Beane gets a pass for one reason: Josh Allen. It was a brilliant move. With the Josh Allen move included he is an above average GM. Remove the Josh Allen move, and he is a fairly average GM.

There’s really only 1 FA left now that can be considered an impact player. The Bills should sign him post June 1.
They’re going to need impact player(s) in the draft. They have a hard time finding them.
We are only four seasons away from asking "will we miss the departed players?"

Change any five players other than Allen on the Bills, and replace them with Jags. Bills still win the division in 2024
Change the GM and the Bills still win the division 2024Change the entire coaching staff and the Bills still win the division in 2024.
So we won't miss any of the departed players.
But there is little evidence to expect Beane is going to replace them with players we would miss, if they left, either. Bills feel like they have been spinning their wheels for a while. Top 2 QB. Very weak division. Its a pretty good formula for winning the division. And only narrow-minded people think that is not good enough. Or so I have heard. -

You can always count on Bill Belichick to make a head scratcher.
Though, that may not be the case for 2024. He has a high pick and the QB that NE desperately needs will be there.
Plus Belichek is no longer with the Patriots. So there is that.

there's no way I'd give up 5 potential starting players for a top prospect at any position unless it was QB. I'd much rather we just draft 5 WRs and take our shot that one or more of them are good. It's not like top prospects are a sure thing. They bust all the time.
I don’t always agree with you. But this post is correct.

I just imagined it 😎28, 60, 2025 1st, 2nd, 2nd for #4
expensive yes. Worth it? Very good chance
board meltdown? 100%
I do think there’s a much better chance we go after Nabers
he’s possibly there at #6
Josh said his name 1st
Schoen owes Beane a slight discount
this of course assumes the Giants don’t want him and are willing to trade down
(who knows!)
It seems clear 2024 is not the target year for the championship. Massive turnover on defense, complete makeover of the WR room, new DC, first full year for an OC, Dline overhaul, no reason to expect Miller or Milano to return to form in 2024. Trading all of that draft capital for 2024 seems to make little sense. The more obvious answer seems to be building up the 2025 draft capital to make a move next year.

Whatever, we can be sure that Beane is doing some creative thinking.
Us old guys don't want to accept, that it is all prepping for 2025, and that 2024 is a "whatever Josh can do" season. Building excltement for PSL sales for the new stadium.

Maybe in 1982, in 2024 modern professional organizations often consult superstars in personnel decisions. As for the role of professional athletes...that is changing in a lot of ways, hell top athletes are more powerful than ever. Josh might have wanted to be at arm's length of the process to protect his position, but I'm sure he was involved.
Unless you were in the room, you are only speculating

Since the Bills are a professional football organization, it is almost certain Allen was not involved in the decision. Since Allen is a professional athlete, he certainly understands it is part of the game.

It's been said a few times in here, but future year picks value are reduced by one round. No one knows where a team will pick next year, so the value is typically guessed to be similar to the current draft. So the Bills Round 1 pick in 2025 would be worth the same value as their 2024 Round 2 pick. Could the Bills finish much worse next year and the pick be worth more, possibly. But that can't be known at this time.
The standard draft chart considers a first rounder in the next year at 1000. Because no one knows in where it lands in the first round. Even the 32 pick one year out is worth more than 300.

AFC East is weak. Josh Allen is great. Rest of the pieces will likely place the ceiling at winning the division and losing the divisional round playoff game.

Its the perfect way to lower expectations for GM/Coaching. Only narrow minded people have higher expectations.

Diggs cost a 1st (and change) to acquire.
His cost has been $19.5M per year for 4 years AAV.
Now Beane gets a 2nd back.
Diggs did his job but he is not worth pushing $30M a year for future years.
If I look at it that way, it's a wash and time for someone younger to take it farther.
Everything has it's time and Beane no doubt thoughts it's now.
Diggs was my second favorite Bill. From a pure asset management stand point maybe this was a right move (although we did not get a second back, we got a second minus a fifth and minus a sixth back) And the one given up was an earlier pick than the second is likely to be even round adjusted. But again, maybe the correct assett management decision. But its hard to see the Bills being better in 2024 than they were in the last couple of years. Given the personnel turnover on the Defense and coaching, plus this, it seems as though we are giving Beane/McDermott basically a complete second rebuild shot

I don't feel like the window is closing at all in the upcoming season. It's as wide open as it was last September, before all of the injuries hit.
The Bills are a pretty young team. Whenever I hear an opposing fan say we're getting older, I think it's because of Hyde, Poyer & Miller. If you look at the rest of the team, it's pretty dominated by guys in their 20's, and many who were just drafted in the past few years.
If Beane can put together another very good draft, we should be in the top tier again this coming season. And that is repeatable. This has always been a team that Allen basically carries for a large part of the time. As long as he is surrounded by solid, capable players, with a few star-quality guys in the mix, we can beat anyone.
Except for the old guys we are young every year.

Can the heading of the thread be updated to be accurate: "Diggs and picks traded to Texans for second round pick" ?
Just now, Beck Water said:There are also positions where historically, his track record is more mixed - like WR.
Mixed is charitiable. But I think Beane is better than you give him credit for. Davis and Diggs 2024 performances might illustrate one way or the the other.

With the 19th pick in the 2024 TSW Mock Draft 1.0, the Los Angeles Rams select:
Jer'Zhan Newton, Defensive Tackle, Illinois.
The Pittsburgh Steelers and @julian are now on the clock.
I'd have taken Latu if he reached this spot and I'd have considered Fautanu too. But I think the guys who can start early at left tackle are gone and there are no other edge rushers worth the pick. So I round back to their need to replace Aaron Donald and it just happens to coincide with the value on the board. Newton is personally my highest graded defensive player and I like his fit in the Rams odd front defense. In his final two years with the Fighting Illini he registered 13 sacks and 22.5 tackles for loss. He is a monster who lives in the backfield and terrorised Big Ten Offensive Lines.
In real life, we should expect the Bills to trade this years first and next years two second round picks to trade with the Rams to get this star DT.

Bold 2024 prediction: Bills face Texans in the divisonal round of the playoffs. Josh Allen single handedly brings the team back twice from Q4 deficits. However the second time in the quarter he puts the Bills ahead by 6, he scored too fast, leaving a full minute on the clock. Texans come back to win on the last series with a Stroud to Diggs TD pass. We will have a long discussion how Brady and Allen need to learn to milk the clock to the last play of the game, because we can't expect the defense to hold any sort of lead in Q4 of a playoff game.
