1. I dont know if i would say mcgee was "developing" when AW left. That season was mcgee's rook year, and the nickel back was kevin thomas. Hence i see eric king as being in the same role mcgee was in that season. If we do let nate go, i think we'll still need to grab a decent corner, not bargain basement. That being said, i am pumped that McGee is close to re-signing/has beed re-signed.

Now, to get a McGee jersey (ask my bills backers club, i am the resident mcgee apologist) Go T-Mac!

    482109

You are correct re:McGee...dunno what i was thinking. I still stand by by other stuff, though.

May want to wait til the extension's done to get the jersey...if that's what you were waiting for. If not...go get that jersey!

  2. For what it's worth...and w/o getting into the whole back-and-forth here...why not get the best of both worlds:

Go to a DO instead of an chiro or an MD. DOs are real doctors. Then can do anything an MD can do...and usually are more holistic. Plus they learn the manipulations of a Chiro. The bonus is they'll be able to tell if there are any "medical" problems before attempting to cure you with manipulations.

But...there are certainly good and bad DOs...just as with MDs and Chiros. So do some research. If you're in the Buffalo area, PM me and I'll give you a real good recommendation

  3. Didn't we see the same comments where Winfield was on the roster and

    Clements was the #2 CB.....

We cannot have everything the way we want.....Our goal should be is

to build a good OL and DL with the existing set of players and we should

be a better than average team....We can't be paying for every rising

    player....No team does that...

    482089

You're right in many respects. But there's a difference between then and now. When we let AW go, we had Nate with McGee emerging. Despite how good he's become, McGee is not yet where Nate was (as a cover and tackling CB) when AW left. Also, there is nobody at the point where McGee was. King may get there...McGee may get there. But we're starting further behind, in talent and experience, we were when we let Winfield leave. I think we may franchise Nate.

  4. As previously noted, Pete  - "Cookie is a loon."

Lori...you say that like it's a BAD thing. I'm shocked!

    Let Cookie be Cookie!

Imagine how cool it would be when you're walking down the street to have old men shout: "Lookie, lookie...here comes Cookie"

Hmmm...maybe Sestak is the better option.

    Nope! I'm sticking with Cookie!

  5. I have a friend from Florida coming up to visit next week. Obviously, she wants to go to the Falls, but after that, I'm stuck... If you had a first timer to WNY, where are some places you would take them?

I know most will say "there's nothing to do in Buffalo", but any tips would be much appreiated.

(By the way, we are going right from the airport to Anchor Bar for some real wings, so I already have that covered  )

As a former tour guide in Niagara Falls, I'll suggest this...go on the Maid of the Mist. Trust me on this...it is easily one of the best values for the $ anywhere and is very enjoyable. You can board on either the US or the Canadian side.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is nice if she is a refined lady.

Niagara Falls Ontario has a ton of stuff to do depending on her (and your) interests. Floral Clock...Butterfly Gardens (or something like that)...make a day of it!

  6. I just clicked on it and it came up!!!

He earned his first set of NFL stripes on special teams, as Buffalo Bills return ace Terrence McGee posted an average of 26.3 yards on kickoff returns in 2004 and had three runbacks for touchdowns, a performance that won the youngster his first Pro Bowl berth. Now McGee is poised to earn a contract extension, not so much as a result of his kickoff-return prowess, but because the third-year veteran has emerged over the past 1½ seasons as a viable starting cornerback and a player the Bills want to lock up for the long-term.

There have been sporadic discussions about a contract extension for McGee since about the middle of last season, after he assumed the starting role when Troy Vincent was first injured and then subsequently moved to free safety upon his return. But ESPN.com has learned that negotiations were ramped up this week when Buffalo proposed a four-year extension that would run through the 2009 season, and include a $4.5 million signing bonus and a total of $16.75 million in so-called "new money."

At an average of $4.19 million over the extension seasons, those numbers were sufficient enough to grab the rapt attention of McGee and agent Terry Bolar, who had previously rebuffed offers aimed at a contract add-on. Bolar is expected to make a counterproposal to the Bills early next week and could even travel to Buffalo for face-to-face negotiations. It's fair to suggest McGee and his representative are encouraged by the offer and that the climate for consummating an extension is significantly improved.

    I like this:

"It's fair to suggest McGee and his representative are encouraged by the offer and that the climate for consummating an extension is significantly improved."

    Great stuff...thanks.

