The buzz has been all about Allen but there are several media folks that have maintained that the Bills have had their sights set on Darnold since early last year.

When you look at all the QB prospects and try to find the best match for the Bills, it's Darnold. Not exactly because of the type of athlete he is or how he plays the position but because of how he carries himself and his attitude.

Rosen is a good kid, but he may challenge coaches and some coaches won't like that.

Mayfield is also a good kid, but some probably feel like he might be a bit of a loose cannon.

Allen is all potential at this point and I don't think the Bills wanna take the risk with him.

Darnold needs work, sure. But of the top four guys, he's the one that has natural leadership ability, maturity beyond his years, an understanding of how to present himself to the media as the face of a franchise, and overall he seems to have this very easy-going vibe to him where it seems like no amount of pressure can get to him. Put those things together with "the process" and it makes sense that Darnold is their top target.

I agree with all of this. Good post.

When I ask myself "Who would Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane -- with all of their emphasis on hard work, the process, faith, leadership, etc -- want leading their team?"...I keep coming up with the same answer: Sam Darnold or Josh Allen. The only thing is, I'm not entirely convinced they like what Allen brings to the table in terms of skillset. Just last year, they jettisoned a big-armed guy (Jones) in favor of Nathan Peterman. If you look at the two QBs on the roster right now, what do you see? Guys who don't have the biggest arms, but who are accurate, can play from the pocket, and have exceptional character. Darnold just "fits the Bill", so to speak. I just can't imagine McDermott wanting Rosen or Mayfield as the leaders/tone setters for their team.

  2. Here is one thing I DO Believe: Darnold is #1 on the Bills' board and has been for a long time.

I also believe that the reason the Bills and Giants are waiting to pull the trigger on a trade is that they're waiting to see what the Browns do at 1. If the Browns take Allen, the Bills will trade up to 2 and take Darnold. If the Browns take Darnold at 1, the Bills move on to plan B, which likely involves trading up to the 4-6 range for Rosen or Allen.

I think Darnold screams "Bills DNA" (whatever that means), and they'll do everything they can to get him if possible.

That's a reasonable post.  I certainly understand the skepticism.  Let me see if I can explain it a different way.  He shows up in 2016- they had been a lousy program for a while and were 2-10 the year before- and takes the conference by storm.  Here's this guy, who's 6'5" with an absolute cannon, running people over, beating a ranked Boise State team, beating a ranked San Diego State team, en route to a Mountain West Championship game- out of NOWHERE.  Every game he plays in, he's all the talk from the announcers, he's the biggest guy on the field- he's almost like a man amongst boys out there.  Literally the ONLY thing you would've liked to see different in 2016 from a stats standpoint is fewer INT's (he threw five in the season opener, his first game, at Nebraska) and a better completion % (I have gone over that part ad nauseam).  Believe me when I tell you that, following the 2016 season, Josh Allen being thrown around as the #1 or 2 pick in the draft by MOST people was 1000% absolutely warranted.  For a first year starter, with those tools, with all the highlight plays he made, taking over a 2-10 program and having that type of season- no one was questioning the hype whatsoever.  No one.  He had a great season.  Period.  The trajectory he was on after the 2016 season was absolutely pointing toward him being the guy.

As far as 2017, I've said all that I can say.  I knew his numbers would regress.  If he had all those guys back, his numbers would've improved and he would've firmly cemented himself as the #1 guy in the draft.  Alas, they didn't and he is viewed as a question mark by many.  I totally get how you might look at his numbers in 2017 and say, "how can a guy put up THOSE type of numbers in the Mountain West Conference and be viewed as a top pick?"  I totally get it.  I would argue that there's way more to it than that.  He did NOT get worse at football.  The difference in the talent he had in 2016 vs. 2017 CANNOT be overstated.  If you believe that Josh Rosen would've tore up the MWC with Allen's supporting cast last season, feel free to believe that.  I don't believe he would have.

All this being said, I still think Allen needs a year and would be best-suited going to the Steelers or the Chargers and I wouldn't be shocked whatsoever if he slips in the draft.  But to suggest that he "wasn't good in college" is simply not true.  He was REALLY good in 2016.  REALLY good.  And, again, look at what happened when he went out of the lineup in 2017!  He was 8-3 last year- 8-1 against non-power 5 teams.  I digress.

