SI - Josh Allen, Thrown to the Wolves
oldmanfan replied to TheElectricCompany's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would be more worried if he had the deer in the headlights look last week. He didn't. And although my eyes see differently, three other observers who see more film than I do say a good percentage of sacks were not due to poor O line play. So I hope as things progress, he sees thing more clearly and gets the ball out quicker. I say all the time: the biggest factor in a young QB succeeding is getting the game to slow down. Hopefully it does and the offense will improve. -
Did Vontae Davis retire at halftime? Yes, yes he did!

He says he doesn't care what anyone else thinks. Guess that pretty much says it all. -

Was it that? Or were they just bad? -

You say this scenario usually means a guy ends up on the scrap heap, and name one guy. Brilliant. -
Good point. We may be seeing Bodine soon.

No, he's elite based on what he's done in a 17 year career. What the hell is the matter with people around here? -
Sporting News article - Are Bills in fact rudderless?
oldmanfan replied to KOKO NFL's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You have to remember the times we live in. In the age of the Internet people are now accustomed to getting things right now. Patience as a virtue has been lost in today's society. As evidence look not only to the calls for McD and Beane to be fired right after a playoff year, but to the posts already saying we may need to draft another QB next year based on, you guessed it, one game from Allen. Just remember such posts likely come from those who get irritated if they are in the Starbucks drive through for more than 2 minutes. Saying the Bills are rudderless is just an article from some guy that has to fill copy every 24 hours or so. The article is just opinion with no actual digging to see what may or may not go on; essentially a regurgitation of old stuff. Plus theu guy (typically for national media who don't really follow the team) mixes up moves made over three different management groups and two owners. So take the article with a big grain of salt. Now, are Beane and McD completely off the hook? No. While they clearly have a plan, and part of that plan is to get the kinds of players they think they can win with and jettison guys they think are not that (and overpaid to boot), the plan is risky. They took a massive cap hit this year, much from prior bloated contracts but some they did to themselves. And they have to answer to the owner for mistakes such as Peterman, Coleman, and especially why their team came out with no answers in the first half two games in a row - that speaks to preparation and that is all on McD. They have a lot of cap space next year plus draft picks, and it is on them to use those wisely. If they don't, again it's on them and that could jeopardize their positions if they don't. But rudderless? Because some guy decides to quit in the middle of the game? And because some writer decides to write a hit piece? Hardly. -

Beane tends to look for these type guys hoping they turn it around. Guys like Coleman you can wait till they get cut. -

The trade up for Jones was a negative. Those for Allen and Edmunds hopefully got them their leaders for years to come. So I'm good with those. I would rather they keep lower round picks vs. trading for guys like Coleman. -

The article refers to total management and McD was there for that draft. Chemical, we will of course see how all these picks turn out. But Jones looks like he's starting to get it, and hopefully does more with Allen throwing the ball -
Would you draft Oliver or Bosa?

People are criticizing their drafting? White: lock down CB set for a while Dawkins: LT set for a while Jones: starting to come around, should give us a #2 or slot WR for a while Phillips: Anchors the D line as the young Kyle Edmunds: Incredible athlete, gives McD his MLB (and yes, Rivers schooled him and 20 year olds learn) Allen: potential long term answer at QB; how many folks howled for the Bills to finally go all in and get a QB? Johnson: slot CB Teller: depth at G and hopefully matures into a starter Ray Ray: Slot WR Thry may have not gotten the best FAs this year. That you can criticize. But drafting? They have a plan. They have 10 picks and a ton of cash. They want football players; by going after non flashy FAs (maybe one or two major ines) and with the next draft they can get things going quickly. They wanted to compete short and long term. Last year the plan worked exactly as hoped for. This year may not, at least the short term part. Their success or failure will come from how good they are at picking the right guys, like every other team in the league. -

My eyes see it much differently. But I guess that's why I'm not an NFL coach. -
[Edited Title] Patrick Mahomes Looks Great
oldmanfan replied to Wizard's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Says the guy who would have trade an entire draft to get Winston. Mahomes looked great the first two games. Have to hand it to the kid. coming out there was a lot of concern an=bout his footwork, that he had only played in the one read spread option, and so on. If he continues the way he's going every team in the league will regret not taking him. I wanted Watson in that draft. And around this time last year people were agog over him like they are with Mahomes now. Flash forward to this season and Watson has struggled for a couple games, and now folks are wondering if they anointed him too soon. My point: let these young guys play some, look at the tools they have around them, let them go through ups and downs. And then we'll see. Oh, and by the way. Size, arm, moxie? Pretty much describes the Bills current starting QB. -

Every throw from Josh Allen’s 1st start
oldmanfan replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would be willing to wager we'd see that in 99% of guys making their first start. I was encouraged that he didn't have the deer in the headlights look. -

I think it will improve. He works constantly on his mechanics. When they game slows down for him then the mechanics are easier to accomplish. To me the most important thing for any young QB, far apart from mechanics, arm strength, etc., is for the game to slow down. When you can get the game to slow down, you can come up to the line more confident in where the ball should go, more confident in your throw, you can step up with more confidence. And so on. -

For God's sakes. It was his first game. I get called out for criticizing fans instead of players. Go ahead and do it again if you want, because this kind of stuff is nuts. Slow eyes- it's his first time against a full defense prepped for a real game.