  7. Her name was Smokey, I got her at six weeks so she's been a large part of my life (I'm 28). I can still remember the day I got her like it was yesterday. Though she hadn't been her self of late, not eating, constantly sleeping and finally this morning she couldn't even sit up or walk anymore.  She was only friendly to me and my folks anyone else that came to the house would get hissed at and clawed at. She even let out one last hiss at the vet before taking her last breath.

Wow...19 years old. Sorry for your loss. Having a pet for that long is really something special. I feel for you, Jokey.

  8. I dont put much stock in these kinds of rankings/ratings as the raters are usually bozos and their idea of what's important has little or nothing to do with what I care about.

With that said, how can they possibly rank the Ralph below Giant's stadium and the Superdome (or any dome, as far as I'm concerned...but the Superdome is a TERRIBLE place to watch football)?

Even worse are some of the category ratings. Giants stadium is rated better than the Ralph in "location"...????????? Giant's stadium is in an different freakin state, fer Christ's sake...the Ralph is as easy to get to as any suburban stadium I've ever been to...and far easier that Giants Stadium...or Candlestick...getting out is another story.

And what is with the "3" for Game-day experience? What the hell is Game-day experience? To me it's all about tailgating and the game-viewing/ebergy experience. Can you tell me the Ralph is one of the worst in the league for that?

Stop now...must watch blood pressure...

  9. Since this seems to be a catch-all thread for all things Brady, Bandwagon Pats fan-related, All-time great QBs and system and underrated QBs...I thought I'd throw this into the pot:

One of the all-time underrated, system QBs (who was as tough, smart and accurate as any QB I've ever seen) is Dan Fouts. The way Fouts ran the "Air Coryell" offense was a thing of beauty, I tell ya.

That pass-happy offense was very complicated and I think very few QBs could have run it as well as Fouts. It's true that Fouts passing numbers are inflated because he operated in this sytem...but he deserves every last one of them, IMO.

It's almost funny to hear announcers comment on how a QB "threw that before he made his break"...they say it as if it were an unbelievable accomplishment...like the QB was Kreskin. That's how Fouts made virtually EVERY throw. It's my understanding that Fouts threw to a spot on the field and expected the receiver to be there at the correct time. When it was working it was virtually unstoppable.

So, when discussing the greatest ever QBs...just remember to keep Terry B and Dan Fouts in the conversation (I'm not saying they are the best....but, they deserve to be mentioned). And let's not include Brady until he plays a few more years and see how he handles losing...being on inferior teams, playing for different coaches, etc. If he keeps up what he's done the past few years, he'll belong in the conversation.

Just remember...several years ago, when the Rams were flying high, many were calling Kurt Warner the second coming. Anyone want to include him in the "Best of All Time" conversation now?

  10. I have heard words to this effect before. In his book, Tim Green said that Young was clearly better than Montana.  Honestly, I have never thought so. What makes you think that Montana was/will be overrated?

The two games that stuck out to me wrt Montana were the SBs vs. Denver and Cinn. Against Cinn., the 2 minute drill was the obvious reason and how he checked off primary receivers.

Against Denver, in his first drive there was a third and perhaps 17. He threaded the needle with an 18 yard completion to his fullback, and it was between the hands of 3 Bronco defenders. The game was over.

I am the very first to say that any qb is as good as his blocking (see Kurt Warner), but it was watching Montana that taught me that arm strength was down on the list of things that make a qb great.

(OK, Stabler showed me that even beforehand).

    480723

I'm a firm believer that Steve Young was better than Joe. In fact, Steve is the best QB I've ever seen play. Granted, I didn't know a whole lot when I saw Unitas. I'm not the only one to think so, either. In a very surprising article ESPN Magazine came up with a new calculation to rank QBs. The result...best QB ever: Steve Young. Now, I certainly didin't use that for my decision, nor do I think that will (or should) change the mind of anyone who thinks differently.

Steve just brought more things to the game than Joe. Steve used his offensive weapons and he was a weapon himself. He ran when he had to (extremely well, at that)...rarely made a bad decision when to run or not. He also threw on the run as well as anyone has, IMO.

Joe had more talent than Steve on his teams. Roger Craig alone was a huge differrence. Finally, when he needed to sit on the bench Steve did it with class and respect...and come off the bench and delivered. When Joe was relegated to the bench he whined like a little Flutie...er...baby.

As great as Young's career was think of what could have been. Steve started his career in the USFL...went to die in Tampa Bay with one of the worst teams ever (I thought he was doomed to be another Archie Manning) and sat behind Joe during a good chunk of his prime. (I'm not saying he shouldn't have been behind Joe then. Montana was taking the tean to Super Bowls...he HAD to sit for awhile.)