P.S. Not sure where you're going with the "between the ears" thing.  He is coachable, likeable, has an excellent attitude and scored the highest on the wonderlic of all the QB's at the combine.

By "between the ears", I was not referring to his coachability or likability. Everyone says he's a coach's dream and I have no reason not to believe that.

His mental processing, ability to anticipate receivers coming open, and his lack of willingness to throw with anticipation into tight windows are what scare me. Brain stuff.

At the end of the day, the following graphic is deeply discouraging to me:

I just don't see him suddenly completing >60% of his passes just because he's surrounded by better talent. I'm sure you've read the recent article suggesting that a player's statistical college production is more likely to represent his ceiling than his floor. That's my fear. That Allen's ceiling is about a 58% completion rate. No amount of Jordan Palmer offseason footwork drills are getting me to buy in to the idea that Allen will vastly improve on those numbers, and those numbers aren't NFL caliber.

People who say that Josh Allen "stunk in college."  For at least the 30th time, HE WAS VERY GOOD IN 2016.  No animosity intended.  In all seriousness, check out the thread I started re: Allen to read more about him.

I was kidding with the "What do you mean YOU PEOPLE?" remark.

I was not kidding that my opinion is that Allen stinks. I also respect and appreciate your contrary opinion. I have already read and quite enjoyed your Allen thread. I have also watched every "all throws" video I can find on Youtube, because part of me thinks the Bills really like him, and I'm trying to get myself mentally ready.

He makes anywhere from 2-5 "WOW" throws per game. But everything in between those "WOW" throws -- the misfires of simple swing routes and screens, bailing out of pocket due to phantom pressure, failure to keep the offense "on schedule" much of the time, misfiring on seam routes and overthrowing would-be TDs, boneheaded "WHAT WAS HE THINKING?!" interceptions -- concerns me very much. Of all the QBs, I feel like I've watched and read about Allen the MOST, even though I like him the least. I've watched and read about him BECAUSE I don't understand why he is a candidate to be a top five pick. It's so strange to me that a guy who completed less than 60% of his passes in high school, failed to garner any major college offers in two separate recruiting campaigns (despite THAT arm and THOSE physical tools), didn't blow away the competition in the Mountain West, and failed to complete 60% of his passes again at Wyoming...is somehow a top five candidate. I can see his off-the-charts physical gifts, I can see that the skill position players and offensive line around him in 2017 stunk, I can see that he makes some jaw-dropping throws...but all of that doesn't add up to an NFL projection I feel comfortable with. Physical gifts and "Want-to" alone won't do it. I fear he doesn't have what it takes between the ears. That's my opinion. I respect that yours is different and all that really matters is that we'll find out what Beane and McDermott's opinion is on the matter in one week.

  5. Have you just not been around on the forums for the past 3 months? It's been discussed nonstop over that entire period.

And no one "hates" him, there are just plenty of people who think he's gonna stink at playing quarterback in the NFL. The usual reason given is that, well, he stunk at playing quarterback in high school and college.

  6. My favorite current Bill is also my favorite all time Bill: Kyle Williams.

A close second for me was Eric Wood. Within the span of two seasons, I may well see BOTH of my favorite Bills retire.

Who's up next? With any luck, the dude in my avatar pic will ball out and make it an easy decision. Lord knows the Bills could use the pass rush boost.

  7. On the one hand, I'd really rather see the Bills take a Mike Linebacker at 22 than a center. We get our quarterback for the offense, we need our quarterback for the defense. We could still potentially get Ragnow or Price in the 2nd round.

On the other hand, if they get Josh Rosen, I really couldn't fault them at all for pairing him with a blue chip center prospect. Arguably THE top priority once you get a franchise QB is to keep him upright and healthy and to ensure you don't retard his development with shoddy o-line play....even if it means your defense stinks for a year.

Either way, landing Rosen would make the draft a success almost regardless of who else gets picked.

  8. I think that anyone that gives much credence to the notion of an (extremely rare) 3-way trade and the Bills ending up with the #1 pick is setting himself up for disappointment.

I find it quite likely that the Bills will ultimately trade up and select a quarterback. It find it highly UNlikely that it will come the form of what's being discussed by Bucky Brooks. If it turns out to be true, I'll eat my hat.

