Great post, my family owned season tickets from 1960 until the late 1980's, I remember the mid 1970's when the Bills were back in contention and I have to agree with OJ's statement that the Bills were one of the best teams in the NFL in 1975. I don't think Ralph was committed to building a winning team during that era, however, he did cut loose some cash in the mid 1980's and built a dynasty. Well into the late 1990's he was still spending cash - we signed Jim Jeffcoat as a free agent from Dallas and paid him three million a year to rush the QB on third and long. The Bottom Line is the team is still here and he could of moved it!

You're right.  As Wilson came to grips with his mortality, I believe he did want to win it all.  He gave it everything he had during the mid 80's on.  I forgot about Jeffcoat.  He was a really good player for the cowboys.

  2. In a recent and exclusive interview conducted by the buffalo News with Simpson, OJ said that during his playing days Wilson did not want to build a championship team because then "everyone would want a raise".  I know OJ is not the most credible source, but living through those Bills teams of the 70's and looking back at the way Ralph managed it makes sense.  My family had season ticket from 1973 until I let them go in 2011.  I had moved to Las Vegas and could no longer get enough buyers to purchase the tickets.

Being in the stand and being one of the many fans shouting Juice, Juice, Juice was an incredible experience.  But like most bills fans, I gave my heart and soul to this team and anguished over every loss.  If Wilson really felt this way, I am kind of PO'ed.  It makes me more grateful that we have Pags as our owner.  I truly believe he wants to build a winner.

I did not see a thread started on this topic and I thought it was a good break from all of the "my college qb is better than your college qb"  threads that we have endured and will continue to do so until the draft.

So far, I like all of the moves the McBeane duo has made this off season.  No matter what happens between now and the draft, I have no doubts that our GM will do what is necessary to make this a better team.  If we don't trade up into the top 5 and grab one of the 'once in a lifetime' QBs, I'm sure it will be for a very good reason.  I think back about how the Eagles were able to beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl (how great was that?) and remember that even though their starting QB didn't play in the playoffs, the backup QB still managed to keep the team winning.  Was Foles that good?  Maybe.  I think the answer was more like they had a great team to begin with.

My point is if we don't get one of the Big 4 QBs in this draft, we still have the means to build a great team.  And that is just as important as the QB himself.  Trust the process.  We are either going to have a great QB and very good team or a very good QB and a great team.

    Flame away...

Thank you.   All the speculation on if we are moving up, who we are going to draft, etc... is mind numbing.

Mc Beane set this up for an epic fail.....they don't have any talent except at secondary which thank goodness he could not mess up.......QB got on the cheap , traded valuable picks for two broken down receivers. This regime is over their head when the losses come in buckets because of our good ole boy drafting the pitch forks will come out. We need quality football players and to date we got older, lighter( in more ways than one) ,and talent drained in fact we   went down in quality across the board  based on every thing they touched so far.2-14 here we come Buffalo Browns

Not a fan of the new regime?  They are restructuring the entire team to fit their vision.  Have some patience.  It will take a little time.

I will base this step by step from college to present.

College: AJ McCarron was easily the better college player.

Time as a back up QB: AJM won 50% of his games as a back up and should've won the playoff game vs the Steelers.

Taylor really didn't get much playing time and his trade value while with the Ravens was never talked about. Winner AJM.

At present Taylor has started 3 years in Buffalo and has ranked in the bottom 5 teams in passing yards for all 3 years. Their are a 100 other stats I could bring up but I will say his overall view as a QB is below average.

AJM has always been behind Andy Dalton, he has played well when Dalton has been injured. My opinion of AJM is that he will be the best QB out of all the FA QB's. I think he will be a upgrade over Taylor and is the better QB.

That is quite an endorsement for McCarron.  I hope you are right.

Just as many great fan as there are in Buffalo there are just as many loud mouths that think they know way more about football than they do. After the Jacksonville game I realized that we would have a new QB this year but how could you have anything but love for a guy who embraced the city went from carrer back up to 2x pro bowler and broke the playoff curse. It almost seems personal for some I wonder why

Great Post.  I realize the Tyrod detractors just want the bills to win, but you are right.  We owe a great deal to TT and I wish him only the pest in his future career.

    IMHO ...

I don't think McCarron was obtained to be a "bridge QB" (what ever the heck that is). McDermott is all about earning the right to compete. I think it was evident last season the Tylor was NOT the guy McDermott wanted to lead the Bills into the future, so I feel his and Beane's plan all along was to establish a QB room filled with young players with some sort of "upside" (what ever the heck that is) to compete for the starting job. That's not to say we aren't drafting a QB in the first round, or even trading up further for a "blue chip" (what ever the heck that means) QB. But keep in mind they will not let talent force them to over pay whatever value they have assigned to a particular player.

If I were to put on my Nostradumbass beanie, their plan is to trade up to pick #3 if their guy is available, and the Colts aren't expecting a kings ransom ... but I could easily see them staying pat at #12 and picking BPA until a QB coincides with their perceived value. I think their strategy is that it's more probable to succeed with three chances that one will stand out.

