  1. Unfortunately, it kind of looks like he may be.

It's a shame, because the Bills will be dealing him when his value is at its all time lowest.

I don't really understand the desire to trade away a quality, starting caliber tackle on a good contract. IF you feel like his health problems will be ongoing, then sure, I can see moving on. But we have no indication that that's the case. If he's slated to be fully healthy for 2018, I'd much rather keep him. Seems like Beane and McDermott think otherwise, though. The writing is on the wall with Cordy. They almost sent him to Seattle last year.

    Topic title:

Can we please bring in Cutty?  He recaptured some of that old magic last season, despite having a limited offseason with his new team.  He didn't have a team with the right skillset, KB is more a WR that he is used to, a jump ball guy.

Also, he had more TD's than TT last year.  He's an instant upgrade at QB AND is the perfect bridge for Rosen.

Because he's bad at playing football.

Dude, I find myself agreeing with you a whole lot, so extra belated welcome for coming here.

I have to think that the Bills have an in-principle deal in place. I really don't see anything else to explain it. Like you mentioned, they keep making deals by signing cut FA before free agency. They have, at this point,  six draft picks in the first 3 rounds. They just got rid of their bridge QB.

In my mind, nothing about this suggests that the Bills are content with waiting until 21 to take a QB. I think they like someone, and are willing to spend to take a chance on him.

There was a report out (unconfirmed of course) that the Giants were willing to deal for our two firsts in 2018, our first in 2019 and Glenn. If so, this makes perfect sense: we get a rookie QB without too many dire holes. We have enough cap space to pick up a few solid mid-level FAs on days 2 and 3 of the the FA carnival to reinforce the WR and LB group. 2nd and 3rd round is a great time to shore DTs, LBs and RT and C.

We turn over a decently prepared work in progress to a rookie, and see where your weaknesses are. Then, in 2019, a LOT of dead money comes free and the Bills are in the position to spend bigger to fill in the gaps. It's a structure pretty damn close to what the Eagles did in 2016 and 2017.

As far as I'm concerned, this is THE best way to build a roster in the 2018 NFL. Hit on a rookie QB, and you have him on a cheap contract for 4-5 years. During that time, you build the team around him and use your ample cap savings to fill out a deep and quality roster. Then, when QB is due for second contract, you have to cut some weight in various places to afford him, but that's okay, because by that point, said QB is theoretically a franchise player and is good enough to keep your team contending for a decade.

The Seahawks did it, the Rams did it, the Eagles did it. The Chiefs are about to do it.

The main thing that this plan's success is contingent upon, of course, is actually hitting on the QB you choose.

So, as you said: Get the QB this year, take a likely step back wins-wise next year (as Eagles and Rams did in year 1 with rookie QBs), but then in year two (2019, in this case)...look out. Culture established, QB procured, roster set up for success...and then here comes $90 million in cap space to really finish off the rebuild.

Exciting time to be a Bills fan.

  4. Based on what McDermott and Beane seem to like in a prospect -- and with this Bills team's emphasis on character, faith, "respecting the process", etc -- my guess is that Darnold and Allen are the QBs they like.

Now, if I had MY way, they'd draft Baker Mayfield.

But this Rosen stuff? To me, it's a smokescreen. Nothing about him seems to mesh with McDermott describes as the "DNA" they look for. Darnold and Allen fit the Bill (excuse the pun). I really, REALLY hope they don't take Allen, but that's a different story for a different day...

  5. This is an AMAZING job by Beane. Not ONLY did he get what is basically a late 2nd round pick for a QB they probably would have CUT....he also managed to trade Taylor BEFORE paying his $6 million roster bonus.

Just to be clear: Guys like Jarvis Landry, Robert Quinn, Alec Ogletree, Aqib Talib, and Marcus Peters are netting late round picks or even just SWAPS of picks in the same round. Tyrod Taylor -- who was pretty clearly not in the Bills' long term plans -- just netted the 65th overall pick. AND the Bills don't pay the bonus.

