The Doug Whaley positives are taking huge hits.
Rob's House replied to FireChan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I hear this oft repeated but I don't really understand the logic behind it. I mean, I get that we weren't in a great position with QB, but I don't see why we had to take a first round QB when one wasn't available. What good came of that move, and how would we have been worse off taking a 3rd or 4th round flier on a Jones/Glennon/Barkley type? -

Whaley is a risk taker. He's followed a path similar to that which brought Cinci out of the doldrums by taking chances on talented guys that the league passed over due to character (and in Whaley's case, injury) concerns. Some of these moves have worked out some haven't. What I find funny is that Whaley's a genius for every move that works out and blameless for every one that doesn't. When a guy with injury concerns gets injured it's treated as bad luck rather than a foreseeable consequence of a calculated risk. Even more interesting is how fans invent facts to absolve Whaley of blame. According to half of TBD Whaley was dead set against EJ & Rex. There is not one iota of evidence to support either theory, but they're treated by many as incontrovertible truth. It's also interesting how most fans say Nix sucked but love Whaley for the talented roster that was largely assembled by Nix. I don't think Whaley outright sucks, and I'm all for giving him and Rex another year (or possibly even 2, depending) to put it together before ultimately passing judgment, but the fan perception of this guy as Ozzie Newsome 2.0 is a bit much. Right now he's proven next to nothing. -

I think the fact that you're claiming the OL has been stellar in pass protection all year tells us everything we need to know about your level of study and attention. -

Apparently you don't know what a straw man is. And I've addressed the arguments and explained logically why they don't make sense. Then I identified them as the desperate excuses of Whaley fanboys because I can think of no other reason why someone would cling to such a flimsy argument. -

How does competent run blocking equate to good pass blocking? And how many 300 yd passers did we have this year? Try again! -

I haven't. The best I've heard is this garbage about special teams. Dropping your 3rd down RB and locker room leader, on a team that desperately needs both, so you can save that roster spot for a special teamer is patently absurd. Especially considering his combination of blocking and receiving ability when you've got a pourous O-line and inexperienced QBs. I hear no coherent arguments. I hear Whaley fanboy excuses. -

It's interesting to me how the Whaley faithful glaze over the leadership aspect as if it has no more value on Sunday than it does in Madden. On a team like the Patriots his leadership value would be minimal. But on a team like the Bills who have a dearth of leadership, especially on the offensive side of the ball, it could be extremely valuable. -

It was a stupid move. Glad Fred gets to go to the playoffs, but I have yet to hear a coherent argument explaining why he wasn't worth a roster spot. -

That's not what he was going to say and your sarcastic comment is irrelevant to the conversation. -
At this point I don't like the idea of going into the season with a guy you don't expect to make it through the season. If it's him or a PS guy then I guess it's no big deal if he comes cheap, but if you're going to rely on him and make him a significant part of the game plan I think it's a mistake because the team will be worse off when he goes on IR than if he was never there.

Worst call or non-call against Bills this year?
Rob's House replied to truth on hold's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The phantom PI on Robey has to take the cake. It was one of the worst calls I've seen against any team ever. -

It seems the natural reaction of the board is to attack anyone with inside info who has the decency to share it. -
Here I have to disagree with you. 3 of the Bills 4 best OL will be 30+ to start the next season. Put differently, there is only player currently on the OL who isn't a major project or bust who will be under 30 next season. His assessment on that was accurate and I feel I should give credit where it is due. Of course, a broken clock is right twice a day.

Apparently Whaley had virtually no influence over his first 3 years, was dead set against hiring Rex, and was the mastermind behind the aquisitions of Darby and TT. His record doesn't matter because if Bills fans set the Madden ratings the Bills would have a killer score and that's what being a GM is all about.
