I don't know. But I really hope he works hard this offseason. I feel like Josh being dialled in is the difference between this team being in a lot of one score games and us winning more comfortably.

How is it possible to disagree with “my understanding “. Separately double check your sarcasm detection system

Ask yourself what McDermott does to be a better HC? He is the sole reason Allen is not a SuperBowl champion.

Allen is the only reason the Bills are competitive.

Replace McDermott with any HC and this team still wins the division.

My understanding is that any other head coach means entering a 20 year playoff drought, with or without Josh Allen.

  3. Its not clear what the most clownish part of this thread is.  Here are the nominees:

    1. Anyone posting in this thread knows what the optimal off-season workout for Josh Allen
    2. Anyone posting in this thread knows what Josh Allen's actual off-season workouts actually consist of.
    3. Despite not know 1 or 2 above, being certain Allen isn't working hard enough
    4. Somehow the Bills playoff failures are connected to Allen not working hard enough in the off-season,

That's kind of like saying on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the worst, Haack is a 2 and Martin is a 3 and it's not a log scale either.  All I remember last season was all the complaints about what a poor punter Martin was.

    Together they could be five.

The "facts" you are using don't support your argument. That's the problem. You're trying to say that because they invested in players, that should prove that the strategy is flawed. No one is denying that they've made investments. How many of those players have been playing like all-pros? How many of those players make huge plays that one time you need them to int he playoffs? Certainly not enough of them and I'd argue none of them.

Looking at their top 100 picks over the last few years, you'll find few players who are game changers.

    2023:
    Dorian Williams (non-factor thus far)

    2022:
    Kaiir Elam (Bust)
Terell Bernard (looks good year 2 but too early to say if he'll be a playoff factor due to injury)

    2021:
    Greg Rousseau (non-impact starter)
    Boogie Basham (Bust)

    2020:
AJ Epenesa (terrible for two seasons and then good not great for two. Rotational player)

    2019:
Ed Oliver (Underachieved most of his career until 2022 season. Non-factor against KC)

    Notable Recent Free Agent signings/Trades
Rasul Douglas (Looked like a beast until the KC game, but was injured and clearly hampered)
Von Miller (has been ineffeective/unavailable the last year and a half since injury)
Leonard Floyd (Early season beast with 10.5 sacks but only 1 in his final 8 games. Non factor in the playoffs)

We Don't have a Chris Jones, Lararius Sneed, or even a George Karlaftis on this team that are there to make the play you need to have. With a healthy Douglas and Milano maybe we aren't that far away but we probably still need a game-wrecker that's better than all of them if you ever hope to stop Mahomes when it matters.

The investments that they've made on offense to surround Allen have borne far more fruit:
Diggs (top 10+ player every year of his buffalo career. Top 5 prior to this season)
Cook (Top 10 weapon out of the backfield)
Kincaid (could be a top 5 TE by the end of next season)
Gabe Davis (limited player with inconsistencies but still put up big numbers. We needed to upgrade here and we already have)
Khalil Shakir (Sophmore season would have been called a breakout if he had more targets.

On Affense you have 3 legitimate game breakers in Allen, Diggs, and Cook with Kincaid a high chance to be a 4th and Shakir possibly a step below that. I don't know what you want. I won't turn my nose up at one more weapon, but realistically that's all there's room for there.

On defense we can can conceivably upgrade at nearly every position. Now they probably won't try to go and get a Chris Jones or a Fred Warner, or even a  Lajarius Sneed, but all of those guys would make our team better than they are right now in a possibly meaningful way. If you can find one guy in the draft that can shut down Kelce, maybe that's all that's missing. If you can find one DL that can bring the extra juice to force Mahomes into a bad decision on 3rd down, maybe that's enough.

If you're resigning yourself to "well mahomes is always going to score", then you're already resigning yourself to losing, because Allen isn't that level that's going to score every single time either. He can do it once in a while, like we saw in 13 seconds, and then we still lose because our defense can't stop Mahomes. The math on that looks terrible. KC wins every time Josh doesn't go perfect and they also win every time Josh does go perfect but KC goes last.

I already made the point earlier that you casually ignored, but no amount of open receivers against KC completes the 3rd down pass that Josh didn't make that ended the game for us. Even bigger than that, is no amount of WR help there would prevent Mahomes from marching down the field and scoring again (as you are agreeing with me here that he would do) had Josh completed that pass. The right play there was throwing to a wide open Diggs for a first down, running out the clock and scoring without giving KC a chance to win. But that's not how we roll, and until we do, expect the same results.

    Allen is that level.

