  1. “People call you and they want the second pick of the draft for a bag of donuts, a hot pretzel and a hot dog. Leave me alone. I don’t have time to screw around.”

—Giants GM Dave Gettleman, with what was actually The Quote of The 2018 Draft.

Based on the above quote, the quote from Beane about liking multiple quarterbacks, and other quotes by Beane about not wanting to give up next year's 1st and that kind of being a deal breaker....I can't help but wonder if Beane wanted to get up to 2 but lowballed the Giants. I also can't help but wonder how much Gettleman was asking for.

Now before we go any further: Yes, I fully realize the point is moot now, because the draft is over and done with. Nevertheless, it's a long few months until training camp starts, and we need SOMETHING to talk about, and this was a historically significant draft for the Bills, in that it will shape the next 5-15 years of their future.

So hypothetically, what's the most YOU would've given up to move to the 2 spot once it was known that Darnold would be available? This, of course, assumes that you like Darnold significantly more than Allen. Would you give up both of this year's 1sts, two 2nds, and a 3rd? What about a 1st, 2nd, and two 3rds this year, and a 1st next year? If it meant having Darnold, what would YOU have offered if you were Beane? Was this a matter of the 2nd overall pick truly being available for the right price, but Beane not being willing to pay?

Just thought it was an interesting "franchise crossroads" moment that maybe took place on Thursday.

I think Alexander will see the field more as a pass rushing DE, rotating with that unit a lot.

I don't disagree. However, right now, the cupboard at the strong side linebacker spot is pretty bare. If you take Alexander away, I'm not sure who you have starting in that role. Humber? He played weakside last year. Tanner Vallejo? He's listed as an ILB currently. Stay tuned for a free agent addition at that position.

Everyone seems really high on the Bills defense but I've yet to see anyone list our starting eleven in a 4-3 base defense?

    DE - Jerry Hughes
    DT - Star Lotulelei
    DT - Kyle Willams
    DE - Trent Murphy

    OLB - Matt Milano
    ILB - Tremaine Edmunds
    OLB - Lorenzo Alexander

    CB - Tre'Davious White
    FS - Micah Hyde
    SS - Jordan Poyer
    CB - Vontae Davis

Personally, I think that's a pretty good base D. Lotulelei will eat up double teams, which should have a trickle-down effect on the rest of our defense. Edmunds should elevate the defense, if all goes well, the same way that Kuechly massively elevates the Panthers defense.

Keep in mind, though, that the Bills are likely to be in a nickle look more often than a 4-3 base. In that case, drop Alexander and add in  Taron Johnson or Phillip Gaines.

well now....by this narrative Mr Allen would be brought in by game 6-7....which infers to me failure of likely AJ McCarron/Nathan Peterman...whomever is starter, so Josh Allen somehow is offered the starting job......wouldn't it matter WHY the other QBs failed and would they be throwing him to the wolves...I doubt highly Mr Allen will be a starter in 2018  I don't care how many losses the other 2 rack up tbh... if the line doesn't hold up do not I repeat DO NOT put him in there to be killed...just sayin.....2019 will be the optimal year in my opinion. ....

I'm only saying that if he's clearly playing better in camp and preseason than the other two quarterbacks, you can't keep him on the bench, even if you would like to do so in an ideal world. Like coach McDermott said: "It wouldn't be fair to the other 52 guys".

All of that being said, the best possible scenario, in my opinion, would be McCarron or Peterman playing so well and winning enough games that Allen can't even get onto the field. That would be fantastic. But what if the Bills get off to a 2-5 start and the season looks lost? Wouldn't you rather get Allen live game reps than plod along to 4-12 behind AJ or Nate?

The other thing that I always think: Aside from Aaron Rodgers, who was the last quarterback who sat a full season and went on to be good? I can't think of anybody. Sometimes, guys don't learn from the bench as well as they learn from live bullets flying.

  5. I think there's a pretty decent chance that Chris Simms had it right: Come training camp, Bills players and coaches and fans are going to see Josh Allen thrown 10 passes, and then see McCarron and Peterman throw 10 passes, and realize how superior Allen's arm strength and physical talent. Now, obviously there is more to playing QB in the NFL than having a big arm and physical talent, but it won't exactly be shocking if Josh Allen so significantly out-throws the other two guys that he winds up winning the job.

Remember, too: As much as everyone says Allen is a project, the system he played in at Wyoming was closer to NFL offense than any of the other top prospects from this year. 48% of snaps from under center, advanced route concepts, RPOs, you name it. The same system that Wentz ran in college. Oh, and he has that 37 Wonderlic score. People shouldn't be that shocked if he wins the job. If not by week 1, then certainly by week 6 or 7.

  6. I have a basic policy: I never get upset over day 3 picks. Why? Because I've never seen most of these kids play. I only know what draft guides and analysts tell me, and those are obviously wrong a lot and very limited compared to the knowledge and access that pro scouts have.

