Well, this news obviously stinks (if the injury is severe) but if there's any silver lining it has been the strong overall play of Lee Smith, Knox, and Sweeney.  They played well without Kroft for the first two weeks and I'm guessing they'll be prepared to play the next fourteen.

Exactly, I've spent the whole week thinking, "But, I don't want Knox and Sweeney to get less time". I hope Kroft is ok, and that he becomes a quality contributor. However, I'm not upset.

  2. Lee Smith is one of our highly respected veterans who are here to teach and lead their younger teammates. Here, he comments (in The Athletic) on Ford's penalty:

“That’s why we drafted Cody Ford in the second round,” Smith said. “That’s why everybody in this locker room loves him. He’s a dog. He’s a bar-fight kind of guy.

These dudes are grown-ass men. They ain’t a bunch of sissy-ass linemen on this team. As a young player, he just needs to understand that there’s a line, but by all means, you defend your quarterback. Nobody messes with our quarterback.”

Summed up well. The whining over Ford's actions is silly.

It looked like a clear penalty but I like Ford stepping up. Maybe a little more disciplined response next time but his heart is in the right place. Now if his play would rise to his heart, that would be even better!

I actually didn't have an issue with the discipline aspect of it. We were in control of the game and the only real threat was the Giants getting frustrated and cheap. The fifteen yard penalty was almost irrelevant. I cheered, feeling Ford read the situation and responded like a true veteran.

    Some football thoughts.

Start on D. Simple game plan. Contain Barkley in the run game. In the pass game give safety help for him and engram. Giants will probably get there’s but not a ton. Putting it at 17 points allowed.

This is will be the theme of the year. Can the bills offense take advantage of the defenses good work.  Game plan will always be more complicated on this side. Gonna see some similar things from Daboll this week as giants have good enough run defense but bad pass rush. We will run a bit more cause the run defense isn’t as good as the Jets.  In the pass game I think we’re gonna get more vertical. Giants safety are not as good as Adams and maye. Also weaker pass rush allows for deeper routes. This has me thinking a bit more foster than Zay in this game (more Zay makes sense last game).

Ultimately i I think the offense will take advantage and score like 24 points.

    Flame away on my thoughts.

No Flames. I see this as our template. My view of 2019 is that our D will consistently perform between good and very good, with occasional excellence. With that foundation, our offense has room to grow and an opportunity to propel us into the playoffs.

McDermott's qualities as a coach are one of the puzzling open questions for the Bills ultimate success.

There have been times when it seems as though he coaches our team to play above their abilities, as in 2017 when we broke the drought and when we contained Fournette in the playoff game.  If we'd had just a few more hosspower on offense, it seems as though we would have done it.

There have been times when it seems like he's playing checkers against chessmasters, and the Bills get totally totally blown out.    Then the question becomes, is that because the Bills have, as you say, "garbage for talent" and no one could devise a game plan where we'd match up?  Or is it because of poor game plan strategy?  Or is it a combination?

I tend to think McDermott is a conservative coach, perhaps an overly conservative coach.  But I also think he's a guy who is dedicated to improvement and to learning from mistakes.  It's one of those things time will tell.

I think you're living in the past. They HAD garbage for talent:

    - 2017 We were projected to tank. We went to the playoffs.

    - 2018 We fielded a team using ~65% of a salary cap, finishing 6-10.

This year, we are fielding a full team, with a project QB beginning to develop. McDermott has overachieved so far and can be held to a higher level of accountability beginning now. Um, in my humble opinion.

I'm interested in the third turnover because apparently Morse said it was on himself and not Allen.  (going by a reply on that tweet but the play looked like Morse was getting pushed before the ball even got to Allen).

And I know Joe B doesn't like Allen which makes me skeptical.

All true professionals are going to (at least in public) take responsibility for errors. I don't know what really happened. But, I am glad to see Morse taking ownership. I imagine Allen (haven't heard his comments on it) is too. Good teammates.

Here's the thing about Bell.........he surprises you with some nifty plays he makes in traffic and some oooh catches he makes for a RB.......that mesmerizes the viewer.......but he's not a real explosive RB so ultimately he's good for about 4 yards per carry.

I noticed this. Every time Bell made a play, I thought it was for a big gain and was surprised when I saw 2nd and 6, or 3rd and 5. I think the other factor about his runs is that he starts so far behind the line of scrimmage and uses such patience, his 7 yard (mesmerizing is a good word here) run is really only a gain of four.

As for the Bills, it helped that we really flew to the ball today. While our tackling could have been better, we definitely swarmed.

  8. Yes, the offensive line had some moments they would like to get back. I still am very optimistic with this group. Let's keep in mind:

    - This was the first game (as has been mentioned) with a totally overhauled group.

    - The Jets D-line (as has been mentioned) is very good.

    - Morse missed the entire preseason. I think this is really big for the entire group. The O-line plays as a team and he is their leader.

I expect them to get much better and quickly. I think we are going to like our O-line this season.

I will file your comment under "out of context quoting dork reply"

    What part of your quote,

"If the Bill's fail, everything I have heard from Beane leads me to believe he will throw everyone under the bus he can to blame for the failure before himself."

Is out of context? That is just a very wrong thing to say.

When talking about last year's early season QB mess, Beane took responsibility acknowledging he did not bring Anderson in immediately.

When talking about Shady's lack of production last year, Beane took responsibility, saying he didn't do a good job bringing in the necessary parts on offense.

Beane criticizes his own performance regularly, owning it. Meanwhile, you slime him him with, "I believe he will throw everyone under the bus".

If if it makes you feel better calling me a dork for calling that out....yeah, I'll accept that.

Wow, that is harsh. That is a flat out character assault. I have seen nothing from Beane to predict that potential behavior. And, I have to be honest. Tossing that statement out blindly, without justification, leaves me with no respect for your opinion.

    This statement from Wawrow,

"As for completion percentage, I think that needs to improve, but I am not as concerned about it as others. To me it is more about decision making and choosing to take the shorter, easier throws as opposed to leading the league in tossing it deep."

captures exactly what I am looking/hoping for from Allen. If his recognition and decision making matures, the rest will take care of itself.
