I wonder if the holdup is waiting on what happens in INDY. If they hire a defensive coach, he might want to keep chudzinski and I could see all those Carolina guys going to indy to work with luck

This seems like it is becoming more likely. With the report that McDaniels is taking the Indy job, one would assume Chudz is out. In fact, I think this is what Mike McCoy was waiting for as he was McDaniels' OC in Denver.

Chudz+Dorsey makes a lot of sense.

  2. The stuff that Bevell was doing early in Wilson's career with the read options he really isn't doing much anymore. I think it's tough to type cast Bevell as a mobile quarterback guy just because he coached Russell Wilson. He literally coached one mobile guy in his 20 year career. It does show that he knows how to adjust his offense to the strengths of his players.

Tyrod Taylor is nothing like Wilson in that he simply doesn't have the same passing ability. Beane has said that the most important thing is having a quarterback who can win from inside the pocket. That is not, nor will ever be Taylor.

This is probably a good thing. I'm now hoping we land Chudzinski as OC and Dorsey at QB Coach. They have a ton of experience together and I think they'd be a good team to develop and groom our upcoming rookie QB.

To me that is the dream team. If we do awesome and Chudzinski gets an HC opportunity again then you simply promote Dorsey. I can't think of a much better situation to bring a young quarterback into.

That’s an interesting thought and probably true. I think that firing Rico should be considered a feather in his cap. He was able to admit the mistake and pull the plug without worrying about “how does this look for me?” He will have to get it right with the next one but I am thrilled to see that he had the confidence to do it.

Well put. I know a lot of fans like continuity, but if something sucks real bad, what is the point of continuity? I'm glad McDermott was willing to pull the plug. I hope he is willing to do the same with one of his cronies in Castillo.

I do wonder if Chud is getting to much credit for those first 2 cam seasons. Shula was the QB coach during that time. Also Shula had a great 2015. Shula is actually more accomplished than Chud.

Shula definitely has a ton of experience, and has been around for a really long time (likely because who his father is). But he has been hated by the Panthers fans for a very long time. My biggest issue with him is not knowing how to use McCaffrey properly.

The one thing I will add for Chudzinski is that in the 2013 year with the Browns he had something going until Brian Hoyer got hurt. That was the year they beat us Bills on Thursday night. The game where Kiko jumps over the line to make a tackle and EJ got hurt heading out of bounds. The Browns started 0-2 that year and Brandon Weeden got hurt. Chudzinski decided to go with Brian Hoyer over Jason Campbell because "it gave them the best chance to win." Literally said the same stuff McDermott says to the media.

This was his exact quote: "I feel like based on our current situation -- where we're at offensively as well as getting into the game planning for Minnesota -- that Brian's strengths are the best fit for this week and that he gives us our best chance to win," Chudzinski said. "The things that he does well fit what we need. For me, it's about who gives us the best chance to win."

Sound familiar? These guys speak the same language.

Anyway, the Browns go on a 3 game winning streak, Hoyer gets hurt and they finish 4-12. For a couple of weeks there Hoyer was big news. "The Browns are back" is what people were saying. Josh Gordon had 87 catches for 1646 yards and 9 TDs, with Hoyer, Weeden, and Campbell throwing to him. Chudzinski knows how to coach offense. He also made Derek Anderson a competent QB and is responsible for the development of Antonio Gates in San Diego. He also developed peak Kellen Winslow Jr. I'm really excited about the possibility of Chudzinski.

  6. If Chudzinski is hired....

I am all over the Donte Moncrief train. He plays for Chudzinski and seems like he can breakout at any minute. He's big and fast and a great #2 to KB.

I know it's not their usual process, but Josh Gordon had his huge breakout season with Chudzinski as head coach. They seemed to have a really good relationship as well. I know he's not a free agent, but if Chudzinski is hired I think he's a possibility.

I really like Allen Robinson but I think he isn't going to be too expensive. I think there is a chance the Chargers cut Travis Benjamin who would be a huge boost for the return game. Also had some good times under Chudzinski.

It is very strange that they fired Dennison before Taylor. Why give another OC an option to keep Taylor.

Not sure if they can actually release Taylor at this point? I don't know. It does not harm to keep him on the roster at this point, as long as he is gone eventually.

i hope so.  i hope all of the offensive coaches go.  i wasn't high on any of them

I really hope that Castillo is gone, but I'm not so sure that will be the case, unfortunately. Castillo is a Reid/McDermott guy whereas Dennison had no previous working relationship with McDermott.

    I want:

    OC: Chudzinski

    QB: Dorsey

    OL: Someone else

    WR: Someone Else

    TE: Rob Boras

  9. I think we have to look at our coach and GM. There are a lot of possibilities out there, but if their tendencies are any indication, I think we can rule some things out.

    1. I don't think there is any way we sign Kirk Cousins. Cutting half the team to sign a soon to be 30 year old quarterback 30 million a year is the opposite of "responsible spending." I don't think hitching their careers on Cousins is going to be seen as a wise move for Beane and McDermott. They have the support of the Pegulas so they have an opportunity to bring in a bridge and draft a young guy. The idea is to have long term stability at the QB spot. Bringing in a guy who is already 30, and really not special doesn't seem to fit that bill. We can easily be outbid by the Browns and the Jets. Both Todd Bowles and Hue Jackson have a short time to turn this thing around to save their careers. I think they go the veteran route.

