  1. One of the reasons I like a trade up or a trade down is that down the road you really would have a hard time keeping both guys. The fifth year option would be pretty expensive as first rounders and contracts would be coming up for both guys who both play the defensive tackle spot. I might go DT and DE.

Cleveland is on the verge of that issue. Because they have had so many first rounders the last few years, those fifth year options are all going to come at the same time.

I love a trade up for a quarterback. If I can't trade up, I make a pick at 21 and trade down with 22 to accumulate more picks. Just my 2 cents.

I don't think it's a question of outbidding anyone.  The team that gets him will have more or less made or matched the best offer, but Cousins is a serious guy and he's not going to chase the money.   His deal, wherever he goes, is going to make him really rich.   He's going to decide among those teams that offer enough money, but not necessarily the most money.   So I think the winner will be the team that offers him things he's looking for.   I doubt the weather would move him, but Elway and that defense could, Jacksonville (are they looking?) and Minnesota could be attractive.   My point was that the Bills have a lot that makes them attractive, too.  I think if they decide they want to spend the money, the Bills could be a serious bidder.

Your post a couple of pages ago is really the first time I thought seriously about the situation. You really have made the first convincing argument that I've read that makes me feel good about the possibility of Cousins happening. I just think that there are a ton of moving parts and good amount of competition. I hope we come out on top because he really does seem like a McDermott type of guy.

That's not correct, according to Horned what's his face, posted in this thread earlier today:

There's room.   The question isn't cap room; the question is whether they want him.

I also think we will have quite a bit of competition. I'm down with Cousins, but I don't see us outbidding Cleveland, the Jets, Minnesota, even Washington.  Us Jacksonville, Arizona, and Denver are all pretty much neck and neck with cap space.

I think the question is can we sell him on us? I think you make some great points, but we are going to have to woo him. That also means somehow beating out John Elway, Arizona weather, Jacksonville and Minnesota's readiness to win, the Jets and Browns $$$$. It's going to be tough to come out with Cousins.

Should have just drafted him instead of TJ Graham :(

from 3 wins to super bowl? Wow

I know it's probably a little generous, but they need not rebuild. They can turn it around quick. Their problem was OBJ was hurt and their line was terrible. Plus McAdoo was a problem. If they shore up that o line they can make a run. That defense is going to be really good with the hire of James Bettcher. Their three win season was an anomaly in my opinion.

I could see Cordy going to the NYG in a trade...

It's so early but it makes so much sense for this to be a part of a trade up. Say the Giants make that trade Cordy, grab some linemen at 21, 22, they could be back in the Super Bowl next year. I know you have to grab the franchise guy when you can, but if Eli is going to play 3-4 more years then there is no need.

If we are going coaches the most obvious selection for me would be none other than, drum roll please...Mike Malarkey and the heart wrenching loss to the Steelers backups for what could have ended the drought years ago! :angry:

    Damn that Brian St. Pierre

  7. Fun fact, Groy spent about a month on the Patriots roster in 2015 while Daboll was there, so there is some crossover. It's not a big connection, but they are familiar with each other and one would assume he is the type of lineman who fit the scheme.

Also, I know we all hate Juan Castillo, but if he is back Ryan Jensen would be a nice get in free agency. Jensen developed under Castillo and had a really nice year in his first year as a starter. He's 26 years old. He can also play guard.

Honestly I'd sign Jensen and have Groy. One plays center, one plays RG.

The one wild card is that I could see the Browns taking Barkley at #1 and then taking a qb at #4.

I lean this way as well. It makes sense to draft the best position player, then take whichever QB is left at 4. They are probably going to pick the wrong guy anyway, so maybe they should let fate choose?

