Background- Whaley spent to the cap in the 2013 season, 2014 season, 2015 season and 2016 season.  He never rolled over more than 2 mil in any single year. In order to sustain this spending contracts had to be back loaded and contracts needed to be reworked.  These things are common in teams making a championship push, we never made that push but we did pay for the attempt.

2017- Heading into the off season we had 24 million in cap space. Our major free agents were Woods, Goodwin, Gilmore, Zack Brown and Lorenzo Alexander. In order to have resigned them they would have needed to rely on cheep contracts now that become expensive later, as well as renegotiating other contracts. Looking ahead these choices would eventually lead to not being able to retain talent, just like retaining Woods, Gilmore and Goodwin was going to be tough in 2017.

Looking ahead to 2018- Talent was going to be lost on the way to 2018, no way around it.  There wouldn't be cap room to replace that talent either meaning the reliance was going to be solely on the draft to fill those gaps. If you look at how our cap would have projected you can see the crunch we were in.  These figures are based on the actual 2018 cap hits of these players or the cost to have kept their contracts in the case of traded players. Some of these players may have had larger cap hits for us as a consequence of squeezing them under our 2017 cap.

The players we did not resign

    Gilmore- 12.5

    Woods-5.5

    Goodwin-6.2

    Total 24.2

    The players we traded

Watkins- 13.2 (cost of 5th year option)

    Darius- 16

    Glenn-15

    Tyrod-16

    Total-60.2

    The retirement

    Wood- 9

    Players we kept

    Mccoy-9

    Clay-9

    Hughes-10.4

    K Williams- 5.5

    Total 33.9

The total for that core group of players that our 2016 roster was built around would have been 127.3 million in 2018

Leaving 50 Million to sign 2017 rookies, 2018 rookies and fill a total of 41 other roster spots an impossible task.

This is something that most bills fans have a vague awareness of, but thank you for laying it out for us.  It makes Beane look much more pragmatic.   This must have taken you a great deal of research.

    1. Minnesota might have a let down this game, this match-up is sandwiched between Green Bay and at Philadelphia.

    2. McDermott calling plays will help this defense a lot. I feel a chip on the shoulder game coming this week after the embarrassment of those first 6 quarters.

    3. After all, we always seem to win NFC games over the last decade.

    4. Defense creates 3 turnovers, Shady finally runs a little, 23-21 upset.

    5. Someone had to right? LAMP is in style.....

I like your positive attitude.   But what is your guarantee?   If they loose, what do you back it up with?

1.) Defense in the 2nd Half after McD took over the playcalling.

2.) Allen. For his first game, with that offense, he played well. Made rookie mistakes but that's to be expected.

Right now, we're projected to have $90 Million in cap space next offseason according to Spotrac and will have a high draft pick. The future is bright.

Agree.   We just have to get through this season.   5-6 wins would be nice.

Allen's accuracy issues weren't exaggerated at all.

Can't say I feel great about picking him right now.

I am sure with the speed of the game and the pressure he felt in the first half, he forgot some of the things he had worked on in the preseason to improve his accuracy.   He made some very nice throws today as well.  What about those?   With a rookies qb. You look for positives, and there were plenty.  It is easy to find flaws with a rookie qb making his first start. But come on, get real.   Brady would not have looked good in the first half with the lack of protection Josh had to deal with.  Slow down and enjoy watching him grow.   What is the point in being so negative?

Now think about Peterman getting most of the first string reps in camp and getting all the first string reps for the Ravens game.

Allen really hasn't played that much with the starting offense so his timing and getting to know what to expect from each receiver should get better as the season goes on.

Now, If Daboll can get the run game working to help this rookie out he won't always be passing and be in third and longs. 13 touches is not enough for McCoy and 39 yards rushing didn't cut it either.

Five sacks today and it could have been much worse If Bosa had played.

So much is wrong with this offense right now and the least of the worry is the QB.

    Great points.  Thank you.

Solid post. If our defense plays like the second half for 4 quarters, we can win some games. They really slowed that offense down after getting piledrived for the first 30 minutes. And I loved what I saw from Allen. Give him time, he will surprise many people.

This has me thinking too. Frasier was on point with his play calling last year, but this year he's just getting everything wrong. If McD feels he can call the defensive plays while still handling his head coach responsibilities, im all for it, but it usually spells trouble when a head coach puts too much on his plate.

It was amazing what a difference defensive play calling made.  We had an impressive pass rush in the 2nd half.

1 - McDermott took over the defense at halftime. Glad he stepped up and did something.

2 - Allen was a bit rough, but the leadership and potential there was exciting.

This game actually gave me hope. Allen threw for 245 yards in his debut, which is more than we've seen in probably 2 years

Great post.  This is going to be a difficult year for fans, but there was a lot to be encouraged with .  Do you think McDermott will continue to call the defensive plays the remainder of the season?   If so, are Frasier's days numbered?

  7. 1 minute ago, Dadonkadonk said:

Not really.  He had a few other throws that weren't great.  I have been an Allen guy from the beginning.  He was perfectly fine today.  Not great but exactly what I expected.  Made more throws than TT ever did and more INT than TT ever did.

This board/organization didn't want TT.  Well this is what you get.  It's fine.  If he gets better and starts having more 2-3 TD 1 INT games over the season he will be fine.

