The corners who can excel in the cover 2 aren't always the flashy types like Atlanta's D Hall or even Clements, so that may be why they're sometimes devalued. But, like you said, it's not correct to say that corners aren't important in the cover 2. They have to have good recognition skills, be athletic to cover a lot of ground, and they have to be physical. Guys like Penn State's Alan Zemaitis, now a rookie for Tampa Bay, are ideal for that scheme: athletic (the guy has a great vertical leap), good football skills, and tough enough to handle run support.

I was there on a recruiting trip my senior year of high school (86-87). I heard all about the crash in '71; heartbreaking story. I never would've thought that they'd go on to win a national title in 1AA and then move up to 1A and be a competitive team in the MAC. Good for the Herd.

This article from the Boston Globe (requires free registration) raises the question of whether minority coaches have a fair shot @ head coaching opportunities in the NCAA. I think there's still a ways to go, but they are making progress. The fact that Mississippi State head coach Sylvester Croom was strongly considered for the job @ Alabama not so long ago is a good sign. Even though he played under legendary Tide coach Bear Bryant, I'm sure many (even Bryant himself, if he were still w/ us) have "issues" w/ a black man running the football program there. Obviously, this won't change overnight, but I think steps are being taken in the right direction. Maybe one day I'll get a shot @ being a head college coach. Of course, by then, I'll be too old, broken down, and senile to actually do the job.

Freestyle artists? Eminem and Big L (rest in peace) are good choices, but I still think Rakim and KRS-One are two of the greatest freestyle rappers I've ever heard. Another guy who was really good is Mad Skillz, a rapper from Baltimore who got a record deal because of how good a freestyle rapper he was.
