  1. For those who want the Bills to trade up (this includes me): It is in the Bills' best interest for the Broncos to win the Cousins sweepstakes. Elway has already stated that the #5 pick is up for grabs "depending how things play out in free agency". The 5 spot, obviously, will require less capital to obtain than the #2 or #3. Assuming Barkley and Chubb go in the top 5, that means two of the big four are guaranteed to be available at the 5th pick. So...Fingers crossed for Denver to get the job done.

  2. Haven't read all the replies, but I'm firmly against NOT addressing the quarterback position.

Every NFL roster has holes every single year. There is never a complete roster. The closest to "complete" that I have seen the Bills roster be was the first year of Rex Ryan's tenure. We had quality RB, WR, TE, O-line, Defensive personnel, special teams...and why didn't we win championships? Bad coaching sure, but also because we had NO QUALITY QUARTERBACK!

You can build and build and build your roster as much as you want, but until you have a franchise QB in place, you're just spinning your wheels. Furthermore, once you DO have a franchise QB in place, you can use the cap savings from a cheap 5-year QB contract to build the roster around him. This is the model that the Seahawks, Eagles, Rams, Chiefs, etc are using right now to great effect.

I am beyond sick of saying "wait til next year to get a QB!". If you're not going to draft a quarterback in a year in which there are five 1st round prospects, you have extra draft capital, and it's the first full offseason for a new coach/GM combination, then when ARE you going to draft a QB? I mean...enough already. Get me a QB. Fill in the blanks afterwords.

  3. !@#$ Jarvis Landry with a rusty spoon.

He can take his $16 million salary and his 4.76 40 time and run a pivot route straight to hell. I hate his Gatorade-jug bullying, frosted tips, diva antics, whiny ass nonsense. He's a total garbage person and he plays for a garbage franchise and I hope they stay together forever and finish 7-9 every year and that he only makes the Pro Bowl during the years that it's in Orlando ,because !@#$ Orlando too.

    And yes, I've been drinking.

  4. 1. Baker Mayfield -- if he were 2 inches taller, he'd be the slam dunk first overall pick in the draft. Will be the best of the bunch due to what's in his chest.
    2. Josh Rosen -- Mechanics, arm strength, intelligence. If he didn't have character/leadership concerns, he'd ALSO be in the discussion as slam dunk first overall pick.
    3. Lamar Jackson -- I'm much higher on his abilities as a quarterback than most. I'm also more confident that he'll make plays in the NFL than the guys listed below.
    4. Sam Darnold -- I like his intangibles, arm strength, mobility, and his accuracy MOST OF THE TIME. His wonky throwing motion and turnover-prone nature worry me.
    5. Josh Allen -- I absolutely HATE "perfect size, elite arm strength" prospects who can't actually, ya know, play quarterback. I hope the Bills stay far, far away.
    6. Mason Rudolph -- I like his deep ball and his frame. I'm not sure he'll have the mental processing ability or nuance to his game needed to be a quality pro.
    7. White/Lauletta/Falk -- Throw these three names in a hat. Pull one out. You've just landed yourself a quality 10-year backup.

  5. Mike did what he was supposed to do. Provide leadership, help with the culture change, block on passing downs, and chip in a few thundering runs throughout the year (remember when he trucked Lawrence Timmons out of his shoes in Miami?!

The problem, as another poster stated, was relying on him as RB2. He should have been RB3 and Williams should have been kept. I STILL can't figure out why they cut Williams.

  6. 1 minute ago, Buffalo Bills Detective said:

When he was eligible for the 2013 Draft, I remember posters on the old Bills Message Board pounding the table and screaming for the Bills to take him with the 8th pick.  One poster went so far as to say: "Take Tavon Austin at 8 and then trade back into the 1st for EJ Manuel."

hah. The Rams should NEVER have drafted him so high. It was silly. He's taller Roscoe Parrish. Second rounder all the way.

  7. I feel that Austin was misused just about his whole time with the Rams.

He spent much of his career in Jeff Fisher offenses, so that tells you a lot, as well.

To me, he should be used pretty much strictly on jet sweep actions, returns, and screens. See: Tyreek Hill.

He is not, never has been, and never WILL be a true WR. If you treat him as such and use him as I just mentioned instead, I think he can be productive for your offense.

  8. As time goes on, I warm up more and more to the idea of staying put at 21 and drafting Lamar Jackson. If the Bills aren't going to trade up to the top 5 for a Rosen or a Mayfield, then I hope they take Jackson.

Daboll can design an offense that will fit both Tyrod and Jackson's skillset. Tyrod -- who is already under contract for a reasonable amount and is a leader in the locker room and can get you to the playoffs -- starts until Jackson is good enough to take the job from him.

Yes, I realize the worst case scenario with Jackson is that he's a total bust and can't play quarterback in the NFL. But heck, that's the risk with ALL these guys, and they don't have even half of Jackson's pure athletic ability and upside.

If you're not going all out for a top 3 QB, stay put and take Jackson.

That quote makes me so happy. We got in the playoffs last year (?) but we weren’t a playoff team. It’s good to hear McDermott acknowledge that the cupboard isn’t full. I just feel like he gets the situation. But I’ll never understand what he was thinking last year when he passed on Mahomes. Bad decision imo.

