Not enough Bills hate for their ineptitude against the Pats around here.

    THIS!

This organization could do something about the Pats. They just never do.

It's stranger to me that the Bills seem to get a pass here for what the Patriots have done for so long. The teams in the AFC East essentially handing the Pats an automatic bye and at least 1 home game in the playoffs every year has been a big part of how many SB's they've won.

The rest of the league's teams are managed by men who are predictable, pathologically fear change and don't trust their players whatsoever to grasp what the Patriots do. The NFL is filed with PROCESS guys.

    PROCESS is predictable.

How do you beat the Patriots?  Have one member of your film unit obsess and study them full time, especially if you're in the AFC.

You throw out every single play you ever ran this year and create brand new plays they've never seen before for their games.

At the half time of the game against the Patriots, you throw out the first half plans, and have new ones just for the second half.

The key to beating the Patriots is not letting them get tape on you and that requires a level of adaption these NFL coaches just can't handle.

That's why the Patriots own the NFL.  New England preys on the predictability of everyone else.

This is what scares me about McDermott and his conservative, predictable style. In some ways the "close" game in Buffalo against them this year worries me more than the one in NE where we just got obliterated in the trenches. While the score was close for a lot of that game...it was never in doubt. The Pats were in control all the way. If we ever do take the next step, I have my doubts that this coaching staff will be able to come up with innovative and adaptive schemes to compete with the big boys. We're almost going to have to have overwhelming talent that can withstand that to go far.

the over / under is 8 with today's roster based on how they exited the last quarter of the season; clearly it is 9 post-draft and FA as they are not losing anyone (other than Kyle) to FA this year who matters.  So its only gain in terms of next years roster vs the roster that performed well for the last 4 games.

I'd go play next years schedule with the current roster and probably win 8 games.  The only thing that happened bad this year was they needed about 3 or 4 more games to play....

Trust the Process.   Barring serious injuries to irreplaceable players like QB or half your o line  (which trashes any teams season) , next year is going to be great.

I don't think we're an 8 win team as it stands today. I think the 6.5 over/under is pretty fair with the current roster. The Bills certainly have an opportunity to plug their gaping holes with quality players but we'll see if they actually do it.

If anything, the Pats game at the end of the year showed how far we still have to go. They almost looked bored in that game and were in total control, especially dominating in the trenches on both sides.

Winning programs have far more stability in these key roles.  This is especially true with the GM, HC and QB.  It has been a long time since Buffalo started a season with such promise.

It's obviously only a good thing if it leads to winning. I definitely remember the continuity "logic" coming out of OBD when Jauron got year #4.

It's great if they end up being the right guys, but I think this year #3 is really going to tell the story on the GM and HC whether it's good or bad. I haven't made a big deal about the combined record for these 2 years because I did agree that a rebuild had to happen. But this is where we need to see the big leap.

And then goes on to get his team into the playoffs with a team devoid of talent, a QB who can't pass the ball, in the first year of a rebuild, breaking the longest playoff drought in professional sports.

I know 9-7 with a 1 and done playoff appearance hits the standard for a lot of people, but that's not ever going to be something that should actually move the needle. And I've never even blamed McDermott for the team's overall record in these 2 seasons. It's a rebuild on a team with holes, it would be unrealistic to expect the world so far. I would've judged him the same exact way if Dalton didn't complete that pass and we didn't make the playoffs, I wouldn't have taken anything away from him for that, just like I don't think that automatically wipes out anything negative about him.

So that being said...how does any of that change how bad he's been at managing games and in that instance, literally not knowing the implications of what the difference in a tie vs a win was for the team's playoff chances?

    December 10, 2017.

Week 14, Colts at Bills in the crazy snow game.

McDermott's decision to punt from the Colts' 41 yard line in OT, in a game where a tie was the equivalent of a loss in a tight playoff race--and McDermott didn't know it.

The decision to punt on 4th and 1, based on the available data, was straight up wrong.  On top of that, McDermott burned a timeout before the punt to think about it a little, in a situation where the TO was valuable.

But worst of all, the punt meant that the most likely outcome of the game was a tie.  When pressed on the issue the next day, McDermott said "I was thinking a win is better than a tie, and a tie is better than a loss".  He was clearly thinking about a tie when the punt was made and clearly thinking that was OK, if not the best outcome.

That was not OK, as we had to play NE in Week 16, and the only intelligent approach was to assume we lose that game.  We did lose that game as it turned out, 37-16.

Had we tied the Colts game, we would have ended up 8-7-1 at best (assuming the loss to NE) and that was not going to get us into the playoffs.  That has to be your thinking as HC of the Bills in that moment.  A tie had to be viewed as an unacceptable outcome.  It's actually a very easy decision to go for it on 4th and 1 in that situation.  Yet McDermott punted.

Of course, we did win the Colts game as it turned out and in fact made the playoffs!  Sometimes it really is better to be lucky than good.  Neither of those outcomes changes how bad McDermott's thinking was in the game, however.

