Yea well, forgive me as I have a strange way of getting my points across sometimes Fans look at the Titans and think. Oh, they suck! With some predicting a Bills blowout. The Wiz is not that bad a HC, and has found his franchise QB in Mariota. The Titans are coming off a bye week, and have had extra time to prepare. Then, If the Bills don't rein in those penalties...

The Raiders were a bad 2-12 team last year when the Bills were vying for a playoff spot in week 16. That Raider team also had a rookie QB, and were near last in defensive stats across the board. Yet the Bills lost that game 26-24! The point being is the Bills can't take this 1-2 team with a rookie QB lightly!

Carucci: Disconnect exists between DL and scheme
Nihilarian replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Believe it or not Kyle Williams is getting a positive grade dropping into coverage, and Jerry Hughes did manage to break up a pass to Rob Gronkowski. The players are fine, and its the scheme along with the penalties that needs to change IMO -
Gonna be interesting because the Titan defense is currently ranked 5th against the run, 1st against the pass, and 6th overall. Their offense in 9th overall, and they are playing at home. (IDC who they have played so far either). We still don't know if Karlos will play or will it be the Boobie & Boom show? Bills 22. Titans 17 Not many penalties on Buffalo, the defense shows up this game, and Tyrod has his way with roll outs, and runs!

Good stuff, and I agree. A few thoughts here. Its OK to be concerned about the Bills defense so far because most of us were expecting greatness, and not excuses! Rex Ryan has a pedigree of building top defenses, and his defense usually play great against Tom Brady. In his six years as the Jets HC he never allowed 466 passing yards to ole Tom! Brady didn't just suddenly start getting the ball out quickly, as he has been running the same offense his entire career. Rex Ryan admitted he made a mistake with his defense on Brady, as he went to a soft nickle coverage a lot in that game. Instead of getting heavy pressure on Brady he decided to try and have his DB's play a 10-15 yard cushion off the line. Because of that mistake his defense suddenly jumped to 31st in total defense, and 32nd against the pass. Those stats changed this last game to 22nd in total defense, but still 29th in passing defense. Those stats matter!! Just like the Bills playing against the #1 defense against the run in the Giants and they held true to those stats by holding the Bills to a 2.3 ypc avg. I suppose the anti stat fans will say that the 24 rushes for only 55 yards doesn't matter, 29th in pass defense after four games doesn't matter because this excuse, that excuse, another excuse, and BTW excuse, excuse, excuse! Is there still time for Ryan to field a Buffalo Bills top five defense this year, you bet! Will they? We honestly don't know, and if he continues to spew this crud that his defenses can't stop a QB with a quick release. News flash, Ryan Fitzpatrick has a very quick release too, and Ryan smoked Fitz when he was the Bills QB 2x in 2010, 2x in 2011, 1x in 2012. The Bills entire offense under Gailey was predicated on the quick, short pass, and guess what. He is back in the division as the Jets OC with Fitz as his QB!! Then, no other defense has played Tom Brady better then Rex Ryan from 2009-2014 in 2013 In both games the Jets lost by 3 points each. In 2014 each game was lost by one point, and two points. The last game against the Jets in 2014 in week 16 Brady didn't even pass for 200 yards. He went 25 of 35 for 182 yards-1 TD-1 INT. Rex Ryan himself has said he has never had this amount of talent on a defense, so freaking pardon me If I'm not happy about being 29th in pass defense after four games. The problem is not in the defensive secondary because they have played really well from what I've seen. The problem looks to be lack of D line rotation along with far to much dropping into coverage instead of finding different ways to get to the QB, and the penalties!! JMO -
If the Playoffs Started Today....

WW two was a must win! The Titans are a 1-2 team coming off a bye with extra time to prepare. They beat the Buc's and lost to the Browns, Colts. Stat wise they have a top 5 defense, and are 9th in total offense Everything will depend on which Bills team shows up. The Bills D that played the Patriots with the soft cover defense or the one that played Miami, NY Giants, and the Colts. The offense that started with passing roll outs or the one that kept trying to run into a stacked box. Here is hoping Rex Ryan didn't just put his foot in his big mouth again, and the Bills win this one in Tenn. Yep, especially if we kept giving ourselves 7 first downs -
The Boobie, Boom, and Wood show! Not playing the Giants #1 defense against the run this week! But Tennessee is ranked 5th !! However, the Titans are currently ranked #1 against the pass, and #1 in total defense

