    What did he said?

Jenkins didn’t hold back when describing Buffalo’s rookie quarterback in the wake of the Jets’ 27-23 win.

“He can throw the ball far… maybe not accurate,” Jenkins told two reporters in the winning locker room. “I don’t really like that guy. That guy was talking trash out there. Personally, I couldn’t care less about that guy.”

“He was feeling himself,” Jenkins said. “He was talking trash out there today.”

“He’s a good quarterback,” Jenkins said. “He’s good on his feet. He’s a definite threat running the ball.”

Those were the quotes on Allen. I don't care about that part, trash talk is part of the game.

We should have 2 or 3 more wins right now.  With every loss we climb higher in the draft order.  That's an upside to the losses.

Yesterday should be the end of Danny Crossman.  His record coming in from Detroit was abysmal.  It seems that his earlier successes in Carolina were the only reason he got the job.  He's earned a dismissal.  That's an upside too.

I root hard for a win every week.  I try to see the positives, but I also see next year as our big opportunity.  With a lot of cap space and draft picks, I trust that they will turn it around quickly.  We played a difficult schedule, and aside from some ridiculous games (Ravens, Bears, Chargers), we've been competitive.  Our defense looks very promising.

I think Josh Allen is going to be a superstar.  If they can build a good line in front of him and get him a star WR, it won't take long for the offense to catch up to the defense.

The draft is the key.  Look at last year's draft.  Cleveland drafting the DB from Ohio State instead of Chubb changed the entire draft for us.  It enabled us to only have to trade one of our first rounders (instead of both had we traded with Denver instead of Tampa), and as a result we were able to get Edmunds.  Fixture at MLB.  If we end up with a top 10 pick, this will give Beane flexibility to maneuver and get more picks.  Losing is winning.

Of course we want to win out, but an extra loss or two can be a good thing.  In the big picture.

Fire away.  I'll try not to take it personally.

    I'm optimistic because of Allen.

    I'm scared because of McDermott.

The Jets last drive in our territory with about two minutes left, Jets with 2 TOs he was waving his arms furiously for the refs to run the clock.

The clock was the least of their problems st that point. Just force the Jets into a 4th down and a FG try.

It sums up his clueless in in game situations and his ultra conservative mindset. He wants to get a lead and essentially run the ball while playing good defense until the clock runs out. That has to change as Allen develops and becomes a better QB.

What bothers me though is he was already good enough to win yesterday's game. That loss would sit perfectly fine with me if I felt like he had gotten those extra opportunities to make a play and wasn't able to. I don't care about that last INT on the last drive, things like that will happen to a young QB when they try to force it in that spot. But coaching for a FG twice there is tough to deal with.

I have usually been the first this season to point at the execution of the players that has been atrocious because we are under talented. But today there is a lot of specifics that you can blame on coaching:

Why didn't they send extra pressure at Darnold when he began to get comfortable in the 2nd half? I think I counted one blitz the whole half. Coaching.

Why did it take them so long to make any adjustment at all in the kicking game to the fact that they were getting abysmal gunner play and the Jets returner was gashing us? Coaching.

Why when 14-6 up with a 3rd and 3 deep in the redzone did we run a ridiculous gimmick play with Zay Jones passing? Coaching.

Why did we try and kick a long FG with an injured FG kicker? Coaching.

McDermott is the Head Coach. The coaching was awful yesterday. The buck stops with him. And I am a McDermott guy. I still support him. But when you have bad talent (we do) it is even more important the coaches put them in position to be the best versions of themselves. We didn't do that yesterday.

    It is incredibly frustrating.

I didn't mind the gimmick play, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. But the long FG with an injured kicker and the 2 runs on the second to last drive when Allen was pushing the ball really bothered me. He was playing for the FG, as he always does. This is not a coach that has the killer instinct to go for the throat.

There is so much Jauron on him, it's scary.

  5. From having an injured kicker go for a 54 yarder to the 2 runs on 1st and 2nd at the Jets 23 on the second to last drive...this conservative garbage is so incredibly frustrating. I just don't understand it. Is the point of the game to keep it close or to go for the win? Even when we're 4-8 the guy just won't go for it. Give Allen more than 1 shot on that set of downs to make a play. Stop playing for a field goal.

