I am not an Allen hater but EJ tracked better through his first 5 games

But this is kind of the point. Judging a QB's career from their first 5 games is a fool's errand. Here's a list of rookie QBs and their stats after their first 5 games (with a minimum of 50 total pass attempts), ranked in descending order by passer rating:

    http://pfref.com/tiny/xbaMx

    The top 10 in order:

    Marc Bulger

    Dak Prescott

    RGIII

    Deshaun Watson

    Ben Roethlisberger

    Carson Wentz

    Jake Locker

    Todd Bouman

    Cody Kessler

    Marcus Mariota

Josh Allen already ranks above Alex Smith, Eli Manning, Carson Palmer, and Ryan Fitzpatrick on this chart. He is not far below Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff. 42 QBs including the likes of Mark Sanchez and EJ Manuel rank above Andrew Luck on this chart.

The point is you can look at just about any grouping in this chart and find something weird. Rookie QBs aren't defined by what they do in their first 5 games. It is just as likely that he improves tremendously next year as it is that he regresses. Anyone making predictions either way is foolish.

What are you watching?  I saw maybe 1 or 2 inaccurate passes today.  Now, if you want to say he isn’t seeing the field, ok fine.  The “he is inaccurate” mantra is off in my opinion.

I agree. The biggest reason I didn't want to draft Allen originally was accuracy concerns. But he he is looking a lot more accurate now than he did at Wyoming. He had one truly inaccurate pass today and it was his first pass. He has all the physical tools - elite arm strength, elite balance, and good enough accuracy. All of his flaws are mental and that is not a bad spot to be right now. It's like learning to drive for the first time. The first time I merged onto a highway I was scared to death at the oncoming traffic. Now I've been driving for many many years and the speed of the traffic is natural. I'm better at anticipating where cars are going to be. I just needed that adjustment period. And who knows, Allen might never develop good enough field vision to be a top flight QB. But in my mind a QB with terrible field vision throws a lot of picks and Allen isn't doing that right now. He is if anything being too hesitant with the ball. If he can learn to trust what he sees and quickly read a defense he's going to be very very good. By the end of the season he should be reacting to pressure much better than he is now. I have already seen progress from the start of the season but it's going to be slow and it won't always be linear.

  3. We would at most win 1-2 more games this season and that's no guarantee. At the end of the season the result would be the same - no playoffs - except we'd have one less high 5th rounder and lower draft position. The absolute best case scenario would be sneaking into a wildcard spot and losing the wildcard game. No thanks, I'll take the draft pick that could turn into another Milano or Taron Johnson.

And the problem with the short passes today wasn't Allen's accuracy it was that the Texans seemed to anticipate those plays.  They blew up a couple of screens and it was clear that they wanted to force us to throw down field

Exactly. And when we started throwing downfield Allen was getting into a groove. Then he got injured. I don't know how anyone watches today's game with any kind of prediction about his future. He is still adjusting to NFL game speed and that adjustment will come with ups and downs. We'll have a much better idea of where he is at at the end of the season. Right now it's anybody's guess.

If you can't complete 60% against the Mountain West, why would be able to accurate in the NFL? He has size and arm strength but he needs to be developed. We should have sat him for a year to get acclimated to the game.

Accuracy hasn't been his problem. Pocket awareness is his biggest weakness right now.

I thought he was about a zero, neutral today. He didn't make a single play that I thought really helped us and he didn't make a single play that really hurt us. His biggest problem is he is definitely abandoning plays too early and looking to escape. The announcers were speculating that he is dropping his eyes to the rush - that may be true - and if it is that would be a worry because the one way I think it is possible to ruin a rookie QB is if he starts seeing pressure where there isn't and when he has time to throw.

Right that is the biggest thing he needs to work on, moving in the pocket and not bailing at the first sign of pressure. No doubt he is still a work in progress. He made a couple great throws downfield at the end, of course one was called back on a pointless illegal formation penalty but it still counts as a positive. It really sucks he had to leave the game because he was getting into a rhythm. In my mine I'm still grading him on a curve because the receivers just aren't good.

I think that his pocket awareness is killing him, and I hope that Anderson can help him out.

Yeah if there's one major thing I'd criticize him for it's that he sees ghosts in the pocket sometimes. I did not want Allen before the draft but I always said the team that drafts him will need to be patient so I'm keeping my word on that. I saw progress today and that's all I'm looking for.

Had a chance for a 4 way tie in the AFC East

Sure but realistically we aren't winning the division or making the playoffs for that matter. I'm watching this season for progress and whatever wins we get are just for fun. The defense is going to be elite next year and we have tons of resources to spend on offense. I thought Allen looked pretty good today too, he made some progress IMO. Once he was injured the rest of the game didn't matter that much. It was fun though.

Oh well would have been a good win. But this is not a playoff team. What a waste of a good defense

The offense is way too terrible for us to be a playoff team. A loss like that would have normally gutted me but I just can't bring myself to care right now. Hopefully Allen is good to next week because he's what this season is all about. Next season we will already have an elite defense and our offense will look completely different. The signs are there.

No, he does deserve it, for deciding that Peterman > McCarron.  We needed a veteran backup.  Peterman just can't stop making mistakes.

This year is meaningless. I really could care less that our backup QB lost us a game after Allen went down. Anderson will be the backup starting next week but you can't honestly think that would matter right now.
