  1. I really do want to like him, but I just don't see it. As kdiggz said above he really reminds of Bryce Petty, though Petty has a better arm and is a better athlete. He's big, but everything else seems so blah.

Most of the issues the boom or busts guys like Allen and Jackson have, Rudolph also has. Shoddy footwork, accuracy etc etc etc. But he has those same flaws without the upside or the huge arm or athleticism. Like I said I really do want to like him so hopefully he changes my mind over the next few months and I come around. To me he just isn't a franchise QB and his potential isn't much higher than Nathan Peterman's.

  2. Tyrod - 5th

    Cordy - 2nd

    Hughes - 3rd

    Shaq - 4th

I think these are their peak values. Tyrod is probably not tradeable, Cordy is coming of an injury. Hughes did nothing this year and Shaq has done nothing in his career.

Glenn is our best trade asset in my opinion. Duane Brown was traded with a 5th for a 2nd and a future 3rd.  Brown is older than Cordy but also better probably.

You do realize that last year our Offense was among the top in the league in Red Zone scoring, right?

redzone offense last year was top 10 if i'm not mistaken. don't mistake that as me making excuses for taylor.... but dennison has to be held accountable for that decline.

Yep I'm with you guys. i think we were great in the redzone because of the scheme. Designing a red zone offense around Tyrod makes sense. Having him throw fades does not.

I know I'm talking in circles, I guess the bottom line is that Dennison sucks and Tyrod can be good with a really strong run game and an offense that plays to his strengths. But he cannot be sucessful in the red zone in a more conventional WCO.

I still want them both gone.

the problems with getting cute in the redzone didn't just start this last sunday

Dennison's play calling was putrid in the red zone pretty much all year.

Tyrod also sucks in the red zone. You need to be able to throw balls in tight windows that get much tighter down inside the 20. You also need to be able to throw guys open with anticipation. He's terrible at both of those things. As much as Peterman sucked, he actually completed a great fade on the goaline in the snow. Tyrod can't make that throw.

Did his play calling suck because he was limited by his quarterback?  I hope we never find out because they both need to get kicked to the curb.

    Rickey Hatley

I guess we picked him up for the practice squad a couple of weeks ago and within a few days was brought up to the team and  played some snaps vs Miami (NT).

I looked at the box score vs Jax and the guy got 3 tackles (combined) in only 18 snaps.

Now I wish I'd recorded the game, just to see if I could pick him out.  His # is 94.

Anybody comment?  Maybe we'll get lucky on this guy.  Sure would be nice to not spend a draft choice or get a FA and DT is for sure a big need.

Hatley didn't stand out to me. He is tall and big, but isn't really a 1 technique tackle. Looked like he played rather high to me, but he did rotate a bit. I think he's more of a 3-4 defensive end with his build, but hes not a bad Swiss army knife guy for depth. He could play the 1, 3, or heavy defensive end in the under alignment.

Hmm, I don't know about that. Carolina seemed to always put up very good sack numbers under McDermott. Not sure how, just great players? Did he blitz more with Carolina? again, I am not sure, but those teams got after the QB.

Not sure he really blitzed more. I think great coverage by linebackers helped those guys get to the quarterback. I also think dominate tackles helped to bring pressure up the middle.

I'd probably go after Kony Ealy and draft a guy like Sam Hubbard.

  7. I mentioned this in another thread but my target is Donte Moncrief (hopefully coming with Rob Chudzinski). He is fast, big, and a play maker. I believe we have an elite guy in KB and Moncrief is probably the perfect #2. He had  a down year, so he should be cheap, but I think he has tremendous potential. He's also an outside reciever so you can play Zay Jones in the slot.

  8. I will take a second to connect some dots.

Bevell was originally hired by Mike Sherman who is a Mike Holmgren guy and coached with Andy Reid in Green Bay. When Mike Sherman got hired by Green Bay he brought Bevell on staff. During this time Brad Childress was Andy Reid's offensive coordinator in Philly. When the Vikings hired Childress, he hired Bevell. When Childress was let go and Leslie Frazier was made head coach, Frazier let Bevell go and he went to Seattle.

So there are some connections there as McDermott and Bevell are part of the same coaching tree .

Pretty sure Bills intreviewed him for HC either last year or in 2015.

It was 2015 before we hired Rex Ryan.

When Bevell was OC in Minnesota, Leslie Frazier was DC. That could be a connection.

Frazier basically fired him when he went from interim head coach to head coach. But who knows? Frazier replaced him with Bill Musgrave and Bevell wound up in Seattle.

But Frazier doesn't make the decisions, and one would assume he regrets that decision. I'd be all for a Bevell hire.

  10. I think we are in a tough spot. We currently run a WCO, so guys like Keenum, Bridgewater and Falk and Rudolph in the draft should, in theory, be great fits for our offense. WCO doesn't require a super strong arm, it requires accuracy, timing, and anticipation.

With that said, we are still Buffalo and asking a guy like Keenum to throw the ball around in windy conditions might be asking too much. That is why we haven't been able to find the "guy" for so long. You need a big guy, with big hands, with timing and anticipation, and accuracy to be successful in Buffalo. Those guys don't grow on trees.

