  1. Honestly if he was not already a Bill this would be like a Mario Addison or Quinten Jefferson type signing. Makes a play here or there but really does not add a ton more than a rookie or guy like Kingsley Jonathon. The Bills just like to stick with the familiar and are willing to pay a premium for it. Not a huge deal at $3M, but again when you shell out 5-10 $3M deal you lose the chance to get a $10M player in exchange for a few of those $3M guys being replaced by min salaries. Their style has proven to be get a lot of mid level talent rather than upper level talent mixed with rookies. It makes sense they can win in the regular season because you get a lot of consistency (plus Josh Allen doesnt hurt) but are lacking in star power come playoff time.

Seems like a smart idea to me.

But if something comes up, can the Bills restructure it agin this off season?

Don’t think they can do anything again this year. But could be wrong.

And what you don’t spend this year can be carried over. It makes no difference. Basically by not taking all of it tells me there’s a self imposed cash limit set by the owner. In other words the owner isn’t a blank check this year.

That is my thought as well. Energy is down…

Mr inconsistent is back.  I know some fans love him,but I don't get why other then we drafted him.

How it works. If he did not resign not many would love him, it would be he was not worth keeping.

  5. These deals kill me. We are so willing to waste a million here and there that could add up to a $10M difference maker. This role that Cam Lewis plays could be a rookie or min level contract. McD is stuck on keeping the familiar with all these guys.

Are you expecting starting caliber talent at your 5th option at CB or backup safety?

No I am expecting a rookie or similar value contract. Let Lewis walk.

We'll definitely get a guy as insurance in FA and/or Draft someone in the mid Rounds. I think AJ coming back is way more likely now that Von did what he did.

But I don't see any way we're going to go out and get a Superstar that guarantees Von won't reach the incentives he conceded to and guarantees he has no chance of earning his job back.

Without a pass rush we have no chance on d. May as well go all in on o and not waste any money on d.

Yes, there's a rotation. But there's a big difference between being the starter and coming off the bench in terms of reps.

Khalil Mack would unequivocally move Von to rotational. AJ Epenesa got the highest number of snaps last season outside of Groot and Floyd, our starters. He saw the field 36% of the time.

This would be Von's ceiling with a Mack signing. No way he agreed to hand over that money and turn it all incentives on the pretense that he would use that money to completely replace him without even a chance to show last season was a mirage and make it so that he only has 36% or less of the snaps to earn the incentives.

AJ Epenesa - I can see that. A guy who can step in and take on more reps if Miller doesn't work out without completely closing the door on him Starting like a Mack would.

Hopefully Beane and McD arent betting on Von Miller being the primary contributor in the pass rush. The way he looked you have to have another plan and hope he can at least contribute something not plan on him being the guy.

I just want us to be more willing to let rookies take on roles. Save the cap space for difference makers. My issue with a contract like this is Rapp is basically guaranteed a spot on the roster - it costs slightly more to cut him than to keep him in 2024. Before the offseason really starts we are already deciding his role is too valuable to be handled by a rookie (or a late stage FA signing) and I just don't understand that thought process. So yes an extra $1M-$2M is not a huge deal on its own, but when you add all these slightly overpaid depth contracts together if does start to become an issue.

Bingo. Not just the wasted $ and what player that could help sign but the lost opportunity to develop a younger player. Look at last year, when guys got hurt we were out bring in Dean Marlowe again. How do we not have capable young guys around?

    I was off a bit.

So $2.8M cap hit this year which is a bit steep for me. We could cut him after the season for $1.3M in dead cap in 2025 or keep him for $3.7M.

Now that we know the real numbers this is still an overpay IMO. Depth safeties should be day three rookie contracts.

Not awful. But I would have bet my right arm if we let him hit free agency we could have got him for $1.5M or less. He was coming off being a starter last year and the safety market was much lighter and still had no interest. No idea why anyone would think after a year he had less of a role and more options available he would demand more. But hey we only wasted a mil or two. No biggie.

Yet again, the real details of a contract come out and paint it in a much more favorable and justifiable light for the team than it seemed at first.

