This has been on my mind a lot since my grandson forced me to watch the "Pro Bowl" competitions. My wife was there and said "Payton Manning is my favorite QB of all time, next to Jim Kelly" and I can dig that, I LOVED watching Manning play. But it got me to realize how much I miss watching him play. Along with guys like Kelly, Elway, Marino, Moon, Young, Montana, etc.
Many of us have been a Bills fan for a long time and we desperately want a Superbowl win, but are we cheating ourselves when it comes to Josh? I say this because I sat back and thought about how much I missed watching those guys play and it hit me, Josh just finished year 6, how many more do we have him? 6-8 More years is my guess so he might be halfway through his career already, and all we can do is talk Superbowl.
Maybe we are missing it? We have THE best QB (A pure generational QB) in the NFL and I think we want a Super bowl for us and him, so bad that we aren't just sitting back and enjoying watching him play, enjoying what we have. I plan on trying to just sit back each game and enjoy with my grandson watching Josh just sling the damn ball around the field, and hopefully, we get a title in the process.
Yes... all of this is true.
The problem is that even though I think Josh will be in the HOF, it's still always going to boil down to Super Bowls when the discussion boils down to "greatest of all time." Dan Marino was a generational QB, but because he never won a Lombardi, he's just another QB in the HOF. Same goes for Jim Kelly.
I would like for Josh to at least be in the realm of that discussion.
Peyton Manning is part of that discussion even though he was a shell of himself for one of his 2 Super Bowls.
Josh needs to get one. And I still firmly believe he'll get not just one, but at least 2.
As to your larger points, I think most of us actually understand what we're watching with Josh, but that's what makes the lack of Super Bowls hurt that much more. We understand how incredible he is, but he's not going to truly get the national recognition he deserves until he wins the Super Bowl or even gets to one. And yes, I think that national recognition matters just because of how special he clearly is.

Josh Allen was the best QB in the league last year when he didn't even have his best year. That's how big his potential is.
Josh Allen 2020 IMO is the best QB season in the last 5 years.
Josh was awesome this year. And just like 2021, he was spectacular in the playoffs, only to be let down by team and coaching.
In 2023 he suffered from incredibly bad luck as far as turnovers go and a horrible case of the dropsies by his receivers in the last 9 or 10 games of the season.

I'm not sure how Mahomes is indisputably the best but would have less success in Buffalo and Josh would have more success in KC... are you just saying that's how it stands because you can't prove your scenario?
I understand that it sounds paradoxical, but I actually think the idea that circumstance, system, surrounding personnel, etc. all play critical roles in what a QB becomes is pretty simple.
Mahomes is a better NFL QB than Josh.
In a vacuum, Josh is better than Mahomes.
All my opinion, of course.
Make sense?

You stated that Mahomes is a better QB than Allen. - "Josh Allen is not a better QB than Patrick Mahomes."
So in your QB swap scenario, where you think the Bills would be worse with Mahomes, he would still be a better QB than Allen.
No, that's not true

Huh….So if Josh were on the Chiefs and would have as many Superbowls, and the Bills would be worse with Mahomes, how does that make Mahomes better? Or is it that Mahomes just has better infrastructure around him? Tad confused.I think I was pretty clear with what I said.

I feel like pretty much everyone (other than Nick Wright) has come around on JA17 being a generational QB.
PFF hated him. Now they love him.
Aaron Schatz pre-2018-draft wrote scathing articles about him. He was the only person to give a 1st place vote for MVP for Allen.
I'm just frustrated for Allen more than I even am for myself--and I'm pretty freaking frustrated!!!
Josh Allen is not a better QB than Patrick Mahomes. But if the Bills drafted Patrick Mahomes in 2017 and the Chiefs drafted Josh Allen in 2018, I firmly believe the Chiefs would have won as many Super Bowls or more... I honestly think more. And I think the Bills would have been worse.
I realize that makes me a homer... but I hope you understand that I simultaneously believe that Patrick Mahomes is better than Josh and is inarguably the best QB in the NFL.
I just hope and pray as a frustrated WNYer and as one empathetic to the ultimate underdog in JA17 that in a decade that conversation is arguable.

it remains to be seen what actually happens with Diggs. I would prefer to keep him, but I highly doubt he actually wants to be here. We’ll see over the next 4 weeks what the plan is with him”where there’s smoke there’s fire”
if you’re telling me other teams are salivating about adding him and they still consider him elite…. then I should be able to acquire a 1st for him (even if I need to toss in a few picks) then I am doing that.
He has simply NOT made nearly enough of a difference in the playoffs.
Different situation of course, but KC didn’t hesitate to move Tyreek Hill when he didn’t want to be there due to $$$ and decrease in target share. And the result? They went to the next 2 SB’s
Can we stop with the releasing or trading Diggs talk already?
It's not happening. Diggs is gonna be Diggs for the media. I think he just likes making the media suffer. Unfortunately, it also means Bills fans suffer... but for him it's about the media, not Bills fans.
By all reports with the Bills beat reporters, he stuck around in the locker room and was one of the last to leave hanging out with the guys on locker room cleanout day and was in good spirits.
Diggs is guaranteed here next year and probably the year after, too.

I think the easiest move to start with is to cut both Harty & Hines. It immediately saves 8.7M. It's not like punts and returns happen that often anyway. Nor did Dorsey or Brady incorporate them into the offense to begin with. Draft a wr in the 4th or beyond who can also return.
Cut one. Paycut for the other to be our full time returner.
If we knew Hines were going to be healthy I'd prefer to keep him and cut Harty since we only have Cook on the roster at RB right now and I really just want an infusion of new blood in the WR room.
My bold prediction for next season as of this moment is that either Isabella or Hamler make the roster next season and actually contribute.