You can see this coming a mile away, sometime in the future if we make it back to the playoffs, his brutal gameday management and conservativeness is going to bite us hard at the end of a game.

The almighty Rams offense held to 6 points by an unreal Bears defense.

The unstoppable Chiefs offense taken to overtime by an extraordinary Ravens defense.

The exquisite Saints offense stuffed by the surprising Cowboys defense.

Maybe reports of the death of defenses were exaggerated, and maybe a defensive-minded coach can succeed.

This whole thing is taken so incredibly far out of context.

What myself and people had been saying before we drafted Allen is it's great to have an awesome defense...but it's not sustainable for long-term success if that's what you're building around without a franchise QB. It's incredibly tough to keep an elite defense for a prolonged amount of time, sometimes it doesn't even last more than a couple of years.

On the other hand...having a franchise QB can make you a perennial force. It is way easier to build a SB contending team long-term than it is if you build around a defense.

The Bears window with the defense is probably a couple of seasons, but they're going to start losing players. At that point when their defense comes down a level, they're going to have to depend on Trubisky or whoever the QB is to be running a pretty competent offense to compliment what will still probably be a good, but not great unit anymore.

There isn't a death of defenses...they just offer you a much smaller window than if you have a great offense led by a star QB.

McDermott's problem isn't that he's a defensive minded coach...it's that he's a horrific game manager and is way too conservative. He coaches to keep it close, not to win.

You don’t know if any draft picks are going to be good. I can say, with confidence, that Little and Pierschbacher will be starting in the NFL next year. You contradict yourself. You want proven linemen but you want them to add some in the draft. You are never going to find a proven player in the draft.

FA is where to get the OL this year. It is a solid group. Sign 2 guys (take your pick of any of the guys constantly mentioned) and go from there. If you are expecting them to keep Dawkins and get 7 new OL be prepared to be disappointed. You are looking at 2, maybe 3 guys turning over. They will sign a couple guys to play and then take a flier or 2 in the mid-rounds.

I feel like you don't read posts before you actually reply.

I literally said I want to get 2 proven O-lineman AND a couple in the draft. Proven would mean through FA/trade, and then supplement that with a couple of draft picks as well. I don't know how that turns into me wanting to find a proven player in the draft.

  8. 8 hours ago, Kirby Jackson said:

How many more do you want? He drafted 2 guys in Little and Pierschbacher that would start tomorrow. He took 3 others in the draft. You only carry 8-9 OL. He drafted 5!!!

It's not about the quantity. I want at least 2 proven guys to be brought in for next year, and at least a couple guys in the draft. You don't know that any of those draft picks are going to be good, and we can't have another season like this where the offense and a possible franchise QB is so derailed by a trash O-line. Right now we only have one legitimate starter in Dawkins, Teller we still have to see more of. I don't honestly know if anyone else is even worth keeping as depth, that's how bad they are.

I want to see how Allen progresses when he actually has a legitimate NFL offensive line in front of him and right now we're not even close.

Bills Still Have A Lot to Work On

So some old friends came to town Saturday to see their son play for Arizona against the UConn men.   They got me a ticket and I went to the game.  At 1:00 p.m.   I went to a sports bar after the game and caught the fourth quarter of the Bills’ loss to Dolphins.  I haven’t watched any video except a few highlights.  I haven’t even studied the stats.

In case you’re interested, Arizona won, but the UConn men are back!  Dan Hurley’s the new coach, and he’s for real.  The roster is the same but their game is TOTALLY different.  Don’t sleep on the Huskies.

How am I feeling about the Bills?   Great!   Why?  Because it’s all about the QB – everything else is just details, and I’m confident that McDermott and Beane will get the details straightened out over the next year or two.

It’s all about the QB, and – MAN – the guy can play!   Watching the Bills with Allen on the field is a completely different experience from watching the Bills any other time since Bledsoe left.  The whole offense looks better.   Six weeks ago my cousin told me Zay Jones would not make the roster of any other NFL team.   He isn’t saying that now.   Foster looks like a real receiver.  The pass protection is better.  Allen has made the whole team better.

I came away from the game with three important impressions, important at least to me:

    1.    I’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating:  McDermott is failing at his job in at least one big aspect, and that’s getting the penalties under control.  These guys are killing themselves with penalties.

