Thomas could probably be brought back for camp. Ideally, Yobouty will claim the nickel CB slot this year in camp, and then a second day pick or UDFA could beat out Greer for the gameday roster spot.
S (3) - Whitner, Simpson, Leonhard
Whitner and Simpson ain't going anywhere next year. I'd love to see Leonhard continue to defy the odds and keep earning his active roster spot with special teams play and an awful lot of heart.
Specialists (3) - Moorman, Lindell, Schenk
With Lindell resigned, there's no worries here.
Summary:
Free Agency -
Resign Clements, Kelsay, Thomas, and Davis. Bring in an interior offensive lineman, ala David Diehl. Look for lower-tier help at FB, TE, and backup offensive line.
Draft -
First Day - LB, TE, FB
Second Day - RB, CB, OL, CB
I can't say I completely agree.
I think we have to improve our ability to run and stop the run. We need to make a splash in free aganecy and get a help at DT and at OG. After that a LB to replace Fletcher would be very nice. If we lose Clements then a CB is needed. Lower Tier FA help should be looked at for FB. Obviously we cannot and will not get a top free agent player in all postions so that is where the draft will come in to supplement. It best to draft by talent and not solely by position. The more we can fill needs with free agancy the better I will feel about the draft.

What's the prevailing feeling among you tards?
I think the Defense is actually WORSE than the offense. No tackling. Poor schemes. Lack of LB talent.
Considering all the picks Marv wasted on the D, it sure doesn't look much better.
What a sickening loss that was. Yet again, everything's falling into place and the team chokes like Paris Hilton after a night of coke-induced whoring.
??? tards?
Check the stats and you will find that the defense has improve quite a bit from last year. Still a ways to go but on the right track.
I don't think they choked. They played hard and had a shot to win it. The Titans made some big plays, the Bills needed to make few more plays but did not do it.

1) It is hard to believe just how in tune many TSW posters are with our football team. Major Kudos to whoever called for a running play to Josh Reed.
2) I am not one to focus too much on, nor gush over quarterbacks. That said, JP played his ass off, and left this cynical poster completely impressed.
3) I am trying to put into perspective JUST how good Jason Peters is. I wouldn't accept anything less for him in a trade than the #1 pick in the 07 draft. I would only accept this because Badolbilz told me there is a kid coming out of college who is an absolute super talent, with a chance to be an all-time great. Am I getting my point accross?
4) There were 7 minutes and 35 seconds left in the 2nd quarter when I realized that the titans suck. Not sure how this is relevant.
5) You saw it yourself people. Fowler is a little light in the ass.
6) Talk about a game changing play? The 2nd quarter holding penalty by Gandy hurt us BIG FRIGGIN TIME! It cost us points and momentum. Imo, he is a backup OT and nothing more. We simply must fix this problem in the offseason. I for one couldn't care less if Gandy walks. Sorry about that.
7) Announcers don't generally phase me, and I consider #89 a dear friend. This is why I am not going to say horrible things about Steve Tasker. Cindy knows him and says he is a good guy. Merry Christmas Cindy!
8) I have been generally complimentary toward Tripplett. Yesterday, he was so bad that I wanted to cry. I held back because it would have looked bad in front of my wife and 3 daughters.
9) I put none of the blame for this loss on our DEs. They can't be expected to play DE and DT at the same time. I hope we keep Kelsay. There is much hope for Kyle Williams at DT, or so I see it.
10) We need Nate, not a first round replacement.
11) I am not angry. The Bills accomplished more than we had a right to expect imo. We got very lucky with some TD acquisitions (Evans, Losman and Peters to name a few) and some late round picks by Marv. When the smoke clears, this team will have a chance to be very good. We can all see the needs.....OGs, DTs, and young LBs. These are NOT the toughest positions to fill. In any event, I live every day proud of being a part of the Buffalo Bills community.
12) Merry Christmas to all of you and your loved ones, and may God bless.
BfNYC
1). Reed was a good signing by Marv.
2). JP made great strides this season and hopefully he is competitive next week against a great defense.
3). Peters is good and we can build around him.
4). ? The Titans are up and coming imo.
5). Fowler is ok, not a stud.
6). All linemen get caught holding. Gandy looks like a decent starting gaurd and an excellent reserve for OT/OG. In think we should re-sign him.
7). ok
8). Triplett is ok, more of a pass rusher. We need help at DT.
9). defense is played as a team game.
10). agreed
11). true.
12). thanks, same to you.

