  1. In defense of Steely Dan (the band not the TSW poster) they aren't a rock band. To judge them by rock standards is ridiculous. They are stylistically closer to Duke Ellington than the Rolling Stones. Even if you don't care for musical proficiency (an odd thought I have to say) you might want to try to appreciate their compositions, arrangements and lyrics. There are very few who in popular music who can touch Donald and Walt when it comes to composing and arranging. They have had an influence on rock (for better or worse) because many, if not most, trained musicians have a great deal of respect for Steely Dan. Edit: I should have said "To judge them using a rock sensibility is ridiculous."
  2. Not really. As a broadcast company they use the PUBLIC airwaves and are required to operate in the public interest, convenience and necessity.
  3. Smoke is terrific. Blue in the Face is "interesting", to be kind.

  5. I'm thinking a project like this should be avoided when you are drunk. So, with that in mind, I think it is best to get someone else to do it.
  6. I remember several years ago, when I lived on Long Island (sheesh, that might have been 10 or more years ago), I went to a supermarket and was shocked by what I saw. The place was JAMMED. I have never seen a grocery store half that busy. The lines for the register went most of the way down the grocery isles. Most had their carts completely packed: gallons of water, multiple packages of toilet paper, etc. Needless to say, I abandoned any hope of shopping there, but inquired on the way out, "What in hell is going on here?" The response was, "Didn't you hear? It's going to snow!" Now, this is on Long Island where snow is not all that uncommon. I can just imagine what it's like where you are.
  7. Of course you know. She most certainly cannot be classified as a great guitarist.
  8. Wow, just found out. (Thanks Bullpen.) This is completely unacceptable! I demand the Sphere of Beer get healthy ASAP! Let me know what I can do.
  9. Schoen is a great player. In his Santana days, and the very early Journey albums, he showed what he can do. It is a shame he is stuck in such a horrible band. As for Jack White...style over substance, IMO.
  10. St Augustine is very nice. Plus I am looking for an apt and could use a cool roommate. But only if she likes homemade Italian food. Actually, if I could live anywhere I would move back to San Francisco. I also really like Milwaukee. But then again, I'm a bit of a freak show.
  11. Hey, thanks. I try to stay away for the most part, though.
  12. I'm guessing he named the car "Josephine". "Peppy" is probably just a nickname.
  13. Really? Maybe the difference is in our definition of "hater". Can you point out some behavior a Tebow hater might exhibit?
  14. Her name is Shin Mina Oh....here: http://media.photobucket.com/image/shin+mi...0508-1.jpg?o=13
  15. Maybe it is because I live in St Augustine (where Tebow played HS ball) but I have yet to encounter a Tebow "Hater". I have seen many people who question if he will succeed in the pros labeled as "haters", though. Since when did anything less than total worship equal hate? IMO, he is a very fine college athlete. I think he could be a very good pro, and possibly a very good pro QB if he develops and makes some improvements in his game. Any team that drafts him in the 1st round to be their QB is taking a very big risk. They may be rewarded with a very big upside, or live to regret it. I don't think the Bills are a team that can afford to take that risk. Jacksonville would be crazy to not take him, IMO.
  16. With Clapton it isn't really about chops. If you are only impressed by speed, or showmanship with the axe, Clapton probably isn't your cup-o-tea. But Clapton plays with an authenticity most rock players lack. That isn't to say Clapton can't play with speed, or has no chops. Those just aren't the things that make him special. I'm happy to see few references to Van Halen. He stinks. Among the greats already mentioned I have to go along with Santana, Zappa, Jeff Beck, Hendrix, Page, Isley and Stevie Ray. Roy Buchanan may be the best blues-rock guitarist ever. Certainly the best I ever saw live. Some guitarists that are quite good, and are usually overlooked in this sort of thing, include Richard Thompson, Dave Mason, Buck Dharma (Donald Roeser), Steve Morse, Les Dudek and Robin Trower. Of course, there are many we are still missing. BTW, I saw Tommy Bolin in concert and he was sensationally bad. But then again, he died a short time later, so it may not have been his finest hour.
  17. Glad you think so. It's been quite a while since my last visit. Writing that post made me very nostalgic. Time to go back...soon, I hope.
  18. If you want to go to a very good restaurant away from the crowd of the French Quarter, I recommend Mandina's: http://www.mandinasrestaurant.com/history.html Try the Crab Fingers as an appetizer. I can also vouch for the pork chops, fried chicken and trout. Terrific old bar (no stools)...at least before Katrina. I haven't been there since the re-opening. No tourists here. You will see regular people from all over the city and you might bump into the mayor, professional athletes, musicians, etc. Bring cash as they don't take plastic! If your walking around the quarter and need a quick bite for lunch, you could do much worse than Coop's Place. I've never had a bad meal here. Great prices, real low key/laid back vibe. Try not to act like a tourist here: http://www.coopsplace.net/ Hot new restaurants come and go. K-Paul's goes on and on. Many years ago I was dragged here kicking and screaming, as it was a very hot restaurant and the lines were notoriously long. I got lucky and managed to get in with almost no wait. Now I make it a point to go back on every visit. Several of the best meals I have ever had were in this restaurant: http://www.kpauls.com/site297.php I haven't been to Nawlins since Katrina. I suppose things have changed, but these are the kind of places that tend to remain the same. Just noticed you already went and came back. Oh well, maybe someone else is going and can use the info.
  19. I agree completely. Let's hope he doesn't decide to go out drinking with Pat Kane and his cousin.
  20. The last very good effort. Trick of the Tail was OK, I guess. Then...junk. Phil Collins is an embarrassment.
