I just dont get the McD hate around here, or even the Allen hate.  We are literally 2-1 in the games following some switch that flipped at halftime against SD.  McD took a mediocre team and snapped a 17 year drought.  Not to mention, we should have been a 10 win team had ZJ not run such a crap route and trip over himself against Carolina.

This year, since inserting himself to resolve a terrible defensive situation, our D has really come to life and been at the heart of a 2-1 record against 3 tough opponents.  And he is doing this with a rookie QB being forced to play with the literal worst collection of offensive talent around him currently in the NFL.  Most of our starters on offense would have a hard time being backups, let alone starting on most teams.

Yet here we are...2-1 (including destroying a SB contender in Josh Allens first road start).  McD just keeps making chicken salad out of chicken s**t and people still piss and moan about him.  People calling him Juaron and crap.  Its crazy to me.

And Allen...people need to calm the F down.  He has had some good moments and some bad moments, he is young and being forced to learn with no help.  To over react to every struggle right now is as premature as Jason Biggs touching Nadia in American Pie.  Kid has an insane amount of potential and when you see it start to come out is a beautiful thing.  He is making rookie mistakes, and he will CONTINUE to make mistakes, especially with him always trying to do too much because the personnel around him sucks.  But this regime is armed with cap space and draft assets to start building around the kid on offense this next off season.  So just R-E-L-A-X because its going to be a season or two before we know where this kids career is likely headed.

Exactly!  Thank you for being a voice of reason and perspective.

  2. I don't see these two alternatives as mutually exclusive.   I believe winning ugly is the result of developing Allen.  We emphasize the ground game and supplement with high percentage and easy read passes with the occasional throw down field.  We rely on the defense to keep the score close.   That is how we develop Allen and at the same time win ugly.

I do understand that we won the game. I'm happy about it. I'm simply discussing the topic of this thread and pointing out the areas where we have a chance to score more points and we don't.

Sorry, I did not mean to come across as sarcastic,.  There is too much of that on this board.  I just can't understand why posters complain about how we win. This year any win is  a bonus and I will take our wins any way we can get them.

I think it would be helpful if we had receivers that could catch. I think a good start would be to stop throwing to Benjamin.

I agree with you on both counts.  It will be difficult to upgrade our receiving corp during the season while we are trying to manage our dead money situation.

Look at the sequence of plays when we're on the Titans 15 before the botched FG.

    Josh Allen 1 yard run

    Shady 2 yard run

Overthrow Zay in the end zone

They get down to the Titans 24 later in the game.

    Ivory 3 yards

    Croom 2 yard catch

    Allen sack -3 yards.

We got a total of 3 points for both of those drives. Good teams bury those and come away with 10-14. We don't have enough WR talent to do any real damage in the red zone.

No one said we are a good team.  We are a team in transition.   You do understand we won the game?!?!?!  We are going to win ugly this season.   We will be better next year for many reasons.

Through week 5, the Bills have scored the least amount of points in the NFL at 63, or 12.6 points per game. This includes teams that have already had a bye week and also the teams who have yet to play tonight on Monday night football.

Also, the Bills have -55 net points (63 points for, minus 118 points against). This is also the worst in the league. Bills are middle of the pack in points against (but this also includes teams who have had a bye week and who have yet to play tonight).

The defense appears to be doing its job of eliminating points, especially the past couple of games. What can the offense do to generate more points? It is clear that winning cannot be sustained with the number of points this team is generating per game.

There are many ways to look at the season so far.  The point differential is the result of our three lopsided losses. Most of those points were scored before our defense got on track.  Is you look at our last three games, our point differential. Is 0 in that time frame we have scored and gives up 40 points.

Also, if we win the turnover battle,  we have a great chance of winning.  We just won a close game with a last minute scoring drive.  We are 2-1 over the last three games.  We are trending in the right direction .