So warming up on the sidleine, kicking inot a into a net that is 3 yards away is relevant?
Wind is wind but Ok. Maybe somebody else will answer your question.
-
-
I was not there but you saw the problems the Titans had just punting into that wind in the 3rd quarter.
I am left wondering why we passed on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th down? I wonder if the 3rd and 4th down plays were intended to go that deep? Seems like shorter, higher percentage passes, would be better in that weather.
Hard to say.

He's never forgiven Levy for showing him the door after his diarrhea-of-the-mouth before the Redskins SB became MessageBoard fodder for the Skins and the Hogettes beat the crap out of his D.
Levy was completely unglued at halftime screaming to the back judge "You've been bought! I say, you've been bought!"
Charming moments like that don't come without consequences for the dog of the house, and Coach Chuckie made himself the curr of the franchise that week.
He may know football, but he's an ass. He should go somewhere else with his hard-on.
One would believe that if he did indeed know football that well that he would have been coaching somewhere else in the NFL. He has been doing the same tired radio bit for too many years. He is not at all entertaining or informative, He is a has been. They should change his shows name to "the once upon a time coach".
Bottom line is this: Levy is in the HoF and employed as a GM. Dickerson is nothing.

I agree with Promo. Enjoy it while it lasts.
I will see the Sabres in St. Louis on Saturday and they usually lose when the come here. The Blues are bad but looking for their first win under a new coach. I hope to see a Sabres win, followed by a Bills win on Saturday.

A karma thing that is working against us is Travis Henry. His favorite team growing up in Florida drafts him, he makes the Pro Bowl in his 2nd year, and then gets traded away after we select a stud RB out of Miami.
T-Hen will be playing some inspired ball and I think it may hurt us considering the way our Run-D has been playing.
Sorry, I just don't see T-Hen rising to the ocassion.

Much has been made of the reworked offensive line and the effect it has had on Losman and the offense, but I don't think people realize exactly how much of an effect the new line has really had.
In the 7 games before the bye week the Bills gave up 21 sacks.
Willis McGahee ran 150 times for 564 yards and 3.76 YPC.
In the 7 games since the bye week the Bills have given up 20 sacks.
Willis McGahee has run 76 times for 308 yards and 4.0 YPC.
I have to say...Im not impressed, and despite the general opinion that this line has been playing much better than any line the Bills have had in years (it doesnt take much does it?) Jason Peters will be the anchor of this line for many years to come, and by all accounts Pennington has looked very good at RT, but the offensive line must be a priority this offseason for Marv and co, and that means not waiting until the second day to select offensive linemen.
Your not impressed? Then watch the games.
The sacks may be the same but Losman has much more time, he has room to step up, he is comfortable. The blocking is better and now we are getting the TE's into the play.
The first 7 games he was running for his life; sack or no sack. Stats don't tell the whole story.
I agree that there is room to improve but they are far better since the bye week changes.
-
I think its good. Think about it: this team started 2-5, and then at the bye week alot of things changed. Specifically Losman was unleashed and allowed to play to his full potential and 4 positions on the O-line saw new starters. Since then, we're 5-2! Doesn't that 5-2 record since the changes mean that the team in the state it is now is already a legitimate contender? Add to that we'll have more experience for guys like Kyle Williams, JP Losman, Whitner, Simpson, Ellison, Pennington, etc. And we get McCargo back.
The team the way it is right now should be competing for the division title next year. We should use the draft to improve a couple of weak positions. Other than that, we should use available cap space to try to re-sign our own players...bring back Fletcher, Clements, Kelsay and Gandy.
Just use our resources to keep this team together for our run next year.
I agree. I would like to see sign Clements, Fletcher, Kelsay and Gandy. Signing our players should be a priority. After that maybe we will have a few $$ to add some more talent via free agency ... I am no cap man.
-
I am still giggling. I knew when he would run the reverse (worst time)
I just love those trick plays.
Do you think his kids are being tweated mean now? Probably more like stabbed at school. (Miami makes us look like angels)
such a loser. Even Bills players know he quitted on our team.
I watched the game in a sports bar and laughed every time I heard the Miami fans complain about the playcalling. Thanks Meathead.

