  1. Agreed almost entirely Shaw. Only part I disagreed with was this:

he also knows that Matthews and Gaines plus the two guys the Bills can draft next year are probably better, collectively, than Watkins and Darby.

Beane is smart enough to know Matthews and Gaines are not better than Watkins and Darby, and 2 unknown prospects that we're taking a year from now shouldn't even factor in.

But it was still smart for a different reason. If Beane is pretty sure Watkins and Darby aren't coming back once their rookie deals are up, we might as well recoup something for them instead of renting them for a year and watching them walk. It's a brilliant move that past regimes would never make because they were too afraid to look past the upcoming season. That's how you build a team, looking ahead. Accept the short term loss for the long term gain.

Good moves that make me feel optimistic about the future. But now everything rides on the 2018 draft and that's a little scary.

  2. The Rams have a good defense and alot of weapons on offense...including maybe the best RB in football.

    Another silly statement by you

The Rams do have a good defense but the rest of your post is bizarre. The best RB in football? What? Gurley has a long way to go before he's even in the conversation of being a top 5 back. This is ridiculous even for you Crusher. He had a 3.2 YPC last year. What weapons do they have besides Sammy? And who is throwing the ball? Goff was awful last year. Don't let your opinions on Tyrod get in the way of that fact.
  3. Same old, same old. If you ever wondered how so many people can become victims of scams, just consider that despite the fact that the Bills have failed to make the playoffs for 17 straight years, they have managed to sell the hope of another resurrection to so many of their fans by trading away two of their best players ...

How is this same old Bills? You can dislike the move but it is far from anything the Bills have done during the drought. They are building the team in a much different way than we are used to.

Cooks got a 1 and a 3 in this draft- part of me wonders if we could've done a bit better here for a total haul from Sammy and a good young corner on a rookie deal -- especially if willing to be decisive early in the offseason and maybe dabble in free agency a little to round out the positions instead of trading WR/cb for WR/cb in august

A Pats 1st and a Rams 2nd are about the same.

  4. Everyone is running around with their hair on fire over the change at WR.

I'm way more curious about our CBs. We've lost both Gilmore and Darby now. It's hard for me to believe that our young defensive minded Head Coach is going to pin his hopes and career on this new line up unless he's pretty sure his defense can withstand the changes. I'm praying that Gaines is a baller.

Agreed I have no clue who our #2 CB is. Wouldn't be surprised to see us make another move.

  5. Elite receivers with top salaries don't win Super Bowls, they just lead them by 25 points in the 2nd half.

What happened after Sammy made those comments? The answer is that he was targeted a rate that's comparable to other top receivers (a shocking concept) and was the best receiver in the league from that point forward. He was right, THROW HIM THE BALL!!

The Rams are about to sign him to a long-term deal. They invested heavily in their QB and now they got him a go-to guy along with a bright young offensive mind. This was a no-brained for the Rams.

Julio was an exception, not the rule. Matt Ryan playing at an elite level was more responsible anyways. In Buffalo of all places, where it snows in playoff season, I am sure that is not our best strategy. Sammy is fun to watch but not worth the money he will end up commanding.
  6. Guys. Goff is disgustingly bad. That has to play into the analysis of the trade for the Rams. Goff was so bad last year he was actually much worse than EJ Manuel was in his rookie year. He had the worst DVOA for a quarterback under pressure AND not under pressure. It isn't just that he was bad, he did nothing well. If he turns it around it will be an all-time shocker. Trading a top 40 pick for a receiver in a contract year is a horrible decision.

Rams are taking the Whaley approach. We'll see if it works out for them

This is exactly right. Whaley was fired because of moves like this.

  7.

Way to convince yourself. With an investment in a young QB in Goff, acquiring a #1 WR like Sammy makes perfect sense and Sean McVay will know exactly how to get the most out of him.

Goff was horrible last year. There's nothing to suggest he will take the next step. This is a lot like Whaley bringing on Sammy to try and make EJ into something he isn't. Obviously the Rams didn't give up nearly as much as Whaley did but it's still a poor trade for them, and they have to pay him like a superstar after his first year with them or else it's an indefensible trade.

FWIW Bill Barnwell says the draft pick value we got in both trades is equivalent to a 16th overall pick in an average draft.

  8. Ha ha ha ha, the star receiver wants the ball?!? Oh the nerve of that guy!! The other players need to get a turn as well. Why throw it to Sammy when Greg Salas hasn't seen the ball all game? Walt Powell wants needs his chance too.

