I think I did a stupid thing...we've turned today into a game watching party at our house but that means I'm focused upon being a good host rather than planting myself in front of the TV.  Also, while I think most of our friends coming over will root for the Bills it's not a given.

Oh well...maybe it will be good that I'm somewhat distracted.

    Go Bills!

I just couldn't bring myself to do that. I turned down an offer from a female friend (I live in Boston, so we know who she roots for) to watch the game together. No distractions, total focus, all in. Go Bills!

I'll be honest, Bills are 9-3, don't play tomorrow, and I'm not dreading the rest of the season.  I have absolutely no idea what to do with myself right now.  So, I'm going to look at the current FA class, mock drafts, and our salary cap to have some fun.  Feel free to play along or dismiss and move on.

    Two thoughts:

    - If you're bored already, you are not celebrating the Cowboys win long and hard enough. ;)

    - More seriously, this is an exceptionally thoughtful post. Thank you for all the hard and good work.

  3. I'll add my "grumpy old man" point of view. I prefer that players simply walk back to their teammates after a good/great play. My favorite is when someone acts like they've been there before. However, does it "bother me?" No, it wasn't out of line or obscene and I do not demand that others think like me.

Dear Lawson and Philips, kick butt next week and have fun after the play next week.

I generally appreciate Sullivan for coming at stories from other angles.  I can read and decide the merit.  I’m better off because he wrote and I read.

In this case, I’m surprised only that Sullivan expresses surprise at this event. Every NFL head coach is control freak.  Every business has emotional interactions in the “are you with us or against us” context at the most senior levels.  Did it bleed over into the press, in this particular situation?  The press, where everyone’s an independent seeker of great truths and beyond reproach?  Yes, Jerry, it did.   Did a former wrestler and alpha male in a universe of alpha males swell his chest and lean in?   Yes, Jerry, he did.   Yawn .... pass the chips.  Can’t be his first movie ....

And there you have it. My take-away is the snide, whiny way Sullivan presents himself. My Bills fandom aside, this is a guy I would never choose to have a beer with or in this case, listen to.

    That is a good article.

    Two key take-aways:

-last year, 48.8 percent completion rate on passes from 10 to 20 yards.

-this year, 64.7 percent completion rate on passes from 10 to 20 yards

Close to 16% improvement.  And those are the money throwsI

Actually, moving from 48.8% to 64.7% is a 32.5% improvement. I share that not to be a math prick, but to further support your point. It is fun and exciting, watching Josh grow.

  6. The lead of today's TBN article sums him up well. "Honestly, I don’t think I’ll be validated until the end of my career,” White said. “You can’t measure the success of a defensive back three years into his career. You’ve got to wait on down the line. Because it’s a year-to-year thing with defensive backs, so you’ve got to come out with your A game each and every year.”

This guy is everything; enthusiastic, confident yet humble, extremely talented with a serious self-critical focus. I don't usually enjoy the commitment of big contracts, but I am looking forward to Tre getting paid and being a Bills for a very long time.

As Bills fan, we will be always proud of our QB and what he does to win Football games.  However, the national media looks at him as the whole QB and when you do that, he has failed is still growing in several categories.   From that perspective, he is running as an average to below average a promising young QB.   Consistency is key in the NFL, especially for a young QB.

Let’s be honest. We could easily have lost 4 of the games we’ve won.  Josh has done nothing to distinguish himself.  Excellent D and a bit of luck are covering up what will soon become a huge problem.

You might want to pay more attention to the entire NFL. Most games are "coulda, woulda" until the final five minutes. Your "insightful" observation is a Captain Obvious statement for the league. In fact, in those NFL-wide critical final five minutes, Josh Allen has ruled the roost.

  9. I gave McDermott and A. He came into a stinky swamp of failure and has built a culture of responsibility with a team focused on responsibility and improvement. It has been, and is, a joy to watch. Maybe the most exciting part of this, to me, is the promise of youth on this team. A quality case can be made that the table is set for a serious multi-year run of excellence for Buffalo. I'm lovin' it.

This however, is also a to-be-continued scenario. Our offense and quarterback must, must, grow and improve. I like what we have and am satisfied with where we are at. But, if we are here in a month, it will be disappointing. Our young QB and many new parts have not yet adequately come together. I believe they will. But a serious fan will acknowledge that the improvement is needed. I actually love "the process" and believe in it.

Also, I am enjoying the comments in this thread. Some thoughts are more skeptical than mine. But, they are thoughtful and insightful and I respect the input.

  10. One way to view McDermott's rookie treatment may be to look at our 2nd year players. Allen, Edmunds, Phillips, Johnson, Neal (what a great class!) and Wallace are all improving, becoming more important parts of the team and appear to be motivated, serious minds Bills.  This group could (should) become our core leadership group, with time.

My take-away is that Sean McDermott is smarter than me. :) And, I like it.

Allen has the physical talent. He also possesses the brainpower, humility, work ethic and desire to be great. Allen is showing this year he can get better. He has shown it since he came back from the injury last year. It’s exciting times to be a Bills fan and Allen is a big reason why.

Your statement is precisely where I sit with Allen right now. This is indeed, a very exciting time. I added a couple of traits that I think are important, and complete this well. I hope you don't mind.

    Browns situation:

    1) A coach who is over his head

    2) A QB who is being asked to play outside of his comfort zone

    3) "Stars" on the roster who may implode at any time once the loss column starts piling up

I've got ice cream in the freezer and popcorn in the microwave, waiting for (bolded) this!

..but I fail to see why anyone would have a lack of confidence in our D...

My (if I was head coach) decision to go for the TD on 4th and 1 would not be from a lack of confidence in our D. Give the Bengals the ball, with two minutes left in a tie game, and any one of these things can happen:

    - A long kickoff return (yes, unlikely with the wind at our backs)

    - Roughing the passer

    - Pass interference

Add a 20 yard catch by Boyd, (he was hot) and boom, they're in field goal range.

This is the NFL and last minute field goals happen with regularity. However, when we have opponents down by four, then our D is in control. At 4th and 1, our choice would have been to take control of the win, or leave ourselves open to any number of bad luck scenarios - you know, "Billsy" finishes.

Well using the logic in the rest of my post that you eliminated you might have had more to discuss then editing out the stuff you didn't wat to deal with

I made a complete case above that reply

I was responding to (thus quoting) your rhetorical question.

With Gore at running back and our 245 lb. manchild at QB, we have excellent 4th and 1 options. That actually proved itself as we never got to 4th and 1.

Going for it (if necessary) would have been our safest, most foolproof option for victory.
