Question - what makes Jon Ledyard such an authority?  He works for a second rate, niche website about 95% of football fans don’t even know exists.

There is no "authority" on NFL scouting. GMs making millions of dollars get it wrong as often as random scouting blogs run by fans who do it for fun. I take Ledyard's opinion for what it is. He clearly has a bias against Josh Allen but at the same time his analysis of the individual plays is fair. I wouldn't call his game "brutally bad," that's hyperbole. Darnold's game against Cleveland was brutally bad. Allen's first game was a typical rookie game and I just want to see him get better.

RE: the throw to Dimarco- I remember a ton of people last year swearing up and down that, in a very similar situation, Jones was to blame for running a bad route in the last few seconds of the Panthers game. The two plays aren't identical obviously (main difference is Allen-->Dimarco was a completion and Taylor-->Jones an incompletion), but does Allen get extended the same consideration that was afforded to Taylor?

I tend to agree with this, I don't know for sure DiMarco made the right play on the ball. I didn't think Allen's accuracy was bad. I only saw 2 throws that were too inaccurate by NFL standards. Being incredibly precise with the ball will never be his game. Some QBs make their living hitting a pass 8 yards down the field with perfect precision that allows for 10 yards of YAC - Allen will instead just hit a receiver 18 yards down the field. It's the same result and you don't need pinpoint accuracy to play that style of QB. What he needs to get better at is reading the field and identifying coverages pre-snap. If you watch Mahomes play the past 2 weeks he hasn't been firing precise darts. He's identifying open receivers and delivering them the ball on time with just enough accuracy. His receivers are making good plays on the ball too.

I know that there are plenty of QBs who did benefit from having g a vet or a good QB coach or HC too.

Some QBs turn out good and most turn out bad. There is no similar thread that binds the good ones together. They've succeeded under wildly different circumstances. Personally I think a QB will end up good or bad regardless of the situation he comes into. You get people like Prescott who looked good in a great situation but now looks like crap, and you get people like Peyton Manning who came onto a bad team and looked good later on. It makes no difference.

And sure in a vacuum I'd rather have Tyrod or McCarron here over Peterman. But I wouldn't give up a draft pick for it.

Does this even make sense with the expectation that a 21 year old rookie QB will have ups and downs early in his career?  Having a veteran mentor on-hand for support during the struggles should only be seen as a benefit.

That's what coaches are for. I don't believe any backup QB is more valuable in the QB room than they are in draft picks. Getting a 3rd for Tyrod and a 5th for McCarron was highway robbery.

Nobody is saying its a necessity, or the rookies have to imitate the vet, why cant people get over that.  But having a veterans knowledge on the sidelines and the film room would be huge.  Anyone who thinks no vet presence is better than none, please let me know

McCown's presence has been so valuable to Darnold that he's regressed in every game. I would trade any backup QB for any pick at all unless I had a team ready to compete for the Super Bowl.

Is it me, or does Dabol sound very underwhelming for an alleged offensive genius?

I thought Daboll called a good game last week. There were routes open but Allen didn't always see them. There was enough trickery to keep LA on their toes. He's working with the worst offensive cast in the NFL and a rookie QB considered to be very raw. I'm not expecting the greatest show on turf.

Darnold looked amazing in game 1, but then the NFL had film on him.

Mayfield looks good in game 1, but now the NFL has film on him.

Darnold didn't look as good as the stat sheet showed in game 1. Mayfield arguably looked even better than his stat sheet. He had one bad pass, an almost interception in the red zone. Every other play was just about perfect.

Hue Jackson should STILL be fired in the morning for starting Taylor over Mayfield for the first 3 games.

You say this but I think they did it exactly right. Let the veteran lose the job. Now the team belongs to Mayfield. The Jets should have started McCown and they wouldn't he stuck in the bad situation they're in now.

Watson looked unstoppable last year, and now he looks pretty meh.

True but Mayfield made some incredible throws tonight. He isn't just tossing passes up for grabs. His pinpoint accuracy has carried over from college to the NFL. And his arm is more than strong enough. I wanted him bad but not much you can do when the 0-16 team wants him too.