That being said, from what I'm reading about the Bills' day 3 picks, I am cautiously optimistic. Johnson should be CB4 immediately and contribute on special teams, with the upside to become a starting nickel. He absolutely DOMINATED in college. Neal should be a big nickel (S/LB) hybrid for us and could see immediate playing time in 3-safety sub-package looks. He will also contribute on special teams. Wyatt Teller seems like a beast and I expect him to be a starting guard sooner than later. At the very least, he'll be excellent depth. Ray Ray McCloud will immediately factor into the punt return competition and could have some usefulness as a gadget player.

Depth, special teams and sub package contributions, and potential long term starting capability. Not much more you can ask for from day 3 of the draft.

Another lackluster pick.  This team needs balance.  We need some talent on the offensive side and picking small school guys in the secondary is getting really old.

Ya know what else is getting really old? People thinking that a 5th round receiver is the difference between good and bad offensive production in 2018. Rome wasn't built in a day.

Not to mention teams continually find DB’s in the 4th/5th rounds that are impact players due to how many DB’s teams utilize in the current NFL.

I feel really good with Hyde/Poyer at Safety with Neal/Bush as depth along with White/Davis/Johnson/Gaines at CB.

Johnson and Neal are guys who can help

us this year if needed.   The OL/WR prospects left are nothing more than what we already have.

Agreed. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder with corners. Johnson will contribute on ST and defense for the Bills.

Sirian Neal will also likely see immediate playing time in sub-packages as a big nickel, and will also contribute heavily on special teams.

That's the kind of thing the 4th and 5th rounds are for. Not taking need positions just so we can say we addressed them.

    ...OL?...guess we're all set......interesting............

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Just because we NEED a few offensive linemen doesn't necessarily mean that the ones left on the board are worth taking. What if the highest rated player on the Bills' board is a safety or corner, and he's highest ranked BY FAR. Do you want them to draft an inferior player just because they have a need?

A fifth round offensive lineman isn't walking through the door and curing what ails the Bills in terms of run and pass protection. Honor value, find contributors, trust your board. Don't reach for need in late rounds to make fans happy.

  10. Just a quick note. It always bugs me when, int he 4th round and beyond, people get upset about certain picks. First of all, there is NO POSSIBLE WAY the complaining person has actually seen the person they're complaining about play football. Is anyone really gonna sit here and tell me they watched film on Teron Johnson from Weber State?

More importantly, though, the 4th through 7th rounds are not for filling perceived needs! They're just not.

You find your starters and early big time contributors in rounds 1-3. Rounds 4-7 are for special teams players and depth, and hopefully those players also profile to long term starters or sub-package players.

So next time you want the 19th ranked wide receiver from Valdasta St and the Bills instead draft the 22nd ranked inside linebacker from Alcorn St, let's not pretend like it's a make-or-break crisis that's gonna cost the Bills the season. Okay? Okay.

Offense will have to wait until next season but the defense is looking good. Need to add a couple CB's though, slot and depth. This unit could be special next season. Our sub package, which is basically our base defense, looks strong.

I agree that the defense should be much improved. The defensive line rotation looks miles better with the additions of Star, Phillips, and Murphy. Edmunds should elevate the entire defense to a new level. Even the secondary should be improved with White a year wiser, Poyer and Hyde, and Vontae instead of Gaines.

The offense could surprise people, too. They already have some legit NFL stars or high quality players. McCoy, Benjamin, and Clay represent three quality skill players. And if Allen turns out to be a franchise QB, he'll obviously elevate the offense. The thing that scares the daylights out of me right now is the offensive line. Dawkins is a good player, but pretty much the entire rest of the line is a question mark. Here's hoping guys like Groy, Miller, and Connor McDermott step up and protect our new quarterback.

  12. Early in the draft process, Gettleman had a quote where he said "you want to get a player you believe can be a Hall of Famer at pick 2. You don't want to get too cute". From that moment on, I didn't believe he was going to trade the pick. Why? Because Barkley profiles as a player who could be a Hall of Famer one day.

I really believe that only an obscene overpay, like both 1sts, both 2nds, both 3rds, and next year's 1st, were going to get the job done. The Bills and Beane must not have felt like Darnold was worth that kind of capital. If it was a "sure thing" like an Andrew Luck coming out, maybe. But then, if it was an Andrew Luck, the Browns would've taken him.

And yes, it DOES make me feel better to know that Mayfield and Darnold (my top two favorite choices for the Bills) weren't even really a realistic option. That means the choice in reality was Allen vs Rosen. And whether I agree or not, I can absolutely see why the Bills preferred Allen. Superior upside, character, personality, work ethic, team fit, you name it.

  13. Appreciate the post, but did you just say that Allen is SLIGHTLY more athletic than Bledsoe? You might want to go watch a few more Wyoming games. Bledsoe was a statue back there. I may not be thrilled that Allen was the pick, but I can readily admit that he's miles and miles ahead of Bledsoe athletically.
