  1. Is he just the latest whipping boy for chronic complainers? Surely people aren't complaining based on preseason?

Last year he had the greenest group of QBs in the nfl to work with, and all of them started games. He rightly focused on running the ball to set up play action. The bills finished 19th in ypg, which is damn good considering the first year of the system AND going through the QB carousel.

    Enlighten me please.

I agree with you. Let's not forget the injuries to our RB's last year either. I was impressed how he held it together last year and never seemed to panic with all the injuries to key players. However, I'm not sold on him totally, I don't like the hurry up offense when Manuel still has a ways to go to be a solid QB. I don't question the play calling.... everyone criticizes the play if it doesn't work . He does deserve more of a chance than he has been given by many.
  2. I think they just mean that--as a former OLmen and OL coach--that's his primary area of knowledge.

this I can agree with. My point is that just because we have a former lineman as coach, it doesn't mean our emphasis about the line would be any different than any other team. Obviously , there are teams with great lines out there and the head coach was not a lineman.

    Maybe I'm just too grumpy.

  3. There are 3 official starters on the OL imo. Glenn at LT, Wood at C and Henderson at RT (what a steal in the draft he was). The guard positions are where we are struggling.

I don't think those positions are fixable unless we bring in a new body like "yesterday". I had high hopes for Hairston manning the RT position so Henderson could back him up and maybe learn the LG position to be the trio of Glenn, Henderson and Wood from left to right, but it's not the way it panned out.

Marrone is the supposed OL specialist so I hope he figures out who the best 2 linemen for the Guard positions are soon cuz the season is pretty much around the corner.

Looks like Pears is who he's comfortable with at RG so I guess my vote goes for CW at LG cuz Cyrus is not who I want holding that position at all. Cyrus looks slow and I just don't see the potential in him especially as a Guard.

No he's not. He just used to play that position.
  4. Are you serious? He came to Buffalo,a team with a decent offensive line heralded as an offensive line guru. Reportedly he has worked with the offensive line in camp. Yesterday we saw the results. Abysmal. If we don't win 8 games this year, simplysend the whole staff packing.

I've asked this a number of times. Who, with any credibility heralded Marrone as a offensive line guru? I read from some writers and fans with no clue thinking that because Marrone was a offensive lineman somehow our line would be special, as if no other team hires former lineman to coach their lines.
  5. An ideal backup is supposed to get you through a few games. Nothing more than that. That's why it seemed like Thad would be a good backup. Also, there are guys like Fitz and Reich. They are both very good backup Qbs. But if they are forced to play a lot of games, your team is in trouble.

Ponder seems like a smart dude and could be a good voice for EJ. It just sucks about the Firz situation because he was perfect for the role.

I just don't think there are quality backups anymore. Not enough starters let alone backups. If your starter is down, you are pretty much done.
  6. Ponder is a very bad starting qb. He would be a good backup. And he has a hot wife. This deal would make sense.

And I know it's not popular but I like Hogan. He isn't as good as Woods but I could see Hogan being a solid wr on this league. He is very raw still. The Vikes should take this deal if it was offered.

She has a better arm than her husband. http://thebiglead.co...retty-good-arm/

Why would you think a bad starting QB makes a good backup? I don't see the logic. Will his interception rate go down? TD's go up? Will he become a better QB with less playing time and less practice time? i'm not saying you are right or wrong regarding Ponder, just don't understand the logic behind it.

  7. Hear me out. ;) Full disclosure, I hate trade idea threads and don't know why I started one.

I don't even think Christian Ponder is any good, although a decent veteran backup and a lot better than what we have.

Hogan is causing more problems than he is solving. The Bills to me are extremely dangerous with the four headed monster of Sammy, Mike, Robert and Marquise. Keeping Woods off the field in lieu of Hogan is a big mistake and something I doubt they will be doing much once the season starts. You're going to want only 5 active and Easley should be one of those five. Keep TJ on the team in case Goodwin gets hurt.

Ponder is a veteran who you can coach to just be a game manager. He's played enough. He stinks if you want to be your savior or to throw for 300 yards a game but we don't need him for that. He knows EJ already and can probably help him.

The Vikings are having problems with Jerome Simpson and could use a decent WR with some clear upside. There is enough tape on Hogan now to see he can run routes and catch the ball and just the fact he is taking so much time from Robert Woods should let them know the Bills coaches are serious about him.

I'm sorry, but Jeff Tuel stinks and Thad seems to have regressed. Whaley is not afraid to pull the trigger. Ponder is not great or even very good as a starter so he is no threat to EJ, but a far better temporary answer than we have now if EJ goes down for a half or a game or even 2-3.

There are not a lot of good options around the league. IMO we need a veteran game manager backup without a rag arm.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but just curious. What do you expect out of a backup QB? What do you think Ponder offers that our QB's don't. I know it's not everything, but Lewis had a higher QB rating the Ponder last year, Ponder threw more INT's than TD's. He's never really been any good as a starter, why would he fare better as a backup with considerably less practice time than he is used to getting.

Not saying that any of these guys are like Frank Reich, but he looked awful when he played during preseason and didn't look good for a bit in his regular season appearances in relief, but much better when he started. It's very difficult to be a good backup, but what I believe is most important is familiarity with the system. That is why you see backup's sticking around longer than you think they should.

