I am hopeful this thread avoids discussions of specific coaching or players.

Here are some facts that are not in dispute:

    1. The Bills have had more regular season success than virtually any other NFL team in the last 5 years.
    2. The Bills have not translated the regular season succes into deep playoff runs

Here is a commonly held opinions:

    1. Playoff football is different than regular season football.  (I am personally on the fence on whether or not this is true)

For purposes of this thread discussion I would like to stipulate that Playoff Football IS different than regular season football.  Here is the question:

Are their any significant football strategic changes that could be made, that would result in playing better "Playoff Football"? If so what are those changes?

Alternatively, its fine to respond "flawed premise, the gap between playoff success and regular season success is because the Bills are less talented, or unluckier than the teams that win the Super Bowl"

    someone posted it earlier...

The Bills have beaten an aging Rivers and a bunch of nobody's in the playoffs and have lost to  Mahomes, Burrow and Watson.    That definitely appears to be missing strategy.  Teams in the playoffs (post the Wild Card) are evenly matched and the game swings based on a few plays here and there.  The ones with the stronger mental strength are the ones that forge ahead.

I will never understand the fire McDermott people.

It's ok..as you have to try something different when what you have is not working (and you expect a different result).  What is not ok is not having a plan to replace McDermott.

Hard disagree on ‘josh has not been as clutch as mahomes’…he’s been every bit as clutch.  The defense just cannot make gamechanging plays and josh has to play a 100% perfect game to win.

mahomes was very far from perfect tonight and got the w regardless because they have a game wrecker on defense that always shows up. I don’t think mahomes has played well for anywhere close to 60 minutes in a Super Bowl and their defense/special teams always have a big impact. Josh has not had that luxury in any playoff game…

heck we would’ve lost to Indy in the first round that year we made the afc championship if Josh didn’t go full Superman.  The defense did everything they could to lose that one 😂

When the game was on the line in OT, Mahomes drove his team down the field for the SB winning TD.  That is clutch.

I love Josh as our QB but he had the chance to win that game against the chiefs by keeping the ball till the end; instead he went for Hero ball and misfired.  That is the difference between the two...it is marginal..but that is what wins the SB

If the chiefs are so much more talented across the board with players and coaching, then why do we beat them or only lose to them by 1 score every single time?  Seems to me that if they were so much better than they would blow us out each time.  If reid is so much better than McD and their talent is so much better as well, then please explain this to me?

Reality is, the teams are damn close talent and coaching wise.  We have had very good opportunities to beat them twice in the playoffs.  Sometimes, it just comes down to luck when you are so similar.  We've had luck in the regular season, they've had luck in the playoffs.

If we don't misfire on that lsat drive and forcing to kick a 44 yard FG (with a shaky kicker) then we are moving to the AFCC....But we failed. that is the difference between the two teams.

Bills have been annihilated by key injuries the last two seasons.  If they find a way to stay reasonably healthy they are a serious threat.  The Bills did not lose a single game by more then one score last season.

That is not tied with the injuries.  They can go over the huddle only with better coaches/schemes/execution.

The Bills could have gone to the AFCC if they had executed better in the last drive.   The Bills could have gone to the AFCC if their defense did not give up TDs on 3 straight possessions after half-time.

There is a reason why the Chiefs went on the road and won in Buffalo and Baltimore.  They were coached better and executed better.   Plus they are NOT afraid to play their young players....and finally they are about 60M under the cap....

The Bills need to cut bait with high prized players as the margin of improvement with them is very small.

  5. > Patrick Mahomes- Is the best QB in the league. Comes through 95% of the time with the game on the line and very rarely fails come playoff time. Josh Allen is a very close 2nd but doesn't have the supporting cast that he does.

Josh has not been clutch when we needed (at the level of Mahomes).  He could have won the game against the Chiefs...But just like Purdy did not get the TD to win the game.

    > Chris Jones- Maybe not huge on the stat line tonight but affected the pass and run game all night for the Chiefs. Makes the QB get off their mark. Cost the Bills at go ahead TD in the divisional game, harrassed Jackson and Purdy in both of the other games.

We don't have a game changer like Chris Jones,  He made so many plays to keep their defense in the game while the offense was struggling in the first half.  We should have paid him instead of Miller.

McDuffee, Butker, Sneed are draft picks that have panned out...The bills drafts have not been that good...we have got good players but not the ones that are best at their position.

Reid and Spagnola -  FOr them to go on the road and knock the #2 and #1 seeds in the AFCD and  AFCC tells everything about this coaching staff.  They are not afraid at anything including bringing in a yought movement.   MCDermott needs to learn to trust his young players and let them play and make mistakes.  When you depend on the guy sitting in the couch in the playoffs you are doomed.  This is the downfall of McDermott.

