Thats true. Then we could keep losing like always, but lose with a respectable D-Line.

I mean drafting the fifth best quarterback probably isn't doing the job either. We lost games because teams ran all over us, we had no sacks, and the QB stinks. So that's what needs to be fixed.

  2. There 100% would be a trade up to 3 if Darnold is still there. Someone would trade up.

I do not see the Bills taking a one year starter , transfer players in Hughes after drafting all four year starters last year.

Hurst is a popular choice in McD's scheme. Find me the next Fletcher Cox or Brendan Graham.

I wouldn't mind going Hurst and Hubbard. D-Line would mostly be fixed. Honestly, if we can't trade up, I make one pick at 21, then trade down.

  3. Nick Stevens is one of the only quarterbacks in this draft that Brian Daboll saw live in game. Doesn't necessarily mean anything, but Alabama didn't really play against any of the QBs in this draft this year, assuming Nick Fitzgerald goes back for his senior year.

I think this may hurt him a bit. Teams want to see what he looks like in a pro style offense in practice and in the game. This will still be an unknown and might hurt his stock a bit.

This will test how smart McBeane really is

100%. How McBeane handles this quarterback search will truly define their regime. That's why I don't think they will draft a mid tier guy, I think they will do everything they can to get up to the top 2.

  5. With all of the OC spots opening up this week, getting out in front of it and grabbing the guy they wanted makes a ton of sense and shows some foresight and prudence.

Not or sure how he will do, but it certainly feels like we got the guy we wanted, and I'm good with that.

I like to see us keep the mid teir theme going.

    RB

Jerrick Mckinnon- wouldn't cost much and can play multiple roles for Daboll . He's smooth out the bkfield catching the ball and has speed to take to house from anywhere on the field.  He's also become a much better RB running threw the tackles the past 2 seasons. Draft a bk (Sony Michael) and sign Mckinnon and we will have the best trio of bks in the NFL.

TE - Trey Burton this guy is a gamer a young healthy version of Charles Clay. Burton would be immediate upgrade for us at TE and would allow us to cut ties with Clay during the offseason.

Wr - Taylor Gabriel gives us a speedster we definitely need to open things up underneath.

These 3 signings won't break the bank and would give some much needed play makers on the offensive side of the ball.  Also gives us flexibility in the draft to add some talent to our Defense.

McKinnon is a nice change of pace back. I think he may follow Shurmur. I think Burton is going to go someplace where he can be the immediate starter. I don't think we cut Charles Clay just yet. I think he will be better in Daboll's offense where he played earlier in his career. Gabriel is a nice receiver but he is tiny. He's a 3/4 at best in my opinion. I do like his speed though.

I respect your opinion but suck is a strong word for me to describe Brown's play. You may dislike him for the current system, and I do agree to certain extent, but I believe Brown is a player versatile enough to help you win games.

You are right. It's probably not fair of me . He's not a good fit for what we do. I do like his energy and leadership and such. He's just too slow and being asked to do things he isn't good at.

The main reason the Saints ran all over us was the absence of Dareus. When the guys up front are manhandled at the LOS no LB will look good.  Both the Jets and the Saints ran all over us until we somewhat adjusted, which was remarkable, I must say.

This is a great point. It really was a gaping hole after they traded Marcell. Preston Brown does suck though.

Preston Brown was one of the reasons Saints ran all over us. Preston Brown is a 3-4 LB not 4-3 ILB

He's also one of the reasons Bortles ran all over the place. Those long scrambles don't happen unless your linebackers are SLOOOOW. Maybe the QB scrambles for 10 yards here and there, but not 38 yarders. He's a two down backer and he could be a SAM, but he isn't a MIKE in this defense. I think he could come back and take over the spot the Lorax occupied as a part time, 2 down linebacker.

I'm reading his spotrac page and I don't understand why would he be an option. Does he or the team have the option to opt out of the last two years of that contract?

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/los-angeles-rams/robert-quinn-7729/

They will eventually need the money for Geoff and Donald.

They could cut him or look to trade him.  They have UFAs coming up like  LaMarcus Joyner, Trumaine Johnson, Sammy Watkins. And like you said they eventually need money for Donald, Gurley, Goff. They have some time for Goff and Gurley, but Donald is set to be a UFA after 2018.

  11. If I am the Bills this is my plan for defense going into the off season. We need some starters but also need cheap depth. Obviously we won’t sign a million guys, but these are some of my thoughts.

CB - EJ Gaines - I think Gaines comes back. He's had an inconsistent career so far and while he is good, he is not a great fit for every defense. He had a great year for McDermott and I think it makes the most sense for him to stay put. Kyle Fuller is a great fit and a guy I really like if things don’t work with Gaines. A guy like Ross Cockrell who was drafted to be a zone corner could help as a nickel.

S - I'm grabbing Cody Davis of the Rams. He's a bigger safety who can play down in the box and is an ace special teamer. We need depth here. I'd re-sign Shamarko Thomas as well.

LB - This is a tough spot to fill but there are a few option out there. First,  I try to grab Tahir Whitehead to play middle backer. He’s played both inside and outside and seems to be a good fit for this defense. If not him, maybe Christian Jones or Mason Foster.  I think Jones has some untapped potential and was miscast in the Bears 3-4.  Also, I’d keep an eye on New England to see if they make a cap casualty out of Shea McClellin. He’s coming off of IR and the Pats have had some youngers guys step up and play well in his absence. McClellin has McDermott guy written all over him. He’s smart, versatile, and a tough player who is still young. You could plug him right in the middle. For depth and special teams I sign a guy like Jordan Tripp who can play all three linebacker positions.

