  1. Totally agree about handguns. We focus on rifles because AR-15s look scary and are used in mass shootings. But those are a small fraction of overall gun deaths. As for straw purchases, they are generally done legally by people who can legally purchase a firearm. They then give or sell those guns to criminals who wouldn’t have been able to buy the guns themselves. Something like 60% of guns used in crimes in Chicago are from out of state, so this is pretty common. Here are some of the differences in gun laws between Illinois and Indiana: https://everytownresearch.org/rankings/compare/?states=IL%2CIN
  2. Then I have to suppose whatever media your consuming isn’t following the war. As far as I can tell, Western / NATO troops are not going to be part of the offensive. They are training the Ukrainians but are not in combat roles. There was a hubbub about NATO troops in Ukraine when those docs came out but to my recollection, they were there for embassy security, not to participate in combat.
  3. There has a been a lot of chatter about a spring offensive by Ukraine for months. While the details aren’t public, it’s widely assumed that it will happen.

  6. I gotta say, I love the title of this thread. It’s completely obvious that both Carlson and Lemon were fired, but admitting that would hurt the poor fragile egos of some people so they need to continue to pretend that it isn’t true and say “part ways” instead.
  7. I agree. Too many people have easy access to guns. I’m glad you agree we should tighten gun laws to prevent bad actors from getting access to firearms. I responded one hour after you asked the question but I guess that wasn’t convenient for your preferred political narrative so you have to pretend I didn’t say anything to continue to push your nonsense.

  10. Right, if we don’t get rid of the incentives that drive people to crime, no amount of “tough on crime” policies are going to fix the problem. You cannot expect that treating the symptoms will fix the underlying causes. So while it’s important to get criminals off the street, that’s not going to do anything to stop the next person from committing crimes.
  11. 1. It obviously matters where the guns come from. If you can stop them from coming in, you can reduce gun homicides 2. CPD’s clearance rate is pretty bad. Usually below 50% most years. 3. Stronger sentences are not much of a deterrent. If some kid is at the point where he has a gun and is about to pull the trigger, he’s not thinking if that means 25 years or more in jail. 4. If we do not also look at the root causes of crime, we’re not going to get anywhere. Making it harder for criminals to get guns is just one step.
  12. Well considering most of the guns that are used in crimes in Chicago come from out of state, it tells us two things: 1. The tighter gun laws in Chicago and Illinois make it difficult for criminals to get guns here. 2. If our neighboring states enacted tighter gun laws like ours, it would be even more difficult for criminals to get guns and reduce the number of gun crimes here. A single Indiana gun store sold 850 guns recovered from crime scenes in Chicago

  14. Ignorance must truly be bliss for you to be so committed to it.
  15. What are you even talking about? You appear to have so walled yourself off from what people on the left are talking about that you’ll just believe anything that makes them look bad. Yes, gun discussions are disproportionately about mass shootings because those are acute events with high amounts of trauma. But if you think Democrats aren’t talking about gang violence, suicides and other gun deaths, it’s because you simply aren’t paying attention or don’t want to know the truth because it’s inconvenient to your worldview. The right talks crap about Chicago all of the time like it’s a hellhole but then also assumes that Dems aren’t interested in solving gang violence? That’s an unbelievably stupid and logically incoherent belief.
  16. This is all just nonsense. You must truly live in a bubble if you believe this garbage. Just unbelievably dumb to believe something like this.
  17. No you won’t. There’s no amount “tough policing” that will stop this. That’s just lazy talk from fake tough guys. By the time some gang banger is pulling the trigger, they aren’t considering the legal consequences of their actions. They are literally risking their lives. You think they’re scared of prison? Maybe if we looked at the root causes of crime, we could prevent them from joining gangs in the first place.
  18. Well this is certainly a take. A dumb and wrong one, but it certainly is a take.

  23. It’s not a pivot. It’s the entire point. The sheer number and ease of access to firearms in this country leads to far more deaths than we see in comparable countries with more sensible approaches to guns.
  24. How many more people are shot or killed than in peer countries that don’t have so many firearms?
  25. Looks like it was a nutjob shooting off a gun in his yard. Neighbors asked him to stop, so he killed them. An armed society is one that solves arguments with bullets. Gunman Kills Five People in Texas Home, Authorities Say