    2.    I’ve been saying for weeks that Allen isn’t making rookie mistakes.  Well, the interception on the throw to Benjamin was a rookie mistake.   No way that Allen should have missed that defender.   Rookie mistakes are okay if (a) the guy making the mistake is a rookie and (b) he learns from them.   I hope Allen learned something.

    3.    Allen is a spectacular passer, but spectacular isn’t good enough if he isn’t consistent.  He can’t overthrow Foster on the deep ball, and he can’t underthrow Clay on the fourth down game winner.  He can’t be a star in the league if he doesn’t make those throws.

No one connects on every throw, and the overthrow of Foster was awfully close.   Brady, Brees and Rodgers might have overthrown him.  Still, gotta hit them.

Yes, Clay could have caught that ball to win the game, and I’m sure he said he should have caught it.   He’s caught balls like that before.   But that’s beside the point; that play was all on Allen.  Yes, he made an outstanding scramble to give himself time to make the throw – most QBs would have been sacked at some point on that play.   But then he turned into a rookie.  He had time – he’d run away from everyone, and he had plenty of time to get his body turned and his feet set, particularly important because he had been running left and now was throwing right.  And when he found Clay he could see that Clay was all alone with a lot of open space toward the sideline.   Allen had plenty of time to turn, set his feet and get the ball to Clay for an uncontested catch.  It was a long throw, to be sure – it traveled about 50 yards in the air, and to make it an easy catch for Clay it needed to go 55 maybe 60 yards.  Allen, properly set, can make that throw all day.

I think Allen let the moment beat him.   He knew he had it, but he didn’t have his emotions sufficiently under control to stop and make the play he should have.  Brady, Brees and Rodgers would have made it.  It was a rookie mistake.  It cost the Bills the game, and he knows it.

All I know is that watching the Bills is FUN again.  I’d forgotten how much fun it can be, after all those years of watching all those other teams with all those other quarterbacks.

I’m going to miss most of the Jets game, too, but I’ll be in Buffalo for the Lions.

    GO BILLS!!!

The Rockpile Review is written to share the passion we have for the Buffalo Bills. That passion was born in the Rockpile; its parents were everyday people of western New York who translated their dedication to a full day’s hard work and simple pleasures into love for a pro football team.

Good rundown, always like to read your review.

Definitely agree that it's fun to watch the Bills when Allen's out there. I'm in my late 20's and didn't start watching football until Flutie was around, so I've really never seen real quality QB play from the Bills. Hopefully he'll become more consistent, but I like that he has the ability to make all the throws and is a playmaker because this is a playmaker's league.

It's hard for me to get past everything with McDermott with his game/clock management, challenges, and penalties. I know you mentioned you only saw the 4th quarter, but he completely butchered the end of the first half by not using his timeouts when the Dolphins were inside our 10 with almost 2 minutes left. That would have given us over a minute on that last drive. On top of the penalties, he also had another terrible challenge which I believe someone mentioned brings him to 0-for-6 this year and 1-for-11 in his 2 years here now. Whatever his system is for whoever looks at these and tells him what to do is beyond horrific. And obviously the penalties have been out of control.

But yes, overall even after the rough loss as a Bills fan in general I was happy after this game because QB is the most important thing and we saw some really good things out of #7. And it was actually a fun game to watch!

Overall I like our coach.   He's obviously awful at challenges, (I think we've lost all 11 red flags except one) although that call isn't made directly from Sean, he has to approve whether or not to challenge.  He's hopefully learning to be a better game caller with clock management, play calls that match the clock situation and location on the field etc.   I think this stuff all comes with experience--he's not even through his second year--and we all know this year is about PATIENCE.

We're #2 in the league for penalties right now.  It seems like every special teams play we run there is going to be another yellow flag on somebody, and we've seen how some of these other penalties can change games very easily (yeah Jordan Phillips, you may have cost us that game fool).  Sean talks about discipline as a cornerstone of our team culture, but it's not translating to the field.  We have a lot of undisciplined play still, and it's costing us dearly.

