  1. McCoy has 3 really impessive seasons and then every other season as a coordinator or coach has been under 22ppg. Those are the numbers. I don't know exactly how I feel about him but I like him more than Dennison.
  2. Yes and no. Some plays Hughes ran by Bortles and some plays Bortles ran away from Hughes. Especially in the second half.
  3. Read everything I said again. I never said anything about not wanting to get after the QB. I simply don't think McDermott is a high rolling, gamble and blitz everyone type of coach. He's going to play coverage and he's good at that. That said when you have good coverage you can get sacks. We should have had 3 or 4 Sunday. We need a disruptive DT to go along with and/or replace Kyle. Lawson isn't a big time pass rusher but would certainly benefit from that. Hughes is the one who you'd think would be quickest around the edge but Bortles was easily outrunning him. Kind of surprising.
  4. I think it all starts with what you said in that they never expected to make the playoffs or be remotely competitive. The gutted the WR corps and switched coordinators what did they reasonably expect out of the passing game? Then mid season they started "throwing things at the wall to see what sticks". They switched QB's back and forth and tried bringing in a WR who immediately got hurt. All that said if you basicaly have a gutted roster on offense and a coordinator who wasn't your first pick and didn't leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy about what he has to offer wouldn't this be the perfect time to bring in someone better. That said I'm not a large Mike McCoy fan either.
  5. I'm going to sound like a lunatic here so I'll put on my flame suit and begin. I think McDermott plays a coverage defense. To say he plays a defense that doesn't need a great pass rush would sound stupid I imagine but it's true. Now that is out of the way I can say who wouldn't want a better pass rush? I think we missed Dareous and I think a good defensive tackle will help the pass rush more than a pass rushing end. We need someone who can penetrate and/or collapse the pocket and chase the QB's out to the DE's.
  6. You give the defense and special team credit yet they gave up 100 yard kickoff for a TD and two 10 plus play drives in the second half. The offense wasn't capable of keeping it competitive? I just realized that I'm trying to debate such a ridiculous point. It's an offense that scored 104 points in 3 games against playoff competition. What team is going to win a SB if any phase of team play is awful? Is there a team that can play bad defense and special teams and just outscore everyone in a SB? To the original point, Roman is a good coordinator. As far as 2014 he had a bad year. Talent was still there, plenty of yards and general offense. They just had a collapse late in the season. Rushing TD's were way down and Vernon Davis seemingly fell of the face of the planet.
  7. If Thompson continues to develop and we bring him back, should be cheap, with KB we could have a poor man's Evans and Jackson like in TB. The thing we need is people behind them that can play because WRs always get hurt.
  8. You are right I don't think the back and forth helped anything but with that said Pettine had us top ten in defense and top 5 in passing defense with the 3-4 and largely the same people that Rex got after Schwartz. Maybe Thurman was horrible. I definately thought Rob Ryan was horrible, see the Saints, before he came over and Rex couldn't make an impact. How anyone with Mario, Dareus, Kyle, and Hughes coudn't get a pass rush is beyond me. I was hoping Ryan would bring Pettine in after he got done in Cleveland.
  9. You give credit to the defense for setting up the offense but somehow excuse the fact that they gave up 34 points in the first place. We were on the 1 yard line with 1st and goal Sunday. How many TD's did we score? I don't care where a team starts. I care about how many points the offense scores. Getting in the end zone is what it's all about. If the defense has stopped the Raven's all game and the offense only scored 3 points then you'd have something but that's not the case.
  10. If Gailey had brought in Pettine instead of Wannstedt he might still be a head coach.
  11. True. So I'm not sure how much credit he can get on the offense. Either way people constantly argue yards in a game where the scoreboard is what matters. With no established running back, a fairly old and not spectacular Flacco, and retreads at WR they still averaged basicaly 6 points, a TD, more than us. There are other offensive minds out there that make big impacts on thier teams or whatever teams they move to. We don't currently have one of those minds here.
  12. I'm honestly not sure. That could be the case except the same team had done reasonably well with the Jets just a season earlier. TBH I think Pettine did most of the heavy lifting for Rex in the Jets best seasons and Rex as actually a little better than mediocre without him. The biggest problem we had was stopping the run and Mario was all but laying down, Williams was hurt and Graham was a good man corner who they moved to safety.
  13. Roman's offense scored 31 in the SB with a chance to win it.
  14. This is where the Wannstedt move was key. We signed Mario. Moats, Carrington, Searcy, Dareus, and Williams all started and played for a number of years. Not all for us but enough that you can see other coordinators were able to get production out of them. Wannstedt really did an awful job. I think losing Searcy had a large effect of Rex later on. I feel like having two CB's at safety and Mario in give up mode is a large part of why Rex was so bad against the run.
