  1. Ya -- and Ray Bentley wrote children's books. Anyone remember "Darby The Dinosaur"? http://www.espnmediazone3.com/us/2009/10/bentley_ray/ So he's either been badly slandered, or dude is a freak.
  2. And he's not just a fixture... he was the only Bills defender who was on the field for EVERY DEFENSIVE PLAY, according to this review: http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2010/9/15/1689509/dolphins-15-bills-10-comprehensive Note the comments on missed tackles at the end of that article... also calls out Kelsay.
  3. In order to cover: 1) The Bills will need to score. 2) The Bills will need to pressure Aaron Rodgers. Take the Pack and make the $.
  4. Right. Also, the Bills had zero possessions in the red zone. The Fish had just 2, which reflects the D's performance (although Miami converted almost half its 3rd downs). I believe Gailey will adjust and get some production from this crew, but I also think the Bills are in the bottom 25% of the league, easily.
  5. Exactly -- if you have a bunch of middle-round picks, you can afford more misses.
  6. Yes! He'll never shake the Cap'n Checkdown tag this way. Is he mentally able to feel the pressure and react without abandoning ship? It doesn't seem like it. Kelso made a good point on the radio call today... it would be good to roll him out to cut the field in half, make it simpler for him so he doesn't have to see the whole field. That would also help the batted balls problem.
  7. Spiller lights em up. Gus Johnson blows a gasket. Bill Simmons soils self.
  8. It was indeed a great article... good background on Nix, and a confidence builder in his track record & overall judgment. http://www.buffalorumblings.com/2010/9/9/1678761/bills-gm-nix-o-line-was-main http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/bills-nfl/article185104.ece Funny picture there too.
  9. OK we're wandering off the gridiron... but Vin is the best baseball play-by-play guy of all time, hands down. http://www.vinscullyismyhomeboy.com/2010/08/1988-dodgers-vs-as-world-series-rbi.html "In a year that has been so improbable, the IMPOSSIBLE has happened!" Can any football announcing moment touch this? Sadly, no. Van Miller's call of the end of The Comeback was pretty sweet, but it's not in this category. I think where announcers start to suck... they look to insert themselves into moments. The great ones do this without effort.
  10. Yikes. I know this is purely a matter of taste, but I think Al Michaels has become very irritating, and Madden should have hung up the mic about 10 yrs earlier than he did. That pairing was lousy.
  11. It's also fun to listen to the team's radio announcers using NFL Audio Pass... it's amazing how bad some of the announcers are. Examples: Myron Cope in Pittsburgh, who has finally retired... the analyst for Cincy (Dave Lapham) is really bad. The guys who do Chicago Bears radio are pretty good. But speaking of the gold standard... Van Miller. Everyone's grandpa, and you still hear him often in NFL Films work. BTW - Someone please pat me on the back -- I am no longer on probation.
  12. There's no great pairing out there IMO. I think Kenny Albert & Moose Johnston are pretty good, but they are ruined by the moron Tony Siragusa. I think Mike Tirico and Jaws are pretty good, but Gruden's "I'm a doofus" speech pattern is really irritating. Gus Johnson is outstanding, but has no help (not that he really needs it). It's a shame that Marv Albert and Boomer Esiason have been relegated to Westwood One on the radio... they're very good. I think Marv Albert is the best announcer of all time - he can do any sport.
  13. Exactly. That's a hate that can't be switched off.
  14. So great! Peter King is a fatuous windbag with no meaningful insight. The "Kissing Suzy Kolber" blog features a hilarious line-by-line mocking of his weekly column that's a fun read.
  15. Thurman got 18 carries in his first game as a pro... probably started, but I can't recall for sure.
  16. Joe Cribbs was a starter throughout his rookie season... and I think Greg Bell began as a starter too.
  17. I think the OL has been serviceable in recent years, when it comes to run-blocking. The D's inability to get key stops -- that put our offense in obvious passing situations, where the line was terrible. If the D can't get critical 3rd down stops, and we end up in more obvious passing situations, we'll be in the same boat. When a defense isn't sure what we're doing with Spiller (see the Clemson highlights of him running those screens and 20+ yard pass plays singled up against linebackers!)... that's when things will get fun.
  18. Special teams, with a very, very specific lane assignment that corresponds to specific hash marks.
  19. http://www.nfl.com/kickoff/story/09000d5d81228bfe/article/bills-hope-gailey-can-provide-muchneeded-change In case the above link doesn't persist: Bucky Brooks Offense will show signs of improvement under new coach Chan Gailey, but Bills will still land in division cellar. Prediction: 4-12, last in AFC East Vic Carucci Chan Gailey could be a coaching upgrade, but he can't overcome the lack of a legitimate starting quarterback and offensive line problems. Prediction: 2-14, last in AFC East Pat Kirwan Could be tough year for Bills, who changed coaches, lost their leading receiver and top pass rusher, and have banged-up backs. Prediction: 4-12, last in AFC East Jason La Canfora QB and LT situations are scary. Roster is overloaded at some positions, woefully thin at others. At least C.J. Spiller will entertain. Prediction: 2-14, last in AFC East Michael Lombardi My lock to have the first pick in the 2011 draft; welcome to Buffalo, Jake Locker. Prediction: 2-14, last in AFC East Steve Wyche QB, offensive line and running back are all issues. They have nice pieces on D, but didn't upgrade as much as the competition. Prediction: 3-13, last in AFC East I feel like Nixon making his list.