Keenum sounds great on paper, yet I do not think he is a great fit for Buffalo. That is kind of why I feel its Alex Smith...while he doesnt have the strongest arm he has been playing in similar conditions for years and his arm is strong enough. He has great size, accuracy, and is very durable. Smith is the perfect bridge. Kirk Cousins makes sense, but he wouldn't be a bridge, he'd be "the" guy. Being 30 years old, I'm not sure he solves the long term issue at QB. It would be like acquiring the 30 year old Drew Bledsoe again.

In the draft I feel like you are limited to Rosen or Darnold. Allen if you feel you can get him to be more accurate. In my opinion, most of the other guys are too small, or simply do not have the physical ability.

  11. Rosen and Darnold I think can be true franchise quarterbacks, obviously it's a crapshoot, but either would be the best QB prospect we've had really since Jim Kelly. We need a real top blue chip prospect, not a Losman type 4th best QB in the draft.

Think I'd only trade up for one of them. If I can't get there I just sit and see how the draft plays out.

I do think the Giants might consider it. Two picks in the 20s allows them to draft what they really need which is offensive line. Maybe they'd want Cordy Glenn too.

  12. The whole offensive staff probably needs to go. Dennison had never called plays before is old and sucks. Castillo has done a crappy job wherever he's been. Culley is a WR coach coaching quarterbacks. Too early to tell on McGeoghan, but we got little out of our wideouts plus I blame him for getting us Zay Jones instead of JuJu, Cooper Kupp, even Chris Godwin. I like the job Rob Boras has done with tight ends, specifically with the development of Nick O'Leary. Kelly Skipper is whatever. I don't think Shady needs a coach, but it's too early to tell if he can develop a young guy because we don't have one.

Just really underwhelemed with this offensive staff overall.

  13. I will say that Tyler Bray is one of those guys who never got a shot but has a lot of talent. He isn't your typical third string QB and Reid has kind of been hoarding him for awhile. I actually really liked him in the EJ Manuel draft. He's had injuries and things, but he was one of the most talented players in that draft. He want undrafted because he was a jerk. But he's been in the league for awhile so one would assume he's matured.  Now I feel that if you are bringing him in to be the starter I would say no way! But he would be interesting depth. Who knows he could be the next Rich Gannon or Kurt Warner. He's still just 26 years old and the definition of "let's let this guy develop for awhile."

I think you you still need to make a play forna guy like Alex Smith or something along those lines.

Yeah I don't doubt Castillo is also largely to blame - maybe even more so than Dennison for the outside zone not working this year.

The Bills did run outside zone plays 30 times last year (less than twice per game), but did execute it very well.   They averaged 5.73 yard per carry while doing it and averaged 2.77 yards before contact.   That was fantastic.   The average NFL team got 3.84 yards per carry and 1.16 yards before contact.   The Bills were dominant running the ball every way they tried to in 2016.   But they only ran that outside zone 30 times in the season where the NFL average was 91 times.   Atlanta, who ran it very well, ran it 200 times in comparison.

I don't know how many times the Bills ran the outside zone this year.   I think it was a lot, lot more often in the first few games and a lot, lot less often more recently.   But they weren't executing it very well at any point this season if I recall correctly.    And they mostly gave up on it in the last few games to their credit.   Although Dennison did call it in the playoff game at least once that I remember and it went for negative 3 yards with Shady getting mauled in the backfield.   (similar to what happened so often this year early on when they ran it)

I think an awful lot of last year's running game success can/should be attributed to the unpredictability of the running game and the fact that we had a very good 2nd back that could sometimes outperform the starting back.    Last year you weren't sure which gap the back was going to attack or even if it was going to be a back at all.   Sometimes the QB ran it.    You weren't even sure whether they were going to run to the strong side or weak side or counter.

This year it seems like you can guess, with too much accuracy, where the point of attack is going to be.  If we can do that watching from the stands or from our couches, then I am sure the other teams' defenses are doing it with a much higher degree of accuracy.

And with teams stacking the box and run blitzing, it makes sense why they are getting into the backfield to tackle Shady for a loss on those long developing outside zone plays.

As far as Dennison goes, the run game and pass game have gotten worse since he took over.   And we didn't think the pass game could get worse than it was.   Since he has been here, the Bills rarely make big plays either running or passing.   Yet they did last year and the year before.    I blame him for a large percentage of that.   Unacceptable performance.  I don't think he is likely or even capable of building a dominant offense period.  Not good enough.  Just my opinion.

Great post. Great point on the unpredictability of the run game. I hope we get a coach in here who mixes things up in the run game and opens things up in the passing game. Dennison definitely needs to go. One of the things that I found interesting is how great the script was for opening offensive possessions. I think that shows that he is a good coach but a terrible play caller. Once the script was up it seemed like he had no idea what he was doing.  I think you could keep him on as a senior offensive assistant and hire someone else. Chudzinski, Mike McCoy, Ken Dorsey, I'll take any of the three.

  15. I am interested to see what happens. There are some serious flaws in some big spots. Obviously quarterback being the biggest issue. But they need to rebuild the offensive line, or adapt teh run game (can teh OC and line coach. ) They also need to rebuild the linebacking corps and the defensive line. Aside from Hughes and Williams, they were just bad. I like what I saw from Shaq Lawson, but he needs to take it up a notch. But if McDermott is going to rotate guys as much as he did, the backups cannot be Hatley and Cap Capi.
