Damn Yankees were an American rock supergroup formed in New York City, in 1989. Consisting of singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw of Styx, singer/bassist Jack Blades of Night Ranger, guitarist Ted Nugent of the Amboy Dukes, and drummer Michael Cartellone.

  2. That was a great performance from start to finish.  I thought the Sabres outplayed the Canes by a healthy margin but failed to capitalize on too many chances.  UPL played another great game.  Glad to hear the fans getting into it and deservedly so.

I will do my best to enjoy the rest of the run.  Hope they can at least make it interesting.

It's the control of ideas and controlled socialization with others.  There's no longer room for the risky idea.  Or the perhaps stupid idea.  There's no longer many venues to share ideas in person.

Next to no government or corporate overlords in the 1960s....then the 1970s it slowly ratchets.  You get a little more control in the 1980s, little more in the 1990s.  A slow ratchet that really took off after 9/11 and overheated with Covid.

As you reflect on the present, the "idea" is heavily controlled by the government and corporations where every idea in products, news, entertainment, politics is deliberately there for your consumption.  The idea *must* generate a profit or influence you in one way or another.  They also prefer you not socializing - just sit in your house and get all of your entertainment and products sent to you.

    Whatever happened to:

    One hit wonders?

    Stupid music videos?

    Indie movies?

Stupid cars like the Pontiac Aztek?

Why hasn't Tastykake produced any new snack in 30 years?

Where to socialize?  Dance clubs, bowling alleys, roller skating, the mall - all dead.

Local news is largely dead - it's mostly AP (heavily controlled) wire crap.

There is no way ol' Tay Tay is as big of a star as she is today in any previous decade.  She's the star she is today because corporate America has eliminated nearly all of the competition.  She makes them a ton of money and in return, there's no indie star out there that has any potential to eclipse her.  Corporate America needs a new Britney so they are force feeding Tate McRae out on the airwaves.

The Cyber Truck IMO is a stupid idea, but it only exists because Elon Musk is throwing his F-You money at it.   It is very unlikely the K-Car, Ford Taurus or the Dodge Minivan would be made today because both cars were "crazy" ideas in US car making circles at the time.

There is this thing called the internet which hosts countless venues that facilitate discussion on all manner of intelligent, risky, stupid, and downright reprehensible ideas and content.  People world wide are connected in a way that would be unfathomable to 1970s man.  No matter how wild your views may be there are online communities of likeminded individuals.

The internet and cheap technology has also given everybody with an ounce of talent and ambition a platform to self-record and share their music, comedy, or  with the world.  There are a number of popular musicians and comedians who got their start by self recording and releasing their material on YouTube and TikTok.  That would have been utterly impossible in the golden age of Studio rock.

I feel like pretty much everyone (other than Nick Wright) has come around on JA17 being a generational QB.

PFF hated him. Now they love him.

Aaron Schatz pre-2018-draft wrote scathing articles about him. He was the only person to give a 1st place vote for MVP for Allen.

I'm just frustrated for Allen more than I even am for myself--and I'm pretty freaking frustrated!!!

Josh Allen is not a better QB than Patrick Mahomes. But if the Bills drafted Patrick Mahomes in 2017 and the Chiefs drafted Josh Allen in 2018, I firmly believe the Chiefs would have won as many Super Bowls or more... I honestly think more. And I think the Bills would have been worse.

I realize that makes me a homer... but I hope you understand that I simultaneously believe that Patrick Mahomes is better than Josh and is inarguably the best QB in the NFL.

I just hope and pray as a frustrated WNYer and as one empathetic to the ultimate underdog in JA17 that in a decade that conversation is arguable.

They are 4-16-4 following a win (1-9-1 at home, 3-7-3 away) and 20-10 following a loss (11-6 at home, 9-4 away).

This consistent inconsistency, to me, is further evidence of a coaching staff and a veteran leadership core (namely: Okposo and Girgensons) that need to be replaced this offseason.

However…I’m not nearly as depressed as most Sabres fans are regarding the future. Levi, UPL, Dahlin, Power, Thompson, Cozens, Mitts, Quinn, Peterka, Tuch, and Benson are still a promising young core. Samuelsson, Jokiharju, Ryan Johnson, Krebs, and Greenway are still intriguing complementary pieces. Savoie, Kulich, Ostlund, Rosen, Wahlberg, Poltapov, Strbak, and Novikov are still quality prospects. I just named…24 people!

So yeah…I refuse to wallow in misery. 13 straight seasons without playoffs is horrible, but it can end at 13 with the right head coach and a few gritty vets who know how much hard work it takes to succeed in the NHL.

In all the Benson excitement, Ryan Johnson's play has not gotten a lot of talk.  Hes been great since game 1.  I am very impressed with his game.

Anyone know the sabres record after a win this season? I swear it has to be like 2-22.

Have they won more than 2 in a row all season?

