Yes, it is. That was an incredibly coached game by McDermott and his staff even though the end was a disaster. Nobody wants to look at the game in its totality because if they did, they’d have to acknowledge that Kansas City dominated that game. Buffalo nearly stole a game they had no business winning because of their aggressive coaching that kept coming up aces. The Bills went for it on 4th down 4 times. They were 4/4 with 3 TDs. Because of how it ended, everyone seems to think of that game as one that the Bills should have won. That’s true in a way, but it’s also true that they were either tied or trailing for 59 minutes. The better team won that game. If Butker misses that FG at the end of regulation (and he’d already missed an XP), that would be looked at as nearly a perfect game from a coaching standpoint. People only remember the outcome, though. Such is sports.

Allen’s OC until this season was the guy who just won COTY his first season as a head coach. That’s about as good of a coaching situation as you can possibly have.

They why did they wait until pick 7? They had enough ammo to move up way higher, but they let 6 players and 2 QBs get picked before they moved up. Beane basically won a coin toss by choosing the best QB out of the two left. He gets TONS of credit for getting the biggest decision in sports right, but he’s shot blanks in the draft for 4 seasons since then, and no amount of choosing the right QB changes that fact. Last year’s draft should have opened a lot of eyes, but everyone wanted to hand waive it away. Buffalo needed a CB and everyone knew it. Kansas City jumped them and took McDuffie who was an elite prospect that slid beyond where he should have. The apologists want to say that Beane never would’ve drafted him because of stupid reasons like his arms being a fraction of an inch too short or whatever. (If that’s true, then it’s an even bigger inditement against Beane’s evaluations, but that’s a different conversation). Even if it’s true that Elam was the target all along and he winds up being the superior player, it doesn’t change the fact that Beane allowed the Chiefs the opportunity to steal their guy. Beane was willing to trade up to 23 after KC jumped them but not to 20 proactively? That’s ridiculous on its face. What if Kansas City had taken Elam? The same argument holds true. Beane allowed his biggest nemesis to dictate who he was allowed to pick in the first round when the cost to prevent it was the difference between trading up to 20 versus 23. Maybe the homers are right and Beane would never have targeted McDuffie. Andy Reid and Brett Veach identified their guy, identified Buffalo as a viable threat, and made the move to jump them in order to get their guy. That was a bad look for Beane, and the look on his face in the video from the war room when the trade was announced said it all. The absolute best case scenario is that Beane got lucky that Kansas City didn’t take the guy he wanted. Credit to Beane for trading up and not risking getting jumped again, but he shouldn’t have been caught with his pants down in the first place.

Von was 24 years old last time. 34 year old bodies don't tend to recover quite as quickly. That's not to say he can't do it again, but there's certainly no guarantee that he will either.

He may never be an elite player, but he’s pretty solid and certainly the least of Buffalo’s problems looking to the future. Young guys very rarely put up big sack numbers. If you look at last year’s draft, only 3 players had more than 4 sacks and one of the is 24 years old. GR may wind up being a top 5 sack guy out of the past two draft classes by the time it’s all said and done.

This makes no sense to me. Beane has already established that he can draft all the roster-filler he needs whether it’s in the second round or the sixth. Wouldn’t it be better for him to move up in the draft and target someone he thinks is going to be elite? All the cap money has already been pushed in. Might as well take some huge swings in the draft. Go get the next superstar WR to pair with Diggs. There’s a really strong chance this team is a tear down in a season or two, especially if Miller and White don’t return to form. Adding a few more Spencer Browns, Boogie Bashams, and Gabe Davises aren’t going to make the Bills leapfrog the Bengals. A Tyreek Hill or Justin Jefferson might, though.

Yeah, Von’s is exactly the type of contract you can’t restructure. He was an all-in play. Also, Oliver is guaranteed nearly $11m in 2023. Why would he sign a 3 year extension that only guaranteed him another $7m? Seems like he’d be much better off hitting free agency.

Serviceable Guards grow on trees. If you’re targeting an all-pro caliber player in FA, that’s one thing, but there’s simply no excuse for having to pay $8-$10 million for a JAG. There are 10 guys out there right now waiting to be drafted on day 3 who can provide a similar level of play. When you’re up against the cap, you’d better be able to find those guys. Beane’s been successful throwing money at problems for the past 4 years, but that money is running out quickly. He’s got to start stacking wins in the draft immediately, or there’s going to be one hell of a mess to clean up in 2024.

How do you commit $25+ million a year to two LBers who don't rush the QB? That's a huge chunk of money to what amounts to arguably the least impactful defensive positions.

I think you could make a case that there were more elite QBs then than now. Brady, Manning, Ben, Favre/Rodgers, Mahomes, Brees, Rivers, etc. There are 3 right now.

Barkley had 352 touches his rookie season and then got hurt the following year. He had 352 touches last season. The guy is a sports car that the previous owner drove like a maniac for 5 years and had one major wreck. I don't understand why anyone would throw big money at him when quality RBs grow on trees.

DS is mediocre, but he's light years ahead of Cook. Cook runs like he's in mud. He's just got zero acceleration. There was a play against the Bengals where the right edge was sealed beautifully and it looked like a big play, but it took Cook forever to get to the edge and he got buried for a two yard gain. Both RBs have inflated YPC numbers because Josh gets the short yardage carries. Those numbers are fool's gold.

In the draft threads, posters were swearing up and down that Beane would NEVER have taken McDuffie due to his arms being slightly shorter than some arbitrary length. If that’s true, it’s a huge inditement of Beane. McDuffie was a day 1 starter and jumped off the screen the moment he stepped on the field. He had no business falling as far as he did.
