Why the Bills Won't Trade Up to #2 (or 3 or 4)
RochesterRob replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
6-9 is far more within reach for teams such as Arizona, New England, and even Pittsburgh. Belichick seems to do wonders with middling FA' so he is not sweating the cost like other teams would. -

A tiny fraction of the number of QB's who have played going back to the days of Y.A. Tittle (over 50 years ago). -

The Bills can't force teams to do a trade that they don't want to do. -

This has been my take for a long time now and Joe Webb plus Eli's remaining two years be damned. As far as trying to trade Eli most likely feelers were put out and the offers were not even chicken feed. -

In some cases I suspect mental health is an issue which is no joking matter so I worry whether the posters can handle it. When people say that the Giants HAVE TO follow their recommended course of action for example it tells me that somebody is having trouble facing reality. I hope nobody goes off the deep end and hurts someone (seriously). It's just a game people. -

I have been trying to get this point across for weeks now. The Giants may want to get their QB of the future now while the cost is cheap. Rosen, Darnold >>>>>>>>>>> Webb. -

Denial is not just a river in Egypt and there are a couple dozen posters minimum that emotionally have them selves set pretty high up. -
Bills the worst team in the NFL this season?
RochesterRob replied to Seanbillsfan2206's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yep, and he looks for them in terms of where they are most apt to come from. Boards such as this most likely are far more active than other boards especially if the NFL city also has MLB, NHL, and the NBA. -
Yep, some guys do act like that there are 6 franchise QB's and they are all interchangeable but that is not me. Even after the interviews and so forth there is still a chance a prospect will not work out. So even with full study and investigation there is still the chance of busting. Just how it goes when human beings are involved. Getting a QB is not like buying a 2 X 4 at Lowes. If you get the 2 X 4 home and it has a bow then it was your fault for not catching it before you left the store. The QB can look pretty good at the combine and at his pro day but you never know for sure until the bullets start flying which is the regular season of the NFL. Sure the pro's get it wrong less than us fans but there is a reason a fair number of NFL teams are not loaded with a highly productive QB.

Rumor: Tops Markets to declare bankruptcy
RochesterRob replied to \GoBillsInDallas/'s topic in Off the Wall Archives
There are a fair amount of instances where either Wegman's overlaps or in the case of Monroe County has given up territory to Tops (usually in economically depressed areas). This bankruptcy has to especially concern the mayors and city councils of Rochester and Syracuse as they coaxed Tops in to replace either a Wegman's or a mom and pop operation in run down areas. I would agree in that Tops has lost in favor of WalMart so it is an issue of competition. Very few including myself are old enough to remember when A & P was an overwhelming giant in the industry but the consumer suffered greatly so it really would not be good for WalMart to dominate any market on a local basis. -
Character and fit is of minimal impact when it comes time for a QB to sign his second contract. A guy can be a good worker and get along with teammates, coaches, and management but have different ideas as to where he wants to play when he truly has a choice in the matter. People point to Kelly but Kelly's situation is quite a bit different than any QB's under consideration currently for the Bills. Kelly's hometown really is little different than the dozens of 3-5000 person towns spread across WNY. Geographic proximity gets little mention but meant a lot to Kelly as he brought up quite a bit of family from PA to Orchard Park to see home games. Lastly, there is a critical time/age element in play for Kelly that is not for the rookies which is age when the first big contract ran out. The Bills still held Kelly's rights for 1986 and he even admitted at one time that made him unhappy but not to the point of refusing to sign and sitting out. Counting the 3 years from 1983 to 1986 and the five year contract that put him at an age where partying becomes less important and being a family man becomes the main priority. So when we re-upped Kelly he was at the perfect age to be comfortable being here complete with native wife. A big concern I have especially with Rosen is WNY will be permanently alien to him so he goes to a place that suits him more.

What do Rivers, E. Manning, and Big Ben have to do with keeping a QB under contract in Buffalo once the rookie deal, options, and franchise tag run out? Nothing in my mind. You can intend to keep the rookie for 18 years but that does not mean it is going to happen. What kept Manning, Rivers, and Big Ben where they are? Sun, big market, and a long winning tradition in those instances. What if health and injuries mean the rookie has pretty well faded in several years? Please re-read my comments and in particular about centers. I NEVER said that they NEVER hit the open market. I said that few make as far as the open market. When only a couple of high quality position players hit the market over several years that means you can not rely on such a FA when you need him. Youth at money positions is timing and Buffalo is on its own time table so what the contracts are for current players is what it is. Can't worry about the Falcons or Raiders. You know the best way not to have 30M tied up in centers and guards? Get them through the draft! 2021? I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you actually have seen these QB's but that is not the sum of what is going on. You do know that QB's can be traded for and that teams may have cap concerns such as they might welcome unloading a QB due to having more than one proven QB and have a shot of getting players coming in on rookie deals.