  15. We scored 31 points, Taylor threw for 297 yards and 3 TD's and they fired Roman after we lost 37-31 to the Jets. Since then like I said earlier he took a Baltimore team and scored basically a TD more per game and there's no McCoy there and no one thinks Flacco is great. Roman might be the best system coach out there. He can use just about any QB provided they are athletic and can get mismatches both rushing and passing. Manuel posted two games over 250 yards passing in 2015 that we lost largely due to his interceptions and the fact we couldn't play defense. There's no doubt in my mind we would have scored well over 20 ppg with the same players if Roman was here. All that said we are a full season into Dennison. We don't have his QB, we don't have any sure fire healthy undisputed #1 pass catchers, and we have an o-line that is/was pretty nasty at run blocking but very iffy with pass blocking. I haven't liked Dennison's offenses even with a handful of superstars. I'm less than enthused about the prospects of him building a 24ppg offense with a rookie and no pass catchers.
  16. I trust McD. I believe there's a process. Dennison and Taylor is a no go. I'm not a Dennison fan at all. All that said I think things could get better than what we saw this year. I just think Dennison is to coordinators what everyone thinks Taylor is to QBs. If you are truly trying to build the best you are not going to start with Dennison. He can do better than he did this year though.
  17. KB and Thompson compliment each other well. You need a speed guy and a possession guy. It's not like Thompson will break the bank anyways. Zay can work in and get experience. Tate didn't help himself out and can go. Mathews isn't worth what he'd probably want to sign.
  18. In the best scenario with a pro bowl QB and pro bowl running back and possibly the best WR in the game at the time Dennison had one good season. He's only had two decent seasons in his whole career. Manning went from setting records for TD's to setting records for interceptions. If they are going to keep him we and lose Tyrod we'll probably finish in the bottom half of rushing even with Shady and will be doing well to score 22 to 24 ppg. I'd be rather happy if we manage 22 to 24 ppg with Dennison. It takes him half a season to adjust to his players and in some games he actually made things worse as the game went on with in game adjustments. It's not just a Buffalo thing. He's been less than stellar in most situations with far greater talent than he has here.
  19. Roman is an excellent coordinator in every respect. He doesn't do the modern throw all the time west coast stuff and so some people he isn't their cup of tea. He had Alex Smith/ Keapernick running a high scoring offense and he took Flacco and that gang of cast aways and scored a TD per game more than us. He is a throw back to the old Raiders where you run the ball, suck them in, and then throw it deep. Kill them over the middle with the TE. When you have Taylor, McCoy, and Watkins you get chunk plays and points. Smith was good at that and it fit Taylor well. I said a number of times last offseason if you get the right coach on defense he'll make everyone look better. I'm not going to get into a talent debate again but I will say that a different coach on offense would have done a better job of polishing the turds. Water under the bridge now. Hopefully they get a group of coaches and players that works.
  20. It actually isn't an either or, you can pick both. You can pick any which one you want regardless. I'm not defending Taylor to anyone here. Clearly something has to get better. I don't think they set out to make the offense better last offseason and it showed. Hopefully it's a priority this year.
  21. Without getting into a 400 post debate I'd have to simply say you clearly haven't looked at Dennison's track record. It's awful.
  22. In all his time as a coach I think Dennison has one, maybe two seasons that are even boarderline impressive and 6 or 7 that are mediocre to bad. Maybe if they bring Roman back I could see them keeping Taylor. Wouldn't hurt my feelings to see a new coordinator and a new QB.
  23. I'm not opposed to change I just try to see big picture. It's hard to upgrade everything but the secondary in one offseason. I see it a lot like Milano and Humber. Humber hasn't been awful but Milano brings a nice spark. Milano plays better and he ends up starting. When we have someone who's better than Brown get him in there. At one point it looked like that would be Raggland but look where we are now.
  24. This is what happens when you were planning on tanking all preseason long and then try to "build" a passing attack half way through the season. There's no Watkins, no Woods, no Hogan, no Goodwin, no Mathews, and a one legged Benjamin. There is no QB out there save maybe Rogers or Brady that were going to come here and lead a good passing attack. We played the BEST pass defense in the NFL today and we were not running the ball like a top 5 rushing team. Pretty sure Bortles outrushed McCoy. I'm not looking it up. They got what they payed for. I'm not a huge Dennison fan. TT can play better. We could draft a QB. There's a lot of work that can be done to get better. Let's hope they get to work.
  25. I think Preston has been been on the better side of serviceable. I have no problem with Brown. If you have better play them but if you don't you can still play defense with him.