I don’t think very many people consider Jackson a better QB than Allen. Some just believe he had a better regular season. Primarily because Allen had a lot more interceptions and double the INT rate.Maybe... but I don't know. It's kinda my offseason resolution to stop listening to the national talking heads, but how many of them ever actually say that Josh is better?
None of them are afraid to consistently talk about Mahomes being the best QB in the NFL (and rightly so), but you don't really hear them separate that next tier of Elite QBs in Allen, Burrow & Lamar.
The only one who consistently does is that Bills Troll Nick Wright, who always has Lamar ahead of Allen

Don’t you think it’s a little disingenuous to compare stats from a 10 game sample to 6 games?None of these stats had any bearing on the MVP votes anyway.
So average it out if you want.
How about Passer Rating?
Josh Allen has a Passer Rating of exactly 100 in those 10 games.
Lamar's is 75.7.
And other people brought up MVP votes, I didn't. OP was more just a springboard for discussion.

Well, first, unless something goes wrong, Josh is in. They're letting a lot of guys in the HOF now, and by the end of his career, Josh is going to have pretty amazing numbers, where he ever wins a Super Bowl. A lot of TDs, a lot of yards passing and a lot of yards rushing. He's already 8th on the career rushing list, and it's not a stretch for him to get into Vick/Newton territory. And his passing number will blow those guys away.
The real problem is the MVP. It's just a weird popularity contest. I don't know who votes, but what's happened the last few years is about November the broadcasters all start speculating about who the MVP might be, naming a top 5, and somehow over the next month they drop names off the list, so that by the end of the season the announcers have built a consensus for one guy or another. As we saw this season, the announcers anointed Lamar before Josh and the Bills had a late season run - by early December they all were saying Lamar is the consensus choice. How can that make sense - it's a 17 game season, and a bunch of announcers decide who's going to be the MVP after 12 games.
Plus, of course, the MVP is a regular season award and not a playoff award.

Top two got nothing to do with individual play which makes the reasoning so *****. Who does most for his team should be top of the list. The NFL is ***** anyway.
I seen an interview today where the reporter asked Josh if the Pro Bowl was lame and he just kind of hummed and hawed and kind of dodged the question. Thought it was pretty funny
Agreed... but what Nolan is saying--and he's right--is that those are the things MVP voters value and in that order.
And we just have to understand and accept that it won't likely change.
10 minutes ago, oldmanfan said:MVP voting should not take place till the Super Bowl is done. As for Jackson vs. Allen, Jackson is not a big game QB. Teams shut him down in the playoffs and showcase his flaws. Allen plays big in big games, just has to get the rest of the team dialed in to get past KC.
Bottom line to me, Lamar keeps his team from getting a Lombardi, the team around him keeps Josh from the Lombardi.
I actually understand why they do it at the end of the regular season. The MVP would overwhelmingly always be the same as Super Bowl MVP.
Mahomes shouldn't have been league MVP this year and voters would have been biased by his postseason and would have given it to him.

Don't buy the premise that Lamar is guaranteed HoF.
We have done the chat about why he was MVP and the rights and wrongs of that to death.
Every other 2 time winner is in the HOF

Bruce Nolan agrees with you
He ranks the priorities for MVP voters in the following order:
#1- Most wins in Conference
#2- Most wins head to head against other MVP candidates
#3- QB efficiency
#4- Raw stats
7 years in a row that the MVP winner has been the best team in the AFC or NFC record wise.

Yeah... Greg is all but guaranteeing Diggs is on the team through the 2026 season because of how much we would still owe him if we released him before then.

I've become a terrible Cuse fan... what will it take for SU to get into the tourney??? Not even a bubble team right now.
-
Josh... 5-5 playoff record
2,723 yards passing
21 touchdowns
4 interceptions
563 yards rushing
5 rushing TDs .
Jackson... 2-4 playoff record
1,324 yards passing
6 touchdowns
6 interceptions
521 yards rushing
3 rushing TDs.
Lamar, sadly, pretty much ensured (somehow) he will be in the HOF as a 2 time League MVP.
Josh (somehow) still has work he's gotta do to be considered.
Discuss...

This offseason more than any offseason I think I'm going to avoid all those shows and stick to just Bills podcasts only. There's plenty of Bills-only content. I know some might view this to be myopic, but I think the national media ultimately has some sort of weird "Bills fatigue" because they've been expecting us to get over the hump for the last few years and we haven't.
So now, instead of looking at the NFL and rationally understanding that the Bills still have one of the best players in the NFL at the QB position (inarguably top 5, but I think he really sits alone at #2) and will always have a shot at hoisting a trophy, they decide that because we haven't done it, we'll never do it... so let's give some other fanbases time in the spotlight.
It's fine by me. With the dominance of the Chiefs in terms of Championships recently, I think they're just struggling for viewers and content.
-
Josh friggin carried the Bills on his back against the Chiefs.
While the Bills receivers couldn't catch the ball, Chiefs receivers like MVS who had been notorious during the season for dropping passes were actually catching them.
The Chiefs ran 47 plays total.
Josh Allen himself accounted for 51 plays for the Bills with 39 passes and 12 rushes.
Allen had more yards than Mahomes and more TDs than Mahomes.
It's really not Allen who has to fix anything. The team needs to get a better WR corps and Bass needs to get out of his own head.
Patrick Mahomes is the best QB in the NFL. Josh Allen is the 2nd best QB (and player) in the NFL.
And that's it. I think those 2 players are in a class of their own. And if the ball bounces for Buffalo a little better in the upcoming seasons, even that narrative might change.

I actually think this would be a good trade if the 2 teams would do it. New environment for both guys. Elam going to a team that plays mostly man. Burks going to a team with an Elite QB and a creative OC who can find ways to get him the ball in space.
