  1. I actually agree with you on this one!! Moorman was once great but he is done. The kid from Harvard is there but there has to be better options out there. It is weird that Moorman is the favorite to have a role as an NFL punter at this point in his career.

Just curious, who are the better options out there(and why are they better). Why do you think the Bills have this punter from Harvard in camp?
  2. Yes i did . But is he overated ? or just a Buffalo Bills Icon ? I think he played f'n fantastic last year for an undersized rook who played every down at the Def QB postion .

I think we fans just enjoy having such a solid and impressive player on the field for us .

I think he had a good year, with some great moments, but some very bad moments too. I like him, don't get me wrong, but I think many fans realized he couldn't help the team long term in the middle. I'm expecting good things from him, but would have to say from many fans perspective, still overrated. Still good though.

When fans ignore the negatives and only focus on the positives - that equals over rating someone. That's my perspective on this.

  3. Strange, how they can bring in competition from Fred and CJ and have 2 more backups who could challenge for playing time, but we can't bring in anyone to compete with E.J ? Why is it because he's to fragile ? Better competition means better players. If E.J flames out then so be it, he wont be the first, and we go looking for another QB next year in round 2 since we have no round 1 pick.

Not strange at all. Fred is old and FA after this year, CJ is FA after this year. It is a wise move to bring in others. Brown has potential starters ability.Staff has made a commitment to EJ, and even if they wanted competition, there isn't much out there. We have a starter and competent backups at QB, that's acceptable. Not many QB's unsigned with #1 long term QB potential.
  4. Where do you think they would play during a retro-fit? That might, ultimately, be a viable option, but I think a temproray location would be a serious issue. There is no stadium locally (southern ontario, wny, cny) that is close to NFL caliber.

Does anyone know what a 'retrofit' would entail? Can't judge how long it would take if we don't know what needs to be done. Does it need a total makeover??? I have no idea what a retrofit would change - more suites , different location for the suites.....
  5. Like many fans, I enjoy being optimistic during the off season. But I don't like to let my optimism get carried away as that only leads to disappointment and bitterness.

(I reserve my unrealistic optimism for my thoughts on women )

So Jerry Hughes at 254 lbs, is the proper size to play as a situational pass rushing LB, and the Bills only want to play him at DE. In college that can work because of the smaller lines but rarely in the pros.

    Comments?

How a player like Hughes is used is usually dictated by the situation - passing situations , it's a lot easier to get him involved - running situations, you might see someone else in there. I think the 4-3 v 3-4 discussion gets overdone a bit. Players line up all over and the coaches react to that particular game, situation , down...., and many players are capable of handling multiple responsibilities. I don't think we should worry about Hughes too much. Defense should be solid barring injuries. Schwartz is a good coach, he'll know best how to play this.
  6. How so? All he has to do is be AS effective at his natural college position without having to fight off blockers to make plays

Because as most people here have noted, yet don't feel it's an issue. His play declined considerably last season, our run defense up the middle suffered greatly and management felt we needed to make a change at inside LB. I'm not against Kiko, but I think the hype has covered up much of the performance issues we saw last year. It's become sort of a sin to do anything but praise him. The facts are, most of his impressive stats with sacks and take aways happened in the first few games of the season, in the second half he wasn't very effective. I'm sorry that I will upset a lot of people but I think that's the case. If he doesn't improve on his second half performance from last year, it will be a problem. I like Kiko, I expect him to improve and play well, I'm just admitting to what everyone saw but are afraid to say.

Nobody blocks outside linebackers? He just gets to run free all day - nice.
  7. And then see it instantly get cut in half after taxes are due?

People are ignoring that little tidbit that he'd probably owe a big chunk of change, as his cost basis was likely very low.

I'm not sure if people are ignoring the tax implication or just don't really see it as an issue we need to be concerned with. Do you think Pegula is going ' oh crap I forgot about taxes, now I can't bid on the team.' I'm gonna take a wild stab at this and assume they now how much money they need and how to get it.
  8. Marv having the meat and potatoes of his KC career be .500 after being good enough to get a HC shot is very dissimilar to Crossman being ranked in the bottom 3-4 units for most of his career as a special teams coach in the nfl spanning a decade and multiple teams including our own. He's been 30th, 30th, and 29th his last 3 years.

In Detroit he was able to have his team that he coached for several years have blunders the likes of which I've never seen - one guy took a knee at the 5 on a kick return. And that wasn't the low point of a season that he gave up touchdowns in unheard of rates at times.

While his unit should be better this year, I think a strong coach would have this group in the top 5-10 across the board and Crossman more than likely sees them underachieve and be simply in the middle of the pack. Good enough to buy a year but unfortunately for us still not getting the most out of the talent he has. While past track record isn't 100% indicative of future results- I'd venture few do a 180 ten years into their career. Possible, but not likely.