Just take this week, channel some Marv Levy and put extra focus on special teams.  Listening to Steve Tasker on WGR yesterday he was out of his mind with the way special teams is being coached and played on this team.   From hitting McKenzie with TWO of our own guys on a punt return (game changer) to losing huge chunks of yards for blocks in the back, our special teams is a mess.  Get it fixed Sean.  Seriously, we have a legit punt/kick returner for the first time in a very long time and we can't even let the guy fair catch the ball much less legally block for him once he does.   This reflects directly on the coach and he gets a D grade from me, not just for this past game either.    (in honor of Tommy Boy, I'll give him a D plus)

Secondly, please cut ties with your Carolina past completely and release KBenjamin.   Everyone knows why, we all see the lack of effort, ineffectiveness.  It's not funny any more.  You aren't retaining him, we're developing a surprisingly good WR core here and all four of our WR's need to develop their chemistry with Josh.  Zay, McKenzie, Foster and even Deonte might win a spot in camp next year.  These guys are playing hard, getting separation, making plays and have a future with this team.  KB has none of that.

Send a message to the team and the fans that you practice what you preach and do what's best for the team always.

I agree with a lot of this.

Game and clock management are both about being conservative and unprepared. I've seen plenty of first or second year coaches do just fine with it, and I've seen plenty of veteran coaches that started out having problems with it and still do. This is a real problem with McDermott and he hasn't shown any signs of progressing with it. The second year coach thing isn't an excuse. I'm not sure he even realizes it's a problem, which if he doesn't, it's probably not going to get fixed.

The challenges are also a big issue. That's all about organizational skills and the system he's putting in place, which is obviously a horrific one. And one that's also spilled into year 2 now without getting any better. What concerns me is him saying "well, I can't always see all the plays from where I am" after the game. Yes, we know that. No coach can. That's why you need to put the right people in place to review those plays and tell you whether to challenge or not. It goes hand in hand with what i mentioned above...it's hard to tell if he knows where the problem lies, which explains why it hasn't been fixed and why it may not at all.

The whole KB thing is so contradictory to everything Beane and McDermott have been saying. This is why I had a lot of fun with McDermott's "culture over talent" nonsense. There is no way anyone can justify KB still being around if culture is actually a thing here.

The message that's really being sent is: Culture matters...unless we traded any kind of meaningful asset for you and you're making a little bit of money.

Brees will win, but I think Mahomes has a stronger case than people are giving him credit for. Having probably the best running game in the NFL is a huge help to Brees (though he's undeniably been incredible this year).

Anywho, I think Brees deserves it, and considering his age and the fact that he's never won, he'll get it barring a collapse down the stretch. But I think Mahomes means roughly as much to his team as Brees does to his. I'd probably go with Luck as a distant 3rd.

This is pretty much where I'm at. All things equal I'd probably go with Mahomes to this point but with the politics involved it'll be Brees.

Love the avatar by the way, I thought it was one of my favorites J-Fly for a second but I think that's CJ. Cuse bball has been bruuuutal to watch so far this season. I was expecting so much more on offense.

  12. 4 hours ago, BB@Shooter said:

For beginners I don't think he has accuracy problems. That is a myth that the media and casual observers chant. Do you actually watch other qbs who only have three years or less playing time? They are inconsistent at best. There are a few like Mahomes who were put in the right system with the right players who are strutting their stuff. As far as receivers getting better seperation, I suppose that is a little bit better from time to time, but even McDermott said yesterday that Allen is still having to put up with his receivers not getting seperation. For one, the receivers we are bringing in are players who have been cut from other teams or couldn't even beat out our own crappy receivers at the start of the year. Saying that, so what makes you think these receivers are anywhere near what other teams use to make their qbs preform better ? What does that say about their route running? Their understanding of our offense and the timing they have built up with Allen?

Sometimes it takes years for QB's to get on the same page as their receivers.  Even Brady struggled with new receivers earlier this year and the media flocked to his defense. And he is a guy who has been in the same system forever, is considered to be the greatest ever, throws quick passes that don't take long to develop, and has a better line and talent all around him. He also has an OC that knows him, that keeps him one step ahead of defenses most all times , and they have worked together forever. But anytime the Patriots miss one lineman or one leaves for free agency,  the media makes like it is the end of the dynasty. Do you think Josh Allen gets that kind of support from the media? That they justify a few bad passes and don't scream accuracy problems every time he throws a ball that doesn't hit a receiver in the chest? Why you and others are fixated on saying he has accuracy problems is lost on me.