    What a pathetic bunch.

They have not won 3 in a row all season.  Its actually quite a feat.

They are 4-17 after a win.  They have had only 4 opportunities to win 3 in a row.

Who said anything about them being inherently violent? There is clearly a cultural problem, though, and it's obvious to anyone who doesn't have their head buried deep in the sand.

When you brought in wealth and argued the same trends are visible in the UK and Canada it ceased to be a "cultural" argument limited to American inner cities.  Unless of course, you don't know what culture is, which is highly possible.

why the numerous threads about how great Allen is? We already know this.

We've got certain information, all right? Certain things have come to light. And, you know, has it ever occurred to you that, instead of criticizing us,  given the nature of all this new info, you know, just sayin this could be a lot more complex. I mean, it might not be just such a simple thing here, you get what I'm saying?

I don’t know much about him but a few things I read is that he’s more of a Nickle DB. Idk. Maybe I read wrong. Either way, if that’s true I’m a hard pass. We have TJ

My scouting report on him is:

    Strong coverage instincts

Can get too handsy at times

Not enough sand in the pants.

Hips are not fluid enough to dance to fast songs

    Not a natural brunette

VERY pee shy, does not translate to an NFL locker room

How do you explain the fact that in countries where redlining and segregation never took place, like Canada and England, they somehow still have the same issue with the same group committing a significantly disproportionate amount of crime?

How do you explain that black children raised in wealthy homes are more likely to go to prison than white children raised in poverty?

Many of the issues you mentioned, particularly food deserts and white flight, are self-imposed. People do not want to be around rampant criminality and will rightfully choose to avoid it.

The gall to claim I've been somehow propagandizedby bad messengers while you spout off complete revisionist history about events like the Tulsa Race Riots (which started when black people killed whites) and their supposed "Black Wall Street" (it was a block with four or five small stores) is laughable.

Canada and England have issues with Americans committing violent crimes?

You're also living in a dream world if you think black criminals are covered more harshly in the media. The overwhelming majority of interracial violence is committed by black people. Black-on-white murders double white-on-black murders, even though there are 5X as many whites. Which stories get covered ad nauseam and which ones get buried? Let's be real here.

The media loves stories of white people committing crimes allegedly motivated by hate.  No argument here.  I think these stories get more run than they should and sometimes like George Zimmerman, they jump wildly to bogus conclusions.  Much of the coverage is irresponsible.  I do not think the answer is to do something similarly hasty and irresponsible for people of all races.  I agree that I seldom if ever see the hate crime angle discussed when the races are reversed.

Seems like the media in this case may not be jumping to wild conclusions to drive narrative which is responsible I would think.  Maybe even commendable.  Perhaps because the accused are minors and get different protection in media coverage.  I watch enough news to see plenty of coverage of black Americans.   Outside of the hate crime coverage, I don't see black men getting a pass in the media and there are volumes of research which support that point.

It appears things have changed since 1994 as based on the actual study I provided.  I didn't see any statistics in that abstract or any access to the actual article or underlying research.  I am not familiar with The Public Interest, is it still in circulation? But if the findings from The Public Interest circa 1994 carry more weight with you than the United States Sentencing Commission, then cheers.

Certain "stereotypes" about gun violence exist for a reason. Last year, black people made made up roughly 60% of the homicide arrests, despite the fact that about 70% of inner-city murders go unsolved. They are around 12% of the population. If you take away people in that group who are unlikely to kill (women, kids, the elderly), we're talking about roughly 4-5% of the population committing over half the murders. That's an issue that we should be able to discuss without worrying about accusations of racism.

Sentencing disparities are explained away by them beimg more likely to have prior convictions, which is the #1 consideration when time is handed down.

Every one of the studies I have seen explicitly considers and adjusts for prior offenses.  This is a convenient explanation but it doesn't hold water.

    https://www.ussc.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/research-and-publications/research-publications/2017/20171114_Demographics.pdf

You will want to refer to the section about Prior Violence as a consideration and the 20% observed disparity in length of sentence.

I am well aware of the crime statistics in this country.  Are you offering a defense of stereotyping in the coverage of individual events?

I would encourage you to do some research as well. FBI table 43 gives a racial breakdown of crimes each year by race. These stats are from every police agency in the country which are required to submit a UCR (Uniform Crime Report). A rough breakdown is that black men make up just over 6% of the population but commit approximately 55% of violent crimes.

    Did it. Done it.

Do you intend to make a point based on said statistics?

If this guy was white, we would've known his name, background, and his entire social media history within hours of the shooting.

    That's literally exactly the reason.

At least you have the guts to say it.  I would encourage you to do a modicum of research about prevailing stereotypes in the depiction of black people in the news and media, a topic which has decades worth of research for your consideration.  Or you can take a look at sentencing disparities between blacks and whites.  If you're still convinced that the white man can't get a fair shake in America then we can agree to disagree.