    Phenomenal.

  6. I agree that the Bills have a trade-up in principle OR feel confident in signing one of the top FA QBs. As OP said, there's no way they make the Tyrod trade without having a concrete plan in place.

With two 1sts, two 2nds, and two 3rds, not to mention their filling of roster holes before FA even starts...all signs point to a trade-up for a QB. If you STILL don't see these signs for what they are, I can't help you. It's gonna happen.

  7. Tyrod Taylor was exemplified everything you could ever want in a player off the field. Came in early, left late, provided excellent leadership, constantly worked to improved his craft, and worked hard at all times.

I will always be thankful for Taylor's efforts on the field for the city of Buffalo, for his quarterbacking the team to their first playoff appearance in 17 seasons, and for representing the Bills with class.

Good luck from here on out, Tyrod. I will root for you every single week...except for when you're playing the Bills!

.....I'm trolling, but ....you could have had that combo at 10 last year.....(Pat Mahomes)

    Mahomes doesn't have Jackson's athleticism/speed, Mayfield's moxie, or Rosen's brain.

    He's a talented prospect, but let's not pretend he's a "can't miss", Superman prospect. He's not.

  9. "I like the depth of the draft, especially early on in those rounds," he told the Bills' official radio program last week. "I'm excited to have five picks [in the first three rounds]. So I'm not going in, right now as I sit here, saying we got to move up or we got to move back.

"I'm excited at 21 and 22 because it showed we made the playoffs, and that was big for our city and our team and the culture that Sean and I are building. So I have no intent to move up or down. We're focused right now on who we think we could get at that value."

See those bolded areas? Those are qualifiers. Notice that in BOTH sentences he left the wiggle room of "this is how I feel RIGHT NOW". I would not in any way, shape, or form conclude that this statement indicates that the Bills won't move around the board.

  10. In the short term, it'll be great. Talib/Peters duo in a Wade Philips defense should be scary.

In the long term, I can't help but dislike all the draft picks Snead is sending away. At some point, even when your roster is as talented as theirs, you've got to keep some picks and draft depth. Also, trading for a bunch of talented PLAYERS does not guarantee you a good TEAM. The recent "Dream Team Eagles" showed us that. I mean, if a team is trading away a player, there must be a reason why.

    Snead reminds me of Whaley.

I can’t help but believe they are making these signing at positions of need because they are going to package picks to move up in the draft.

This signing has no barring on any future plans. It is a camp body and will not change the draft or future FA plans. No one  is getting cut because we signed this guy.

I think Jamie is right. Signing three players at positions of need (CB2, RB2, DE depth/special teams player), all of whom don't count against the Bills in compensatory pick formula, spells a trade-up. Read this:

    https://www.cover1.net/early-buffalo-bills-free-agent-moves-are-evidence-that-the-team-is-serious-about-trading-up-in-2018-nfl-draft/

    I agree with it.

Everyone is saying "camp body, vet minimum guy, means nothing". I agree with points one and two, and the idea that Odighizuwa is not guaranteed a roster spot. But if you look at the overall strategy the Bills seem to be employing right now, it sure SEEMS like they plan to trade up.

  12. The other factor is that it seems like McDermott and Beane are not at all afraid to be bold. This can not be overstated.

They walked in and traded away Sammy Watkins, Ronald Darby, Marcell Dareus, and Reggie Regland, and let Gilmore, Gillislee, both safeties, and Zach Brown walk away. That's a CRAZY thing to walk in and do. They didn't care. They did it and they were right to do it. Fast forward to the end of the season: they fired their offensive coordinator despite making the playoffs for the first time in 17 years because they knew they could do better. Bold moves.

To me, it all adds up to them not being afraid to go bold for a QB. Recent history shows it's often necessary to do so. If McDermott is as good as we think/hope, the Bills won't be picking in the top 5 or 10 picks very often. They're going to have to trade up there eventually. Might as well do it in a year where they have 4 of the first 64 picks!