  9. This has already been stated a few times in this thread, but I think it's an important notion to remember, and I think it's fully accurate:

Head coaches often sink or swim based on the success or failure of the quarterback they draft. I believe very strongly that McDermott knew that Whaley was out after that draft and that the Bills would be turning over basically their entire scouting department. I also believe that McDermott wanted to come in and begin turning over the roster and setting up the culture that he envisioned his locker room having. He didn't know what he had, and being the thorough, meticulous guy that he is, he wanted to make darn sure that the QB he already had in-house (Taylor) wasn't going to be "The guy", and he wanted to take the pulse of his team. Year 1? Set up the culture you want, feel out the team, see what you have in the guys already on your roster. Year 2? The new GM and scouting department are in place, we've seen that our current QB isn't the guy, let's go take a shot at a franchise QB.

The question of whether or not this was the right strategy won't be answered for a few more seasons. We have to see what becomes of Mahomes and Watson, and we have to see what becomes of the guy the Bills draft this year. Even if both Mahomes and Watson are successful, the Bills' move could still ALSO be considered successful, so long as the guy they pick this year pans out. We just won't know for a little while. Me, personally? I really wanted the Bills to draft Watson last year. Despite everything I just said, it seemed obvious to me that his personality/leadership was a fit for Sean McDermott. Had we taken him and sat him for a year behind Tyrod, we might be in great shape this year, and could spend our full trove of picks on good players to surround Watson with. Oh well, what's done is done. Here's hoping Beane and co get it right this year!

  10. In one sense, I just can't wait for the draft to get here. The anticipation is killing me at this point.

In another sense, the waiting is the most enjoyable part. Once the draft happens, there's a two and a half month void before football starts again. All of this speculation and guessing is fun. ESPECIALLY for this draft. I can't remember a more important, wide open, fun Bills draft season in the past 20 years.

    10 days.

You response confuses me. You like him, but you think he's going to be there in the 5th? Not a chance. He's being projected as a day 2 pick.

Meh. NFL evaluators are still cavemen in a lot of ways. I'll believe them drafting a one-handed player on the second day when I see it. Until then, I'll stick with my 5th round projection.

  12. To anyone asking "is he a good football player?" or "is this anything more than a feel-good story?"...

The answers are "yes" and "yes".

He is fast. Like really, really fast. A 4.38 forty is bananas for a linebacker. He also had quality production at USF, and was unanimously cited as an excellent locker room guy, a guy who gets his teammates fired up and inspired to work hard.

I'm not gonna go overboard and say they should draft him in the first few rounds, but if he's there in round 5, I'd take him 100%.

  13. Just wanted to chime in and say that I thought the booking for Wrestelmania was terrible. The Rousey match should have gone on last. Reigns-Lesnar as the curtain closer? Why? And why punt on giving Reigns the title AGAIN?

Why bother with the whole Taker/Cena squash sequence? Why have both world champions retain the title at Wrestlemania, of all events? Why such a short allotment of time for the Tag Title matches?

The lineup of matches was great. The booking stunk.

Oh, and the Styles - Nakamura match was a huge disappointment. They hyped it as potentially one of the best WM matches of all time, and these guys certainly have the talent to have made that hype a reality. But boy oh boy, did they fall short. The heel turn for Shinsuke was great, and they're clearly planning on a long program for he and Styles. Hopefully the coming matches far exceed this one.

One last thing...Finn Balor is being underused, in my opinion. His whole Jekyll and Hyde thing -- where sometimes he's a clean cut babyface and an LGBTQ advocate and sometimes he "brings out the demon" -- is awesome. He should be higher up the card.

Can't wait to see Daniel Bryan mix it up with Nakamura, Balor, Owens/Zayn, etc in the coming months.

Trying to turn attention away from maybe, sometimes, a little bit current Bills player Richie Incognito's lunacy via former Bills player Sammy Watkins huh?

I see what you did there.

What do I care whether there is attention on Richie or not? I'm not a Bills employee.

As far as I'm concerned, there's enough room in the world for ALL the crazy football players. And lately, there seem to be quite a few of them!

  15. Lawson is going into a true make or break year. 2018 will decide whether he remains a Buffalo Bill for the long haul or whether he's looking for work in 2019. I'm rooting for the former (because a boost at EDGE would be a huge help) but banking on the latter.

Meanwhile, the dude in my avatar pic is about to light it up and become an instant fan favorite.