His role is much more difficult to fill than you make it out to be. He's basically playing hybrid LB/CB depending on the play call. He's constantly put in vulnerable situations because McDermott knows he can handle it. Once you remove him, you get the same problem we got when Tre White went down - McDermott has to compromise other parts of his defense to cover the area that the missing player is usually covering.

I stand by my earlier comment.

Under the circumstances the Bills have had a top 5 off season so far.  They re-signed the two guys from the team they had to;  they added a high quality offensive weapon, they solidified their coaching ranks; they got their CAP under control and basically Belichecked several players who were on the downward trajectory of their careers.

Everything bolded does not improve the team.

  8. I never find comparing the 2024 Bills roster to the 2023 Bills roster or the 2019 Bills roster as interesting because the 2024 Bills will never play a previous version of the Bills.  I don't pay attention to every free agency move, so I don't have an opinion (which is odd because I usually have an opinion on everything) who has improved their team the most with the combination of coaching changes, player cuts and player signings.  (ordinary administrative moves like restructurings or extensions, may create the ability to improve a roster, but the don't actually change the roster in and of themselves, so I don't consider them needle movers. )

So far the only move that jumped out as me as maybe be missing piece to allow a team to advance further was the Raven's signing of Derrick Henry.  But I have no idea what else the have done.

Who does everyone think has done the best for themselves?

  9. Bills will make the playoffs.  You can bank on that.  Will the dline show up in the playoffs when it matters? who knows; Will players drop multiple catchable passes in the playoffs when it matters? who knows. Will special teams blunder at an inopportune moment in the playoffs? who knows. Will a coaching blunder ***** defeat from the jaws of victory in the playoffs? who knows.

We really need to get "who" in here to tell us what the future holds for the 2024 season.

Reid didn't win a SB till he got to his 2nd head coaching job, and after 13 years HC experience in Philly

I'm confident McDermott can do that to.

He won the superbowl shortly after getting his first superstar qb.  So you kind of miss that the point of the discussion.  How many Super Bowls do you think McDermott wins with Baker Mayfield or Kirk Cousins as his QB ?

Ed Oliver is top 10 and he is closer to 5 than 10. After Allen (and finger crossed Milano) the next two closest to elite are Oliver and Taron unless Stef gets back to his best.

I think Elite is more measured as 150 players in the league in terms of impact. Going by position would imply having the leagues best center and 15th best wr is as valuable as having the best wr and 15th best center.   And some players transcend positional value. McCafferty is an elite player at a position

Thuney is 100% elite. There is no question about that. Then I think McDuffie (as a slot) and Humphrey at center have a shout too.

    They also have elite coaching

No rational GM is trading for Mack, so it's "fate" that he should come back to Buffalo to win a SB.

Mack is 33 and has made over $150M.  If I was Mack, I would do it on the cheap.

Bills have gone out in the divisional round the last couple of seasons. The core of the defense cut over hill and was cut.  Von Miller and Matt Milano are both coming back from serious injuries.  If you were Mack, it is not obvious that the Bills are the team most obvious to get to the super bowl.

The NFL will not disclose their formula. Overthecap seemed to have it nailed down, but not on that pick. Edmunds missed some time this season and playing time factors into the formula. Total speculation on my part, but that may have been it. He was calculated as giving us the lowest 3rd round comp pick - other than the ones given to teams that have minority GMs and HCs hired away.

Edmunds found another way to screw the Bills. ☹️

Agreed. The days are gone for spending money on special teams and d line rotations. It a barbell of 5-7 exceptional players, not a lot of very good in the middle and then cheap raw talent at the bottom to balance the cap.

We tried to go th very good with a few difference makers and it hasn't worked.

I am no great defender of Beane.  But I doubt he disagrees with your barbell assessment.  The problem is the Bells all broke.  Going into 2023, we were supposed to have the elite safety tandem in the entire NFL, Von Miller and Matt Milano on Defense and Allen, Diggs, and Knox on offense. There is your 7.  Knox lost his brother, White didn't make it back and Hyde and Miller went down, and that was the end of having 7 elite players.  Its not particularly simple to restock 3 to 4 elite players every year.

  15. 2 minutes ago, BarleyNY said:

He’s certainly a better receiver than Knox, but he hasn’t learned to be an effective blocker yet. That limits his usefulness to the slot while Knox can play in-line. Until Kincaid develops as a blocker those two play different positions, even if they’re both labeled TEs.

Hope this clears things up for the confused.  I am not going to do the research, but I am guessing Knox is the highest paid TE2 in the NFL.
