The much maligned deterioration of the passing game...

Better be versus the 31st ranked defense in the NFL. The buffalo doesn't then they are in big trouble. -
Week 9 - Predict the score (Seattle @ Buffalo)
Billsfan1972 replied to RiotAct's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If the Bills don't score 30+ and put up 350+ in the air it would be an abject failure. The Bills are at home against a team that's defense has given up 434, 370, 461, 310, 248, 360 & 299 passing. Perefect conditions and a 38-35 win.....😁 -

Again here is just how bad the Seattle pass defense has been..... Seattle has allowed 434 (Ryan), 397 (Newton), 461 (Dak), 312 (Fitz), 248 (Cousins), 360 (Murray), 299 (49'ers JV Offense)..... If McD isn't looking for 350 passing minimum (and Allen isn't exploiting it), that will tell you all you need. -
Agree to disagree. They've been very passive the past 4 weeks. But give them credit they're 6-2. Yes the next two games vs. bad D's are litmus tests. Seattle has allowed 434 (Ryan), 397 (Newton), 461 (Dak), 312 (Fitz), 248 (Cousins), 360 (Murray), 299 (49'ers JV Offense)..... If McD isn't looking for 350 passing minimum, that will tell you all you need.

And with Diggs, Brown, Beasley, Moss.... The Bills have the weapons. They're playing maybe the worst defense e in the nfl, and are scared of Wilson vs beating their defense -
The issue is they then go out & play passive & post-game explain that was their game plan. I am frankly really tired of hearing this over & over. Would be nice to see a win & say afterwards "We went out there with the intention of scoring 30+ points against one of the top offenses in football". Sure but as said, they then go out & play that way.

This has been my concern, particularly when talking about teams "on par" or perceived better then Buffalo. And this goes back to day 1. However now I consider the Bills a good/very good team. When they talk about the game it seems always that the Bills have to limit the opposition and control the flow of the game to minimize their "chances". They always sound passive. I know it is about not offering "bulletin board" material, but then the Bills go out and play "scared" imo. This was so evident last year vs. Baltimore, Pitt & many other games. Last week too vs. NE, they should have put up 30+, but were commited to the ground game & let NE (vastly inferior team) stick around & almost pull it out. Seattle is a perfect example & let's see how it plays out. The Seahawks are on the road, one of the worst defenses in the NFL that has been shredded every week through the air and this week should be absolutely no different. If it plays to script the Bills should be prepared that Seattle will score 30+ & the Bills should game plan and prepare to score 40+. However if they try to play like they did vs. NE, KC or Tenn they will be beaten. I expect the Bills to win, but only if they score 35+.

Listen to the Coaches and they always sound passive wrt the Offense when playing teams like KC & NE. They need to go out & assert themselves and that meas using your best asset Allen. To hear the dropping 7 men crap, means beat them underneath, swing passes, screens..... Sure mix in the run and if it works use it, but don't over do it. Allen's legs too. Vs. Seattle the plan should be simple..... We're going top outscore them by putting 42 up. My concern is they will think outscoring them is TOP and that they can win 24-21. -

No the Bills played a very weak schedule last year. I just don't think the coaching staff is as smart as you do. My concern is and repeated over rand over is they do t want to assert themselves for 4 quarters on offense and continually seem to scheme to keep the score close as opposed to "we're scoring 40, try and stop us". -

But were they great players when the defense was ranked second in the league? Again it's a case of sucking and blowing at the same time . -

I'll agree a good play works, a bad play doesn't and that is pretty much all we see. I pointed out a series above that put the Bills in a hole & NE immediately scored & tied the game. Squeaking by NE sorry says to me there were not enough good palys called on offense & the defense allowed too many yards & plays to NE. Overall I'd say the Defense's playcalling has been suspect, especially on 3rd down. A perfect example was the 3rd & 10 where Burkhead (?) got a first down on a run. The Bills are 30th (interesting is Tennessee is the worst & Carolina allowed NO to make like 14 of 16 vs. them) and the Bills have played NYJ twice.... https://www.espn.com/nfl/stats/team/_/view/defense/stat/downs/table/miscellaneous/sort/thirdDownConvPct/dir/asc -