When you watch the other two thirds of football games with teams who don't have qbs named Brady, Brees, Rivers, etc, you see guys who would be considered to have accuracy problems if you watched tape along side with Josh Allen. There is no difference between them and Allen as far as ball placement. The main difference if it really matters that much is Allen will have two or three that are not even close. And that right there is when people like you jump on it. But if another qb does it. It is overlooked as being a rookie , or a miscommunication. I could go on all day and address every one of your "opinions ". But this thread would be way longer than it already is. And when you accuse me of being incredibly vague,  I really have to laugh. One thing I am not is incredibly vague.

A few last things, I am not and don't have to be on a fishing expedition to catch anyone who is flipping on their opinion about Allen. They stand out on their own easily enough. It wouldn't be hard to go back to some of the posts they ranted on about Allen and how horrible he was. They didn't bother to give themselves an out like you do. So in effect, I don't have to catch anyone as I remember it quite clearly. Some of us have stayed the course and understood he is a rookie on a bad team. After one game everyone was saying the Bills might win 1 game all year. That is how bad the talent on the Bills is. I think if our veterans and veterans of other teams brag on Allen , it validates it enough in my mind that I don't feel the need to read "opinions" from wannabe GM's. This is basically a fan site that serves as a sounding board for a lot of guys who might have played jr. high football. Most are not even to the Al Bundy level of high school football.  I can at least say I played at a level above high school. And I have no real problem with guys hashing out football, that is what this site is for. Freedom of the press baby. But I will defend my opinion, just like what you do. After all, that is the fun part. My wife is the boss, so I don't get to talk sports as much as I like. Thus, the use of this board.  Sorry this got so long. Vague my butt. Lol.?

I'm getting the sense for what kind of poster you are, and it's one that pretty much argues within your own head. There hasn't been anywhere where I've contested this team's lack of talent on the offensive end from the O-line to the skill players, in fact I've had way more arguments about how much work there is to do on that end and my concerns for how little this regime has been able to accrue there around Allen after 2 offseasons. It's also why I'm not and have not at all at any time this year been fixated on what Allen's stats look like, because he doesn't have a real offense around him and this is really just about his development right now.

I do think there's a possible issue with accuracy but even there I've given him a break because of what he's working with. And who cares what the bottom two thirds of the QB's in the league are doing? Isn't the measuring stick for Allen ultimately going to be that top third? And before you argue against yourself, no I'm not saying Allen should be there already. The entire time I've talked about wanting to see more and how right now I'm just looking for progression. That's the whole point, it's you who's creating this scenario where I"m ripping on Allen for how "horrible" he is. And yes, saying his ball placement is on par with the bottom 2/3 of the league is vague, and doesn't really mean anything.

And again, you are fixated on this whole thing about flipping on players for a message board agenda. i don't have one. I don't need an "out". I'm watching Allen as I go without any preconceived notions because as I said, I didn't watch him for a second at Wyoming. And for someone who self-proclaims he doesn't need to read opinions from wannabe GM's...you certainly seem to care a lot about what's said. I played football in college myself, but I don't see how that's relevant. That was a way for you to try to pump yourself up as if it means your opinion here matters more. It doesn't. And it doesn't make you a better fan, thinking that way about yourself and by proxy the other people here just makes you the worst kind. I doubt your wife doesn't let you talk sports because she doesn't like them...it's probably because of the pompous way it comes out of your mouth.

  13. I just really hope he understands the heavy amount of work that needs to be done on the O-line. WR is a big need as well, but it won't mean anything unless we get some major upgrades on the line.

I'm a BPA guy for the draft so I agree with what he's saying there, as long as he's still able to make the significant moves needed on offense in other ways. Forcing it at positions you need is how EJ Manuel happens.

  14. I like Julio as a player, but WR's have a sharp decline when it happens and he's probably approaching that kind of wear and tear soon. I think this would most likely turn into maybe a really good year or two from him and then we end up having a deteriorating version of him or eat some dead money on the backend of the deal.

    • Thank you (+1) 1
  15. Well right now with this O-line and lack of weapons, he's gotta run. And I'll buy it when people say he bails too early sometimes because he's seen the pocket collapse so often.

My hope is if this front office actually bothers to get him any kind of protection, we'll see him stay in there more and throw the ball. But I agree his ability to gain yards on the ground is definitely a plus, and he did a better job this past game of not taking the abuse that can come with it. If he's smart about avoiding the hits it's a pretty sweet advantage we have for a QB to be a threat on the ground.