I agree that the guy’s floor seems incredibly low, and scary for a potential franchise QB. I’m also concerned that he doesn’t take criticism well. To be a good pro he’ll need to listen, and take criticism well. Mayfield’s Rose Bowl antics really turned me off. After stating that he had learned from his mistakes, he made another. He walked into the Rose Bowl carrying a sign that read “pretenders”. This was a response to a Lee Corso comment regarding OU in the preseason. Why is he even worried about a commentator’s remark from months ago? He doesn’t seem to learn, and continues to bring controversy to himself. I don’t condemn anyone for making mistakes. I do question their character and intellect when they continue to make the same ones. The NFL isn’t Wrestlemania. How will Mayfield react when his personality is stifled by a pro franchise ?

Pretty much completely agree. Good stuff. I know its boring to be the guy who ignores criticism like Eli Manning, but that what I want my quarterback to be. Boring and efficient.

Interesting tidbit on WGR this morning, basically saying that Mayfield is calculated in drawing the attention to himself, especially from the opponent, because he doesn't mind it and it allows his teammates to focus and not have so much pressure on them.

That is a pretty interesting concept. Kind of taking one for the team. It sounds like sugar coating, but I do buy it to a certain extent. If he's willing to take on the criticism to protect his teammates that is pretty cool. I don't love how he responds to the criticism and it seems like it has the potential to be Ryan Leaf-like.

Taking this post from the Bills sub-reddit:

Here's the link for those that have a PFF subscription and can read it:

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/2018-nfl-free-agency-tracker

For those that don't have it, PFF publishes a massive PDF breaking down all the free agents-to-be, and part of their breakdown is pairing them up with the team they believe the player is the best fit for. The exact methodology is as follows:

Each unrestricted free agent has been given an ideal team to land with in free agency. This does not necessarily mean that each of those teams should be pursuing every one of those free agents, but rather that each of those players matches what those teams do from a schematic or stylistic point of view. Salary cap space and roster construction has also been factored in when looking at those ideal team fits, and they reflect the most sensible landing spot for each player in isolation, not as a complete team shopping list for the free agency period as a whole.

The end result is the following list of players for Buffalo, in order of the positions listed in the guide:

    • RB Damien Williams
    • FB Derrick Coleman
    • WR John Brown
    • WR Andre Roberts
    • TE Jeff Cumberland
    • OT Austin Pasztor
    • DT Daequan Jones
    • DT Kyle Williams
    • DE Ezekiel Ansah
    • DE Arthur Moats
    • LB Bruce Carter
    • CB EJ Gaines

Very strange list and besides Ansah, Kyle and Gaines, a lot of it doesn't make sense. Look like it was put together but someone that knows nothing about our team.

Damien Williams is just a generic backup running back. he's nothing special. You could probably get someone like him late in the draft. Williams also has red flags and was dismissed from Oklahoma when he was there.

Derrick Coleman is a fullback who is not better than Patrick DiMarco, and has been suspended for off the field stuff.

John Brown makes some sense as a deep threat, but probably not much better than Deonte Thompson. He's also had a ton of injury issues. He did have a huge year in 2015.

Andre Roberts visited here a couple of years ago and chose to sign somewhere else. He's an okay punt returner. Slight upgrade from Tate.

Jeff Cumberland is a blocking tight end who is an okay player. Guys like him can always be found in the draft for cheaper like East_West Shrine interview Ethan Wolf as an UDFA.

Austin Pasztor is a Canadian backup right tackle who was available for league minimum last summer.

Daquan Jones would be an interesting add as a depth player on the defensive line. A PSU alum who was a fourth round pick. Coming off a torn biceps.

Arthur Moats is a severely undersized defensive end who has been valuable as a rotational piece as a linebacker for Pittsburgh. He would be an awful fit in our defensive scheme at end or linebacker.

Bruce Carter was a big time free agent signing of the Bucs a few years ago. They expected him to come in and be their MIKE and be awesome. He played like crap and got benched and then cut. His defensive coordinator at the time? Leslie Frazier.

So yeah, I'm not a fan of this list. It seems like a lazy plugging of positional needs.
