And what if the $300 worth of groceries are already half rotten, and you probably won't even get $25 worth of food out of it? Then you saved $25.

Except the Bills save 25 million next year they can spend else where. And the year after, and the year after.

That's not the way it works. You have to pay t either way. One way you get something for it, the other way you get nothing. People are acting like he's washed up like Von Miller when he posted top 7-13 stats in every receiving category last year. The non-logic people are using to justify this deal is hilarious.

Good point.  And with the potentially high 2nd round pick as well, the deal looks pretty good from a future (beyond 2024) perspective.

Good point? You'd have the player on the roster.

That's like saying you can save $300 you planned on spending on groceries by lighting $250 on fire and then just not eating. The math only works if you ignore what the values represent.

We will not see Diggs in a gold jacket in Canton, Ohio.

If Reed didn't play in 4 Super Bowls, he wouldn't have one either. He never even had back to back 1000 yard seasons, only had 4 ever and only hit 10 TDs once in his career. if he played today, he might not be a top 30 player. Meanwhile Diggs has 6 consecutive 1k seasons, 2 seasons of 10+ TDs in 7 fewer seasons.

Reed is near the top of the most overrated players of all time.

  4. Anyone that grades a pick an 'A' where one team gives up a top 7 player at their position, $30M in cap space and two day 3 picks to receive a future 2nd round pick in compensation is delusional. For that to be an A, you'd have to be talking a first round pick or multiple early day 2 picks and a prospect with no other compensation going back the other way.

Every single team in the NFL does this at some point with a big contract guy. Every single one.

It was either this off-season or next off-season when the Bills were unloading Diggs.

    End of story.

Or it could have been two seasons from now when his cap hit was meager.

This braintrust also has other great contracts on the books like Von Miller. You think it's the "end of the story?"

It's just the beginning, and it's not looking good.

why is everyone acting like we're taking an additional 31 million?  It's an additional 3-4 million hit.  That's it.

Because most people don't know how the cap works.

Or, it's because you still have to pay for the player you don't have anymore while going out and getting another one. It's money you flushed down the drain with no return. In other words, you could have had Diggs for free had you just kept him and it would have saved you $3m.

I disagree.  Diggs didn't do jack for nearly 13 consecutive weeks to end the season.   He wanted out and the Bills were wanting to move him.  A win for both parties.

The cap numbers are the cap numbers.  Buffalo is about to usher in a premiere rookie at a skill position.  I'm excited.

This is Beane and Brady's new vision for the offense.  The objective seems to be speed.

Premier? They're gonna be lucky to get the 5th best prospect. They have no pathway to any of the top 3 without giving up 2 firsts and 2 second round picks. Did you like the Sammy Watkins trade, because that'll pale in comparison to what they'll have to give up to get  "a premier prospect". Diggs was already a top 5-7 WR int he NFL.  You're gambling to get someone even better in the late first?|

    Great plan.

@BullBuchanan You don't have like it.  It's happening.

It's happening because Beane created a hole where there wasn't one. This is NOT something that should be celebrated. Diggs + a Draft pick wasn't the strongest argument for making this team better, but removing Diggs and replacing him with a late first round rookie, makes this team worse in the short term with 100% certainty.

Have no idea but I would imagine Beane has a plan here. They HAVE TO get a top WR now if they plan on competing for a Super Bowl this year

That's officially over. The window is slammed shut until at least 2026 now and that's if they draft a stud in the late first this year.

Beane will sign a big name receiver AND move up to grab another.

This is a GREAT GM making solid, thought out moves.

Allen has two windows.  The first is closed.  The second is being built on currently.

As much as I loved seeing Diggs' fire and competitiveness, this is a good move for the Bills.

    With what money?

Nobody said there weren't five other pass catchers. There are more than that, Diggs, Hollins, Samuel, Shakir, Kincaid, Knox, Cook and Ty Johnson. That's eight and it's ignoring the ones further back on the depth chart.

You said he'd be "a sixth passing option."

The question is whether there are five others who will be ahead of the first round draft pick. And that is unlikely, though possible. There's zero reason to think he won't be ahead of one or more of those five. If he is the sixth option, behind five others, it will look like a bad first year for that first rounder.

I said "a" sixth, not "the" sixth.

The reason I specifically chose that words and not any others, is because I don't see how anyone can believe that we're just another pass catcher away from being a super bowl team. It's not like we had a lack of wide open receivers on the final drive against KC when Allen drilled the ball in the dirt. It's not like one more receiver would have stopped Mahomes from driving the length of the field as time expires to beat us again.

Even if the receiver we draft is elite (huge assumption), what is your pathway for this to be a team that beats Kansas city while we've averaging an allowed points of 35.6 across our last 3 playoff meetings?

A key reason? No, probably not.

The injuries in the D-backfield and the D-line were bigger reasons.

Part of the problem? Yeah, fair enough. Our LB depth were JAGs. As is the LB depth on most teams.

While I agree the D was the major factor, any team with the amount of injuries we had last year would have had huge problems, as we did.

And there's absolutely ZERO reason whatsoever to think that a WR we choose in the first would be our sixth passing option. Nor to believe that choosing a WR is such a bad decision in the first that it would keep us from being competitive. The idea's ridiculous. On the other hand, if there is some good defender available in the first, picking him might make a ton of sense.

There are 5 reasons currently on the team.

There will be a 1st round grade WR there at 28, unless a bunch of trade-ups happen.

If the Bills pass on one of these guys for a player on defense heads need to roll.

I'm sick of the bs.  No excuses.

No it isn't.  The Bills need to come away with one of the top 5-6 WRs in the 1st round.

I really don't care if a bunch of "let's draft defense again" fans agree with me or not.

I was right about DK, I was right about Breece.  I'm right now.

metcalf was a 64th pick. Hall was 36th. Neither one went in the first round. I don't think folks here adamant against taking a WR in the 2nd.

Also, neither one has been a factor in making their team a contender, so despite being very good players, not sure it's a great argument for us to overinvest in one of them.

We didn’t move on because our offense struggled, stalled, at the 20 yard line, not because our defense failed.

Better draft a QB then, because there were multiple WRs open on that drive if that's your argument.

Yeah we should have gone with your idea and drafted Trenton Simpson in the 1st last year. Nevermind that he almost made it to our 3rd round pick. His 1 sack and 2 TFL on the season surely would have been the difference. Why he even played 61% of special teams snaps. If the rest of us weren't so clueless maybe we would have foreseen this elite production.

Oh, that's right, our deep linebacking pool definitely wasn't a key reason Josh was golfing again while other teams were playing for Super Bowls.

Simpson was learning behind absolute studs last year. Now that they let Queen walk, he'll have his shot this year. Meanwhile, Allen will once again be golfing next January if you get your wish and we get a 6th passing option for the offense instead of addressing the primary reason our team is not a serious SB contender.

and to my point: in your wildest dreams of his potential, you picked a guy with a paycheck between Jerry jeudy and Christian kirk

No, in my wildest dreams, he's Ed Reed. Just because I'm taking the best player that is also the most needed in the first, doesn't mean we take take WRs later. They can use every pick on receivers from the 3rd on as far as I'm concerned, though I would like to see us get depth LBs, a QB prospect and more secondary help there. I'll take this kid all day over the 6th best WR.

we passed on paying tons of very good and proven veteran safeties peanuts. Wasn’t a priority, so why spend our most valuable resource on one now?

go get a receiver or pass rusher that’s two to three times as costly in free agency

There wasn't a player like this in FA that's capable of being a Minkah Fitzpatrick type. IMO, that multi-faceted DB could put our defense over the edge.