The game showed me who McDermott is--an extremely conservative, traditional football guy, who is never going to outsmart Bill B. or any of the smartest coaches in the league.

The premise of this thread was to reference games where we knew the coach would never get us to the playoffs or possibly even a winning record.  That is obviously not my point here.  My point is the Snow Game showed me the caliber of McDermott's thinking and that it's not what I'd like it to be.  We can do better.

I mentioned the high-level and probably lazy version of this.  I had forgotten the timeout he had used before that too. Brutal.

But yeah, it's hard to see him ever being a guy that's going to outsmart a top coach. The hope with him will be that he'll be a good teacher and we'll have so much talent that it'll soften the blow of how bad a game manager he is.

We could definitely do better than McDermott, I think he's a dime a dozen guy.

I know it sucks to hear but it’s why players should only look out for themselves.  These guys are pieces of meat to fans and the teams.  They get rid of them the second they are not valuable.

I will say a know a bunch of former o and d linemen who lost a ton of weight after they were doing playing and skill players who went the opposite way.  But I don’t care how much they make. Nfl (and SeC) players are under paid.

Yeah it's why I never badmouth anyone who leaves a team or goes somewhere questionable for the money. They should go get all they can while they can.

I don't think it's "may" personally. Living in the DC area, I think it's pretty obvious just based on the attitudes around here that the Redskins will likely be extremely desperate to make a splash of some sort, whether that's trading for a guy like Antonio Brown or, more likely IMO, trying to move up to take Haskins, who brings triple value to the Redskins as:

    1. A legitimately good QB prospect (even if I think he's overrated)
    2. A cheap QB while they're stuck paying Alex Smith to not play football
    3. A local kid that can excite the fan base

Kyler Murray could be an option for them as well as he would undoubtedly bring excitement to the team, but I'm not sure they'll want to go that route after watching RGIII's leg fall off.

I hope...but they also may go the FA/cheap trade route with Foles or Flacco.

No don’t pay someone something that isn’t worth it, dont draft a third round player in the first round.  You know kind of like Whaley did with EJ.Don’t pay a guy 12-13 mil if he’s not worth it. You know kinda like Whaley did with Dareus and Clay.

I didn't like Whaley and hated the EJ pick and didn't like the Clay signing...but it's hard for me to kill him on Dareus. He was really good and at times dominant during those 2 years before the extension.

While this isn't the same kind of event, it kind of reminds during a fit of turbulence at OBD when Ralph Wilson, in a press conference, walked up to the mic and made a reference from a movie "If It's Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium."

One moment. One soundbite. One look. Everyone melts down that he's lost his mind and clearly something is wrong and "Oh, my god, he's no longer lucid!!"

Not sure what is going on with Gase, but it's unfortunate how the internet is piling on him. Huge day for him and his family and the Jets, and social media turned it into a joke.

Haha my favorite Ralph moments were when he hired Marv to be the GM or whatever fake title that was. He led off with a couple of jokes that nobody understood, it was dead quiet at the presser and then he made some comment about paying Tuesday for a hamburger today. I had no idea what was happening.

did you see that yesterday?  That's the Pats ACTUALLY TRYING to do their best coming out of the gate.

Against the Bills the Pats were cautious and waited for their opportunity to clinch the game easily and then laughed to the end of the games.

so 11-5 is not happening if they get pantsed by the Pats easily twice

Oh I totally agree, especially the game in NE was troubling because it looked like they were sleepwalking through it and it wasn't even competitive.

My point remains that next year isn't really year 3 of the rebuild. It is at most year 2. They did it a funky way year 1 but they got away with it and made the playoffs ending the drought. Then they embarked on the rebuild. They have to be better next year. They don't have to show they are a perennial contending type team.

This is one of the most ridiculous things that gets thrown around on this board sometimes. Yes, it is year 3. They did start the process in year 1, as they should have. And the Bills agreed they were still in the rebuilding process since they rightfully tore it down after 9-7 and a 1 and done with a team that didn't have a high ceiling. I don't know how that in any way wipes out a year of the process. The goal from Day 1 for any regime is to build a perennial legitimate contender...a mediocre season along the way shouldn't alleviate that expectation at all.

every year teams do a lot better and a lot worse than expected

the Pats means the Bills start 0-2, so getting to 11 wins is a lot harder compared to teams in a joke of a divisino

If we actually improve significantly, which should be expected in Year 3, the Pats shouldn't automatically mean we're starting 0-2. It would be a huge disappointment if we're not way more competitive in those games. People can say whatever about the score of especially that first game in Buffalo, but the Pats were in control that whole game. I never thought we were going to win. All of that needs to change.

If Lynn and that SD/LA group of softies go into Patriot Place and lay down they deserve to be flames. Predictable and foolish.

I've always thought that about the Chargers and basically always pick against them in the playoffs...but I do think this year's team is a little different. I think this group is tougher and will be up for the challenge in NE.