Now we are going to have this savior potentially 18 years? How? If somebody such as Rosen hates it here he will gone after his franchise tag year at the latest. Devalued positions are a concept created by a blowhole sports media. You know how you get RB, G, C, and LB even cheaper than FA? Get them through the draft! Take center for example. You want to know why they are priced "reasonably" on the FA market? It's because very few quality centers hit the market. If grades and evaluation supported it then, yes, I would seriously think about LB if it clearly has a much greater probability of upgrading the team versus QB. People act like QB's will never be made after 2018 and that is just not true.
-
I know that this is like farting into the wind but can we stop with the melodramatics. Nobody is getting fired over this draft. Terry and Kim no doubt have been briefed by McDermott and Beane so its not like there will be a surprise come draft day. Lets face it in that there will be no more than 2 players taken in the first and only one if we exercise a big move up. We have Rosen camps here. We have Darnold camps here. We have Mayfield camps here. You get the point. A certain portion of the board is going to be seriously disappointed come the end of next week as the team is not going to please everyone. If you can't be happy with what the team selected even if it is not your own personal preference you might just as well plan on quitting the team. The internet tough guy act is getting pretty old.

What you said is open to interpretation. By us and by the management of the other teams. Further, I am not taking up the argument for moving up but just trying to find some logic in what others who do want to move up propose in trading off picks. I am not the one saying that these prospects are elite, that they are franchise level, or once in a decade opportunity as others here have stated. But my argument to the trade up crowd is that if these guys are truly the supreme beings of football then why would other teams not want to get in on the opportunity? Going back to your statement about the Patriots having many needs they do but probably no more than the Bills do in terms of numbers of players. With the Dolphins I am questioning the trade up crowd in that if the Bills should seek every opportunity to upgrade the QB position as it is the most important in all of sports then why would other teams not see it in the same light. The trade up crowd proposes that if a team upgraded QB that would offset deficiencies in other areas on a team. They look at the 2017 Pats where in their mind a high quality QB can mask many other shortcomings and while it was true with the Pats that is an instance where that would be the exception rather than the rule.
-
Each QB has their own traits that make them a blue chip? That might be a perception held by many here but that most likely is not the case in any given NFL team FO. I doubt that these guys are viewed as completely interchangeable with one another. If they were there would be no logic in trading any higher than up to pick 4.
-
You're statement only means so much without context. Every trade proposal under the sun was made for the Bills to move up on this board. Are you criticizing a move up to 5,4,3,2, or 1st overall as some have suggested? I don't think that somebody said that the Bills could not move up if they offered at a minimum of three firsts, three seconds, and maybe some pocket change picks. By the way the Pats have two 1st's, two 2nd's, and a third this year plus their full compliment for 2019 which contains a first. In addition Belichick is supposed to be the master of turning chicken crap into chicken salad so by that logic he could get by without those picks and sign more of our castoffs. Why can't Miami open the bidding with their 1st & 2nd picks for 2018 along with their 1st and 2nd picks for 2019 with perhaps a player to sweeten the deal? Again, if the argument here is that the top 4 QB's are special and the Bills should move up at a steep cost then why would the other teams not have a similar view? I get that there can be some variation in the evaluation process but the if those QB's are franchise players as some here suggest (not me) then why would other teams turn up their noses at them?

I doubt that Elway has gotten that much word back to him regarding 1-4. The Giants could be staying put to draft Ei's replacement which would mean that along with Cleveland and the Jets 3 QB's could be gone by number 4. It would take one heck of a coincidence for somebody to value the leftover QB at 5 enough to offer Denver a heavy package of picks.
-
Actually, 2 & 4 just got more expensive as teams such as the Cards in theory don't have the luxury to play the waiting game until picks 6-10 if pick 5 is sold to a team that is obviously making a move up to get a QB. This means any other QB hungry team such as Miami, Pittsburgh, or New England can jump the new owner of number 5. As said before the auction is not done until the Commish goes to the podium.