I also believe Terry Bradshaw belongs in the great QB conversations and is NEVER included. I'm not saying Terry IS the best...but he fits most (if not all) of the criteria used when discussing Mr. Montana.

  11. Want one or are you bitching? I'm thick. I already used my brain cell allotment for the day getting out of the parking lot.

I'd mention the cowbell, thing - but all I'd hear is another 6 pages of why Picard is better than Kirk.

Young un's. What can you do?

    480704

Lemme make this perfectly clear: I Freakin Want One! (I thought "Hint...hint" made that clear)

BTW, I'm no young 'un. Pushing 50...pushing hard, too.

Speaking of Kirk and Picard...Data's the class of the Star Trek bunch!

Thanks in advance to anyone that can combine Bob Dobbs and Kool Aid into a cool avatar w/in the size limit.

  12. So because you simply cant argue about anything else, you make false assumptions about the majority of Pats fans.  Who are you to judge how long someone else has been a fan of a team for?        Just because your team has a long history of sucking minus an 8 year span or so, doenst mean that you guys are the only "lovable losers" of the NFL.    We've gone from extreme rags and now we're enjoying riches.

Or did you become a Bills fan around 1990?

    480634

I can tell ya, when I lived in the Boston area in the late 80s you had to search high and low to find a real Pats fan. The Red Sox...win or lose...the fans are at the game and wear their emotions on their sleeve. Red Sox talk is all year. The Bruins? Real fans (real stupid fans...but real fans, nonetheless).

The Pats...the New England (not Boston, mind you) Patriots were the bastard red-headed stepchild of teams back then.

I'm not saying there were NO real Pats fans...just that you'd never confuse the Pats fan base with that of Buffalo/Cleveland/Green Bay/Kansas City...get the picture?

I'll reserve my opinion of the Celtics fans for the other board where racisim and the NBA is being discussed.

  13. Combat is great stuff (they make them for roaches and ants). Really first class, five star stuff.

Whenever I've had ants, it makes me bonkers...I go into full battle mode. Clean everything real good. Blast all the areas with a good potent ant spray...all the cracks...doorways...window sills, etc. (Put the pets somewhere else if you go into full ant-kill battle mode.) After all that spread some Combat ant traps around (under counters...in corners, etc.).

    That'll do it.

Aside: when I first went into the North Star's (SF) old kitchen, I turned on the stoves and tons of roaches scattered all around the kitchen. YIKES! I was supposed to be making wings there in a couple of weeks. The owner had an exterminator come every couple of weeks...but there were still a ton of these bastards around.

So I placed about 10 Combat roach discs around the kitchen. W/in a few days...roaches all gone. When the exterminator came the next time he saw the Combat and asked the owner why they were there...needless to say he wasn't happy about losing his gig.

  14. I thought he had sole power to decide the final roster?  Is TD meddling where he shouldn't be?  Damn, I hope he doesn't think he's Al Davis.  Look what that mentality has done for the Faiders.    :D

    480540

I can't tell if this is sarcastic or not. It has to be...right?

TD is the GM...a quaified NFL GM. It's his job top be involved in those decisions.

But, since your post was sarcastic...never mind.

  15. Racist? I dunno. Clearly there's a backlash against the Hip-Hop Culture in the NBA. Baggy clothes, bling-bling and the like. While it's not just Black players wearing this stuff, it certainly has a base among the Hip-Hop crowd which is largely young and urban...often Black. I sure see plenty of White and Asian kids with that look here in SF.

But, let's not pur our heads in the sand here...there are some racial overtones. The guys in charge of the league (and the networks...and the owners of the team) are predominately old White guys (like me). And these old White guys don't like that look. Many old White fans don't like that look. My guess is the NBA looses some $$$ because of that look (old White ad execs shy away)...they lose old White audiences, etc.

It probably is a little racist. My question is why do this? I don't like the look...but so what?

  16. James wasn't on the Bills in those years was he?  I think Butch Byrd, Charlie Warner, Hagood Clarke and George Saimes were the dbacks, Jacobs Tracey and Stratton at linebackers and Sestak Day Dunaway and McDole.

What about Billy Shaw as a possible inclusion for those who appreciate o linemen?

Pete Gogolak contributed too, but who wants a field goal kicker jersey?

    480425

Didn't know it was restricted to that era. He only said "old-time Bills". I think Robert James qualifies as an "old time Bill".