    2. I can't see this regime drafting Baker Mayfield. He's a playmaker sure, but he just doesn't check many of the "process" boxes for McDermott and Beane. He does have the leadership qualities they talk about, but Beane has consistently emphasized having a guy who can win from inside the pocket. I don't think they are hitching their careers on what he calls a "sandlot" quarterback. I personally think he is going to get physically destroyed at the NFL level. I like Mayfield, I just don't think there is any way they are going to draft him. He is very similar to Tyrod in a lot of ways with size and escapability, though he is less athletic than Tyrod. Mayfield is definitely a better thrower of the football, but he just won't check enough boxes in the process.  That's not even including the arrests and crotch grabbing stuff (which is putting yourself before the team).

I'm a bit weary on Josh Rosen, but I think he is everything they look for in a quarterback. I think it really depends on how their meetings with Rosen go. You have to get in the room and get to know the kid. Reports about his teammates hating him seem to be false. That said, I feel like their true target is going to be the squeaky clean Darnold. Beane mentioned draft capital, and last year they moved around the board to get the guys they wanted. Trading up for Zay Jones and Dion Dawkins shows that they are willing to be aggressive in their pursuit of their targeted players. I think they make the Browns or Giants an offer they can't refuse. The idea that Beane thinks about draft picks as capital makes me feel feel pretty good about the fact that they are willing to jump all the way up the board.  It has worked for Philly and LA in recent years. We can't settle for the "JP Losman" 4th quarterback off the board. Its Rosen, Darnold, or nothing at all in my opinion.

  10. I am having a tough time with Preston Brown. I don't think he is very good and I think he is extremely slow. The problem is that the free agent landscape is barren and I am not so sure if there is a game changing MIKE in the draft aside from Georgia's Smith. Tahir Whitehead, Mason Foster, Christian Jones, Will Compton...those are the type of MLB available in free agency this year, and I'm not so sure they are upgrades over Preston. Tahir Whitehead is probably the best of the bunch. I really wouldn't mind Preston coming back and sliding into the part time SAM spot that Lorax occupied. He's actually a pretty good fit for that spot as he can set an edge and also has very long arms. I don't hate him coming back, but he has to move to SAM and be a two down player.

We really need a game changing MIKE, and outside of Roquan Smith, I just don't see one anywhere.

  11. I'm going Alex Smith, and a trade up for Rosen/Darnold. We have tried a lot of different things over the past fifteen years to try and get a QB. The one thing that we haven't tried is a bold trade up for an elite prospect. I think now is the time for that move. I think a trade up with the Giants can definitely happen. What they need more than anything is a offensive line. At 21 and 22 the Giants could grab the best LT available like McGlinchey or Connor Williams and get a guy like Billy Price. That instantly takes them to playoff contenders again and lengthens Eli's career. They could also ask for Cordy Glenn in trade scenarios. The Beane-Gettleman connection certainly helps.

I think, just cap space wise, Kirk Cousins goes to the Browns or the Jets. Teams like us, Jacksonville, Denver, Arizona are simply not able to afford him. The Browns and Jets have enough cap space to sign him without blowing up their entire team. We can't afford Cousins, and even if we could we are in competition with people who have way more money under the cap. Finally, if you sign the 30 year old Cousins, he isn't a bridge, he is your guy, which solidifies the position for 5 years or so. Then we are looking again for a long term answer.

Drew Brees is a huge wildcard, but I don't see him leaving New Orleans. If he did he'd go to a dome like Minnesota or Arizona.

Here's a guess on how things play out in QB carousel 2018:

Browns - AJ McCarron - I think they get it done this time by trying something different than drafting  a young guy.  They have tried to draft guys and it hasn't worked. Get AJ and use your two top picks to get Barkley and Minkah Fitzpatrick. Or use one of those picks to trade down.  I think they like Kizer as a developmental guy.

Jets - Cousins - They have a ton of Cap and if I'm Cousins I'd pick NY over Cleveland. Bowles has a chance here with his mini contract extension. Drafting a guy high guarantees he won't be the head coach when that guy is ready. I think they go veteran as Cousins can save his career. It makes zero sense for this coach and GM to go with a rookie QB.

Vikings - Keenum - I think they would be crazy to let him walk after this year. I think they should keep Bridgewater, but I think they have to keep Keenum.

Redskins - Bradford - He's a good fit for what Jay Gruden does. I think they draft a guy this year. I'm going Mason Rudolph here.

Broncos  - I think they will make a play for Cousins. They are also a great fit for Alex Smith. KC will not trade him in the division in my opinion. To me the Broncos wind up with Jay Cutler or something like Nick Foles, Josh McCown and draft a young guy. I'm guessing Josh Allen. Seems like what Elway would want.

Cardinals - Can't really say until they hire their coach, but I'm going Teddy Bridgewater. He's 25 years old and a great fit in a dome. This allows you to use your first round pick on something else.

Jags - I think they are our biggest competitor for Alex Smith. I could see them making a play for Josh McCown if the Jets sign Cousins. Bortles should be out and I'm assuming Marrone will want a veteran. I could see them making a play for Bradford as well.

If this scenario plays out, we'd be left with Alex Smith and would just have to get things done in the draft. I do think that Andy Reid gives the Bills a slight discount on an Alex Smith trade. They need to move him because he has a 20 million dollar cap hit. They also clearly want to move on to Mahomes and are looking for an excuse to do so. You just need to offer them something respectable like a 3rd rounder or two. In my opinion, they will not cut him for fear that he will go to the Broncos in their division. The Bills biggest competition would probably be the Jags or Redskins.

Can you tell us that one story you used to tell, you know the one where Sammy is on a parallel track with Julio Jones and that how any day/month/year now he's going to be just as good.

We could use both those players.   Hopefully they do tag Sammy, I would imagine they would have to get rid of at least one of those players.

Man I'd love to have Robert Quinn. Would fix a lot of issues. There is a minimal dead cap if they cut him now. He's probably fairly replaceable in Wade's scheme and would be a perfect fit here.
