I gave you my opinion previously: it is a good memoir. It shows the kind of nuanced view of What Went Wrong that is now completely absent from the new JD Vance, the one who sucks up to Trump.

I like how Trump - both times (2016 and now) - chose a Jewish VP. Oh, wait ... he didn't. He chose VPs who say this is a Christian nation. Jews should feel validated.

Someday the history of this election will be written. Was this a gambit by the Biden people, "we'll show you he's still got it." And Kamala's real mission - "to examine the root causes of immigration from the Northern Triangle" - was so stupid to begin with. I know people who've worked in this field for a long time. There's always push factors and pull factors in immigration. Push: the Northern Triangle countries suck. They're poor (all), beset by gang crime (mostly El Salvador back then, and Honduras then and now), racist (Guatemalan indigenous people), and corrupt (all). Pull: they all had close or extended family or people from their neighborhoods/villages who came to the US and were allowed in and allowed to stay pending completion of their asylum hearings, which could be years away. And those friends/relatives all said life was better here and worth the long (and sometimes dangerous) trip. There's my White Paper Executive Summary.

I'm afraid you're right about the last part. Pete is sharp, clear, smart, and a great contrast to the new-style JD Vance. And Vance actually has less relevant experience than Pete. But I just don't think it'll work.

No, that one wasn't edgy. That one relied on a contrast: Democratic add shows family getting ahead through public benefits. Commenter (me) points out that the other side has shown no interest in reforming those benefit programs because their voters actually like them/subsist on them. I'll save edgy for the appropriate moment. As always.

It is stupid. Which is why I can't wait for Mr. Hillbilly Elegy to call for a reduction in SNAP benefits to his Hillbilly supporters. Or to take Mountain Dew off the list of approved SNAP groceries.