And look at my thread after week 4, when I said I turning the corner on McD...... Yep it was primarily due to the Offense actually performing to what I thought they were capable of. The last 4 weeks I've thought instead of asserting themselves the Offense played passive (take what they give you mentality). I hope that changes this week. -

Yep & you are the same people who were happy with McD from day one & are not wavering. I will repeat fro Teef's sake😜 2014-16 24-24 and 2017-19 25-23...... The teardown that they explained was needed, not all of us bought..... Keep repeating that line and eventually you'll believe it. None of us had a crystal ball and can say for a fact how 2017-19 would have played out under a different coaching staff, different moves, different philosophy. But keep repeating "The Process, The Process, The Process"...... -
I will disagree as I am an optimist on everyone except KC. Pitt is really making many mistakes and have been lucky a few games. Tenn is like us, good, not great & Baltimore if they're behind, they too are in trouble. Again I'm high on the Bills once the coaching improves. The losses (and last 4 games) show their deficiencies.

Building always is a buzzword to give us time..... I get it. However this is year 4. 2017-19 had the same record as 2014-16 so sorry as a simpleton that means they are pretty much the same. Yes two playoffs and 2019 the Bills had a cupcake schedule. I expect much more now. Building is just a cheap excuse now. -

About as annoying as you finding my posts and heckling.... Add oldmanfan..... You guy's have so little expectations of the Bills. Sorry I think bigger and watch games to be excited and come away exhilerated. Must be something about 1987-1995, when the Bills were a lot of fun to watch, the Offense one of the best, most dynamic in the league and a defense that had name players..... -

How many times are you going to repeat Winning is difficult..... We get it. Until this year (and we'll see how the season plays out), the Bills seldom blow out teams, are blown out a fair bit of times, struggle to beat teams they should & have in the three years with McD, beaten 5 teams with records over .500 (and I think 3 playoff teams). I don't expect blowout wins the next two weeks. I'd like to see wins, entertaining games & the Offense be more like weeks 1-4 (not 5-8). I have little expectations from the defense against these two teams. If also you want me to pick specific playcalling vs. NE, I'd say deep in our zone third quarter, 1st down lined up to run & NE knew it & a conservative call & 2 yards. Second down in according to most blustery conditions a long pass incomplete & then a throwawy on third. Kick, short field & NE scored. To me that first down play set the tone. -
When I turn on ESPN, or any radio station in the car, or watch TV on Monday, like most Fans I want to see my team talked about. Sorry WGR doesn't cut it for me. Yep it was fun watching Highly Questionable, Around the Horn or PTI..... and the Bills discussed (vs. NE or GB, NO, TB, Cowboys, KC, Balt and the usual suspects). I'd say that is a normal reaction. I don't like the way the Bills have played the last 4 weeks and surprise, neither has the National Media and thus they've cooled on them.

Shaw66 I really do like your reviews and you do have an innate understanding both sides of the ball. Where we continue to disagree on is coaching. I know you won't convince me as I am stubborn, but I just am not thrilled with McD's coaching and as I've stated everywhere. As happy as I was with the coaching & Allen the first 4 weeks, the last 4, I've seen regression and a lot of old habits and playcalling from the coaching staff. The defense is an issue, but I won't question that side now. What has McD & Dabol done in your opinion that really gives you confidence in their scheming and playcalling going forward? Do you not also not expect a huge offensive performance the next two weeks, based on how weak Seattle's & Arizona's defenses are and if not does that not concern you? -

Allen has been fine. Coaching & playcalling to me has been very suspect. -
This again goes back to McD & a false sense of security about the Defense, which was ranked very high the past two years, but also were recipients of weak schedules & bad teams. Last year name a top flight passing Qb they faced (Tom Brady with a weak receiving core, Lamar not a great passer, Dak who threw for 350).... It actually was just horrible, which resulted in overestimating their ability, and now are seeing what probably was always there. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/buf/2019.htm

How about 2 wins vs. one of the worst offenses in the league NYJ, another vs. NE coming off games they scored 10, 12 & 9 poiints and moving the ball at will vs. Buffalo. Yes good offenses with KC, LAR & Tenn, two of which gashed them on the ground and the third scored at will (yes some short fields, but converted every time).