  17. I can see you getting engaged. Down on one knee in front of your fiance...

"Dear, will you spend the rest of your life with me? I know that more than 50% of all marriages end in divorce. I know that more than 75% of all married men cheat on their wives. I know that we'll likely end up in a painful custody battle and I'll lose my job, my dog will run away, I'll go bankrupt and resort to getting freebies at the local gloryhole to steady my nerves...

"But hey, I'll show up on our wedding day if you want."

    Inkman stink, man.

    480384

That's beautiful. dude. You're one of the few reasons to stick around this joint.

  18. It seems you're comparing physically gifted QBs with guys that are less gifted and thinking that the players who aren't big-armed gunslingers aren't as good (perhaps I've misinterpreted what you're saying though).  Personally, I believe it to be just the opposite.  I think you could put a smart QB that is accurate and makes quick reads on any team and he'd succeed.

Conversly, I think if you took a guy like Brett Favre and stuck him on a offense where he had to operate within the system he'd struggle mightily.  Three step drop, make the read, and fire the ball?  That just isn’t what Favre is good at.  That being said, both players (Favre and Brady) have "it".  That indefinable quality that allows them to make plays when their teams need it most.  Elway had "it".  Montana had "it".  All the greats had "it".

So, Brady can't throw the deep ball as well as some other QBs, so?  Jeff George threw a great deep ball, how great was he?  Brady is smart, accurate, makes quick reads, senses the rush, moves in the pocket to buy more time and is a proven winner who constantly seems to make plays to win games.  What more can you ask for? That's pretty much the perfect QB.  So he's not a gunslinger, okay.  Physical ability isn't the most important thing in a QB.  As long as the QB can make all the throws (and Brady can) it’s these other things that make a QB great.

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen the Pats in a 3rd and long and Brady gets pressured, but he sidesteps the pass rush and finds a WR just past the sticks.  It’s uncanny really.  I can't even fathom people looking at this guy play and thinking "over-rated".  I think the guy is under-rated actually.  What other QB can accomplish so much and still have people question how good he is?

Speaking of under-rated, one of the few QBs I've seen in recent years that could consistently make plays when his team needed it is Steve McNair (before his injury) and nobody ever mentions the guy.  I'll admit, he took awhile to groom but at his peak the guy was one of the best QBs I've seen in the last 10 years.  It's just a shame his peak only lasted a few seasons.

And I’m sorry for my Fake Fat Skinny type post.  :D

    479985

Are you now a Fake Fake-Fat-Sunny?

Yes, you misinterpreted my post a little. I understand the whole "it" thing and tried to only include QBs who had a bit of "it". I concur that Brady has "it" to a degree. Given the "it" there are different types of QBs, IMO.

Those who succeeded because of their mad skills and those who succeeded because they managed to fit with the right system. (There are wildly talented QBs who didn't succeed...I didn't mention them...unless you count Archie...but, that's a-whole-nother story.)

I concur that Steve McNair is/was way underated. The guy could just flat-out play...and he was as tough as they come (Jim Kelly/Byron Leftwich tough).

Finally, I can't fathom how anyone can call Brady UNDERRATED when he's already been annointed the new Montana by every media type. I have heard nothing except for sloppy praise for the guy. The only place I've ever seen his ability questioned is on The Stadium Wall.

So is he underrated by some on TSW? Clearly.

Is he underrated by the sports media? Hardly

Is he overrated by some? When they call him one of the best EVER..IMO, maybe.

  19. Brady is Bart Starr. Brady is Bob Griese. He's very good...actually, excellent at executing the O on this team. Some day he may legitimately be compared to Joe Montana.

Brady is NOT Steve Young, NOT John Elway, NOT Dan Marino, NOT Archie or Peyton Manning...etc. He just isn't among the most talented QBs to ever play the game. But talent is only part of the equation (just as QB is only part of the equation when it comes to winning).

If you put Brady on the Falcons and Vick on NE and left everything else (coaches, offensive schemes, defense, etc), both teams would be worse off, I believe.

If you put Brady on the Colts and Peyton on NE, the Patriots would be better and the Colts would be worse.

If you put Brady on the Bills and any of our QBs on the Pats, the Bills would be much better and the Pats would be worse.

It's not dissing the guy to admit he's quite good and excells at what he's asked to do...but also admit he's not asked to do what he's not particularly good at.

I have another slightly related question. Why is Terry Bradwhaw never discussed when the "greatest QB" conversation is in session? I'm not saying I think he is the best, but he has all the qualifications of Brady and Joe...no?
