My first ever training camp report!
Dawgg replied to OCinBuffalo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Jason Peters -- one of the top 10 tackles in the NFL. Lee Evans -- NOT one of the top 10 receivers in the NFL. -
Peters may be willing to sit all season
Dawgg replied to scribo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't disagree -- but these guys have a very limited timeframe to cash in. When the players have the leverage, they have to use it, plain and simple. The Bills didn't take on a whole lot of risk in signing him. They were a rebuilding team and saw him as an athletic freak and added him to the roster for peanuts -- didn't have to waste a pick on him, didn't have to break the bank, nothing. The Bills gave him a tryout and Peters earned his way onto the team, beating out veterans and draft picks. Contrast that to a guy like McGahee, who they devoted a first round pick, paid him to rehabilitate, etc.. -
Julian Peterson has come close.

And if it weren't for Peters, the Bills would have a turnstyle at the most important position on offense aside from QB. It goes both ways... I certainly don't agree with the way Peters is going about it but this is a business and that's the reality of the situation. -

They "would" hold all the cards if they had any meaningful depth behind Peters. Since they don't, Peters does have some leverage even though he has 3 years left on his deal. The Bills have a number of investments in young players on offense that rely heavily on Jason Peters... make no mistake he has leverage. And, if Kirk Chambers lines up against Patrick Kerney in week 1, get ready for a disaster. -

While it would be nice if Peters took the same approach that Kyle Williams and Chris Kelsay showed, there's a key difference here. Williams and Kelsay SUCK. They better f**ing be team players and show up or they will be cast aside as the journeymen that they truly are. In any case, I agree with you that the best course of action the Bills can take at this point is to do nothing. Let him collect the fines and rot -- he has 3 years on his deal and he's not going to forgo his salary this year. If the front office were smart, they would have drafted some depth at tackle the last two years so that we would at least have some good, promising young players in the pipeline. If only... -
Peters angry with contrace? I doubt it.

I disagree. Signed, Aaron Schobel -
... shhhh... the folks here think he has already arrived as an elite player.

Wade Phillips already on the way out in Dallas
Dawgg replied to /dev/null's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That's what you think. Ask Turk Schonert sometime -- our QB coach today who was also QB coach under Wade. He'll tell you exactly what happened. -

That was hardly Wade's call. Our beloved owner is much more meddlesome than people think. -

Only you are dumb enough to consider the Jags' talent evaluation on offense on par with that of their defense. The Jags have boasted one of the most physical defenses in the league for a few years running. -

The Bills Big Ted in his prime, developed Pat Williams behind him and let Big Ted go when they had a younger, more athletic replacement in place. That was back when we had a good front office. The new regime let Pat Williams hit free agency without a new contract, watched Vince Willfork and Tommie Harris fall to their lap, and chose a speedy wide receiver. -

If the "tone" you're referring to is stating the facts, then I'm guilty as charged. McCargo has yet to fulfill his first round draft status... he has a great opportunity this season after some bad luck injuries and I look forward to seeing what he can do. -

And most people who watch this stuff for a living were convinced that passing on Reggie Bush was a stupid mistake. They also thought that Ricky Williams was a better draft pick for the Eagles than Donovan McNabb. They even listed Rob Johnson as the QB most likely to break out in 2001. I'll agree that he showed flashes last season. I'll also agree that he is a year behind because of injuries and the jury's still out. But I am not convinced he was a great college player... he benefited greatly playing on a line with Manny Lawson and Mario Williams. But you're right -- this is his year... let's see what he can do. No more excuses. -

Once upon a time, a guy named Rob Johnson was ranked #1 on a list similar to this, in July. Let's see what he does when the lights are on. -
Agreed on all counts. I just fight fire with fire, that's all Ultimately everyone wants the same result, they just have different ways of expressing it. I just don't think one particular way should be suppressed in favor of another.
-
Or, just be objective and call it as you see it. Contrary to what you believe, it doesn't make you any less of a fan -- it just means you're passionate about the product and have a different opinion on how it should be built.
-
Of course you enjoy it, as he rubs you down and relentlessly sucks up to you in the midst of your "debates" telling you how smart you are. Does that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside? ... and when, BADOL, arguably the best poster on this board, has an issue with your approach, perhaps you ought to look in the mirror for a change.

He made a few good plays... hardly dominating. Yes, that goal line stand was nice to see, but there was a lot more inconsistent play than anything else from him. The fact that he has yet to gain the confidence of the coaching staff after 2 years in the system is a bit of a head-scratcher. We'll see what he does this year, with no excuses. I'd be thrilled if his play is just average let alone dominating. -

Not necessarily, but it speaks to where the organization's commitment lies. And clearly, they were not committed to developing their passing game. The fact that they chose yet another running back in the first round this year is indicative of that. The top 4 rushing teams in the NFL ahead of the Titans: Minnesota, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, and the Giants. Their respective rankings in passing yards: 28, 17, 22, 21 -- hardly taking the league by storm. And if you really think they had a juggernaut rushing offense, you're mistaken. They averaged a whopping 3.9 yards per attempt, which ranks in the bottom third of the entire league. The Titans just happen to rush more often than anyone -- no wonder their passing stats are so poor in comparison, their offense is heavily skewed towards the rush. Absolutely, he has the benefit of a good defense -- but you have to ask yourself: did he make plays to win games? Absolutely. He led a number of come-from-behind wins and last minute drives that required the QB to make plays. So we're not exactly talking about Trent Dilfer here, whose team won despite him and not because of him. The Bills' defense was nowhere close to the Titans -- but I will say this. If the Bills' offense was efficient and was able to sustain drives, the defense would have been much better. To me, the telling stat is this: The Titans were #4 overall in Time of Possession per game, holding onto the ball for a whopping 32 minutes. The Bills, ranked near the bottom in that area, put a lot of undue stress on the defense. In any case, I never said he's great. I just find it ironic that the same folks who preach patience when evaluating either of the Bills' QBs are so quick to dismiss guys like Young and Vick who have actually won games in this league.