    > To me for the Bills, to get to the Chiefs level, they need to acquire more high end talent

The Bills need to draft well and then play them...   This is on Beane and McDermott.  I see 2024 as the last year for both of them if they don't win the big dance., For that they have a lot of hard park to put.

He needs to go, hasn’t learned in 7 years here

Who do you replace him with?    I am not saying McDermott can win, but who will come to take this job especially with the salary cap.

Look at the Chiefs...They have no superstars (except Jones) on their Defense and they have kept the much vaunted 49ers offense off the end zone.

  7. The Bills lost a game that they had every chance of winning in the final quarter.  There last three drives resulted in zero points.   The blame for this lies on everyone including Allen.   Josh to win the big thing needs to play the smart game.  In that final drive they needed to get closer to a makeable FG first before going for the TD.

The defense has been pretty bad through Josh's tenure and that needs to change.  We are making big bucks to guys that are not making ENOUGH plays.  Hyde, Poyer, Miller, Jones, White are top 5 players in a defense that have not delivered (either through injury or poor play).

The Bills need to get that defense younger and let them play.

Let the draft come to you.  Always pick the best player available.  You don't need to keep reaching in the draft for need.

Josh Allen is the ONLY player in the NFL who can take over a game.

He's the ONLY one who seemingly risks life and limb in games.

He's a grinder more than anyone.

    He's due.  He's the MVP!!!

The other QB in the Super Bowl would agree to disagree.  Mahomes and Josh are the two best QBs in the NFL

    I think its tiers…

Josh Lamar Mahomes and Burrow are their own tier imo.

Then it’s Herbert (he’s close to those guys and will get there with Harbaugh)

Then its guys like Hurts, Stafford, Dak…Goff had a great year.

Then young guys who are on their way, Lawrence, Stroud, Love

Then its mid Tua, Purdy, Baker Mayfield…

And old guys who were elite Rodgers, Wilson.

And old guys who were meh Carr, Cousins etc.

    All my opinions.

Tua and Purdy had great seasons and should be at the minimum in Tier-2 if not Tier-1.   I think Mahomes is in his own world until otherwise proven.

I agree with this but luckily the last two years have infused so much needed studs. Cool, Bernard, Benford, Shakir all made jumps this year and should

make that next big one next year. Kincaid and Torrence we good this year and will be great next. Williams should also be much improved to help depth. They’ve gotten better and more athletic with those classes.

Agreed. We need one more draft to build some starters and backup depth.  Right now our only blue chip players are Allen and Milano and Oliver border line (though he disappeared in the playoff game).

The problem with these stats is that they're all averages. Yes, it all adds up to great records YoY, and good teams/etc. But in the big moments, against the best teams, this team fails year after year. A lot of that blame I put squarely on the coach.

I agree.  they made many blunders on that last drive.  They lost their focus and did not play smart.

Good to get some fresh people in here. Eric Washington didn’t exactly impress. 5 years for Oliver to turn into an impact player. Hasn’t developed anyone else. The resources we spend on the DL far outweigh the production.

I have the same feeling.  Washington got a pass a lot of times for poor performance.  He seemed to be right hand man for McDermott

In fairness to Dorsey, if you listen to all of McDermott's comments about Josh Allen through the entirety of last offseason, it's clear that Dorsey was doing what McDermott wanted... to have Josh run less. That's on McDermott.

Joe Brady has done 2 things that Dorsey couldn't that have had a huge difference:

    1) He has convinced McDermott that Josh needs to run more.

    2) He has gotten Josh back to the level of discipline that he had under Brian Daboll where he's not trying to throw a grand slam home run on every play. Daboll was pretty good at this whereas Dorsey failed to reign in Josh.

Repeating myself yet again but in 2020 Josh completed 69.2% of his passes and threw only 10 INTs. His INT % was 1.7%, the lowest of his career. This year Josh is at 3.1%, the highest since he was a rookie however he's been playing with more discipline lately in the passing game.

Josh will have to be nearly flawless for us to reach the summit.

BTW @JimBob2232, congratulations on getting the Indy job!

    https://www.colts.com/team/coaches-roster/jim-bob-cooter

I think there was an article that showed the INT split between when he was coached by Ken and when Brady was calling the plays.  The numbers were much lesser in the 2nd half.  Go Bills !!!

It’s crazy, I was concerned about how much time he might miss next season as he was being carted off.

To win a Super Bowl you need luck along the way, if Bernard comes back on a short week after being carted off.. that’s the type of luck along the way that’s needed to win a ring.

It is the magic from the Pit.  Go Bills !!!!