That is a good perspective.  I agree that McDermott and Beane are working their plan to perfection and will not overpay for players.

I don't know, I will let you know at the end of the season.

You are a man of vision.LOL

  8. Now that we have our "Bridge "QB, I got to thinking, did we trade Tyrod too soon?  I , for one, am glad that we signed AJ McCarron.  I am not a Tyrod hatter, but I can understand that McBeane wanted to move on from the Wrex experiment.  But  given the limited experience of McCarron and the fact that Tyrod did enough (with some luck) to get the bills to the playoffs, should we have kept TT as our Bridge?

Just joined up to share some thoughts on your new quarterback from a Bama alum and college football fanatic. I haven't followed the pro game closely since I watched my beloved Dan Marino, get owned by the early/mid 90's bills year after year, but I do keep up with the AFC casually.

AJ is a legend in Tuscaloosa, a town with no shortage of legends. Most folks I know put him ahead of guys like Stabler and Namath when it comes to greatest all time Bama quarterbacks. Here is a couple of things scouting reports might not mention.

    - Won 2013 Johnny Unitas and Maxwell awards.

-Finished 3rd in Heisman voting (I think)

-Led Bama to back to back Natty Championships...should probably have been a 3 peat if not for a kick six vs. Auburn

-Walked into Coach Saban's office as a TRUE FRESHMAN and wanted to know why he wasn't getting first team reps at practice...guy has balls and a ton of confidence.

-Broke down in tears on the sideline at LSU after throwing a game winning touchdown to TJ Yeldon in the closing moments. When asked why he was so emotional he replied "Because I want to win so bad FOR THESE FANS."

    - Got into a televised shoving match with his center during the national title game vs. Notre dame...the center wasn't snapping the ball on time and AJ was fired up...oh yeah it was in the 4th quarter and we were up by 30 points...kid plays with fire and passion.

    - Several former teammates have said publicly that there were many games where AJ refused to accept them taking a play off or loafing, even when they were up big most games. He is a fierce competitor.

    - I have an uncle in Cincy who claims that many in the Bengals organization (including former OC) thought AJ gave them a much better chance to win than Dalton, but Dalton was the "franchise" guy and getting the big bucks.

-Told a local radio station in Birmingham a couple of months ago that he would play a year for league minimum if he was given a true chance to win a quarterback competition, which was never the case in Cincy

-Never once said a negative thing about Dalton or the Bengals, in fact he defended Dalton publicly last season when everyone was calling for him to be benched. He is a great locker room guy.

Again, I realize none of this translates into wins at the pro level, just wanted to give you some insight from someone who has followed him closely since 2008 when he was heavily recruited by everyone. I don't understand the economics of the NFL, but it baffles me when I see fans clamoring for a guy like Baker Mayfield, who will embarrass himself and an organization at some point (grabbing his crotch at an opponent on national tv, DUI's, etc.) Just because they think he is a "franchise" quarterback. His college stats don't blow away AJ's, arm strength, intensity, and leadership may be a wash, but AJ is has more prototypical QB size. Character and professionalism can not be compared, it ain't even close. I just don't understand why fans are clamoring for an AJ "mini me" with character issues.

Anyway, Good luck this season, i hope AJ wins a ton of games for ya'll, at the very least I hope he is given a chance to be the guy, and not just a seat warmer for the likes of Baker Mayfield.

That was amazing of you to share your heartfelt feelings about your beloved quarterback.  One thing that we have in common is a passionate fan base.  We love our Bills every bit as much as you love the Tide.  Thank you,

Earlier today there were reports that the Patriots had made an offer to AJ. Later on the Boston Globe says there was no offer made. Perhaps the Hoody wanted AJ to go to the Bills and pretended he wanted him?

Even if that happened I like the signing. Hope we get a good QB in the draft as well. Go Bills!

For 5mil per year, we got a bargain.

There have been many reports saying the Colts and Bills have been in talks. Most believe that it's for a move up in the draft...as do I.

After seeing Sal's tweet about none of the FA QBs were there target it leads me to believe that the vet that they want to bring in is on someone's roster right now.

My thinking: Colts are assessing Lucks health. If he is up to snuff or at least trending right I believe Brissett would be moved for some picks. If we are already working a possible trade with Indy to move up, I would strongly consider giving up an extra 3rd or 4th for Brissett.

    Again, just my opinion.

HIs stats for 2017 very pretty good.  This could be a viable option.

Whoever they take I hope they go against the norm ignore the press  and slowly allow the rookie QB to play.  By that I mean let him have a series and if he does well next game or half a drive and as he shows he has it give him more.  You can't play musical QB's BS, everyone knows this guy will be the eventual starter no need to force it or destroy his confidence before he is really ready.

This is old school thinking.  It was the standard way to develop young qbs before salaries went crazy.  It is a good strategy.