it seems before this season started alot of posters were concerned that replacing eric moulds with lee evans was going to be a "big mistake"well not only does lee have over a thousand yards and 6 td's now.eric has 1 td and like 546 yards.i think marv did a awesome job at ridding this team of the malcontents and non team players.this team seems to jell and become more of a team each week.i hope marv gets a gm of the year award.we had a good draft, changed the atmosphere of the team and who knows what will be in store for year #2 under marvs watch?imagine if the season was starting today with the current team in place...wow....oh well go bills in06 and 07 lol
Moulds problems were due to his relationship with Meathead Mularkey.
Marv wanted to keep him, remember?
-
Gone! You must be out of your mind.
Nothing has changed.
Wow! Hitting wide open receivers! Let's put Loseman in the HOF. Please
I'm suposed to get excited because the QB didn't lose the game for the Bills? I guess that's the standard.
The Bills are playing well because the Defense and the Special Teams have made up for Loseman's mistakes. Instead of letting yet another Loseman fumble cost the Bills the game like it has all year. The Defense has stepped up.
And how good does Tom Donahoe look. For all the whining you ladies do about about TD?
Jason Peters has looked great.
Lee Evans is showing he is a #1 WR.
Aaron Schoeble is heading to the Pro-Bowl. Or at least should.
McGahee is running with heart.
Nate Clements is finally looking like "The Play Maker" he claims to be.
If he could have only gotten something done at the QB position he may still be the GM.
he did ... he drafted Losman.
-
-
Not bad for starters but FB would be Cookie G, followed by Braxton.
-
I am not saying AJ Smith is a bad talent evaluator. But look at the circumstance under which they are drafting....Bob refuses to look at what was handed to them. Again I am not saying it is their fault for being given such a freebie.
Cowher and his personnel have unearthed talented players from the lower rounds. The chargers on the other hand, thanks to the draft day trades have drafted excellent players from the first few rounds, but their later rounds are still average like most other NFL teams.
I do look at what was "handed" to them ... three teams passed on LT and they had him targeted on their guy. I cannot punish them for knowing that LT could be the best player in the league someday and then postioing themselves to take him. This move was unpopular because everyone was in love with Vick, but they made the absolute right move.
The Eli Manning move was another great one and they cashed in big. Nothing is handed to anybody in the draft. That is why you are praising Pittsburgh, they have found excellent players in the lower rounds.
-
Let us not have revisionist history here. The Chargers needed a starting RB and LT fell in their laps due to necessity for Arizona and Atlanta and stupidity in Cleveland.
If you get to pick #1 in 2 drafts in 3 years, how is that they built a great team.
And again as I posted earlier, the chargers were so lucky in both of those drafts to be able to trade down a few notches below and get addiitonal draft picks and still get the player they wanted.
I will any day take Bill Cowher in talent evaluation over most of the personnel men in the NFL.
yeah right, give them no credit.
What a disaster

Well lets see. We did not create the hole at RB. We proactively adjusted to the situation. Willis was not going to play for us. We had no choice but get rid of him. He does not want to be a Buffalo Bill. I am please to get the picks we did.
We have 4 day one draft picks and i think we will adress CB, LB, and RB at a minimum.
DT - we need some help but lets not forget that McCargo, Williams, and Tripplett will be back. Still an area of need but we have a first rounder here already in McCargo. Hopefully he develops next season.
CB - We will address this in the draft and probably in free agency. One can hope that Youbouty develops.
WR - We could use a better #2 but we are probably ok for now.
LB - Definitely need to address this in the draft.
QB - We are set with Losman. I expect that he will get even better with the OL improvements.
RB - Expect that we draft a RB on day one of the draft and that we sign A-train or another free agent. Sound like we will play 2 running backs ... like most teams.