In addition to wanting someone other than Whaley to do the quarterback selecting, I also think McDermott assumed that -- after all the roster purging they were doing -- they would likely have a pretty poor record and a top 10 pick in this year's draft. Everyone figured this year's draft crop at QB would be great. So not only did he probably want the future GM (not Whaley) doing the grocery shopping, he also probably figured he'd have "more money to spend" at the store.

And for what it's worth, I agree that it was pretty silly to not pick a QB last year. The only difference is that I wanted Watson.

  10. Someone showed me a graph recently that demonstrated Lotulolei's productivity in stopping the run. It has gone DOWN every year since he entered the league. He is trending in the wrong direction and is likely to command a large contract. Something about Dontari Poe doesn't sit well with me either. This would be his third team in less than 5 years. Something's not right there.

    I choose Bennie Logan.

My $100 to your $50 that the Bills draft either a DT or a LB.  Care to wager?  It’s a mock draft.  Our two biggest holes are DT and LB, yet he chooses to ignore both positions.  It doesn’t make sense.

I mean, why not just predict that we draft 2 safeties and 2 CBs.  We could trade Hyde, Poyer and Tre’Davious prior to the draft.  You ever know, it COULD happen.  He didn’t imply we are trading Glenn, yet we take a tackle.  We have two solid tackles.  Yet we have zero DTs or LBs.

my point is, he didn’t address either of our 2 biggest needs.  That usually means that they have no friggin clue.

Fair enough. In my opinion, every one of his picks was at a need position. We need a RT, C, CB, EDGE, and QB. They may not be the BIGGEST needs, but what if the value isn't there at those picks? Would you still prefer he plug a DT and LB into the mock just because those are the biggest needs?

I'm not saying the guy doing the mock isn't clueless about the Bills. He probably is. Most mock drafters are. But this whole "every pick made needs to fill a primary need" idea is off base. That's often not how drafts work, especially if the value isn't there. And once again, the positions he picked for the Bills ARE needs. And for the record, I too think the Bills will draft a defensive tackle and a linebacker. But my MAIN point was that if they identify and then trade up for and secure what they believe to be a franchise quarterback, the rest is gravy to me.

  12. For all the people saying "No DTs or LBs? GARBAGE!"

First...there's no way of saying this without knowing what the Bills do in free agency. What if they bring back Preston Brown and Kyle Williams and sign Bennie Logar or Star Lotulolei?

And more importantly: If the Bills move up and secure what they believe to be a franchise quarterback, then that's all that really matters to me. The rest will take care of itself. And in this example, they also have the Bills fortifying the offensive line with likely day one starters at RT and C. I'd be happy with this draft.

If the price is right, why not?

Would surely be kicking ourselves for not at least seeing what he's asking for if Poyer or Hyde go down next season for any significant amount of time.

Indeed. It's not a fun thing to talk about, but the Bills stayed remarkably healthy at key positions last year. If Hyde or Poyer went down, we'd have been looking at defensive snaps for Colt Anderson or Shamarko Thomas. And both of THOSE guys are set to be free agents!

Sign Coleman or Tre Boston to be the third safety. Whoever comes cheaper (probably Coleman). Then draft a guy late for that 4th safety/special teams spot, or bring back Thomas for vet minimum.

  14. I agree with others that Johnson probably gets less credit than he deserves from Bills fans.

He was quite good for most of the year as the nickel. Sure, he's gonna get torched by the Keenan Allens of the world, but who isn't?!

He's still in the prime of his career, likes playing for McDermott, is a perfect scheme fit, and is a feisty player that loves to tackle.

I'm absolutely in favor of the Bills signing him to a cheap deal, thus completing the starting CB trio, and then looking for further depth in the draft. If a drafted kid beats Johnson out straight up, then so be it.

Ian Rapoport ‏ Verified account @RapSheet 6m6 minutes ago More The #Bills signed former #Colts CB Vontae Davis to a 1-year worth $5M base, source said, with $3.5M of that guaranteed. The max he can earn is $8M.

Leavs Buffalo with ~$28.8M in cap space at the moment. Figure $8M of that will go to draft picks, so you've got ~$20M to spend on re-signings and UFAs

Reads like a 1 year, $3.5 million deal with incentives. If he starts 13+ games, that's a bargain, and is DEFINITELY less than Gaines is going to get on the open market.

Some more good numbers for tyrod

THESE are the stats I found most telling. They're Tyrod in a nutshell: Good enough to start, good enough to keep you in a game as long as your defense and running game are humming. Will make some spectacular plays with his legs and his arm....BUT....when it's crunch time, and the game hangs in the balance he's well below average. For that very reason, it is time for the Bills to turn the page once and for all.

I wish I could just send a screenshot of these stats to every clueless national media pundit who thinks Tyrod gets a raw deal or that Bills fans are crazy for wanting to move on from him.

  17. Kwame Cavil WR Texas

Was with the Bills during training camp in 2000 and maybe a bit beyond that. This was the beginning of my long history of latching on to "Training Camp Superstars" and projecting them for greatness. At 6'2 and 205 lbs, I thought he was a future star in the making. Turns out....not so much.

Apparently, he DID go on to have a long career in the CFL and won a Grey Cup in 2005. So there's that.