Of course our offense is struggling.   We have a raw rookie qb and an o line that lost three talented players (two of them unexpectedly).  The coaching staff is doing the best they can in a difficult situation.   They are doing what they need to do to improve our offense.  The o line is starting to develop cohesiveness,   they are bringing in a veteran qb to help mentor our rookie qb, and they are simplifying the offense to help that rookie qb to succeed.

For now, running the ball is what we do best.  What else can they do for now.

It is more fun to be a glass half full person than to just worry, even after a win, because we are winning differently than most other teams in the league.

Your post was in response to another post that a QB who can throw from the pocket is needed to win. Yes, we made the playoffs with Taylor at QB. Any team is capable, in any given year, of reaching the playoffs with a QB like Taylor. As the old saying goes, "Even a blind squirrel..."

For long-term, sustained success, a team needs a QB who can consistently throw from the pocket.

I believe many underestimate what the Bills accomplished last year.

When Rex was our coach, many on this board kept asking why he and his staff didn't design a system to utilize the player talents instead of forcing them to play in a system that they were not well suited to play.  That is what this coaching staff does.   We have a very raw rookie qb that played two years in the Mountain West Conference.   The jump from there to the NFL is monumental.

They are doing the right think by not asking Allen to do too much.  Taking the pressure off of Allen by depending on the ground game, and giving him a simplified passing strategy is allowing him to experience success in the early stages of his development.

In time, I am hopeful that we will see Allen develop into the pocket passer you are looking for.  It us going to take time a patience.

If we can win 6-7 games this rebuilding year with a rookie developmental quarterback,  that will be a fantastic success.

It's almost like winning the game has no meaning anymore. Style points are all that matter.

Exactly!  Why bemoan  how we win?  We have two more wins than I thought we would have at this point before the season started.

This is a rebuilding years and we are 2-3 after the most difficult part of our season.  We have 5 -6 winnable games remaining on our schedule.

News flash, the Bills are NOT the worst team in the league.

    Go Bills!!!

all we heard this offseasin is sin is our passing game couldn’t get worse.  Well in a league where offense records are being set, we are barely over 100 yards passing!

Wins are always nice but other Bills qb would be getting killed for this game.  This is Allen’s 3rd won in 2 years where he passed for under 100 yards.  Isn’t that why we got rid of Tyrod?

Wins are not graded by the quality.  This is where quantity matters.  We are in a full rebuilding year.  We are developing a very raw talent at qb, and we are 1 game under 500 after week 5.  What is there to complain about?  Did anyone se two wins in the first five games on our schedule when the season began?  Let's get real.  The defense has performed much better in the two wins we have plus the 2nd half in San Diego than anyone thought possible.

Looking at our remaining schedule, we have very winnable games against the Texans, Colts, Jets (2), Lions, and maybe even steal on from the Dolphins.  That is a potential of 8 wins!  Yes, we will lose a game we should win and maybe win another game we should loose, but 6 - 8 wins are a very real possibility.

I for one will sit back and enjoy watching Allen progress.  The offense may improve, the O line has already shown signs of improvement.

We should not be judging Allen against the veteran qb's in the league or even against the more developed rookie qb's.  We all knew Allen was a development draft pick.

Let's just chill and see what happens.

Seriously.  This roster is ****.  We are in full rebuild mode.  Last year too essentially.  Yet this team wins games.

Give this guy some actual talent and we will be a very good team.

Yes.  He has some issues.  And yes he shouldn't have anything to do with talent selection but he can coach.

He adjusts.  Doesn't yet mid game very well.  But game to game he fixes stuff.  Just as he did last year.

This team should rival the 0 and 16 browns last year yet here we are 2-3 with a green rookie QB a ****ty oline and no wrs.  He deserves some credit.

I agree 100%.  The defense has a great deal of talent,  the offense, not so much.  Sean has done more with less than any coach we have had since the millennium.  Why is the fact that so many on this site discount that we are a playoff teams from last year.   Sean is a solid coach and will only get better.

I don’t care how nutty it sounds - I think we can still make the playoffs in a weak AFC.