Given what he has to work with along with his inexperience,  he is doing very well.  He will continue to improve.   Those that complain about his accuracy, how have the other rookie qbs been with their accuracy?  He has made some very nice through, some very bad.  His accuracy will improve with experience.  This harsh judgement from our football "experts". Are a bit premature.   Give him till at least 8 starts before you are ready to throw in the towel.  Especially the 'fixing accuracy almost never works". Give me a break.

  8. I am pleased with Josh today.   Playing only two years in the Mountain West conference then starting in game two his rookie year... not bad at all.  Also, the defense came alive with pressure on the qb and good run defense in the second half.   I am very pleased.  I don't understand all the harsh comments in this thread for Allen.   Give him a break.

Interesting tidbit from WGR...according to Jerry White there is a prop bet that places Coach McDermott as one of the 5 coaches most likely to get fired.  They gave him 1-5 odds of getting fired.  I know little about better but I am considering betting my life savings against it.

IMO, the Bills can go 0-16 and there’s no way Coach is getting axed.  There are a plethora of reasons.  The first is practicality.  In his first year McDermott led the Bills to the playoffs. Period.  That was unthinkable a few years ago, and breaking that streak was huge for both Coach and this franchise.

Second are the Pegulas.  The love Coach and treat him like family.  They gave him a lot of power and authority and he delivered.

The third is continuity.  The Pegulas are conscious of their reputation of getting rid of coaches.  They also know the history of the Bills.  Terry is rumored to have consultants to discuss business with and they will preach continuity as well.

The last is that McDermott and Beane were probably very clear in the time their “process” would take.  I have no doubt that Terry gave Coach his word that he was committed to five years and would give him some time.

Either way, I’d put the odds if Coach McDermottt getting fired at 5%.  Jerry White said he feels McDermott is one of the safest coaches in the NFL.  I would agree.  What say you?

I agree with you.  This organization needs to stop giving head coaches two or three years and then move on to the next one.  McDermott and Beane should both be given 5 years for sure.  Let's let them work their process and see what they can do.

At this point I am all for letting Allen ride this season out. But if he gets hurt or we need a number two I do not want to see Peterman back on the filed. So what is the plan at back up? I like the idea of a vet mentor guy. Also see taking a look at guys with potential. Some ideas below.

    Usual has been:

    D Anderson

    M Moore

    Huh

    Jay Cutler

    Colin Kaepernick

    Really

    Paxton Lynch

    Davis Webb

    I have heard of him

    Ryan Nassib

    Johnny Football

I would go with Anderson Moore or Lynch in that order.  I have the feeling that this Beane is reluctant to sign any other quarterbacks.  I hope I am wrong.

Because he "earned it"  My guess is McBeane already had Josh's backup on his radar and this game 1 audition was Peterman's last chance to prove he could play under "live" fire.  They intended for Allen to start very early in the season when they traded McCarron.  Watch them sign Paxton Lynch.

    I hope you are right.

When are the Bills going to cut Nathan Peterman? This guy has no business in the NFL!!! He almost cost the Bills a playoff birth and he now is about to derail the season.  He has proved to us that he is not ready for the NFL!!! Let cut ties with him and put this mistake behind us!!!

The bills need to sign a third qb that is a veteran and let him learn the system for a few weeks.  Promote him to 2nd string and put Peterman on the practice squad, if that is possible, to use him as the emergency qb.

This team is awful. There are so many holes it’s almost irreparable.

Mccoy is old. Potential last year as bill

Clay is old.  Last year as bill

    benjamin is gone. He sucks

entire offensive line is a joke

    jerry Hughes is old

    trent Murphy sucks

    star sucks

    the whole defense sucks

after 30 years it’s almost time to hang em up.

I had more fun streaming browns/steelers. Turned the game off when bills were down 17. Losers

save the anguish and jump on the browns/mayfield bandwagon with me. Time to convert

The bills will always suck. Time to accept it.

Not a true fan.  Yes it is frustrating, but you can not dump a team when things are bad.

Pretty simple.  Just looking to see where this board stands on our QB?

I wasn’t a fan of this he pick and the entire bar turned around and looked at me when I screamed *************** as loud as I could when I heard Goodell announce Allen instead of Rosen.

A week later, Allen is my guy and while I want to see our new QB ASAP, I hope we sit him til at least week 7.  Potential brutal start to the schedule with a patchwork OL and no WRs.  I hope he gets some time to experience the rigors of what the nfl is all about before he becomes our starter.

I now, love me some Josh ALLEN

He is our guy. Until he proves otherwise.  he deserves our support 100%

  15. I ran this poll prior to the draft.  I am interested to see how the Bills faithful feel about McDermott and Beane.  Are you more confident in the "Process" or have you lost confidence in the Bills management?

After the poll is closed . I will share the results of before vs after the 2018 draft.

( My apologies to those that dislike the term McBeane.  I have removed it from the questions, but left it in the title due to conserve space.)

  16. I am keeping an opened mind on AJ.

He has learned much in his 4 years as the #2 qb for the Bengals.   I think he could be an effective qb this year in McDermott 's  system.

After the success we had last year, I am not ready to assume we will take a step back as a team.

With the difficult schedule in 2018,  I am looking forward to see how we will compete against the leagues top teams.

    Billieve in the process!!!