DE - I’m keeping an eye on LA to see if Robert Quinn shakes loose as a cap casualty. They are going to try to re-sign Joyner, Johnson, and Watkins and some people believe that either Mark Barron or Quinn will shake loose. DeMarcus Lawrence is the crown jewel in FA but will be too expensive. I like Aaron Lynch, but he reported overweight last year. Doesn’t seem to be a McDermott type. Kony Ealy makes sense, though we did not put in a claim on him when he was on waivers. Trent Murphy, who is coming of an injury from the Redskins is very tough and has some pass rush ability. He's played a lot of OLB but is more of a defensive end in my opinion. Cassius Marsh could be a depth guy to help with pass rush.

DT - I think the first call in free agency has to be Star Lotulelei no? We badly need a 1 technique. Bennie Logan is very good as well. If the Rams keep Quinn and Barron, Michael Brockers could be the odd man out and I would be all over him. Jay Bromley could be a good fit as well.

Denver is definitely going after Cousins.  They're reportedly asking Demarius Thomas to take a paycut - I hope he refuses and we have a chance at him.

Personally I'd much rather go after Bridgewater - he'll be much cheaper than Cousins, he's coachable and his accuracy is way better than Cousins (to my untrained eye, at least - Cousins seems streaky to me).

I like Bridgewater too. He's only 25 years old and seems to have a lot of upside. My concern would be the health of that knee and his lack of arm strength in Buffalo. As others have posted here, the injury was pretty devastating. He's going to have to take a 1 year prove it deal.

If Darnold indeed declares for this draft both the Giants/Browns would be fools not to select Darnold and Rosen even if given a kings ransom... They both need QB's and 2 franchise stud QB's are staring them in the face. I guess the Bills will have to see if Mayfield/Lamar Jackson/ Josh Allen or Mason Rudolph are franchise QB's because I don't see a scenario where we get the top 2. Some people are huge Mayfield fans, I'm not one of those people, I like his fiery attitude but he seems to be quite immature, not Manziel immature but to the point where it warrants some red flags.

Darnold did declare for the draft. In my mind it depends how they feel about Davis Webb and Kizer. If you are the Giants and could drop down and draft two stud o-linemen, you could be in the Super Bowl next year. If the Browns like Kizer as their developmental guy they can sign a Cousins or McCarron and trade down. If they traded with us they would have 4, 21, 22 and more. I'm not saying it's going to happen but it's not out of the realm of possibility entirely.

Exactly - you basically eliminate the big play - anyone that is beat just tackle the WR.

This is especially true at the end of the game - it would have killed the end of the Saints game and probably the Baltimore/Cincinnati game that got us in.

Exactly this. It would ruin the game completely. I coach high school football and we teach our kids to commit PI if they get beat. There would be a ton more PI flags.

Bowles and Jackson are not the ones making the decision.  The GM is and the Browns GM is after a QB and I'm sure the Jets GM is too.

I get that but you have to look a little deeper. Bowles and Mccagnan are tied at the hip and got short contract extensions to turn things around. If they draft a young guy and go through a 3-13 season they are going to lose their jobs.

Dorsey was brought in to work with Jackson. The Browns have pretty much ignored Jackson and it hasn't helped. He clearly did not want to trade down all of those times and certainly did not want Cody Kessler. They have a young guy with great physical traits and potential in Kizer. Grabbing a veteran likely saves Jackson's career.

I have strong doubts CLE gets Cousins, but if anyone who is not us were to sign him this would be the best scenario.

Agreed. I do think he winds up with the NYJ. Denver is a great spot but the difference in cap space is huge. I do think there will be a sense of urgency for Bowles and Jackson to go veteran. I do think Elway wants a vet as well.

I dunno, didn't the new GM just come out and say the most important thing he has to do is find a QB? Hard to say that and then sign a backup as your response.

I don't think Jackson sees McCarron as a back up, but Dorsey might. I think it depends on how they feel about Kizer, but Jackson is going to lose his job before a guy like Rosen or Darnold develop, so I think they go the vet route. Same with Todd Bowles. He obviously is not a fan of the young QB, and if they draft a young guy, he will lose his job before they are ever any good.

I think Bowles and Jackson will push for veteran quarterbacks. With that said they can both outbid Denver significantly for Cousins if they want to.

This is the best case scenario. I still see him signing with Denver though. Hard to say no when John Elway comes calling.

Great fit, but man the Jets and Browns just have so much more cap space. I think he goes to the Jets with Bowles not wanting to draft another young guy.  I think the Browns go AJ McCarron for the same reason.

  19. I was thinking Dion Lewis. He's a free agent and would fit in really well with Shady. He'd be a great 1-2 punch and you could keep them on the field together since they are such great recievers. They are great friends and Lewis is from Albany, NY.

Great fit and obviously familiar with Daboll.

  20. Daboll is probably the guy McDermott wanted all along from the minute he was hired. There was probably no way Belicheat would let Daboll leave to go an AFC east rival, so when to Bama for a year to win a national championship and now he was free to go wherever he wanted. That's probably why this decision was made so quickly.