That's a guess based on nothing more than your opinion that Crossman is no good. You have nothing regarding actual performances to base that prediction on. I think we will have a good idea after this season if he can coach this team well or not.
  9. I think that the two most would agree on is an upgrade at punter and coach. Hopefully Dixon and graham help solidify coverage and we have a solid kicker and good return men.

When we hired Marv as coach , based on his past with the Chiefs I thought it was a lousy choice, obviously I was wrong. Since then I've stopped assuming that a coach will duplicate his teams performance wherever he coaches, it's based on talent, the situation and sometimes a crapshoot. It's easy to **** on the coaches when the team doesn't perform well, but easy doesn't mean right. Carpenter had a fantastic year after not being able to find a job elsewhere, if he had a bad year, Crossman would get criticized for it. I guess I'm tired of listening to people who when it really comes down to it(myself included) have no clue as to how to properly coach a team and therefore aren't qualified to critique. I know it's what fans do, but sometimes we sound really stupid. I think this is one case. He is not here because he is Marrones friend, being comfortable with a coach and his style are good reasons to have him on your staff, you need to work well with someone. Give him the talent and let's see what he can do. When a team lacks depth like we did last year, generally special teams suffer. Our depth is better and we can focus some acquisitions for ST. I think we will see a big improvement this coming season.
  10. One must reasonably consider the fact that scheme also had something to do with this. Pettine's scheme was clearly designed to create chaos and force sacks and turnovers, but those may have come at the expense of a decent run defense.

I see Schwartz and Spikes (and even Pepper Johnson) as a combo deal -- all will directly impact this weakness.

I think it's the players, no DC would have a scheme that ignores stopping the run. Pettine worked with what he had and that was weak inside LB's
  11. Maybe, but 55 and sunny isn't worth dealing with 90-115 degree temps for 3 months+ in the summer...not to me at least...

At least we can go outside and enjoy the summer here, not hide indoors from 9am to 7pm every day...I mean what kind of craziness is that??

104 and sunny today - heading to the pool shortly. Wasn't 'hiding' indoors- i was working. I'll never move back to Buffalo - I like buffalo a lot, but lived there 35 years, I know the weather sucks.
  12. I know there is a "fiduciary responsibility" there but I thought I read that the trustees were committed to not selling to a suitor who wanted to move the team, regardless. Whether Golisano offers $1B or a guy worth 31B who wants to move it to LA but offers $4b, they were going to sell to the highest bidder who shows they will keep the team here. Sounds like Poloncarz is questioning that, and Brandon can't comment.

The Chargers should move to LA. Their stadium and fan base are crap there, they can't sell out, and they have fans all over SoCal. They need a new stadium, can't get one, and are on a year to year lease with Qualcomm. Someone please move there!

But there is no stadium in LA either. Where will they play?
  13. The other NYS US Senator.

From a political standpoint, she is creating political suicide by not creating a united front, standing behind Schumer at conferences, It is important for her to let Schumer and Cuomo grandstand, but she should be making the trips and stand behind them stating we are all together during Q & A.

She won't get one vote out of Western NY if she does not. If I were her opponent in re-election would blast her daily on this point. If there is one thing Buffalonians are passionate about is the Bills.

The Bills stadium situation is not a huge issue outside of the WNY or with non Bills fans. I'm hoping she has more important things to work on. She is very busy and has done good things in her position. She is undeserving of criticism in this instance.
  14. I don't know about total rebuild, but losing Drury and Briere -- if nothing else, very much the heart and soul of the team -- kind of pushed things in a direction that retaining Vanek at premium dollars was clearly not going to solve.

The object is the Cup. You do whatever you need to to get there, even if it means taking a step back to move forward. They tried doing it piecemeal for many years after finally having hit on some leadership that worked.

And I fully realize that we're engaging in hypotheticals here, but the timeline might not have been so tight if there had been available ammunition to acquire Stamkos. That kid was just about as close as you can get to an instant hit.

Now this I hadn't realized - very good information, and thanks for it.

That probably makes it even more unforgivable to not make this move, because you are really getting a much wider sample of the trade partner's up and down swings -- and a better chance at some lottery picks.

I guess I would take the opposite view. To assume lottery picks 8 years down the line would have been a big gamble. The assumption would be Vanek would help the Oilers and they would likely build around him. It's a gamble, at the time I wanted to keep Vanek. Given a do over, sure, take the picks, but we don't have that luxury.
  15. NFL draft picks pay off way earlier than NHL picks. I assume these #1 picks would have been 2008-2011.

We drafted 5 guys in the first round in those years. Myers, Ennis, Kassian, Pysyk, and Armia. Four more of those guys - with two of them still pretty much in Rochester, we're still in the same place.

It would not have been 4 years of consecutive picks. It is every other year.
