Only 17 passes in the entire NFL in the last 5 years have travelled more than 60 yards in the air.

Only 4 of them were caught.

Why is this interesting? I would wager most of those were hail marys. Most QBs can't shoot the ball 60+ yards downfield with a flick of the wrist so obviously most offenses don't bother trying. I hope we throw deep a ton this year. Tooo many times I've seen the Bills secondary get a DPI on long throws and the past couple years we haven't tried to be the beneficiaries of that.

I hated the pick and he won me over since. I think he should start now. A lot of fans I know and post here hated the pick when it happened feel the same way I do.

I'm getting there. Still not 100% on him starting game 1 but I've come a long way from posting "Kill me" when we picked him over Rosen. He's developed quite a bit since minicamp practice 1. Credit to Daboll.

FWIW, on the Colin Cowherd show today, Brady Quinn was a guest and he was asked questions about Baker Mayfield's performance.  With absolutely no prompting or mention of Allen's name, Quinn said (to paraphrase) "ya know the guy who I thought was great last night: Josh Allen.  He's the guy who looked like the #1 overall pick last night."

He brought Allen's name in again at some point during that interview; again, with no prompting.

I think you're all alone with blinders on if you thought Allen didn't look really, really good.

Thanks for the info. I think the first thing NFL players look for in a QB is pocket presence. Besides his arm strength that was Allen's best trait last night. He looks very comfortable in the pocket and stepped up on all his throws. Quinn knows firsthand how hard that is to do. Not sure that can be taught either.

We can't make excuses for him either. That's the kind of stupid play that results in -7 point momentum-changer.

"Nothing to lose" isn't accurate. The Bills were still in the game.

Dude it's preseason. I don't even think of it as a game, it's a series of practice scrimmages. In a real game we wouldn't have even gone for it there. It was just an opportunity to practice a play, but the play got blown up and Allen tried to make something happen on his own. Who really cares?

Lee bailed him out on a pass that should not have been thrown.

I don't know if that ball should have been thrown but Lee didn't bail him out. It was a perfect pass put where only his TE could get it. It couldn't have been thrown better. Now everything he did on that pass is the opposite of what they teach you but his arm is so strong he can get away with it.

He threw the pigskin over the mountains, but his spotty accuracy and suspect decision making forced him to come up short.

I am pretty sure I know the two "inaccurate" passes you're talking about and they weren't inaccurate. The receivers ran a different route than Allen expected. The first one he immediately tapped himself to say "my bad." The second one I'm not sure who's to blame. But those are the mistakes I expect to see in preseason game 1 in a complicated offense. The things he did well were a lot more impressive. I thought his biggest mistakes were trying to hit receivers that were completely blanketed, but in his defense his receivers were blanketed most of the night and his two best plays came on throws to blanketed receivers. I need to see him with the 1s to have a better opinion but it was a very promising start.

And Peterman's poor velocity was still there last night. I say that as someone that has defended him. He isn't going to be able to challenge defenses, although personally I didn't see McCarron's performance as that much better.

I agree.  But I am a little worried Peterman is fools.gold in the preseason.  He looks great because he makes quick throws.  Against vanilla defenses with wider windows that works well for him.  My worry is when defenses tighten up his arm strength issue will show itself again.

I rewatched that TD drive and I agree with this. It wasn't as impressive the 2nd time around. I've defended Peterman as much as anyone on this board but the velocity just wasn't there by my eyes. There's a litte more separation in preseason so he can get away with it.

He missed a lot of throws to be truthful.

Not really. A couple miscommunications where he thought the receiver was running a different route. A couple bad decisions. A lot of plays where the receivers and line did nothing to help him. I'm happy with his performance overall all things considered.

The throw to Lee was actually crazy good as well.  It wasn't like most of those type of throws where the QB is scrambling and throws it up off their back foot and it gets completed because it is underthrown and the receiver makes an adjustment and comes back for it - it was still put right on the money over the defender

I don't know how to feel about plays like that. It's usually not a smart decision... but despite how awful the mechanics looked the throw was right on the money where only Lee could get it.