"Experts" Picks Week 5 vs the Titans
Nihilarian replied to CodeMonkey's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Its tough to feel good about this game when it seems the book is out there on the Bills. If they can clean up their game like they did against Miami, and really get after Mariota they have a shot. Interesting to read what the Titan fans are saying, http://www.musiccitymiracles.com/2015/10/6/9467523/titans-vs-bills-what-are-the-odds -
Does our offense fit our personnel?
Nihilarian replied to 2020 Our Year For Sure's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills matched poorly against the Giants as they have seen the running QB's in their conference with Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, RG3. With Washington winning the division with RG3 at QB the Giants needed to learn how to defend against the read option runs. Kinda why that 4th down run didn't work with Taylor. When the Bills went into a three TE run formation the NY Giants countered with five players on the line, and eight in the box. Thus stopping the Bills run game in its tracks. The Patriots stacked the box, and played tight coverage to the line for 3/4 of that game against the Bills and it successfully shot down Buffalo's offense for that period of time. They also managed to get a quick rush on the Bills QB for those eight sacks. What has been very disconcerting to me is what happened to the Bills offense in the first half against both the Patriots, and the Giants. Only 38 yards passing against the Patriots in the first half. Then against the Giants it was worse because they couldn't run either. Wow, only two first downs with 42 yards rushing, 36 yards passing in the first half against the Giants. The good news is that in both games the offense came around and got some decent yards, and scored in the second half of those games. Just not enough. It looks to me like Roman is making adjustments after the half, and they are working. Greg Roman needs to realize he doesn't have the same quality of players on the Bills offensive line that he had in SF. Since its to late to rebuild the offensive line this year. So yea, the Bills should start thinking outside the box , and try using a spread offense like Gailey used to do. I think more the problem is that Tyrod Taylor only has four game starts, and is learning as he goes. (growing pains) Things should get better the more experience he gets. Lets also not forget that two TD's were called back because of PENALTIES! -
Evaluating the remainder of the schedule
Nihilarian replied to Wazzu Bill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Man, I didn't think there was any way the Bills would lose to the 1-2 NY Giants, but they did! So many* penalties, and the Giants seemed to have an answer against both the Bills offense and defense. At this point i just want them to beat the Titans! Seems plausible. Here is hoping the Bills fix their penalty problem -
Communication issues on defense
Nihilarian replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thanks Hopeful Said it much better then my attempt. Hope this doesn't put you in league with Lucifer, or make you a pariah. -
Nice! You make it sound like I don't know what I'm looking at, or talking about. The stats tell me this isn't a very good defense at this point. The bad tackling, and with so many penalties also tells me they aren't a very disciplined unit either! But, since you, and others seem to see things differently. I'm just wasting my time in this discussion.

No, it doesn't help! Allow me to reiterate. This years Buffalo Bills defense is currently ranked 22nd in total defense, 29th in downs-29th in passing defense-28th in receiving defense, and 19th in sacks. The defensive game plan against the Patriots this year was just plain bad in my view. Dropping into coverage, and allowing a franchise worst 466 yards passing didn't work. If you guys are content with the defense that's fine, revel in the unsatisfactory performance so far.

Communication issues on defense
Nihilarian replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree, Schwartz's scheme seemed so dominate ending up #1 in giving up passing TD's, and #3 in passing yards allowed. Then the #1 team in sacks too. This years defense is currently near last in passing yards allowed, -
What the heck guys, they have gone from 4th overall in the league last season to now 22nd in total defense. Then last year they led the league in sacks being #1, and they are currently 19th. 29th in downs-29th in passing defense-28th in receiving defense, and this with being a plus 4 in turnover differential. If that isn't bad I don't know how you can paint it with any other color. With the hiring of a defensive genius with all the defensive talent on the team all I read off season were the expectations of having a dominate #1 overall defense, and this years defense is far from that. That stat of 29th against the pass in a passing league says bad to me.

I get what you are saying. Dave Wannstedt would just rush the front four all game while using the rest in coverage, and his scheme wasn't very good either. I've seen big 300 lb defensive linemen sniff out a screen pass or a pass to the back in the flat and make a play. What I have a problem with is a 300 lb linemen dropping straight backwards to cover a zone instead of doing what he does best and that is taking on blockers, and getting to the QB. When you drop that 4th linemen into pass coverage you are just making it easier for the 4-5 offensive players to block the three D linemen coming, and give the QB any extra time to find an open receiver. I realize Kyle ran a 4.4-40 nine years ago, but the man is now 32 years old I also realize Jerry Hughes is 6'2'' 254, and the size, speed of a LBer, but I'd much rather see the man pass rushing Tom Brady over attempting to cover Rob Gronkowski. At least spy the guy with Manny Lawson who runs a 4.43 40 Maybe its just me, but I want more sacks! Rush the front four all the time, and crowd the line while playing man. Always send one more rusher then the offense is keeping in to block. Then send an extra blitzer in a DB or LBer, and keep the offense off balance in not knowing where the extra guy is coming from. This laying back in coverage sucks IMO, and the QB usually find someone open to throw the ball to anyway.

Jeremy White: Bills vs. Giants All-22 Review
Nihilarian replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Good stuff! What gets me is that if the Bills secondary was good enough to get the job done then why are the Bills using their D linemen to drop into coverage on certain plays? Now i get running from a 4-3 to a 3-4 with Kyle Williams out and then rushing only three. But Jeez, Kyle Williams dropping into pass coverage is something i'll never understand. The Bills rush with four, and the Giants keep six in to defend, and Manning gets the ball out despite the coverage. Looks like the Bills from four are not earning their pay, and either is the new DC with some of those defensive calls After four games the Bills defense has only 7 sacks, and 3 by the front four! WTH happened to the defense pass rush this year? -