This was the worst part of our schedule, by far.  I think our defense can be a top unit.  If the offense can just figure out how to be average - and we saw that last week - we can compete with anyone in the AFC, except possibly the Chiefs.

I really like your optimism.  After what happened last season, anything is possible.

Everyone here (and pretty much anywhere NFL related) loves to overreact to everything positively or negatively. After the bad losses the Bills should fire everyone and trade Allen for a 7th if we could be so lucky. After the Vikings game to quote Rodney Dangerfield from the end of Caddy Shack "We're all going to get laid."

Coaches will often say they look at seasons in quarters so after 4 games what are you composed thoughts and impressions about the team thus far?

    Positives

    1- The defensive turn around.

After 6 God awful defensive quarters the team has been pretty good and consistent defensively. If this team has any hope of trying to win games and develop Josh Allen they will need a consistent defensive effort

    2- Josh Allen.

Josh Allen has not looked good in 2 out of his 3 starts. But he has flashed athletic ability and he has put together some really nice throws. I think that considering how raw a prospect Allen was coming out of college it isn't surprising to see Allen come out and look very uneven.

    3- Young defenders.

Phillips, Johnson, Milano, Edumonds, White, and the continued development of a young core of defensive players emerging gives hope that this strong defensive play can be sustained beyond this season. Hopefully Shaq gets added to that list of good young players.

    4- Zay Jones.

Zay hasn't light the world on fire but he is competently putting together a decent season, after Zay's mental breakdown and injury issues it is good to see him not only playing but probably becoming the teams best WR out of an abysmal core. I could honestly see Zay developing into a quality slot receiver.

    Negatives.

    1- Peterman.

The fact that Peterman is one snap away from playing is unforgivable. The fact that this staff got fooled by per-season Peterman twice is horrendous. I don't mind having Peterman as a third string QB but why on Earth have they not explored a veteran backup option?

    2- The O-line

The Bills might have the worst O-line in football. I know the All-22 has been a bit kinder to the O-line esp in the LA loss (no word on the Green Bay loss as I type this) but watching this team you can see they are losing the battle in the trenches rather consistently in every game but the Vikings game. Playing a rookie behind this O-line is something that could seriously stunt Allen's footwork development.

    3- The skill position core.

The WR core in particular is outright bad and might be the worst unit in the league certainly bottom 5. KB isn't doing much and Zay Jones putting together a decent season is probably the best thing going which says a lot. The rest of the team is Andre Holmes a JAG veteran and a bunch of young players not doing a whole lot. Clay and the tight ends are decent if you had good receivers but they have limited impact since the receiving core is awful.

    4- Shady might be done.

Shady was/is a dynamic offensive weapon, one of the things that could have made the skill position core's relative weakness palpable is if Shady was still an elite weapon out of the backfield. With his injury and at his age/miles it isn't looking to good for him early. Granted this is only 25% into the season so there is still plenty of time for him to turn it around but it is sad to see him get off to such a bad start.

Overall the Bills are who we thought they were a team that mortgaged veteran players to get out from under contracts and accrue draft capital. They then spent that draft capital on two trade ups to acquire Allen and Edumonds (Cordy Glenn and picks 21, 22, 53, 56, and 65 for Allen, Edumonds, and a 5th round pick.) Those trade ups and the massive dead cap really crippled the teams ability to build a more complete roster. If you trade away a lot of productive veteran players for draft capital (Which also incurs short term dead cap) and then do two big trade ups with that draft capital then there are going to be massive holes on parts of the roster.

The Bills are looking to be who we thought they probably were.  A team that has some key pieces in place but will have to wait until the dead cap clears in order to build up other parts of their roster.

The Bills are doing better than I imagined.   I figured they would be 0 - 4 at this point in the season.   I was not expecting a win before mid-season.   Allen is a work in progress.   He will have his good days and bad.  Fans needs to cut him some slack.  The hand wringing and panic are laughable.  Give the poor kid a season to learn the game.   He is showing maturity and poise.  He will make a lot of mistakes.   But he is our future.  Don't give up on him so soon.