  8. Why doesn't Mary just step in and end all these rumors. Really? Does she need more money?

I'm guessing she is ignoring all the rumors, which is probably a good idea for the rest of us. Bids will be submitted in 2 weeks, we will know who will own the team shortly after that. Let's watch some football in the meantime and relax.

And it's really not a matter of 'does she need the money' it's her property for sale, she will get what she can. If she was really in it for the money, she wouldn't have a clause making it virtually impossible for the new owner to move the team. That is probably costing her a few hundred million - leave her be.

  9. The offense seems to be very predicatable pre-snap. There is very little deception, either with the offensive personnel on the field, or the situation. Rarely is anyone in motion. Hackett's offense comes across as a very basic vanilla offense, similar to our defense two years ago. Line em up, and hopefully we can out execute the other team. This issue is magnified in the red-zone, which is why we struggle. I think EJ and the offense could definitely benefit from some creative and unconventional play calls and formations from time to time. Hopefully the regular season will bring this, or we might be in for another frustrating year on offense.

Deception isn't what wins, it's execution. It seems foolish to think you can fool the defense. You have 2 options, run or pass. If you are better then the other team, you will execute your plays. Look how often we knew teams were going to run on us last year and we couldn't stop them. No deception needed.
  10. Throwing a deep ball you are more likely to get hurt than throwing a 15 yard out or a slant? Not sure I follow the logic of not practicing a deep ball because the line is not exactly where you want it. So your saying assuming EJ stays healthy and the line is just so we can start throwing deep balls by when? Week 12?

You must stand in the pocket longer in order to get a deep pass away at the right time. I think because the line has been in an experimental mode all camp with players changing position, the QB is more at risk sitting back there for a longer period of time. So yes, the injury risk is higher the longer the QB has to stand in the pocket.
  11. After watching a few preseason games I now remember what our real achilles heal was last year and it wasn't Manuel. I know it is just preseason however there are two troubling aspects of his play calling he has not corrected.

    1. Not letting EJ throw the deep ball- One of the reasons the Bills said they drafted him is his arm strength. Yet Hackett does not let EJ throw the deep ball in game settings. How will he ever utilize one of his strengths if he cant practice in GAME SETTINGS!

    2. On third and fourth and short running plays out of the shotgun- Hackett is tipping his hand that he is going to throw the ball. This makes it much much easier on the defense. On the off chance that you are going to run the ball you are not allowing the RB to gain the momentum he needs to plow through the line which is why we are always getting stuffed when he does run in these situations.

My question is where is Marrone the former offensive "guru" of the Saints in all of this.

They probably haven't thrown deep during the preseason because the line play has been poor and it exposes Manuel to injury.

I don't think using the shotgun tips off anything, like you said, they do run off of it so it they think its a pass then it's a run.....I think getting the ball 3 yards behind the line is plenty of room to get momentum,

I've heard Marrone called an offensive guru a few times. What is this based on? That he had Drew Brees as his QB? Hardly qualifies as a guru.

My opinion is the offense will be greatly improved this year. If the line play is better that obviously will help. Also, we have better WR to help.

Let's wait for the regular season to start before we criticize.

  12. +1. It's only when Marrone, the offensive line specialist, took over than Urbik and Pears (and Spiller and Stevie Johnson and Chandler) started to stink. Coincidence? And don't blame it on Manuel because Fitz is not any better than Manuel.

How is Marrone considered an offensive line specialist any more than any other former offensive line coach. Do we even know if he was a good line coach? I think it's rather naive to think that just because Marrone was a O-Line coach or a former lineman that the players will be better because of it or that the team would put more emphasis on the line than a team without a former lineman as coach.
  13. In 2 years though? It's not as if they have hit an age wall or been injured.

I don't want to turn this into an EJ thread, but one thing fitz did well was make the offensive line look better than they probably are.

yes in 2 years. Not every player is capable of having a solid 10 year career. Limited ability, injuries and probably other factors account for the drop off. Some are just not good enough for a extended period of time. Every player is unique.
  14. You know, it's amazing that professional scouts and GMs of NFL teams cannot figure out who might be able to play in the league before they draft them. Imagine if an engineer was this dumb and didn't know how to build the foundation of a bridge.

The guy the Bills pick in 2nd round is a dud and the one they pick in the 7th is starting! Just amazing.

We need to hold the enthusiasm a bit on Henderson - the talent has always been there. He messes up off the field. So far so good on that end, but his ability was never really a big question mark, it was his attitude. And it was a big enough problem to scare away every other team. Remember , he was busted smoking pot at the combines. Not too sharp.
  15. I would love to see us give Tebow a shot. At this point there can only be upside..

actually, it could get a lot worse, you see , tebow really is not good at all. He has trouble throwing the ball, that is a problem for a QB. His last season as a starter he fumbled 13 times, i think 12 INT's , sacked 33 times, roughly 50% completion rate. Would you sit back and just enjoy those kind of numbers from a Bills QB?
  16. If I had to guess I'd predict our opening day Oline will be Glenn-Williams-Wood-Urbik-Pears. It's not the sexy pick, but probably the right one. Rookie OLs are rarely upgrades over average veterans.

you are probably correct. Have to wonder if Glenn will be able to play every snap from the beginning, so Henderson should see playing time. Also, I think Urbik and Pears would be on a short leash, hope the other players improve with practice as the season wears on.