It isn't about Sammy wanting the ball, it's how he went about it. He went rogue to local media and bitched about his targets. I don't care who you are, it's immature. The getting in arguments on Instagram thing was immature too. Couple all of this with nagging injuries and an offense/team that he doesn't fit into. He wasn't coming back. We're better off getting something for him now. Elite receivers with top salaries don't win Super Bowls. Just looking at Super Bowl winners from the past decade it makes no sense to give Sammy a big contract.

I think this trade was awful for the Rams the more I think about it. Doesn't make any sense for them.

  9. If Jones can run his combine 4.45 in pads, I agree.

We had either Goodwin or Sammy or both to take the top off a D.

ZJ is our deep threat now - to go with the sweet TT deep ball.

Modern NFL needs that guy to make a secondary worry.

Goodwin and Sammy were that guy for us ... both gone.

I don't know what we plan on doing for a deep threat this year, that's my biggest concern on offense. Honestly even before Sammy trade it was a concern because who knows how many games he ends up playing at full health. I am thinking Beane is watching the waiver wire for a speed receiver, I don't think the Bills are done making moves yet.

  10. With FO not picking up Sammys 5th year option ( to me means that we were not going to resign him )

And if that was the case , then it makes sense to get a 2nd round pick ( especially coming from Rams ) then just lose him next and get nothing , just my opinion

Should be a high 2nd round pick as well. That's the best anyone was gonna offer for Sammy. EJ Gaines was just thrown in there so the Bills could feel like they got a CB back after losing Darby. If we didn't plan on extending him or were even unsure, the trade makes a lot of sense.

  11. Do we? I thought definitive statements like these were not allowed or else someone jumps down your throat. Or this that only when referring to the QB?

Do we know for sure? Nope. But it was pretty likely. I was thinkin about this season as if Sammy would not be playing 16 games and I'm glad Beane basically did the same. We traded up for a receiver and signed Boldin. And now we got Matthews. If Tyrod needs an elite receiver playing at an elite level to be successful he isn't worth it anymore. We have a nice collection of receivers now let's see what we do this year.

  12. That's because they knew he was out before. He impacts every single play.

Week 3 of 2016, news came out late that Sammy would not be playing. The spread went from +4 to +5. So that's actually more than I was expecting but still low. That's the value Vegas puts on Sammy, a single point. Which is still really high for one player that isn't a QB! But it puts things in perspective.

  13. I disagree with this. A healthy Sammy impacts the entire game. He's the only guy on the roster to stretch the field. That pulls the safeties away from the line and opens the middle for Clay and the running game. In addition he requires help at all times leaving others singled. Watkins presence influences every play even if the ball isn't thrown in his direction.

I'm just saying Vegas doesn't see it that way. Vegas doesn't modify lines unless a QB goes down, or like if Shady went down obviously. Last year in the games Sammy was injured there wasn't any line movement from what I can remember.

  14. OMG, is that really how you interpreted that?!?!? You cleary missed the point. Do you think that you are better off winning 7 games or 3? I think 3. If your plan is to rebuild commit to it and raise your chances of getting a top pick.

Let's say Sammy and Darby were both injured for a game. How do you think it would affect the Vegas line? I don't think it would affect it at all, maybe a point but probably not even that much. The truth is those players weren't going to be difference makers this year as far as our record is concerned.

  15. It's been an emotional roller coaster for me. When the move was first announced I wanted nothing to do with the Bills for the rest of the year. And now I am firmly convinced these were both smart moves, not great, but smart. Our pass game will not be what I was expecting, obviously, but the run game should make up for it and we still have good young talent so hopefully someone steps up.

I'm back on the hype train baby!!!

  16. Vic C was just on Sirius. Interestingly, he alluded to the type of mentality/character player McD wanted and it didn't sound like he thought McD was thrilled with either of them in that respect. I think Sammy was more to get something instead of potentially nothing after this year (although Vic said he thought Sammy's recent $$$ comments probably made McD "cringe"), I think Darby might have been more personality TBH. It's not like he has ever exuded the type of leadership/confidence McD cherishes so much (See Gilmore, Stephon).

When Lofton said they basically have 3 slot receivers and no deep threat, Vic said that is correct, and the brass is fine with that. Dennison wants to run more of a 'horizontal' passing game, and the offense will be based on the running game and grind it out short passing game.

Thanks for the info. That confirms what I thought. This is not a tank move. It is extremely shocking but they are still trying to win now.