Not to sound like a broken record, but reactions to first announcements of contracts are a waste of time and typing effort.

As others have said, this is "compete to start but may wind up as the 3rd safety again" money. Good. I like Rapp in that capacity.

Yes but...he got over a mil raise that was unwarranted and in a stacked market. We could have signed a ton of 3rd safeties for half that money. Its not awful but its still a raise and with guaranteed money that was not needed.

The Safety Free Agent market is loaded. What's the rush, Beane? Since the Safety market is loaded and most are better than Rapp is, McBeane could've taken a calculated risk and banked on him being available when the market goes dry and sign him for between vet minimum $915K and no more than the $1.77M he made last season.

The reason why McBeane re-signed Rapp is because they have trust issues which is why they sign a lot of players they're familiar with. Trubisky and Haack is back for the very same reason. The Steelers released Trubisky 23 days ago, nobody wanted him. Why sign him now when you could've taken a calculated risk and waited to see what offers he gets from other teams before you offer him a contract? Last season Trubisky played like a 3rd string QB for God sakes and a veteran minimum QB!!! Based on that, in my opinion, this is what Trubisky's market value should be.

My exact thoughts. Our cap situation is much worse this year than last but we double or triple the money to Rapp when he would likely be available during free agency for peanuts. Then we increase our back up QB spend from $1M on Allen to an almost $3M cap hit. These two guys are costing between $6M-$8M when it could have been had for $2-$4M. That $4M could have gone a long way.

So I'd pay him more than Gabbert for the same reason I'd rather have Trubisky than Kyle Allen - he's better. Browning had a nice year last year. I actually liked him as draftable the year he came out. But it has taken him 5 or 6 seasons to get on an NFL field.

I have been clear I'd draft a kid too on day 3 and be willing to carry a 3rd on the roster in 2024 while you let the day 3 guy learn and develop with the hope that the next 3 years he is your backup at a day 3 rookie contract number. But those are, to an extent, lottery tickets.

I tend to agree. But in a year that we are cap strapped I risk having a lower quality back up QB and use the extra money on starting caliber DL, WR and DB.

Do we have details on that contract yet? Total head scratcher yesterday. He's not a starting safety imo. Perhaps a big nickel.

Have not seen anything yet. But seems like at least a raise which is odd in this market and coming off a year he was not even a starter vs the year before. No doubt could have got him back for cheap.

Don't love the signing to be honest, especially when you consider the FA pool.... There are gonna be some decent safeties going for little money because of how deep it is.

In that market there is no way that Rapp would be in high demand. He wasnt last year when the market was not even close to this loaded. And I will add he was coming off a better year in which he started 16 games. Yet we are at least doubling his salary it appears? Makes no sense. I would have bet on bringing him back in the open market at essentially the same $1.7M he got this year.

It was a great start until they overpaid Rapp and are trying to sign the Garbage man Trubisky btw also bringing back Matt Haack was lazy work by Beane . Great start horrible ending like a bad movie!

Agreed. I would like to see them wait out on all of those signings. None scream of better get that guy before someone else does. Rapp looks overpay unless the report is greatly exaggerated. No way he should have gotten 3/$15M.

Great start?  We've lost a bunch of starters and contributors, signed a backup QB, and restructured some contracts to keep a couple of guys without emptying the bank.  Objectively, not a great start.

But I get the point.  Given the circumstances that he himself created, Beane seems to be doing a good job managing the cap challenges.

Yes - weird use of "great start". Did some obvious things (Harty, Hines, Bates, Douglas, Miller), some tough things (Morse, White, Poyer) and some "what" things (Rapp, Haack, Trubisky).

Usually when the report is “up to” it’s not too great for the player. Don’t mind this one. Probably ends up at 3-4M per season.

Which is double his salary and in a year that the market is flooded. Never mind he was coming off a year that he started when we signed him. I seriously do But he would have been in high demand in the market.

You don't really WHAT kind of money they're actually giving him, though. We have the absolute CEILING of the deal. That can be quite misleading. Come on, man

    Hope so.
